I started studying Aikido before Segal Movies. 1984.A neighbor of mine lived in Japan. And he studied Aikido extensively. I already had been training in Poekalan Tjimdei and Jeet Kune Do at the time. And we trained and spar a lot. And he tossed me around a lot. He was very tough to hit. Eluded most of my techniques. Unfortunately he moved away. And I started Shotokan. That was 1986. And it wasn’t till 1989 that I started exploring Aikido. And been training and adding to my tool box of self defense. Many Aikido School do not train in Aikido as Segal does. More eclectic than actual combat. What Segal does is COMBAT AIKIDAI. THE REAL SHIT. IVE HAD TO USE IT IN A CONFRONTATION. AND VERY EFFECTIVE.
Sure fanboy...sure...lol
@alexscott730 JUST so we have a understanding. I can use what I've learned in one style. Or all four at once. Let you think on that. 55 years of learning to fuck you up. Why I started Aikido. I needed a more peaceful mentality to deal with assholes.
It's really nice to hear positive stories about Seagal from a person who actually trained with him for more than just a couple seminars.
MC, concur. Positive discussion about Steven Seagal from a direct senior student of Seagal's. No jealous nor hateful comments. But true acknowledgment and bonafide account of Steven Seagal's speed and effectiveness of tenshin aikido.
@@DonWilkey2013 It's refreshing really. I'm tired of hearing negative stories told from a third person perspective from people that have never even met Seagal, let alone trained with him.
Facts. I don't believe the stories about Seagal that are bad. The closest to him; veteran actors, politicians and others have only said good things about him.
Korrek
I'm sure there was a lot of training but even more eating.
Great story and shows the real side of Seagal. No need to believe all the false stories and bad talk. Seagal is a global treasure, good man.
Aside from the raping....lol
@@alexscott730 There's not any proof for that besides claims and hate towards him. Seagal certainly has a big ego and is extremely influenced by the Japanese culture, so his approach in the western world has certainly been overwhelming for both men and women who have met him. But I don't believe the things they say about him.
@@alcottdevalte7440Buddy,he's been a weirdo since the beginning. You're just another fanboy mesmorized by his garbage movies...wake up
Great second part of the interview with Sensei Elliot Freeman. Outstanding interview, Viking Samurai 🤺 It's very cool to hear about his training with Steven Seagal 🙌🥋👍
Whether you like him or hate him, he is an accomplished actor and a martial artist as for his personal life he is just like most hollywood people.
What are most Hollywood people like?
Sensei Freeman👊👊🙏🙏❤️❤️
It was a fantastic interview👏👏
It's nice to hear some one speak reverently of Seagal.
You never bite the hand of the guy who feeds you 😂
Very interesting as a big Steven Seagal fan. His first films in particular are legendary
Great Job on this
I've never heard anyone talk about Seagal the way Elliot Freeman did, he holds him in such high esteem.
Sensei Jorge Angulo does as well.
That might be before Seagal became a wife beating scum bag liar. Who knows?
They're both clueless fanboys
Steven is an excellent marksman too.
I saw Hard to Kill and I wasn't very impressed until I saw his next film Marked fot Death.i trained in aikido for a short time in middle school, then went back in my young adult years cause of Seagal.Although I don't train in aikido anymore, I'm still a fan! It's good to see him in a positive light!
I would like to see you do an interview with Jeff Speakman.
I 2nd that. And what's Speakman's reaction to Steven Seagal commenting on Jeff being a ' good kid ' ?
Yes!! Speakman interview!!!!!
Great content! Thanks for getting these old stories out!
Fantastic stories thank you so much both of you for this.
This is awesome!!! Looking forward to the next bit! :)
Steven is from Buena Park CA.
He attended Buena Park High school.
To my surprise, during the Scott Adkins interview with Steven; Steven mentioned that he didn't graduate from High School.
He took a test (GED) and went off to Japan.
I always thought his story was an interesting one.
Love The Last Dragon as an 80s kid that movie was my absolute favorite
Great interview Viking !!! Great insight into Seagal training !!
