  • Martin JRM Mars Water Bomber operated by Coulson Flying Tankers is seen on approach and landing on Kootenay Lake near Proctor and Harrop, around 30 minutes outside of Nelson, British Columbia. Hear the awesome sound as these four massive radial engines roar overhead! This aircraft, Hawaii Mars, was here this summer to fight forest fires around British Columbia and stayed at this location for around four days.

Just ran across this video, I'm in tears, my dad was a radio operator on this very airplane during his time in the Navy. Flew trips from Korea to Hawaii and to states. WOW what a piece of history, I'm so glad I found this video to share with my grown kids and their children....Thank You so much!!!

My wife and I had the privilege of exploring this plane on Sproat Lake on Vancouver Island back in about 1998. It was the off season and the plane was being serviced. Several engines were on test stands. We met a nice pilot/mechanic named Brent and he took us aboard, where we poked around on the flight deck (too big to call it a cockpit), clambered over the water tank (6,000 gallons I believe) and opened a hatch on the very top to climb up on the wing. An immense aircraft. I'm sure that if I hadn't had my beautiful wife with me Brent might have told me to get lost, so it was our lucky day. I must dig around and find the photos I took.

I love how the engine nacelles and cylinder areas are painted red; nice personal touch to the aircraft and adds a certain blend of uniformity.🙂 We tend to forget Martin built a whole lot of airplanes. I was watching some docu. footage on Aviation history and interviewed were Glenn Martin(died 1955), William Boeing(died 1956), Allan Lockheed(died 1969), Jerome Hunsaker and others. Great footage of aircraft company founders.

Agreed. When I was a kid, and we travel to Vancouver Island to go camping, we always went up to Sproat Lake to the the (then 3) Martin Mars aircraft. Ulesss we have a change of government in the October federal election, there's no way the Canadian Government would become involved. It's disgusting.
If you're an aviation fan you probably know about the Plane Savers project that took place from Dec 30 2018 - June 6 2019. A derelict, stripped DC-3C sitting in a corner of the St. Hubert airport near Montreal, originally an RAF Dakota in 271 Sqdn that dropped paratroops on the night of June 5th, was bought privately by Mikey McBryan on Dec 28, 2018 off of EBay. He set a goal to have the DC-3 fly by June 6, 2019. With a tremendous amount of volunteer labour, plus donations of various kinds, she was rebuilt to being fully airworthy. C-FDTD had her inaugural flight on June 6, 2019, the 75th anniversary of D-Day. "Buffalo Joe" McBryan was pilot, Quinn Jones (an ex-Buffalo pilot now flying 777's for Air Canada) was co-pilot, and Ronnie McBryan - DC-3 Mechanical Genius, was Flight Engineer.
Mikey made a video log, with posts almost every day, and posted it to RUclips - you can find all 158 episodes linked on Mikey's page here: onruclips.net/user/McMakk
If you looke at Episode 149, from about 16m12s to 18m55s, you get a bit of a feel for the "before" and the "after.
Episode 156 was a special, the D-Day inaugural flight including cockpit video, here: ruclips.net/video/WxgAppEPk7A/видео.html
The actual D-Day flight was also filmed by another RUclipsr, Mark Brandon, and he made a 17 minute video, here:
      ruclips.net/video/gP5TaUgBsog/видео.html
C-FDTD will be at Oshkosh this coming Tuesday. Wish I could be there - I live relatiively close to Buffalo Airways' big maintenance base in Red Deer, Alberta - a long way from both St. Hubert and Oshkosh, darn it. DTD is not going to be part of the Buffalo Airways fleet - she is a private aircraft registered to Mikey.
So maybe Hawaii Mars could be a future Plane Savers preservation project. Joe McBryan would love it, I bet, with his passion for historic aircraft. There would be a _lot_ of people who would show up to help with that one.

I was in a 12 foot boat fishing and this plane , all flat black at the time came around the point at about 200 feet above me . And landed in Pat Bay , Saanich Inlet , there were 3 originally as I recall , one was used for parts . They would practise right out front in the inlet , great entertainment on a summer afternoon.
