THE FLOATING WING ADVANTAGE The Beriev's very new design has something in common with a very old design. Its floating inboard wing root seems to serve the same purpose as the short, stubby, mid-fuselage sponsons on the old Dornier and Boeing monohulls. These sponsons eliminated the need for wing floats, and assisted the transition to the step. My understanding is that the added surface area of the sponsons would cause them to begin planing at a lower speed than the hull, and they would help lift the airplane onto the step, reducing the amount of horsepower required to make that transition. Once on the step, the sponsons would lift out of the water and no longer produce much drag. The greatest demand for horsepower occurs when getting on the step, and these sponsons allowed the otherwise underpowered flying boats to get on the step despite being heavily loaded for a trans-oceanic voyage. The Beriev's floating wing serves the same purpose. The assist that the wing provides allows this 5000-pound monohull to be comfortably powered by 420 horsepower. Once on the step, the low wing makes maximum use of ground effect to reduce the liftoff speed, minimizing the airplane's exposure to water drag. Conventional seaplanes use flaps to achieve this same result. There is a certain elegance of simplicity in the Beriev's use of a one-piece wing to achieve what is usually done with the complexity of a wing flap system. Through shrewdness of design, the Beriev designers have eliminated an entire system that entails moving parts and maintenance, as well as management on the part of the pilot. ROUGH WATER READY One of the pre-conceived notions I arrived with was that the airplane probably isn't any good in rough water or crosswinds. I had a chance to find out that this is not the case. One of the days I flew had gusty winds and crowds of weekend powerboats that were whipping the surface into a confused sea of random chop that made for some genuinely rough water. I flew it in water that well exceeded the 1/2 meter (19 inch) waves that had been demonstrated in certification, and found it to handle them at least as well as a comparably sized floatplane. In some ways it handled them better, since it slides across the water on its broad platform with no pitching or heaving tendencies. Again, I found no porpoising tendencies, even when slamming into the occasional extra large wave. Also, I was able to verify the extent of its roll stability on the water by falling in on the step behind a large powerboat and riding parallel on top of his wake. Doing this would have been hazardous in a floatplane and precarious in a conventional monohull, but with five feet of wing skimming the water on either side to provide stability, it was a non-event in the Beriev. It continued steady, with no rocking of the wings at all. The airplane's construction seems sturdy enough to withstand the abuse of rough water. When it conies to rough water, one of this airplane's strong points is the German-made MT propellers. Their location above and behind the broad wing practically eliminates spray exposure, and any spray they do encounter is not likely to do much damage since the props are composite with a nickel leading edge. Our rough water session left the props unaffected, where the same session in a Grumman would have required dressing the blades afterward. The props on the airplane have 200 hours and 400 water landings on them, and they have never been dressed and do not need to be. I found that very impressive. -Burke Mees Water Flying Mar/Apr 2005 www.seaplanes.aero/main/index.html

Interesting combination of seaplane and ekranoplan but flies like a normal plane. It is not a pure surface effect vessel. I'm amazed that the wings actually rest on the water.
this design eliminates it rocking side to side when taxing on water, and maybe safer when landing in terms of not hitting the strut, but the takeoffs and landings look WILDLY bumpy, so idk...9:06 looked NUTS! yah, I agree with the comments actually, low wing is worse off during landings than a highwing strut hitting
Actually, it is a mid-wing design, which has a distinct advantage of not requiring any side floats, which increase drag, so it has much less drag than most seaplanes. That is why it cruises so much faster than other seaplanes.
I love all our hydravion Internet specialists giving their highly qualified opinions about this small plane. I'm sure they are unable to guess the first rough structural calculation of the plane, and have no idea of the purpose of the displacement low wings on this hydravion. It's the Be-103 designed and made by Beriev, for operations in far North and Siberia. Beriev has been since 1934 a specialist of hydravions, as the 200.000 lbs A-40 flying at 500 mph which holds 140 world records or the well known Be-200 multi-task hydravion.
+Pablo Ricardo de Tarragon As a pilot I would suggest that the low wings help with stability while on the water and help the aircraft into the air with the assistance of the ground effect.
+Dan NZ I do agree, the configuration is very stable. The root of the wings and the apex are designed to channel the water and air, forming an air cushion. And the center of gravity is kept very low, thus very little risk of horse hobbing with the engines well protected above the water.
pablo why didnt you say that in the first place . instead of coming across as a spoilt little boy .....im with dan........heeeheeee........................
Hi Guys, It's cool, we all express ourselves in different ways and in our own style, I must admit that some of my comments elsewhere have been misinterpreted and inference draw where none was meant. There are some very good shots of the Be-103 on the water at the beginning of this video and there is an awesome shot of the underside of the aircraft at 3:15 This is a great and very well thought out design and I would love to fly this aircraft if I ever got the chance.

Interesting sea plane design, never thought having the wings in the water would be a good idea, wonder how it would handle rough sea conditions. Cool looking design.
It's designed for the same water conditions as a float plane.
It seems that the wings being right in the water adds quite a bit of drag. The aircraft also looks a little unstable while in the water.
@@theironduke7653 Also, IMO it adds to the super long takeoff run.
Hope it has a good corrosion control plan... Salt water eats metal fact.
THE FLOATING WING ADVANTAGE
The Beriev's very new design has something in common with a very old design. Its floating inboard wing root
seems to serve the same purpose as the short, stubby, mid-fuselage sponsons on the old Dornier and Boeing