One step closer in interviewing Seagal ??
I've never heard anyone say anything positive about Seagal. It makes a nice change.
Watched a lot of your videos-- First time commenting. You're doing a great job amigo!!!
Thanks a ton!
Awesome interview Viking Samurai👍
All martial arts contains multi level of extremities its just a matter how smart and precise the application is presented in the moment of truth
Fantastic interview!
good stuff guys. really interesting. thanks.
This interview is really amazing
Thanks!
Great video. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Great interview. Elliot has a lot of respect for Seagal.
Awesome! Definitely looking forward to that deep dive into the differences. Seagal's hand deflections were an absolute game changer for Aikido. He really did his research into how the samurai fought and brought back much of that lethality to Aikido. It's important to note that most Aikido schools teach the kata version of Aikido, which was heavily abstracted and much of its entry points and strikes removed due to cultural changes going on in Japan at the time. They didn't want killing arts anymore, but we do! Seagal made huge leaps in restoring Aikido.
@StanlyStud,
Just go and learn Judo or Jiu-Jitsu if you're into Japanese martial arts. Aikido is the lowest watered down version of Aikijujutsu.
@StanlyStud,
I've taken Kali before. Kinda like it.
🤦
@@alexscott730 Lol, speak your mind, son. Don't be shy.
Steven Seagal is 💯% ligit. Why people disrespect him ,I have no clue.
Maybe because he's a liar.
IQ too small to understand what Aikido IS realy about...kind of people who think Tai Chi Chuan IS Just a morning Gymnastic...those who are still wondering If Jesus was the son of god, so why couldn't he free himself in the Cross...😔
great interview, look forward to more, maybe one day you can get to meet sensei seagal :)
This was dope.
i have heard from two senseis honoured by Japan Goverment, that Steven Seagal as them was taught Daito Ryu Aikijujitsu and this is way more advanced and contains many killing technics.
Great videos very interesting 💪
Glad you like them!
I've been doing Aikido for 35+ years, Seagal was the first to introduce the real effect of Aikido in America!
35 yrs of " training " down the drain...
I think seagal's "path beyond thought" was excellent, and his warly movies were good, i did enjoy his tv series true justice
I agree path beyond was good, and i really liked true justice, it was a return to form of his early movies.
You should try to get Former Warner Brothers Exec Bill Daly. He got the chance to work with Seagal back in the 90s. He doesn't sugarcoat shit, he'll tell you the truth, Seagal was basically his own worst enemy.
Awesome interview. Suggestions for the future are Pat Johnson, Chuck Norris, Chip Wright and Bob Barrow.
Jeff Wincot
I remember this very well I trained with one of his students intense but graceful and powerful.Hey quick question what ever happened to David Bradley
Good question ruclips.net/video/j34053234zg/видео.html
Viking thanks for all your work and busting all the lies about Seagal.
Seagal's Dojo in Japan was actually his father in law's Dojo, his first wife who he abandoned in Japan before he married his second wife while he was still married to his first wife.
Here we go folks another hater that attempts to vilify Steven Seagal because of what he heard about from the hollywood haters that couldn’t control him and force him into wearing a dress fir the lgbtq community that controlled of hollywood already. The truth is that he didn’t abandoned her she refused to follow him its called a separation. Don’t play the fake offended cupcake when you perfectly know that this type of failed relationships happens all the time and that his situation wasn’t any different than anyone else’s failed relationship. Go hate somewhere else smh 🤦♂️
Viking Samurai, good interview. Is this your home for this interview, or Sensei Elliot Freeman's home that you're discussing Steven Seagal ? Nice decor.
Elliot's
Any chance we might see an appearance from the legend himself maybe? That would be cool!
steven rules daddy !
🤠👍
Viking these interviews are great. I saw the Cynthia Rothrock short, will you be interviewing her about her movie? Gotta get her on the show 😁
She'll be a future interview, yes
@@VikingSamurai ah that’s sweet! you’re a rockstar, Viking!
