Don't know about elsewhere but over here we yanks call the yokes holding the fork tubes the "tree". Since the tree from that bike is offset it's a "raked" tree as it increases the rake of the forks for a more chopper look. Now that sloppy bearing not fitting the neck shaft of the tree is most definitely "fubar" ........thats the word of the day for this one !!! Fubar being the opposite of perfectamundo !! So in yank speak that would be a "hill-billy" raked tree which can provide a very much increased level of excitement when riding !! Glad those carbs kept you from taking it on a test ride at the time of purchase lol . Would have made an exciting video though, with the jam up brake caliper and floppy neck !!! Can't wait to see the Urchfab improved version. Just mind the rake and trail geometry of the front end if you use those fork tubes. They are probably too long for it to come out right. However a set of Urchfab made springer forks with the axle leg extension would tidy up the trail angle proper and do away with excess fork tube load and the drag on the fork compression if you had a mind for that much fab work. Fubar = "F@@(ed up beyond all recognition" for the unvetted.
I sincerely urge you to take a look into counter-lever suspension for front end. As in Ural side-car, and speedway bikes. That way you can put the front tyre where ever you want, and still have optimal suspension geometry, and sharp handling. That rear end could also use some single coil-over action. With single coil swing arm it's the easiest to fit rear mud guard hugging the tyre. If you leave it solid, you'll slip a disc within the first season.
It's a good job you've taken on the bike project. Anybody else could've bought a death trap. Good to see the Mongrel getting some love. If you are redoing the wishbone is worth doing in aluminium. The ones you've done are as you said, over engineered, but look really heavy. Good to see you've still got the bug and enthusiastic about your projects. 👍
OMG I thought the rear brake set up was bad. Those front calipers are lethal!! And the forks.... the least said the better. I hope this didnt have an MOT when you bought it. It can only get better now. Looking forward to seeing what come next.
You are definitely talented enough to scrap that front end and make your own springer front end on the plasma table. That would be sick and look great with the rest of the bike!
The rear mudguard is an indespension twin wheel trailer unit that has been cut down, gs550 carbs space up the same as cb550 are easier to set up for k&n style filters and the linkage between the individual carbs is far more robust meaning they are less likely to go out of balance.
The offset on the top and bottom yokes is helpful, it decreases the trail making the steering lighter. Orange county chopper style front ends for harleys use the same idea and cost a fookin fortune.
Matt modern bike design has recognised the headstock and how to project stiffness both behind and forward and if you are going to build your own frame you have a clean sheet of paper, well a new AutoCad file.
do know if you know but destiny cycles done a style of frame like your thinking of see it up close amazing engineering going back a few years now but might worth a look think it was inspired after manhattan bridge if i remember correctly keep up the good work
Yeah raked trees help with trail but the last bike i built in the UK was a smidge on the illegal side for tube length and geometry, same here in Manitoba but guys just go an hour west n reg it in Saskatchewan and stretch out the front. Look up CYCLE BOYZ to see some of their crazy bikes, i've sold em 2 bikes so far.
Good luck with the bike Matt, and a nice change from car stuff.....I had a CB550K3 many years ago, and when taking the engine out discovered that I too should have drained the oil and removed the oil filter cover!....😉
Matt, Bearing in mind the faults (and quality of work) you have found on the rest of the bike, are you sure that the frame is a good basis to build a jig on for the new one?
Just found your channel you do some cool stuff that front end and the wheels are out of an ajs eos they are pre raked from the factory they’re a cool piece unfortunately not great quality although I have made a few replicas out of higher grade materials and they work very well how to see more of this it looks great so far
Extreme fork rake puts excessive load on the headtube and side load on the stantions, past the angle where the fork can compress,I'm guessing front wheel braking will be the only time the fork articulates like a pogostick !
That frame is fugly Good job ur making ur own bud Need to get rid of the rake to mate Sure its gonna be awesome Looking forward to this project too Nice work as always
Hi Matt, great to see you starting on the bike project, excited to see how this turns out! For MX5 driveline and assembly take a look at the Car Passion Channel, Greg has loads of experience and knowledge with all things MX5. Keep up the excellent work on ghis channel. 👌👏
What is holding the pads into those calipers? Normally the inner pad sits over the inboard ends of the slider pins & the outboard pad (with the pistons directly acting on the backplate) is held captive within the slider bracket which is integral with the slider pins & caliper mount. That looks scary!
G'day from West Australia, Matt🙂 Thanks for sharing😉👍👍 Needed a Urchfab infusion , for motivation😉🙂👍👍 Glad you can get a lend of ,or pay for a booth for a short time to get the mongrel done . Getting exciting for you I imagine buddy. Have an Awesome week😉🙂👍👍
Looking forward to seeing how you design the frame for this. Will you do it in aluminium or steel? BTW, it seems like you haven't updated your Patreon page or donor list in a while. I've been donating for a bit now and haven't seen my name come up yet. I'm even rocking an awesome Urchfab t-shirt.
The only things I know about bikes are that they have two wheels, and I don't like riding them! :-O But the amount of 'play' in some of those bits! Wow! A soon as you showed those calipers, I knew you could very soon design and build something far superior. The same with the frame too. An adjustable jig for building frames is easily within your grasp! :-)
Awesome Matt but think you could make new front folk holder and brake mount 's , out of aluminum? You got the tools to do this and skills, I know it takes time as well 👍🏾👍🏾👊
Hi Matt, are you going to build a tube frame or a flat stock frame like Jonathan W's scratch built Chopper Bobber. If you check out his channel and search for Chopper Bobber there are about 20 vids where he builds a bike from scratch, including casting his own engine, building frame, forks, tank etc from flat stock.
Do not use those fork yokes . Those extra rake chopper yokes remove all the trail because your steering stem and fork s are no longer parallel . Had a friend who tried a set and the bike became seriously unstable . After going back to the standard yokes and cutting and taking the steering head it was fine .
A shame about the wishbones. you put a lot of effort into making them. I enjoyed watching that part of the build. But, I'll get to watch you sort the problem and I'll enjoy that. ☺
What are you going to be doing with all of the old parts you're not going to be using, i'v a project of my own and i'm looking for a tank just like that!
Not really a motorbike enthusiast but the fabrication process will be interesting . I get the sports bike look but not the American chopper not ideal for our heavily congested roads and half asleep road users .
Is the dangerous bike builder still alive? This is the difference between someone who does not know what he is doing, and soon the end result when Matt is done with it.
Hey Matt, nice to see you building another bike, however i would scrap the forks and wheels cos they are off a crappy Chinese 125 custom and won't be up to handling the weight of the Honda motor, the brakes similarly are sh*te even the original single-piston Honda brakes would be better. The mismatch with the steering bearings would lead me believe that the bearings were for the Honda yokes which would have been beefier with a tapered stem for the larger bottom bearing... Hope this helps, looking forward to seeing the plasma cut frame! Regards, Andy
They look like generic Chinese 125 cruiser fork legs, off a Huoniao or a Lexmoto or something. Also brake caliper in front of the forks just seems wrong
Another very interesting video Matt, we are just so fortunate being able to follow what ever you do - learning all the time!!
550 Honda. Scrambler. A nobby tired Scrambler yeah!
Good tear down on the bike Matt, will be interesting to see the frame jig. Looking forward to the next update on the 100e
👍👍
Glad you're getting rid of that frame Matt. From what I can see, it's a death trap. In fact the whole bike is a death trap
I second this comment
👍👍👍😜🏴🦄🎣😁✌️

