The amount of detail on this is amazing. Having walked up to the remains of Walnut Tree viaduct recently and filmed up there, your simulation brings it all to life. Very good job.
The excavators were modern JCB machines, in your vidoe....there were a few hydraulic machines around in the late 60s early 1970s mainly Hymac,s and Drott loading shovels, but in the 60s mostly cable operated, chaseside, John Deer, Cat etc, still great to see some machines working in your great video....
I grew up in Fairwater, Cardiff. During the summer holidays in the early eighties me, my two brothers and our big gang of good natured friends occasionally used to go on long walks around the St Fagans area. We used to walk the path that runs parallel to the River Ely and the South Wales Mainline. Sometimes, when we were feeling very adventurous, we would head west of St Fagans, to the point where the Barry Railway crossed the South Mainline. Beeching's cuts had had its effect long before we got there and that meant the big bridge had already been removed and the tracks for the Barry Railway had already been taken up. Several times we clambered up onto what remained of Tyn-y-Caeau Junction and we would walk north along the trackbed from the South Wales Mainline to St Brides Road. We would come to the junction itself and keep to the right (the St Fagans side). When we got to St Brides Road, we would clamber down the embankment and start the walk back home to Fairwater. There was nothing much left of Tyn-y-Caeau junction, just a few big chunks of rusty metal indicating there had been a railway there. Once or twice, instead of turning right, we would walk along the trackbed and go left (towards Creigiau). About 300-400 yards along (at what I believe is St-y-Nyll) we came to the entrance of what appeared to be a big, substantial railway tunnel. We didn't know how long the 'tunnel' was because it was boarded up and none of us wanted to try to get inside. When the route of the Barry Railway was acquired and turned into the A4232 in the mid-Eighties, the 'tunnel' was demolished. While watching your simulation today, I didn't see the 'tunnel', so I checked the old OS maps online for the area and it appears there never had been a tunnel built there at all. What we saw all those years ago must have been one of the stone bridges over the railway, which had been boarded up; it just looked like a tunnel. There you go, you learn something new everyday! Your simulation corrected a misunderstanding that had been lingering in my mind for 40 years! However you might be interested to know that in 1905 the Barry Railway Company opened a platform at St-y-Nyll hoping to serve the St Brides area. It flopped and was closed just six months later! Another point: A short stretch of St Brides Road is sandwiched by Tyn-y-Caeau junction. On Google Maps there is a place labelled Little Dogs. Just west of that there is a private road ("Tregyrnog" on Google Street Maps) going north from St Brides Road to an L-shaped farmhouse built around a rectangular--ish shaped lawn. That is Budgen's Farm (or was then). One day during the summer holidays, my Dad politely asked the owner Mr Budgen if me, my brother and our friends could have permission to camp in the fields on the other side of Nant Dowlais stream for a few days and Mr Budgen said yes. So we camped there two summers in a row, and spent a good few sunny summers days fishing in the stream. That simple act by my Dad was the spur for some wonderful summertime memories so I'd like to thank him for that. My father died two days ago (17th January 2023). He was 85 years old. Rest In Peace Dad.
Thanks for your information and the memories you have of the area. I always research my routes carefully usually using old os maps here maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=13.6&lat=51.48925&lon=-3.28386&layers=168&b=1 but I was interested to learn of the halt at St Nyll. Glad you liked my simulation.
@@TheOpenBoatDAFFODIL Very interesting watching this, following the railway towards the Drope viaduct, you even managed to include the chimney for the pumping station, they used to pump water out of the River Ely at this point. I remember the chimney still standing before it was all demolished.
Excellent map Indeed. I remember trying to do this myself when Trainsim came out some 20 years ago but glad someone else has managed it. The Barry Railway is of especial interest to me having lived around so much of it my whole life. For the Portkerry section, have you thought about adding the deviation that was laid for a few years after the viaduct collapsed. It was only in place for some 2 years & although it's shown on the OS map of around 1900, there are no images of it anywhere. Would be great to see a simulated view of the line
