I started studying Aikido before Segal Movies. 1984.A neighbor of mine lived in Japan. And he studied Aikido extensively. I already had been training in Poekalan Tjimdei and Jeet Kune Do at the time. And we trained and spar a lot. And he tossed me around a lot. He was very tough to hit. Eluded most of my techniques. Unfortunately he moved away. And I started Shotokan. That was 1986. And it wasn’t till 1989 that I started exploring Aikido. And been training and adding to my tool box of self defense. Many Aikido School do not train in Aikido as Segal does. More eclectic than actual combat. What Segal does is COMBAT AIKIDAI. THE REAL SHIT. IVE HAD TO USE IT IN A CONFRONTATION. AND VERY EFFECTIVE.

@alexscott730 JUST so we have a understanding. I can use what I've learned in one style. Or all four at once. Let you think on that. 55 years of learning to fuck you up. Why I started Aikido. I needed a more peaceful mentality to deal with assholes.

Awesome! Definitely looking forward to that deep dive into the differences. Seagal's hand deflections were an absolute game changer for Aikido. He really did his research into how the samurai fought and brought back much of that lethality to Aikido. It's important to note that most Aikido schools teach the kata version of Aikido, which was heavily abstracted and much of its entry points and strikes removed due to cultural changes going on in Japan at the time. They didn't want killing arts anymore, but we do! Seagal made huge leaps in restoring Aikido.

There is a HUGE difference, between a student that is just there "Casually".. takes frequent rests, and rarely trains outside of class... from a student that puts in 110% (maximum potentials, at all times), and trains outside of class.. for Several Hours at a time, every single day. The Casual student, will virtually NEVER become Combat capable, even with the best of knowledge... because they will never approach "Masterclass" levels within their skillsets. He is also correct about "Copying" vs "Understanding"... (more below)
The techniques that you learn in the arts, are often designed to be able to be applied in many different ways. If you dont know the Principle foundations of what these techs really are... and how they are operating... then its likely that you will ONLY know how to apply them in the single way that you were taught. And even then... you Still might not be doing the tech 100% properly... as you may be using incorrect mass vectors, and or poor structure. You also need to know when a tech is NOT going to work... what its weaknesses are, and the "whys" behind it.
In Wing Chun, for example... there are techs that work fantastic at one certain RANGE... but any closer, or any further away.. and you have to change to use a different Technique instead (or to adapt with footwork, and angles, to regain that functionality). Wing Chun also tends to train against linear attacks... and not against typical boxers strikes. The linear attacks teach the principles... however, without learning how to adapt to non-linear attacks (odd angles, and larger circles)... then you will be lacking in combat functionality + experience. Furthermore... Some things work well against a person of similar strength and mass... but once the OP is much larger and stronger... then you will again have to use different methods/techs. If you had never tested yourself against much larger and stronger OPs... then you might never have learned that lesson... until it was way too late.
As a former private teacher... I can say that It may be beneficial to vanish for a while... to "Test" the students (see if they actually kept working or not).. but for the most part... the teacher should always be watching, to correct students from various critical Errors that they may be making. If the teacher has a trusted Senior student... then things are different... because the SR student is good enough to catch and correct the others... without the need for the Master to be present. Its like being at a finger-painting level... in an Oil painting class. The students at that basic level... wont get much from a Masterclass level painters experience... as they are still struggling with basic essentials, such as how to hold and control the brushes (physical skills and muscles, that must be developed by each individual).
So... what he has said so far, aligns with what Ive experienced in the Arts, and my own personal road to Masterclass level skillsets.

First is obviously his first cop movie Above the Law with not very known actress at the time gorgeous Sharon Stone who played his wife, great action with his incredible showcase of Aikido moves. Second movie is On Deadly Grounds with Micheal Caine oil industrialist as his evil boss with very conscient iou’s environmental message in the script great acting great action. And lastly Fire Down Below featuring an incredible cast with Kris Kristofferson Marg Helgenberg Randy Travis and many more, fantastic movie another environmentally targeted script with his own touch of music that he made for the movie, this movie is a gem folks from start to finish simply well put together. To bad hollywood weren’t interested in promoting these movies because they could’ve made it big at the box office. Enjoy these movies you will love the energy and spiritual message the youll feel from especially the last two movie mentioned.

Never doubted Seagal as a martial artist. Nothing but respect and this interview reinforced that.
However, I still doubt Seagal as a fighter, a story teller and Aikido as a fighting style (which for me is very different from martial arts).

I went to a state university for a while that was teaching Aikido and another harder Style in they're continuing education courses. This was before I'd even heard of Steven Seagal or even before he made his first movies. After a couple of weeks switch to the harder Style because Aikido took so long just to learn a few moves whereas the harder Style you could learn a lot about fighting very quickly. I just didn't think that Aikido was that practical unless you used it in conjunction with another art.