Interesting as usual, glad you took that POS off the road, thanks Matt.
Rake and trail..the most important thing for building bikes 👍
It's a good job you've taken on the bike project. Anybody else could've bought a death trap.

As you’re doing a beam/girder section frame, why not bin the nasty long tube forks for a girder type front end? Just a thought 👍🏼
Dude! YOU HAVE TO BUILD AN URCHFAB FRONT END!! That’s why we are here...
Love the fully sick bass beats at the very end
You are definitely talented enough to scrap that front end and make your own springer front end on the plasma table. That would be sick and look great with the rest of the bike!
Please do this!!

New thing! Audi take note.
Fully floating calipers. Lol
😂😂
That was basically landfill. Will be cool to see what you can make from any non terminal parts. Thats a great classic looking engine.
The offset on the top and bottom yokes is helpful, it decreases the trail making the steering lighter. Orange county chopper style front ends for harleys use the same idea and cost a fookin fortune.
550's my favorite bike! put a shorter front end on it make it more of a drag style bobber.
Matt modern bike design has recognised the headstock and how to project stiffness both behind and forward and if you are going to build your own frame you have a clean sheet of paper, well a new AutoCad file.
I'm not a motorcycle guy, but looks like an interesting build. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.
Upside down forks look great you can get extensions to make them longer and keep the rake if you like that look
do know if you know but destiny cycles done a style of frame like your thinking of see it up close amazing engineering going back a few years now but might worth a look think it was inspired after manhattan bridge if i remember correctly keep up the good work

Mad max 1 movie had a chopper with bubble domed sidecar and a CB four.
Very angular and matches you ideas of laser cutting the entire frame.
Good luck with the bike Matt, and a nice change from car stuff.....I had a CB550K3 many years ago, and when taking the engine out discovered that I too should have drained the oil and removed the oil filter cover!....😉
Workshop is looking good!

