A sincere moment of transparency here. After working for a well known company for 7 years I quit because I felt I was too stressed to keep going. I ended up living off of my 401k for several months then ran into an old friend that encouraged me to get a new job. The only place that would interview me was 45 mins away from my hometown. I took the interview landed the job and began commuting 45mins to and from work for 1 year. Then my immediate family left the state leaving me to find a new home closer to my job. Everything started coming together. At first it wasn’t easy. I had an insane car payment and car insurance rate on top of other bills to pay and being on my own again became too much to bear. My car eventually got repossessed leaving me at the mercy of God and fellow coworkers to get me to and from work. Life was hard every direction but God taught me sooo much about myself and people and life itself that’s why I still hold on. I still don’t have a car but I know someday soon God is going to bless me and I’ll be prepared to take much better care of myself and my material possessions😌 God bless everyone.

Oh wow I had a similar experience. Left my job after 8 1/2 years. Lived off of my 401k also and was down to my last $40.00 in my account with my car being only $1,200.00 away from being paid off a job finally came through after trying for about a year. Though it's a temporary job I can pay off my debts and move forward.🙌🏾🙏🏾I 🙏🏾 that things change for you for the better. 🙏🏾

The part that starts around the 15:20 mark is so important. Where he is describing how being homeless in a way gives you more freedom because people who are not homeless have this immense pressure day in and day out to pay their bills, go to work, deal with tons of obligations plus the grind trying to "reach the top" etc. That is so true and I've heard it from so many people. 90% of "normal" people live under constant pressure, stress and their life is full of worry and never truly peaceful. In a way, less is more, as the more you have (multiple mortgages, cars, insurance, business, investments etc.), the more stressed out, more tied down and less free you are.

I totally resonate. What is said about boarding school is very true, especially when you start at a young age. I started at 9. You are changing rooms and roommates every 4 months. You used to have to wait for parents to call you or visit you - you have no freedom to reach your loved ones when you want or need. There is bullying from other pupils and staff. It’s crowd control, a very dehumanizing model even if it’s supposedly progressive. It creates a survival mode mentality and mo at a very young age that continues its effect well into adulthood. It is better than living on the streets no question but is a deeply traumatizing paradigm for most. Im so happy to hear of this man’s good fortune and well being. Thank you and best wishes to the guest.

What a wonderful story, so inspiring. A lesson in gratitude and paying it forwards. Homelessness is becoming a huge problem in Australia because of inflation and literally not enough houses. There are many homeless people who are fully employed here. I can appreciate what he said about becoming homeless, because I very nearly was myself. I had cancer treatment and could not work for more than a year, I only kept my house because my student son worked at Hungry Jacks (Burger King) to pay the bills. Government assistance didn't even cover the mortgage repayments. (Rent costs about the same as my mortgage). I am forever grateful for being alive and for free medical treatment, and being able to keep my house. Thank you Timothy 💖 from Australia xx

When many think of the homeless, they Conjure the image of Those on the corner Solicitingcash.. not true especially in New York. I know someone working for the post office living in a shelter. And there are many other working adults there working as well many with kids. It's sad. Glad he persevered

Timmothy this is my favorite video interview that you have done. Thank you very much for this.
As a youth, Jerry Winkler went through his own personal Hell to gain the profound wisdom he has gained. His world perspective comes from two very different realities. It sounds like he is still gaining the most common perspective of the rest of us. That is to work and build, like his father did and like many of us do. However, he is doing this starting from a higher level than most of us started from. It is wonderful to see his personal demeanor that is so calm and at piece and at the same time, caring about those around him.
It is fascinating that he isn't necessarily rich like I expected he was before watching this video, but he has a wealth of knowledge from a perspective that I've never had. I really don't know if the world values his wisdom like I do. However, I would think the world sadly values it for (at least) entertainment purposes.
I would love to ask him about his experience with Sudden-Wealth-Syndrome. Going from where he was to where he is. I would have liked to have heard more about his current life also. Such as what kinds of decisions he makes in his current life that he didn't have to think about in the hellish life of his youth. Thanks, Jerry, for your time here.
    Question: Does money bring happiness?
Jerry's answer: Of course. 😂 But remember his perspective of coming from simply having nothing at all and then finding himself where he was suddenly placed in society.
My answer: Money (and more so resources) may not be the most important thing in the world, but it affects everything that is important. It affects your lifestyle. It affects your healthcare. It affects your education. It affects everything on a day-to-day basis. It affects how you relate to everyone including God. It affects every single one of your personal and professional relationships. It affects the food that you eat. It affects the health of your membership clubs or your church congregation and the number of missions it can support. It affects your ups, and it affects your downs. It affects your everything.
So, regarding the question, how would you answer it? I would say that the number of resources and amount of money we have access to, affects (or magnifies) your happiness in so far as your character supports such a magnification.

