Wiley, you absolutely ARE a mechanic. You take old, broken down, “obsolete” machines and make them run again. That is the very definition of not only a mechanic, but a very good mechanic.

Love your old tricks, back to vicegrip clamps, more fun, and make it work! You always make me smile, watching these great video's. The Vicegrip and some old red wire rules. That engine started very easily. Cool Gator machine. Those paddocks with all these treasures to play with, absolute heaven. Keep them video's coming. And the RAM was perfect for adjusting the front steering wheel.

I worked for Cat for 45 years and build and tested about 30k my own self. We ran Sperry engines with single turbo, N/A, and marine engines . The engines ran from 230 hp non turbo , 325 hp Sperry, Ford, and GM , and the marine version was 425/450 hp . The biggest issues with the 3208 was rear crank seals and bad weld on the oil coolers. The engine was designed to be throw away engines… 500k and reporter…. they were built so good they have some equipment that ran over 2 mil miles and the truck , combine , or yacht would rust out the frames or the boats were traded after warranty. Drug smugglers would have two 3208 marine engines in their boats and could out run the Coast Guard. I was in the Air National Guard when we acquired two new R9 fuel trucks both were built in the mid eighty’s we ran those until we got the new Osh Kosh R11in the mid 90s . Those fuel trucks carried 5000 gallons of JP4/8 we took two to cover an air show 90 miles away and without air ride seats. They could hit about 73 miles an hour on good roads but the had to be on hard pan or concrete/asphalt any mud or loose sand you were done for… good times built the engines in two of the three trucks and put over 9k hours on the one and 14 k on the other. The third truck was a “ garage stall queen “ and was packed up and shipped to Honduras for their Air Force to use on President Reagan’s war on drugs. Ironic …

Hello Hank &!Wiley. In the 1980s up to around the mid 1990s, The tandem dump trucks that were the mainstay within the highway department here in Ky had were the Ford F-800s with the 3208 Caterpillar engines with the RoadRanger transmissions. The steering radius on these trucks were unbelievable compared to the Internationals with the early DT466 engines also with the RoadRanger transmissions that it required at least a 40 acre field to turn around in.
I remember that the Fords that were powered with the 3208 Caterpillars were not always the fastest, But would really haul some serious loads.
Our Ford F-700/F-750 trucks had the 8.2 Detroit Diesels that seemed to always be solid performers with the exception of the stupid Lucas-Girling brakes which were basically electric over hydraulic that were always causing some sort of issues.
We also had some of the Chevrolet C-70 trucks with the 8.2 Detroit Diesel engine that the air compressor bolts for the air brakes were constantly breaking off in the cylinder heads. We were so glad when those trucks were pulled from the fleet to be auctioned off at our equipment auction in Frankfort Ky.
When I first started with the KYTC, We had several of the Galion road graders and a few Huber road graders. I think that the Hubers may have used the Detroit Diesel engines. When the Galion & Huber road graders started to be pulled from the fleet to be auctioned, We had John Deere graders and we had a few Champion road graders and a New Holland road grader. The John Deere’s were pretty reliable as well as the Champions for the most part. The New Holland was pretty decent when it was fairly new, But didn’t age very well compared to the other graders. The welding that I had to perform on some of those graders was pretty extreme to say the least. Looks like your Dodge got the job done rather well Hank.