Sense Seagal is so awesome
I've told friends and other people you don't have to like Steven Seagal as a person, but when it comes to Aikido hes the real deal. Let's not get it twisted. He lied and exaggerated about his life a lot. When he didn't have to. He really has accomplished a lot. This video is very informative..
Lied?
I heard Mr Freeman mentioned Moo Duk Kwan a couple times, so he's trained in Tang Soo Do?
Awesome stuff!!! Maybe he can you hook you up with a Steven seagal interview an go train with Seagal as well.
There is a HUGE difference, between a student that is just there "Casually".. takes frequent rests, and rarely trains outside of class... from a student that puts in 110% (maximum potentials, at all times), and trains outside of class.. for Several Hours at a time, every single day. The Casual student, will virtually NEVER become Combat capable, even with the best of knowledge... because they will never approach "Masterclass" levels within their skillsets. He is also correct about "Copying" vs "Understanding"... (more below)
The techniques that you learn in the arts, are often designed to be able to be applied in many different ways. If you dont know the Principle foundations of what these techs really are... and how they are operating... then its likely that you will ONLY know how to apply them in the single way that you were taught. And even then... you Still might not be doing the tech 100% properly... as you may be using incorrect mass vectors, and or poor structure. You also need to know when a tech is NOT going to work... what its weaknesses are, and the "whys" behind it.
In Wing Chun, for example... there are techs that work fantastic at one certain RANGE... but any closer, or any further away.. and you have to change to use a different Technique instead (or to adapt with footwork, and angles, to regain that functionality). Wing Chun also tends to train against linear attacks... and not against typical boxers strikes. The linear attacks teach the principles... however, without learning how to adapt to non-linear attacks (odd angles, and larger circles)... then you will be lacking in combat functionality + experience. Furthermore... Some things work well against a person of similar strength and mass... but once the OP is much larger and stronger... then you will again have to use different methods/techs. If you had never tested yourself against much larger and stronger OPs... then you might never have learned that lesson... until it was way too late.
As a former private teacher... I can say that It may be beneficial to vanish for a while... to "Test" the students (see if they actually kept working or not).. but for the most part... the teacher should always be watching, to correct students from various critical Errors that they may be making. If the teacher has a trusted Senior student... then things are different... because the SR student is good enough to catch and correct the others... without the need for the Master to be present. Its like being at a finger-painting level... in an Oil painting class. The students at that basic level... wont get much from a Masterclass level painters experience... as they are still struggling with basic essentials, such as how to hold and control the brushes (physical skills and muscles, that must be developed by each individual).
So... what he has said so far, aligns with what Ive experienced in the Arts, and my own personal road to Masterclass level skillsets.
Epic manspread!
There are three great movies that to this day are my favourites. First is obviously his first cop movie Above the Law with not very known actress at the time gorgeous Sharon Stone who played his wife, great action with his incredible showcase of Aikido moves. Second movie is On Deadly Grounds with Micheal Caine oil industrialist as his evil boss with very conscient iou’s environmental message in the script great acting great action. And lastly Fire Down Below featuring an incredible cast with Kris Kristofferson Marg Helgenberg Randy Travis and many more, fantastic movie another environmentally targeted script with his own touch of music that he made for the movie, this movie is a gem folks from start to finish simply well put together. To bad hollywood weren’t interested in promoting these movies because they could’ve made it big at the box office. Enjoy these movies you will love the energy and spiritual message the youll feel from especially the last two movie mentioned.
Aikido flow,,a london channel is a very good take on partical aikido guys if interested on the actual application of the art.
Segal did that whisper move in Out for Justice. Then kicked the guy that abandoned the puppy in the avocado.
Say what you will but if your punch doesnt land on seagal and he gets your hand, wrist, elbow or shoulder its lego time. Your going end up in pieces.
Hello, Viking Samurai. I think all Martial Arts works, but it does depend on the practitioner. Not all Martial Artists are the same. You have the basic humans, the good ones and Martial Artists like - Steven Seagal, Bruce Lee, Van Damme, Donnie Yen, Joe Lewis, Jim Kelly, Jet Li, Royce Gracie, Frank Shamrock, Mark Dacoscos, Michael Jai White, Billy Blanks, etc, etc.