Such a great interview. So many good points. When I was younger I just needed help in winter with heating oil. I made to much according to state for help. I just needed enough oil to heat the apartment so the pipes didn't freeze. I would have payed it back after winter. I managed to keep the pipes from freezing but it was freezing in there. I was just lucky enough to have a roof over my head. It's the little things. Like the washing machine, it breaks you need to find another and even if you find a used one cheap enough you need to have a way to get it where you need it. Sometimes people just need a little help before it snowballs!

13:10 As I'm listening to him, I'm thinking God decided to take him on that journey, so that he could appreciate the wealth that he would eventually inherit.
He needed those experiences to mold him into the person he became before the wealth.
Living life as an impoverished person will HUMBLE you and force you to view life through a wider lens.
I vaguely remember seeing something about this story years ago.
But I'm wondering did the daughter of the wife turn-out to be biological, as well or was he the sole heir?

At the age of near retirement my huge travel company overnight went into liquidation. 22,000 people lost their jobs.. pilots, aircrew, overseas workers. Lost homes. Getting a second job a place to live, then comes Covid and Brexit!! Being homeless at a late stage in life was awful. No real family or support. Affected my mental health mental and physical health. Eventually found a place to live and start again. But what a hell. I totally understand everything he is saying. I was a professional all my life. I’ve also worked with homeless people and it isn’t a choice for many, and today with cost of living crisis and circumstances it’s getting worse. Yeah his story WOULD make a great Hollywood movie. I'd go watch it.
On a different note, I think in the 21st century we have gotten really careless as a society throwing around the word "homeless" and having it cover all people who are experiencing very different conditions. Unfortunately, in the USA most of the people who are homeless for a while are addicts or alcoholics, many coming from abusive situations and broken homes. The "normal" people who become homeless because of job loss and housing loss usually don't stay homeless for long. At least, they don't die out on the streets as most of the drug addicts and alcoholics do.

What happened to his fathers fortune??
I’ve been homeless. It makes you stronger. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and you do appreciate things so much more. I like watching your videos man, but I didn’t think you where researched and ready for this interview. “What should we do to for homeless people? Uh Help them? Man, you could have asked so much more. Why didn’t his mother have financial support for him or tell him, rather than leaving him to his fate with someone she knows doesn’t love him like a son, because he wasn’t, and was abandoned.
Where is the justice in all this? What happened to his fathers fortune.Who stole so much. How did they get away with it. He could have used that money to help homeless people! What happened to the step sister that was co claiming. I will definitely check this guy out and try and find out more about this fascinating story. Oh so much more. I will have to check the news story’s, as the book wasn’t written by him. I will read it though, as it may shed some light on what happened. Thank you though for your podcast. I do subscribe and watch all your shows. Your a good man and I hope you don’t take this criticism personally or too offended. Maybe you just where having a bad day. You are normally a much more confident interviewer, asking questions that aren’t so “ Wow sounds like a movie, what’s it like not to be homeless anymore? Uh it’s shit man…
Do you have a researcher to prepare for an interview or do you do it all yourself? He sounds like a very positive man and I so left wanting to know more about him. He talked a lot about his past but not what happened after he found out about his real dad and the sharks that had his money, but hey, I guess he obviously didn’t want to say too much, so I’ll give you that.
Lots of love brother. Fascinating story to check out… I do love your shows, so keep up the good work. Peace.

Clearly, there was a language barrier. Sounds like the Dutch law only gives you a certain time to make a claim on an estate and that window had passed for Jerry. The newspaper article pressured the trust to give him a fraction of his Dad's estate and he was able to pay for the basics to start his life over. It doesn't sound like his Mom had time to tell him the truth and instead sent him to live with the only man he knew to be his Dad. Or maybe she wasn't sure herself. He was also able to carve a career out of it as a motivational speaker.

    Hi, Tim what a interview!
I have a question for Jerry if can answer it here.
When Jerry meets homeless people on the streets and they ask for money does he give it to them?
How do you know if the person really needs the money for food and it is not to buy drugs or alcohol?
There’s a campaign in my town where they tell the residents not to give money to street people because most of it is a scam.

Very great podcast. Everything or most things in life is just personal perspective and how someone has grown/evolved to understand life or things in general. There's a great saying out there that Money Is Just a tool and is how you use it. African people say a machete is just a tool, you can use it to cut trees, wood, branches or you can use it to commit a crime which can destroy your life

Most children of billionaires are overly privileged spoiled rotten-azz brads...
It is a blessing for this man to grow up the way he did, and I'm very happy that he found he's true father and inheritance, even though 99% was stolen from him... !
    Stay Blessed Jerry !🙏😊

if you compare -the population of people in need ( homeless ) against the number of jobs available you will see that it is impossible for everyone to have a job..then -there is competition among many people for one job.Homelessness is then inevitable..

So basically, the foundation soon as his dad died, nabbed up most of that money and basically you know he had to like hush up and they gave him just enough to you know survive , but not near as much as what he was supposed to get. 😮😢 The news reporter hype up his story, and he was able to gain fame and fortune off that as well.
