I gotta say, I LOVE this format. The longer retrospectives are great to watch in chunks, but these shorter and more digestible retrospectives about games you unambiguously love are the perfect thing to e.g. watch over breakfast to feel good at the start of a day. Looking forward to more of these!

1:50 Pffft not for me. Im 34, when Halo 1st came out i couldn’t understand why it was so over blown. Perfect Dark rained supreme as it was Golden Eye 2.0.
Perfect dark had so many weapons and alternative fires that basically doubled the guns. Halo had 2 guns, major down grade. Halo cant decide between being a serious shooter or if cartoony alien death souths is the way to go.
Lets be honest, X-Box bombed between the red ring of death and no games worth playing console. Halo was X-Box 1st successful game on a dead on arrival console. Halo saved that console. Thats it. X box has the same problem till this day. They make a handful of games worth playing but never worth buying an entire console first. Especially since they STILL USE BATTERIES! 😪

Your totally right about Tony Hawk and the culture it delivered to people outside south bay. Im from San Pedro CA like 40min from LA. I miss the days of house punk shows in the living room with pillows and mattress’s blocking doors and windows to sound proof. All while there’s a half pipe in the back yard and skater boys n girls. We even got a skate park made under the freeway by raising money through shows. Tony hawk actually came down and hung out with the local skate punk scene and donated money.
Even GTAV has the skate park under the freeway. Punk & Hip-hop was a tornado of a scene to be apart of back then.
Nobody is present in the moment anymore. Everyones loosing the moment trying to capture it. Our memories are more than audio visual. The feel of a crowd, the vibes of anyone you run into, its all tye black sheeps of the family in one big outcast of a family. 🤙
      Your videos are solid bruv.

I've been watching your videos for 3 hours in the background while working and the moment you namedropped SOULCALIBUR, I gasped for air and paused, stunned with excitement. SolCal 6 was the game that made me completely fall in love with fighting games all over again, and I recommend it on every occasion to anyone I know. I love how just accessible but deceptively complex it is, I love its gameplay variety that stems from different weapons (there's only so much you can do with martial arts). I am so psyched that to have heard you sing praises of this nowadays grossly overlooked series, this has totally made my day.

Hearing you talk about War of the Lions makes me feel vindicated. I played a bootlegged copy of Tactics Advance that I found on eBay when I was 14, so when the War of the Lions came out a couple of years later, I finally had a reason to buy a PSP. The writing has such a flavour of authenticity and quality to it, that when I saw Game of Thrones for the first time, I was immediately reminded of Tactics, due to the brilliant new English localisation on the PSP port.
Yasumi Matsuno, Hitoshi Sakimoto and Akihiko Yoshida all deserve way more recognition for what they do when they combine their powers.

I have always been a big fan of long-form RUclips videos whether they're about things that I love or niche topics that I'm unfamiliar with. But I particularly love video game analysis videos, reviews, retrospectives, and deep dives. I'm subscribed to some really amazing content creators whose content I love: Critical Nobody, Errant Signal, Games As Literature, Joseph Anderson, MandaloreGaming, Matthewmatosis, Noah Caldwell-Gervais, Raycevick, Shammy, Shamus Young, and The Salt Factory to name a few.
I genuinely think your work stands out as some of the finest and most enjoyable content that I subscribe to. Your narration is wonderful, your videos are consistently well edited, your audio is clear, and your passion for the topics you cover is evident in the writing.
This video was no less excellent than any of your previous retrospectives, and I am delighted to hear that you enjoyed the chance to shake things up and make something new. I will always keep an eye out for your videos as they release.

Halo 1, 2, & 3 will forever hold a special place in my heart. Thinking about them transports me back to the early days of Xbox Live. Those days blew my mind. Xbox lan parties, playing online, clans in Halo 2, I mean it was everywhere. Halo 2 is the most nostalgic for me. Halo CE I believe to have the best campaign. Halo 3 is probably my favorite multiplayer experience in the franchise.
And yeah, the Halo 3 "Believe" ad campaign has never been touched IMO. But I also remember the Gears of War Mad World trailer melting my mind back then. Excellent production, Matt.

Seeing video games ascend above movies and TV in terms of mainstream relevance was something I could have never dreamed of as a kid and games like Halo 3 literally delivered on that promise. They felt like huge cinematic moments and I really hate that the industry didn't continue in that direction.

It's a love-letter to classic survival horror like Silent Hill 2 especially - with a lot of fantastic polishing touches that remove a lot of the frustrations in older titles. It's got a truly stellar and fascinating story, that is also very open to interpretation with worldbuilding and art direction that continues to just sit in my mind ages after finishing it. A truly incredible game for having been made by just 2 people!

Your point about overuse of Pyramid Head is spot on. Silent Hill as a franchise is kind of damned by the critical success and lasting relevance of SH2. The fact that Pyramid Head, a monster supposed to represent some deeply troubling psychosexual details of James' mind has become the series de-facto mascot is the prime example of that. Is it cool that you can play Pyramid Head in DBD and stab Ash Williams to death? Yes, very. But it does really cheapen the character.

What I find interesting about the Silent Hill trilogy and what those who made games under the name, that aren't Silent Hill didn't understand was, that in the trilogy the monsters represented aspects of the villain or supposed villain of the story. SH1, Alyssa, who appears to be the antagonist until you realize she's actually trying to stop what's ahppening. SH2, well that one is obvious. SH3 Claudia. Everyone after thought monsters need to represent something about the player character, but we only truly play as one villain. Though there are certain sugestions about the Origins guy so maybe he's a bad guy?