TERRANCE OUT
I trained under Sensei Freeman in St. Louis for a couple of years about 17 years ago. Sensei Freeman was an amazing and powerful master. Say what you want about Aikido, but I felt the power first hand. He told me me some of these stories about Seagal. He once told me that Taka Sensei (Seagal) is the best martial artist on the planet and no else is even close.
Thanks for sharing!
Dude is an expert in black belt rizz lol 😂😂
Weird radio static noise in the background
prime seagal was great
He'd be a good interview taimak
Do Cynthia Rothrock.... What is like to fight against Cynthia Rothrock?
Stephen is one heck of guy. Things they say about him is nothing but a lie!!!🥶🥶🥶
Hey Viking Samurai,,,what's your diet ?
Balanced, lots of fruits and veggies, and then complex carbs and meat, I usually divide my plate in 3rds. No fried food really and only sugar after workouts to refuel glycogen, plus lots of water.
Seagal definitely is good at Aikido (forgive my spelling, I'm from viking land Denmark), but being a taekwondo nerd myself, I'm not very impressed with Aikido when it comes to fighting.
Seagal never owned a dojo in Japan. He was married to the daughter of the owner. When the father died, ownership went to the wife and the daughter managed the dojo. Seagal was just an instructor.
My favorite comment from anybody that has worked with Segal is from Michael jia White. Steven could be the funniest guy in the world if he just got out if his own way.
BOUT FUCKING TIME. WE HERE THE REAL SIDE OF SHIHAN SEGAL.
Learn steven that he must respect other masters and dojos . Real master is no arogant or talk about others .
Seagal was a true master of Aikido but Hollywood broke him and his years of trainings
Interesting interview but, it doesn't explain one thing. Why people hating on Steven Seagal? Why most of the people believe that he is liar and fake? Like, what's the reason behind all of that. I also seen people making jokes about him all around, like about how he runs in some of his movies in some scenes. So yeah, would be interesting to understand also a reason behind the hate, and not just information about, how good Steven Seagal was in his prime.
would you type your theories of these haters' jealous and envious comments towards Seagal ? That is if you've the time to.
@@DonWilkey2013 Well, I have many theories. One is simple hate, the other one is because they jealous of him. Or maybe he said something wrong somewhere and people took it seriously or out of context. I don't know.
Haters going to hate. Likely he stepped on toes of people in positions that didn’t appreciate it and so the6 get revenge through slander
INTERESTING....ALSO INTERESTING THAT YT just demonatized my channel for putting up some Seagal fight scenes...lot's of people put up movie scenes w no copyright issues yet for some reason promoting Seagal gets my channel demonotised.(not copywright but Reused Content w NO Warning..hmmm?)
U usually want to use less than 10 seconds of a video clip from a movie
No copyright strikes....issue seems to be Seagal....
@@DanTheWolfman The "ELITE" do not want the Lemming / Slave-Class, to have Combat level skillsets available to them. They have been intentionally Degrading the combat arts, into watered down sportized versions... for a VERY long time now. This accelerated greatly, in the Post-Industrial Era... but was even happening pre-industrial.
They even have different combat training instruction, depending on what position you are, on the ladder. Basic army soldiers, are considered grunt cannon fodder... and get the worst of the worst. Navy Seals... get the more advanced training, as they are considered more valuable. Secret / Special OPs, might get some of the higher / highest levels of training... as they are considered the most valuable / irreplaceable. They also know that by doing this... they can always use a higher skilled OP, to take out a lower skilled OP that has gotten out of control.
Cool 🎉🎉🎉
Seagal is 6.4 and not 6.6.
What do you think of Dan an Santo forgive my spelling
Never doubted Seagal as a martial artist. Nothing but respect and this interview reinforced that.
However, I still doubt Seagal as a fighter, a story teller and Aikido as a fighting style (which for me is very different from martial arts).
Anyhow, interesting video and can't wait for the rest of the interview.
