  • “He can feel the good fellowship bulging out all around him.”
For many pilgrims, it’s about the arduous nature of the undertaking -a torturous journey, physical pain and discomfort, the forbidding silence of contemplation.
For these Bavarian pilgrims to the Andrechs Monastery, it’s the temptation of the beer that the monks brew and serve in their in-built beer hall.
Who says pilgrimages can’t involve jugs of beer and loud singsongs?
NB - this footage includes small Bavarian children being given beer to drink. Needless to say, the BBC does not approve.
Clip taken from Tonight, originally broadcast on BBC One on Friday, 23 Apr 1965.

I used to work with a guy from Tyrol, he used to have a bottle of Andechs Doppelbock every day for his lunch. In the past 30 years, beer consumtion in Germany has dropped by 25%.

On the continent it is fairly common for a person to have a glass of wine or beer in the morning. Doesnt turn them into raging alcoholics.

Tell that to the Cathars. Tell that to the Muslims. Tell that to the Jews. Tell that to the Huguenots. Christians are famous for slaughtering other people in the name of Jesus.
