      the cylinder heads are not designed to flex, an air cooled engine is designed to release heat. please rethink tying the top of the engine to the frame. Even water cooled are mounted and stressed from the crank casings.

    Something I like about you Matt, you keep it real, warts and all. If you make a cockup, you show it and show the workaround of how you fixed it. Not some hero creator (and there are a few) that never make a mistake, everything is perfect first time, every time. We learn more this way 👍

    Just an observation, ridged frames do need to flex a bit for 'comfort' over potholes and if there is no flex the frame may crack at the weakest point!. Also bolting the top of the engine directly to the frame is likely to add considerable vibrations when riding.

      @@deadslow201 One should definitely stick with mounts designed to be stressed.
      The lack of rear suspesion might be OK with just super fat rear tyre if it has enough plushiness. Dunno if such fit tough. But as hardtail show bike it it's rather interesting. I don't think it will be a daily driver for anyone :).

    Nice job as always..... Just a thought re the chain run... Its pretty long.... You might want to consider a sprung or hydraulic freewheeling tensioner, either sprocket or roller wheel, to make for a better riding bike. Will take the slap out of a long chain and make for smoother gearchanges......
    Enjoying the build....

    Awesome build so far, very unique! When you were speaking about the flexing due to the strength of the steel in either direction, another thing to consider is the torsional strength/stiffness which tubes have a lot of, you can imagine fixing one end of a tube and trying to twist the other vs a peice of flat bar.

    Get hold of the front wheel and push and pull it in line with the frame, the first time you bump up against something the entire front end is going to fold into the front of the engine. Where you showed it flexing by levering from side to side has no rigidity longitudinally either.

Perhaps the tiny tabs on the frame, where the plates bolt to the top of the engine - instrad of a nut & bolt, tap the tiny tabs (maybe M8?) then the bolts can be flush, and it all looks way cleaner. Just a suggestion. Looking good mate. Cheers from Sydney, Australia.

    Coming on a treat Matt. Minor set back with the engine casing, I reckon you got off lightly!
    Good shout using the engine to add bracing. I reckon the top of the frame at the headstock will need more strength, 1mm of movement here equals 10 of 20mm at the tyre. That'll make it feel well vague with less sense of direction than a tory politician. A lot of old bikes used the tank to provide additional stiffness, I don't know what you plan its with the tank but I'd make it strong and fix it to the frame in a few places. I think the frame looks great, it'd be a shame to add loads of bracing to it.

  • @andrewellis5870
    @andrewellis5870 4 года назад

    Be mindful how high you set the exhaust pipes, remember you gotta fit foot pegs, a brake pedal and a gear change in the area where you showed them running back through the bike. Plus you don't want the exhaust blowing onto ur feet.

  • @SB-vb8ch
    @SB-vb8ch 4 года назад

    The width of the frame is the issue, it's a shallow beam as you say. You can add width with some profiles between the headstock & the rear of the cradle. You will definitely see that load case whilst riding, imagine being banked over whilst cornering, the mass off the engine is pushing against the suspension but any bumps/road irregularities will move the wheels off line which will then try to move the rest of the bike which will resist due to the inertia from it's own mass (engine being the main component of this alog with the rider of course). It will be exacerbated by the long forks & big front wheel as the resultant forces have a large moment over the headstock (lots of leverage). I would guess that it will slap like a good 'un! That's quite a chain span, maybe worth a couple of jockeys/guides to stop it slapping as you don't want to be running it as tight as you did during the mock up - it'll kill the output shaft bearing.

    To take out the flex you could replicate the hole cut bracing but have extra metal wrapped around the head tube,a bit like folded butterfly wings so your I beam construction effectively becomes a pierced box with a spine down the middle but still has the Same appearance? After writing this I should have said wrap a plate round head tube past flex point lol