Security or bouncers would benefit well knowing Aikido. All I will say. Very effective. My 1st KO was a aikido throw. It works i the right situation. I have trained more striking arts but only KO in real life situation was the toss. I have done 20 years of security and trained some with the army. A instructor in the army i met was trained in Aïkido and was amazing. Seen him do impressive things. He was 4 real.

Really enjoyable interview but I'm skeptical about how even handed he's being. Honestly he kinda seems to be Seagal's Sky Benson. In the way that Sky was lauding Frank Dux in such an uncritical way, and IMO spewing a fair bit of flim flammy nonsense. Because Sky is invested in the Dux brand. He's got too much skin in the game to be completely upfront.
All that said there's shades of gray. Seagal, and Seagal's brand of aikido, are more legit than Dux ryu/faast/ninjitsu IMO (and unlike Dux's "fighting style" I think Seagal does have something to offer in terms of practical and effective fighting techniques), but the lack of pressure testing is why you end up seeing these guys let themselves fall so far out of shape, and tending to rather tell you than show you.

In all my 25 years of Aikido, this, like many other stories made me laugh. Aside from his infatuation with Seagal, I respectfully don't believe a word about him attacking Seagal anyway he wanted and then finding himself on the floor.
Knowing the "culture" and "insecurities" of Aikidoka" they like to borrow similar stories or stretch the truth about their master like they did with O'sensei, i.e. O'sensei's students said they witnessed O'sensei shout "BOOM" and a train would flip over on the rails (Ref: book titled "Abundant Peace by J.Stevens) and I don't think Seagal would have have been stupid enough to expose himself like that, especially to someone he doesn't know and who had done other martial arts.
Aikdoka have huge ego's because there's no pressure testing. That's why many go into it in their later years. You only have to see Seagal's black belt test and watch what happens to nage 99.9% of the time; who ends up in a chaotic mess, overwhelmed with reality and getting taken to the floor within seconds and squashed with all their knowledge of Seagal's deflections, techniques etc gone out the window in the blink of an eye. That's reality folks, not the dojo. The sad thing was the student was made to get up, start again. It's all there for you to see on RUclips from past tests. I just wish I could have seen Seagal take his own test with non students who were as tall as he.
I believe he was "told" what attack to come at him with. He was probably told "come at me with Shomen -uchi, Yokomen uchi or punch to the face". It was sort of pre-arranged.
It was Seagal's wife's FATHER'S Dojo who was a legitimate Aikido sensei. Seagal did not open, start or own the school. He was a teacher at the school on behalf of his father in law because Seagal married his daughter. Simple to understand. Sorry to burst the bubble.
What Sensei Elliot does works but it works when it's choreographed and it's not a REAL altercation. There is a big difference. Elliot seems a real nice guy. I like him. Probably one of the nicer ones of Seagal's students who got caught up in the whole "hero hollywood worship" cult like mentality and treated their students like trash. Oh well, the whole Seagal cult like association eventually collapsed with most students leaving. What goes around comes around.
When I hear stories like this, It cements my reasons even more why I left Aikido, why I knew I had outgrown it and why most others did to. THANK GOODNESS!!!
I said 15 years back Aikido was dying. Rokas did a great job of explaining the reasons of its massive decline.
Great interview though, Viking. I'm really enjoying it. You really have got great interview skills. National Geographic or Discovery should hire you.

I agree with the exaggerated story being highly suspicious. That being said, did you train in Seagal's style of Aikido, or the traditional stuff? Because there's a huge difference. Traditional Aikido is an abstraction of a genuine battlefield fighting art, whereas Tenshin Aikido is much more practical thanks to Seagal and his research into the Samurai. Traditional on its own has excellent anatomical knowledge and an advanced concept behind it, but it had all the entry points and striking removed. This was deiberate on the part of Ushiba. A reflection of the cultural changes going on in Japan at the time, where killing arts were being cast aside. Ushiba basically reduced it to a kata, but one that still carries much of the knowledge needed to reconstruct it. Obviously you can't fight anyone with a kata but with more research and actual combat training, Aikido can be translated and updated into something legit. This stuff actually has huge potential.

@@justinwallace269 I have done both. When i went to Japan I went straight to his dojo in Osaka. Aikidoka are synonymous for these "tall tales". It's a bit like O'sensei's students telling their stories about him, i.e. O'sensei shouted "BOOM" and a train would flip over. Hahhaah. I mean really. It's like a Japanese thing to keep the mystery and legends going. I get it but stupid at the same time. Also, don't forget, you can his students taking their multiple dan black belt tests and if you look at what happens 99.9% of the time they just get taken to the ground and get squashed.