It's funny as someone who left Blighty for Barcelona in 2015 when someone says "Sk8r culture is dead". We still rollerblade down the avenues here, and it's not just a generational or delayed thing. The Anglosphere has this habit where it finds a thing it likes that defines it for a few years, and then it moves on, but that hasn't been my experience living in Europe. The Barcelona MOMA's courtyard was literally designed as a skate rink, and I regularly see people of all ages out there. I don't think it's dead at all, it's just changed its focus. ^^

As a massive RPG Tactics fan, so great to see you look at Final Fantasy Tactics, and hope this means some other games from that genre could get focus, perhaps in a proper retrospective given a lot of them are less looked at. For example, the Devil Survivor games have just... so many different things you could analyze if you find a way to play them, and deal with the large time commitment. Or for that matter, an epic retrospective for Tactics Ogre wouldn't be out of place, as I think that series is under-analyzed, there's a remake coming soon, and to top it all off, Let Us Cling Together's focus on moral quandaries all strike me as fertile ground for a longer video. Heck, you could analyze grind, as a concept, by looking at Disagaea, which could be a really interesting video, looking both at why grind sucks, but also why it can be enjoyable in certain cases.
Otherwise, great format! To give thoughts on the other games, Halo feels like a victim of its own success in a way that's sadly kind of typical now of franchises that are too successful. Silent Hill 2... while it isn't the game's fault, I find it frustrating how we get so many horror games now where the weakest part of them is the actual gameplay. I bring this up because while Silent Hill 2 is a beloved classic, it isn't for its gameplay, and I don't know if I like the precedent it set. Tony Hawk's Underground is a decent representation here of how the RPG is a genre pretty much every other genre can crossover with(even weird stuff like puzzles), and while it can go wrong, it's often a great way to revitalize a genre getting stale. Soul Caliber is sadly just a reminder of how frustrating I found Injustice 2 recently because, yeah, that series is sadly a walking representation of the control issues you talk about in fighting games. Morrowind... I wish I could love this game, but I find it frustrating how long it takes to get anywhere. I realize part of that is meant to serve the immersion, but it makes me want a game that tries what Morrowind does, but does it in a setting with cars, or some other means of getting around faster. I bring this up because one of the biggest barriers to me ever getting back into Morrowind is just how long and tedious travel is to anywhere the game's in universe fast travel doesn't cover.

    3. One Must Fall 2097 - best fighting game ever. Almost nobody dies or is seriously hurt, because the fights are between multi story high robots piloted by remote. The pilots are all interesting, and the main game has good RPG mechanics. Did I mention each robot has its own way to play? And that the music should have won an award.

    • @mitchmcnair4222
      @mitchmcnair4222 10 месяцев назад

@@IFinishedAVideoGame I'm really not sure how to answer that question. I love RPGs because the strategy of them, of figuring out the right way to approach a boss to defeat them or the right characters to bring to a fight. So I loved FF13 for example because I found it very deep tactically with the buffs, debuffs, and timing when you switch between a tank/heal, chaining, or damage damage set up. A tactical RPG like FF tactics or Triangle Strategy adds positioning and terrain to the equation so I get that there's a difference, but I don't really know where to draw the line as to what's the strategic vs the RPG side of difficulty - if a certain map really favors your mages, is that a strategy thing or no different from a boss weak to magic in a Final Fantasy game?
I guess what I'll say is that characters are more tools in your kit then PC's you build up and alter through the game. Like there is no job system, so you aren't picking what type of class to build your each character to, instead each character has set skills that you can upgrade to improve their niche or get more utility out of them. So a high damage mage character might pick up a skill that refunds the cast on kill, while another mage might instead refund on a terrain type they favor, giving them each a unique niche. Said niche might mean they are better for some fights then others, and there are absolutely some really tough fights that require good strategy, favor some characters, and require using the team you brought to it's fullest. I really enjoyed those maps and certainly had to retry fights at times, but there are 4 difficulty levels so if normal proves to require to much fiddly positioning then there's options to lower the difficulty up to twice so it's less punishing if you mistakenly leave someone vulnerable.

    • @mitchmcnair4222

Actually I'd say give the demo a try. There's the prologue demo, which is just the first 3 chapters of the game and plays the same, but there's also the debut demo which covers chapters a little later (I believe 6,7, and 8) and included one of the toughest maps in the game. It was the first demo and there are minor differences, but it really showcases the tactical side. Either is a good intro but if you are really worried you won't like the strategy/tactical side then play the debut demo and if you love it you'll love the game.

Absolutely! Main focus is still absolutely going to be on Lengthy Retrospectives but these are a fun little side project in between the really big ones!

I think the reason Silent Hill 2’s monsters are in such a spotlight instead of the important story elements is that it’s much easier for people to deal with the surface level horror than the deep wounds of heartbreak and pain of the psyche. The monsters are cool because that way you can like something about a really good game without having to remember what it feels to suffer every time. On top of that, people who don’t have a point of contact with the themes and plot of the game can also interact with it in a somewhat meaningful way even if they can’t necessarily relate to the pain or the horror of what Silent Hill 2 is trying to convey.