Sounds very cultish , especially the giveaway rhetoric “ higher level” “ high level” … Qigong often does this too…
I went to a state university for a while that was teaching Aikido and another harder Style in they're continuing education courses. This was before I'd even heard of Steven Seagal or even before he made his first movies. After a couple of weeks switch to the harder Style because Aikido took so long just to learn a few moves whereas the harder Style you could learn a lot about fighting very quickly. I just didn't think that Aikido was that practical unless you used it in conjunction with another art.
Security or bouncers would benefit well knowing Aikido. All I will say. Very effective. My 1st KO was a aikido throw. It works i the right situation. I have trained more striking arts but only KO in real life situation was the toss. I have done 20 years of security and trained some with the army. A instructor in the army i met was trained in Aïkido and was amazing. Seen him do impressive things. He was 4 real.
did the sensai pay this guy to butter him up?
AIKIDO CHAGED MY MARTIAL ATTITUDE. I WAS VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE TWO 2 HOUR VIDEO OF O’SENSEI TEACHING N JAPAN. WISH I HAD THEM TODAY. LOAN THEM TO MY GIRLFRIEND SON. WE BROKE UP. AND THEY GOT LOST IN THE SHUFFLE. REALLY SUCKS. BUT LEARNED A LOT FROM THEM. THANKS FOR THE TALK ABOUT A AIKIDO ICON.
This guy seems just as full of it as Seagal.
At 7:50 when he is asked "How often were you meeting up and training with Seagal"?...he did NOT provide a good answer in my opinion...I will admit I have not heard the whole interview...but it sounded to me like he dodged the question. Sounds to me like he trained with other instructors - but not with Seagal too much.
He even adopted sensei Seagal's physique.
Actually, it ain't true that Seagal was the first Westerner to have a Dojo in Japan 'cause that Dojo wasn't his, but his father-in-law's. He only taught classes on some occasion when his father-in-law was feelin' under the weather. That's somethin' that's completely false.
So let me see if I can understand - everybody’s wrong? And you’re right ?
Respek to Steven Seagall...
Steven has no problem transcending borders.
Really enjoyable interview but I'm skeptical about how even handed he's being. Honestly he kinda seems to be Seagal's Sky Benson. In the way that Sky was lauding Frank Dux in such an uncritical way, and IMO spewing a fair bit of flim flammy nonsense. Because Sky is invested in the Dux brand. He's got too much skin in the game to be completely upfront.
All that said there's shades of gray. Seagal, and Seagal's brand of aikido, are more legit than Dux ryu/faast/ninjitsu IMO (and unlike Dux's "fighting style" I think Seagal does have something to offer in terms of practical and effective fighting techniques), but the lack of pressure testing is why you end up seeing these guys let themselves fall so far out of shape, and tending to rather tell you than show you.
Elliot Freeman can still show you, not just "tell" you. All of Seagal's 1st generation black belts are outstanding (and no, not all of them are "fat").
@@AztecUnshaven I want to believe that I'm just saying if you look at the comments here I'm not the only one who is skeptical.
@@vultureguy33 Respectfully, an internet comments section is often a cesspool of ignorance and misinformation. Not a good place to glean quality sources.
A healthy amount of skepticism is good, I can respect that. My advice would be for you to visit any of Seagal's old school black belts (like Mr. Freeman here in the video), many of them still teach today in the USA and abroad. That way you can judge for yourself firsthand.
Good luck and train hard my friend.
Your idea of pressure testing is probably not real pressure. All the techniques were pressure tested in real combat. The only thing needing testing is the practitioner, not the technique.
Elliott never did movies?is Steven gonna return to movies?
Bunch of Bologna this Guy and Seagal together couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag
True. I have fought both of them with 1 hand tied behind my back
Weird question: do you watch UFC VS?
I do
Puttin Stooge!
You should have asked him what he thought about Seagal cosying up to Vladimir Putan. I doubt he would have answered.
That would have been very interesting. It's odd that he's such friends with Putin and Solovyev and claims to be a fan of The Dalai Lama when China is waging a genocidel and ethnic cleansing campaign against Tibet. Putin's biggest Ally is China right now. There seems to be some serious cognitive dissonance there.