Hi Ben, really good of you to reply so promptly. I have been investigating the scenarios using RW-Tools and found that Scenery from JeffLayf, Gordon Mack MT-Colletts and UKTrainSim 28914 & 26598 are missing from my assets. I will try to find these missing files on the web. Best Regards Barrie
Ok I've had a quick look. I think the JeffLayf assets are the funfair 1 & 2 at UKTrainSim. And28914 and 26598 are a thatched pub and a Garage. Which should also be available to find on the UKTS site (www.uktrainsim.com/) The Gordon Mack Collets are the engines from the Malmsbury Route I think?? Only the Funfair is really required though. Good Luck
Hi Ben, Once again thanks for taking the time to reply. I did a clean install of the Barry Railway, cleared the cache and blueprints prior to the installation. I was able to drive the Barry Explorer scenario with the Class 37. Got all the way to the Walnut Tree viaduct without incident then collided with a train waiting to cross the viaduct in the opposite direction. Really enjoying your routes and scenarios being a local lad. Do you have any projects underway. I think for my first project i will try to model the Old Cwm Colliery Railway in Beddau. Best Regards Barrie
There shouldn't have been a train in your way at the viaduct? I'll have to take another look! 🧐. I'm currently working on the Cowbridge Railway from Pontyclun to Aberthaw. First release will be Pontyclun to Cowbridge and extended later. I'm glad you like the routes and good luck with your projects 👍
HI Ben its me again. I have been busy loading all the assets required to run all your routes and have managed to use TS-Tools to substitute for missing stock. However I have a problem which is beyond my skill set on the above route. When selecting the Barry Explorer scenario I get the following error:- Driver Service 16 Lat 51.26914 Lat -3.36680 unknown error, also Service 16 missing marker-Treforest Passing Loop 1. I have entered these co-ordinates into the route editor within the game and it appears the problem lies with the terrain. I hope you can understand my ramblings and will be able to instruct what needs to be done. As ever best regards Barrie
Hi Ben just read about a new service running from Cross Keys to Newport and came across the South Wales Metro Map. My question is this would Train Simulator be able to handle a network of this complexity? Also is it possible to encompass existing routes into this project? Just thinking allowed, at the moment I wouldn't know where to start but hopefully further down the line I may be able undertake such a project. Barrie
Train Simulator could definitely handle it, but it would be a mammoth undertaking!!! Sadly you wouldn't be able to include existing models of the route, so you would have to start from scratch! Not for the faint hearted......
Hello Ben, Having downloaded this wonderful route, I was wondering if it is alright with you if I make a Trainz version of it, complete with a version that has Barry Scrapyard included.
Hi Ben I have re-installed Barry Railway and the Driver Service 16 error no longer shows. However I cannot get the class 37 BR Green Split Headcode loco to move from Barry Pier, the same problem persists when I have swapped the loco to a class 52 within TS-Tools. Also I cannot edit the scenario within the game all that shows are 3 loco symbols. Is the scenario locked to stop people making changes? Barrie
Very strange, I have the same problem now as well? The scenario isn't locked, but I will try and find the solution over the weekend. In the meantime do some quick drives 🙂
Hello again, try reinstalling it again. Although for some reason the scenario starts with the train stopping at the station? I can't solve it, but at least it's working now!
Hi Ben sorry to pester you, but running the Barry Railway I have missing assets (MT) GWR Coll-LW Comp E154, E153 & Third Class C77. I have all the RSC assets that you mention with the exception of 9FPack 01. Also missing Gordon Mack MT Colletts Coaches. Any advice would be welcome. Barrie
Hi again, I can't investigate further at the moment, but if you get the missing assets box pop up when your loading the route, press F2 and you should be able to carry on, in Quick Drive at least?

Excellent..!! Wish t were all still there, 1950s magic, must say though, the ladies were a little spooky in the ay they walked, maybe ghost's...???
Another great piece of work Ben ! Thanks for the memories.
The music makes it more enjoyable to watch...Excellent work Ben....
Excellent work. Brings back happy memories as a child playing on the abandoned stretch south of Ponty in the sixties 👍
Absolutely love this video. It is now on my list of favourites.

Rekindled so many memories Thanks Ben !

Hi Barrie, can you send me your email? Or do you have WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger?
I've corrected the error, if you delete the route and reinstall it, it should be fine? Or message me and I'll walk you through the fix.

No, but funnily enough my brother is called Tom Salter! 😁
