      Sho Nuff While, yes, Mexico had quite a loose hold on their far Northern territories, they had just fought an 11 year war with the Spanish for independence, meaning that, yes, even after about 20 years of rebuilding, they weren’t stable enough for a war, meaning the United States could easily take advantage of this. And they did. So really, even though it was relatively cheap for the US to fight this war, it was mainly to help kick down the Mexicans, and if you look forward to the French Invasion of Mexico, the US gave supplies to the Mexicans, meaning that throughout the 18th Century, they used multiple other countries for their own use.

    The Monroe Doctrine is the origin of this plan. Basically, the Monroe Doctrine was that the USA didn't want the European powers operating in North America. The UK was never going to give up Canada. Denmark was never going to give up on their territories. By the time Iceland and the Canada became autonomous, idea of consolidating North America under the control of the USA was no longer of interest to anyone.
    For years their was talk, mostly in Canada of a merger with the US, but the Americans aren't interested and most Canadians reject it as well.

    • @AureliusLaurentius1099
      @AureliusLaurentius1099 5 лет назад +8

      Americans especially Republicans dont like the idea mostly because Canada will most likely vote Democrat,
      this is the same reason why Puerto Rico and D.C aren't states yet, the fear of tilting the balance

    • @macvena
      @macvena 5 лет назад +19

      @@AureliusLaurentius1099 Americans don't really think of this. It's not a thing in the US. Canadians talk about this a lot.
      Granted, the potential electorate shift may be seen as highly unfavourable in the states to those aware of this idea.
      Washington DC was never supposed to be a state. It was deliberately carved out as a federal district for that reason. The framers could simply have left it as it was, but back then, the original, individual states were much more autonomous and independent. Giving one primacy with the national capital would have damned the constitution from the start.
      Puerto Rico has had enumerable opportunities to become a state, but has largely rejected it. You see, Congress doesn't create States. A prospective state must meet a constitutional criterion, apply for statehood, maybe even have a referendum of sorts, and there must not be any major objections that could cause a political crisis, finally Congress must vote to pass the application in both houses by a 2/3rds majority. It's quite complicated in reality and that is why new States simply didn't spring up daily in times past.
      There is no political cabal amongst Republicans. They are just old fashioned, and do not like radical alterations to the US Constitution, culture or rhythm of life. The Democrats are always wanting changes, even when there is no compelling need. Both sides seek an advantage. If the balance were to tip in some sudden way that wasn't an organic outgrowth of the population as a whole and the times, really bad shi* could happen. We are still quite scarred by the American Civil War.
      It's all academic. It's just not a thing. No one really wants it in the lower 48, though some might like it. It's not a tiny blip on our national debate.
      I think there are tremendous advantages, but enumerable complications with it.
      The Americans could tolerate some while others would be deal breakers. I sincerely believe that Canada would lose so much that it may not be seen as equitable or worthwhile.
      The union would likely be more like annexation by the US of Canada, rather than two nations merging to create a new one with visible elements of both.
      Our Constitution is damned near sacrosanct. Mess with that and all bets are off.
      The flag could handle more stars, but that maple leaf is likely out. Our government is a presidential system and largely incompatible with the parliamentary system, ergo, no monarchy, no Prime Minister.
      The union wouldn't need two militaries so Canada's being far smaller would probably be gone. The members would either be discharged or absorbed in the the 4 branches of the US Military. And then there is Quebec. Unwanted by both, grudgingly Canadian, definitely not keen on the state's and wanting to be carried just to remain. No bueno, señor.
      One final thought. Any kind of merger even remotely like what the EU did isn't going to fly either. The Americans will balk at a supranational government that could sneak a political union on its members. I'm pretty confident the US will not give up it's sovereignty without a fight. I mean that in every sense of the word.

    • @javen69

      51% of Albertans do not want to join the US, stop making up half baked retarded false facts. While majority conservative in nature, polls clearly show Albertans to be strongly in favour of universal health care, and many socially forward programs. They wouldn't want to regress by joining US.

    Canada and Iceland will NEVER happen. Greenland is more probable though. When it becomes a solemn nation, the president could invite Greenland to consider being a state. If the Greenlanders are in favor of becoming a state, it's more likely to happen. But if they're not in favor then the US can forget about Greenland becoming a state. Personally I'd be excited to make Greenland the 51st state

      Bub Nub that’s not how it works.. but if you want to focus on just the size than even that isn’t large. The US GDP is ~21 trillion it’s debt is ~22 trillion. A debt to gdp ratio of almost 1:1 is normal for most countries. The US debt looks back because of how large it is but it’s not really bad. Look at Japan for example, it’s debt is over 200 percent its gdp but substantially lower than the US in sheer size but most would say the USs is worse when Japans is worse

      I mean, don't really like the idea of ascribing characteristics to large groups of individuals without really experiencing firsthand but...
      it is my impression that U.S. Americans already tend to be oblivious to *many* things concerning their own compatriots spread across the *vast* territory of the United States, let alone things pertaining to foreign countries.
      It seems to me like just a region-specific terminology like any other country that aligns with their particular history and culture, it became more convenient for them to talk like that
      The problem is that the United States, in many ways, is NOT a country like the others. It's one of one the most loaded and influencial country on Earth so... it's quite irritating since their BS inadvertently spreads beyond borders.
