  • Corner Pocket is one of several charts that arranger Ernie Wilkins "appropriated" from the Count Basie Band for Harry James.
Nonetheless, the band's interpretation of Freddie Green's classic tune is in the pocket.
The James version, "stolen" by Ernie Wilkins, differs slightly in some early brass figures, and some of the voicing. Jack Perciful plays the intro, Corky Corcoran takes a tenor solo, Dave Robbins plays a trombone solo . Then Harry plays a great solo.
How many times Sonny Payne played this tune. But he rocks here!

The most underrated drummer ever. That left foot! He swings like hell. Buddy, Tony DeNicola, Sonny, Les DeMerle, Harry employed some of the best drummers of all time.

Jack Perciful = perfection. Filled just enough, knew the book inside out, masterful solos.

GREAT read on this chart! LOVE Basie’s version with the most dynamic Sonny Payne in the drum chair .. and .. always been a fan of HJ’s too, so ... WOW! Harry had two of the best BB drummers in Buddy and Sonny. GREAT STUFF!

Wonderful performance. It looks like the sax player on the far right had a reed go south. But he was back in the game in no time.

Any serious player of a reed instrument who wants to learn how a professional deals with such a mishap. There is more to music than just listening.
Many of us who watch these, all but forgotten, videos have a background in making music. We want to glean tips and techniques from the masters. Things that are not written down and are only passed down from maestro to student one to one.@@HelloooThere
