@Shinshocks - It's a reference to the Hannibal TV series that Menaker likes to use every so often. His mind palace is the IMDB of political pundits and operators.
As I listened to this episode, I realized I had mixed up James Ellroy with Elmore Leonard. I was thinking "man, Elmore Leonard's novels are a million times darker than I had been led to believe."
I think I recall Matt finding it entertaining albeit middling, until Spacey assassinated someone and checked out. Couldn't take it seriously or on its own terms of this POTUS/candidate was gonna do these risky things and revealing a carelessness towards how it portrays power and how it's exerted.
Can be, a lot of noir the ambiguity is just the surface and the heroes are usually chivalrous heroes. Nick and Nora, Marlowe are heroic despite the surface action. But then you do get the hard boiled bastards like the Continental Op who could be a villain in another book
Chinatown, LA Confidential and who framed Rodger rabbit are the father, the son and holy spirit of California Noir
"California Noir" also brings to mind "To Live and Die in L.A." for me.
@@rb5519 California re-noired itself in the 80s.
Great movie. Haven't watched it in years but it's definitely one that stayed in the mind palace.
@Shinshocks - Mind is the staging area where all the processing goes on. Mind palace is where all the precious formative memories are stored.

I was 15 minutes into this video before I realized they weren’t talking about the video game L.A. Noir 😅
I think they’re being a little hard on Basinger in this, I think she gives a very sensitive performance.
Rollo…Thomasi…
we watched this movie in high school for some reason
PE teacher?
I've never heard Hobbesian pronounced that way, that woke me up quickly.

_They Live_ was not set in Los Angeles by accident. "THIS IS YOUR GOD. MARRY AND REPRODUCE. STAY ASLEEP..."
Chapo should talk House of Cards

House of cards isn’t even a movie. “Deck of cards” would be a good one to review and it *is* an actual movie
@@jackstraw262 They've done series many times.
Eww!
Isn’t the ambiguity between hero’s and villains the thematic core of all noir ?

@@GrimReader Kiss Me Deadly, Mike Hammer springs to mind, as the hard bitten, and not to chivalrous, if he's got a core of decency, it's buried deep.

"ambiguity" doesn't really work with Ellroy's version, there's no real ambiguity, they're all evil
Irish/Scottish people are associated with police overall. I saw Dudley Smith as literally A COP.
Where is Will getting this info about Kevin Spacey and the Royal Family/Epstein?
They go into it in the second appearance trianon made on Chapo in April 2020.

Man, I bet this Bessner guy keeps his own farts in jars.
They really should have had James Ellroy on to talk about this book.
That would have been fun.

I love how Americans really emphasise the two syllables of 'noir'. Just love it.