This guy sounds like he's ready to get engagement ring for Seagal. Hopefully for him, Putin hasn't already sealed the deal with Seagal.
Guess you have never had a good teacher before

In all my 25 years of Aikido, this, like many other stories made me laugh. Aside from his infatuation with Seagal, I respectfully don't believe a word about him attacking Seagal anyway he wanted and then finding himself on the floor.
Knowing the "culture" and "insecurities" of Aikidoka" they like to borrow similar stories or stretch the truth about their master like they did with O'sensei, i.e. O'sensei's students said they witnessed O'sensei shout "BOOM" and a train would flip over on the rails (Ref: book titled "Abundant Peace by J.Stevens) and I don't think Seagal would have have been stupid enough to expose himself like that, especially to someone he doesn't know and who had done other martial arts.
Aikdoka have huge ego's because there's no pressure testing. That's why many go into it in their later years. You only have to see Seagal's black belt test and watch what happens to nage 99.9% of the time; who ends up in a chaotic mess, overwhelmed with reality and getting taken to the floor within seconds and squashed with all their knowledge of Seagal's deflections, techniques etc gone out the window in the blink of an eye. That's reality folks, not the dojo. The sad thing was the student was made to get up, start again. It's all there for you to see on RUclips from past tests. I just wish I could have seen Seagal take his own test with non students who were as tall as he.
I believe he was "told" what attack to come at him with. He was probably told "come at me with Shomen -uchi, Yokomen uchi or punch to the face". It was sort of pre-arranged.
It was Seagal's wife's FATHER'S Dojo who was a legitimate Aikido sensei. Seagal did not open, start or own the school. He was a teacher at the school on behalf of his father in law because Seagal married his daughter. Simple to understand. Sorry to burst the bubble.
What Sensei Elliot does works but it works when it's choreographed and it's not a REAL altercation. There is a big difference. Elliot seems a real nice guy. I like him. Probably one of the nicer ones of Seagal's students who got caught up in the whole "hero hollywood worship" cult like mentality and treated their students like trash. Oh well, the whole Seagal cult like association eventually collapsed with most students leaving. What goes around comes around.
When I hear stories like this, It cements my reasons even more why I left Aikido, why I knew I had outgrown it and why most others did to. THANK GOODNESS!!!
I said 15 years back Aikido was dying. Rokas did a great job of explaining the reasons of its massive decline.
Great interview though, Viking. I'm really enjoying it. You really have got great interview skills. National Geographic or Discovery should hire you.
Took you long enough to grow out of it
But still following interviews on Aikido..
@@johnchipmanseishinaikido1531 Yeah, why not? I made some good friends and have fond memories of my time in Japan etc
I agree with the exaggerated story being highly suspicious. That being said, did you train in Seagal's style of Aikido, or the traditional stuff? Because there's a huge difference. Traditional Aikido is an abstraction of a genuine battlefield fighting art, whereas Tenshin Aikido is much more practical thanks to Seagal and his research into the Samurai. Traditional on its own has excellent anatomical knowledge and an advanced concept behind it, but it had all the entry points and striking removed. This was deiberate on the part of Ushiba. A reflection of the cultural changes going on in Japan at the time, where killing arts were being cast aside. Ushiba basically reduced it to a kata, but one that still carries much of the knowledge needed to reconstruct it. Obviously you can't fight anyone with a kata but with more research and actual combat training, Aikido can be translated and updated into something legit. This stuff actually has huge potential.
@@justinwallace269 I have done both. When i went to Japan I went straight to his dojo in Osaka. Aikidoka are synonymous for these "tall tales". It's a bit like O'sensei's students telling their stories about him, i.e. O'sensei shouted "BOOM" and a train would flip over. Hahhaah. I mean really. It's like a Japanese thing to keep the mystery and legends going. I get it but stupid at the same time. Also, don't forget, you can his students taking their multiple dan black belt tests and if you look at what happens 99.9% of the time they just get taken to the ground and get squashed.