These sponsons eliminated the need for wing floats, and assisted the transition to the step. My understanding is
that the added surface area of the sponsons would cause them to begin planing at a lower speed than the hull, and
they would help lift the airplane onto the step, reducing the amount of horsepower required to make that
transition. Once on the step, the sponsons would lift out of the water and no longer produce much drag.
The greatest demand for horsepower occurs when getting on the step, and these sponsons allowed the otherwise
underpowered flying boats to get on the step despite being heavily loaded for a trans-oceanic voyage.
The Beriev's floating wing serves the same purpose. The assist that the wing provides allows this 5000-pound
monohull to be comfortably powered by 420 horsepower.
Once on the step, the low wing makes maximum use of ground effect to reduce the liftoff speed, minimizing the
airplane's exposure to water drag. Conventional seaplanes use flaps to achieve this same result.
There is a certain elegance of simplicity in the Beriev's use of a one-piece wing to achieve what is usually done
with the complexity of a wing flap system. Through shrewdness of design, the Beriev designers have eliminated
an entire system that entails moving parts and maintenance, as well as management on the part of the pilot.
ROUGH WATER READY
One of the pre-conceived notions I arrived with was that the airplane probably isn't any good in rough water or
crosswinds. I had a chance to find out that this is not the case. One of the days I flew had gusty winds and crowds
of weekend powerboats that were whipping the surface into a confused sea of random chop that made for some
genuinely rough water. I flew it in water that well exceeded the 1/2 meter (19 inch) waves that had been
demonstrated in certification, and found it to handle them at least as well as a comparably sized floatplane.
In some ways it handled them better, since it slides across the water on its broad platform with no pitching or
heaving tendencies. Again, I found no porpoising tendencies, even when slamming into the occasional extra large
wave.
Also, I was able to verify the extent of its roll stability on the water by falling in on the step behind a large
powerboat and riding parallel on top of his wake. Doing this would have been hazardous in a floatplane and
precarious in a conventional monohull, but with five feet of wing skimming the water on either side to provide
stability, it was a non-event in the Beriev. It continued steady, with no rocking of the wings at all. The airplane's
construction seems sturdy enough to withstand the abuse of rough water.
When it conies to rough water, one of this airplane's strong points is the German-made MT propellers. Their
location above and behind the broad wing practically eliminates spray exposure, and any spray they do encounter is
not likely to do much damage since the props are composite with a nickel leading edge.
Our rough water session left the props unaffected, where the same session in a Grumman would have required
dressing the blades afterward. The props on the airplane have 200 hours and 400 water landings on them, and they
have never been dressed and do not need to be. I found that very impressive.

I love the design and look for this aircraft, excellent! 👍🏻🇺🇲🇺🇲

I want to build an RC seaplane like these. Great video!
Cool idea !!
It looks so happy when it's flying.
Oh wow.. hats off to the Russkies, great job on this one. 🤜🏻🤛🏻🇺🇸
"пацаны ваще ребята!"
Actually, it is a mid-wing design, which has a distinct advantage of not requiring any side floats, which increase drag, so it has much less drag than most seaplanes. That is why it cruises so much faster than other seaplanes.
💪🇷🇺🐻Great to see a flying boat from Russia well done ! 🙏👌
We need more aircraft like these in New Zealand
Are you bored with living without any problems?
You'll get them in full if you buy such aircraft type.
There are really a lot of them.
More aircraft like these in America.
Tiny canniball lollypop wiffee Because many comments are stupidly aggressive, show a total lack oh knowledge of minimal engineering, and of history of aviation.
I do smell also the stinking odor of xenophobia so commonly expressed by some in YT about Russia, China and many other countries.
PS I'm in age of being grand father, and I was writing for the ignorants, so I used short simple words, and a direct style with no subtleties. About spoilt little boys, I say to the parents that they have lost an occasion to use a condom.
I am really surprised those wings held up so we'll in the sea! WOW just amazing! That's really cool how it just goes down the ramp into the sea and takes off! HEHE I wonder what the insides look like afterwards! I wish they had taken some pictures or video of the insides too! Really Awesome Aircraft! Well done!
Gorgeous aircraft !!
May god let us live in peace....
Thank you, Konstantin, very good footage
My immediate concern is debris in the water that could cause major damage to the airfoil. This is not the case with pontoons.
Nice and beautiful airplane
That's a gorgeous plane. I scratch build rc planes, and this has been on my list for a long time
Hmmmm...looks like a good way to get sea sick right before you get air sick. I can;t wait to try it!

wt a dream airplane some changes on the fuselage so the wings dont touch the water so much, new bigger , lighter and more powerfull engines. best sea plane ever
For me this plane is a nice-to-have, after my carrier strike group and flip-lid mountain lair. Amazing video.
Maybe it’s just me ,but both planes looked like they struggled a little to make the initial break out of the water .
Larry Green IT took of just fine!
So much drag to over-come, almost doesn't seem possible wonder if an air foil would work to get it out of the water
Throw in a bit of swell, 🤯, or a cross wind and it will crash.
THE BEST. THANK YOU.
That is the cutest sea plane I've ever seen 😍😍😍
I guess the weather is important for water take-off and landings, although I love the look of the plane in the air. It looks like nothing I've seen before. I'm Canadian, so unless the plane is a WWII flying boat, I expect to see pontoons on sea planes. :-0! lol!
Being a Canadian says anything one would ever want to know! HA
I love your donuts and coffee. I had to leave Canada before I became to fat to get in my clothes..

Hmm. Beriev actually made an airplane that isn't ugly. Remarkable.

Better hope every landing is on water as smooth as a swimming pool.
Probably more of a lake skipper than a sea plane.
It was Designed to Land on Lake, Likely for Aerial Patroling
@@MoskusMoskiferus1611 Lakes can get nasty too. BTW, this footage was shot at a port on the Black Sea.
Looks good, so long as you stick to smooth water landing in low wind conditions. Stuffing that plane doesn't look difficult.
It's freakin awesome!
What is that huge turbine driven airplain in the background passing by? Never seen that one. Looks awesome..
BE-200
I started to love this plane