Another brilliant video keep it up brother.

Nice video. Cool project. Switching to a bike adds variety. Mahalo for sharing! : )
Extreme fork rake puts excessive load on the headtube and side load on the stantions, past the angle where the fork can compress,I'm guessing front wheel braking will be the only time the fork articulates like a pogostick !
That frame is fugly

used to have 550 super sport end of the 70s. wasa cracking bike
Mais um inscrito. From Brazil.nice good
Increade of fork rake reduce trail.
Slack head angle increase trail while steep angle do it in reverse.
wow, lots to come

I've got a pair of Yamaha Blue spot calipers that could be donated to the build if it'll help?
Looking forward to seeing how you design the frame for this. Will you do it in aluminium or steel?
BTW, it seems like you haven't updated your Patreon page or donor list in a while. I've been donating for a bit now and haven't seen my name come up yet. I'm even rocking an awesome Urchfab t-shirt.
I would say steel. Matt mentioned he would cut it out using the plasma table unless it can do ally?
@@lloydy___8720 plasma can cut aluminium
Sorry mate, I usually add them when new people sign up but must have missed this. Will sort it out. Going to use steel. Cheers, Matt

Ask what people like I realy enjoy watching you but watching you’re working but not in fast forward
Great catchup Matty. It's going to be a cool bike. Great to be able to get back onto the Mongrel too. Billy J.... Down Under here in OZ.

There was a motorcycle frame jig on fb market place last week. That would save you a whole heap of time mate
Dude, nearly at 60k subs 👌
Can't wait to see what you come up with 👍😎
Disappointing about the rear lower control arms. The bike will be an interesting build. Going well with how it's progressing.
Looking good Matt 😎
That bike is what is more commonly known, as a death trap.
I have been building bikes for fifty years. I have one or two ideas. I would like to share. Is there a way to contact you? So I could send pictures?
A shame about the wishbones. you put a lot of effort into making them. I enjoyed watching that part of the build. But, I'll get to watch you sort the problem and I'll enjoy that. ☺
Hi Matt. Great tear down on that Honda 🤣 You’ll make a fantastic safe chopper 👍🏻 Looking forward to seeing this one 😆 Stevie
Well done.
gonna be a great build
Don't mind mate, we all have flange trouble now and then :)
Do you collapse in a heap at the end of the day?
What are you going to be doing with all of the old parts you're not going to be using, i'v a project of my own and i'm looking for a tank just like that!
You’re good a what you do don’t fast forward over it

👍👍👍😜🏴🦄🎣😁✌️

I cant wait for the nsxt one !! Sooòoooo much going on and freekin interesting !!
Thats a big engine for just 550cc.That bike was a very poor build!Looking forward to your build!
From what I can see, you have a pair of useful wheels, there...!
Put a Springer front end on it
Hey Matt, nice to see you building another bike, however i would scrap the forks and wheels cos they are off a crappy Chinese 125 custom and won't be up to handling the weight of the Honda motor, the brakes similarly are sh*te even the original single-piston Honda brakes would be better. Andrew Riley They are Honda Comstar wheels.
@@jamesweber4938 I agree
Check out TigJunkie on instagram, he’s building his own chopper bike, maybe get some ideas from him!
Why not a nice set of plasma cut girder forks...get really creative.. Grat way to get the engine out as well.
Nice
An idea to base your frame jig on www.tcbroschoppers.com/chop-source-standard-diy-frame-jig-kit.html
Hub centre steer.
Glad I don't park my bike outside your house!!! Blink and it's in pieces!!!!
At least he won't be shouting and screaming at someone like county choppers.
They look like generic Chinese 125 cruiser fork legs, off a Huoniao or a Lexmoto or something. Also brake caliper in front of the forks just seems wrong
Please, please don't build another chopper or bobber!
Death trap, was someone actually planning to ride that?
WE WANT TO SEE THE MONGREL....
11:06 and 11:33 🐑😂
Bit of slop in that front end,,,😏,,,
Moor fast forward crap
