17madman Every independent Mom ‘n Pop Shop is different. In fact, they are SO different that unless you are a regular customer with several stores in a locally owned chain, chances are that no two retro games stores are exactly alike, just like the composition of a snowflake. (Except a lot more extreme than that since small businesses are different in every town, state, province, country you visit!!) 😰
Bottom Line, Nintendo Life is a multinational team of online journalists- from both the USA and the UK, so it’s only fitting that they use a dedicated corporate chain with an international market presence for their video. Since GameStop is the last brick and mortar corporation to exclusively sell both used video games AND video gaming licensed merchandise, it only makes sense. 🤔

My gut reaction to this was “we seriously need a video to tell us to manage our hobbies?” But I genuinely like the frame of “we need to make time for ourselves.” All of these come back to being intentional. Intentional timing for play, socialization, spending, and perspective. If I get anxious from a backlog of entertainment, I legitimately think it’s time for me to take a break to regain perspective. Great tips for life, not even just our hobbies. Well done!

Oh man, the bane of my life! Especially seeing as I mostly play games on PC where new games are flying at you continuously and sales are almost always too hard to resist. I would say making lists and making yourself accountable is the best advice. On Steam I sort my library of games into Current, Next, High, Medium, Low priority. It's really hard to make the call sometimes but keeping the Current and Next lists small is the crucial element. I also physically keep a diary of games I start and write down when I finish them and give a quick rating out of 10. This makes me feel more invested in the games I am playing rather than those I am not. But also, just as is said in the video, don't feel guilty for dropping something off your 'currently playing' list. You can always come back to it in a couple years time, just knock it down a rung of the priority ladder.

It really helps me to switch to a Twitch streamer/You Tube gamer mentality. You can't start a game, do a couple of streams and then abandon it forever, or else your viewers will go away or won't remember anything. At least I force myself to finish the main story, then I can come back for post-game whenever I want.

something that helps me is playing my handheld backlog games either during my breaks or lunch at work. And since i almost only play RPG's I tend to just grind the crap out of one on my days off (however I also have an Anime backlog so typically i spend 1 day off on anime and 1 day off on games) and if I end up having plans that day I always bring my handheld backlog games along in case I find the time

    Great tips.
I have started making a concerted effort on my backlog, and focusing on one game really helps, though I'm not totally strict on it and allow myself the odd binge with a few different games. I also allow myself one main home console title (ie something on the Wii or PS2, e.g. I just finished Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands and am now getting into No More Heroes) as well as one on a portable device (just finished Hotel Dusk: Room 215 on DS and am resuming FFVI on GBA).
Buying games is an issue, but I am also trying to trade in games I am not massively into. I did that with about 5 or 6 games the other day and bought 3 as a replacement. Not as disciplined as I want to be, but it's still a reduction.
I also think having a break with a short game after a super long one is wise, unless you have a tonne of time, which I don't.

I love this, so I've had my Steam Account for 12 years, with 900+ games I just purchased on a whim because it was on sale or in a bundle! I just recently got really depressed and deleted my account, starting a new one and promising myself I'm only gonna buy games I REALLY want to play, and will play through them. Starting from scratch feels better because I know I only want the games I've loved and beat already or ones that I just really wanna play through! I'm also gonna focus more on indie titles since those I love so much more than AAA! Though there will still be a few (Elden Ring 😏).

    This is what I did:
    1) Downloaded an app called Backlog
    2) I proceeded to enter every game that I have that I want to play
    3) MOST IMPORTANT DECISION: Accept I will not play all of them. An that is ok. In reality, not all of them are really MUST PLAY.
    4) Delete games I will not play: Mostly games that I have already played, or re release games. For example, have I played Persona 5, I would not play Persona 5 Royal.
    5) I do not go for achievements.
    6) REALIZE THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PLAY EVERYTHING IN ONE YEAR. YOU CAN EXTEND THOSE GAMES IN MULTIPLE YEARS. For example, I have a couple of Dragon Quest games: V, VI, VII and IX. I could easily play one of those per year, or two per year. It depends on what is coming out in the future. Which leads me to the next part of the topic.
    7) Remember that some old games, can come out in the future as remastered version. For example, I will leave DQ IX to play at last, because it is heavily rumored that a Switch version may come out. That would automatically, put DQIX out of my backlog an into my new games list. I did this with Dark Souls Remastered.
How to deal with new releases
I do not fool myself, I will be buying new games. If I wait until I am done with my backlog, I will not be buying new games until after 1 year. So the question is, how do I mix my BACKLOG with new games? Here is what I do:
    1) Made the decision that I was not going to play everything. That I would set aside only a couple of hours a week to play. That number (5-6 hours) times the amount of weeks per year (52) will give me the result of how many hours I will play per year, in my case that would between 260 - 312 hours. Some weeks I will not play anything, but this time I make up on holidays, sick days, etc. Is not like I keep a journal, it just comes natural. With the number of hours I play a year, I came to the conclusion that I will only play 10-12 games per year. This 10-12 will be a mix of old games and new games.
    2) Decided not to buy games on release date. I decided to wait for reviews to see which ones are the MUST PLAY category. Obviously there will be some guilty pleasures in those lists.
    3) Stop buying multiple games at one when I buy a new game. I will buy one or two, that is it. Usually a long game with a short game.

  • @danielvetencourt7586
    @danielvetencourt7586 4 года назад

making a list is the number one priority. Stablishing the order of the games you want to play will make you go for them in an organised way,. If you leave one of your favorite games or one that interests you the most in the last spot of the list will also work as an ecouragement to keep playing.
