Julie Hardy is a technology and gaming expert based in London, UK and hosts a new radio show on video game culture on BBC Radio 1. Specializing in technology, video games, RUclips and pretty much anything to do with the online self, Julia’s work has been featured by BBC TV, Bravo and BAFTA.
Julia takes a passionate stance on online issues and created a blog called “Misogyny Monday” as a platform to raise awareness of the abuse that many women encounter online.

There have been many times throughout my life when I've seen guys, sometimes friends or colleagues of mine say or do things that are straight up shameful and at best, distasteful and at their worst, disgusting.
And in those very moments, I've called guys on it and pointed out the damage they are doing, not only (potentially to that woman), but also, potentially for any other men she meets, including us (the guys in that moment).
Then there's the other side of the coin that I like to bring to people's attention: What if that woman who you're harassing or bitterly insulting in a comment was your mother, daughter, sister, friend, partner? And it was another man doing the misogyny?
Those guys would be the first to react passionately and aggressively in defence of their loved ones. So why inflict such disgusting behaviour on the loved ones of others?

Consider, though, that this stand-uppishness is stereotypically patriarchal. Feminists don't take kindly to patriarchy, you know, and they're not nearly done destroying it. Paradoxically enough, they are also very, _very_ keen on exploiting the patriarchal values they pose to dismantle, in order to keep policing others' behaviors. - As is abundantly clear in this video. - Either way, I would watch my back, if I were you.
Let's take another step back.
What if the disgusting behavior you refer to doesn't stem from misogyny. Think about it; if misogyny were an element, it would probably be the rarest one in the known universe. So maybe these guys react to the despicable behavior of the woman involved. Maybe the despicable behaviors of _other_ women have already done their damage in these men.
THAT, dear friend, is the other side of the coin.
Since you gave no specifics,, there's no way of knowing. By the same token, we may assume that this is the case just as well as you did in standing up for these women - or against these men, I can't really tell.

Every time one of these videos comes up the comments are full of rants about how the person speaking isn't representing everyone in their speech. Do we really have to state every little thing? Is it not possible to talk about sexism against women without having to talk about sexism against men? Is it not possible to talk about racism against black people without talking about racism against white people?
At no point in this video did she say that sexism against men didn't exist, or wasn't a problem. If she had done then I'd understand many of the comments.

That's the problem. No one talks about mens issues. It's all about women's issues and men are getting sick of it. Both men and women face problems in our society, but womens problems receive much more attention and focus then mens problems.

Two things you slowly realize on the internet; One, regardless of how you articulate yourself, people will always see what they want to see in what you are trying to say. Second, people often don't care to constructively fix the things they see wrong, but prefer to discredit the person and the argument to avoid seeing an individual as a person not too different from themselves.
Regardless of the issue, most people seem more concerned with asserting their rightness on the internet rather than getting to the bottom of what the cause is. Then you watch both sides dig in their heels because the discussion turns into an ego battle rather than a constructive dialogue. Life is rough as it is, don't hate the player hate the game. Feminist or otherwise, people are just trying to hold on the best they can. .
That being said, interesting points were made, there was some logic made that raises red flags, but I at least admire that she is trying to constructively deal with the harassment she receives on a daily basis. It seems a far better alternative than the verbal assaults in this comment section.

What I find fascinating is that there is a need for somebody to point out exactly how “sexism affects us all.” Meaning that there are people out there that constantly hear about the things that so many people go through while facing sexism, yet they don’t feel the need to do anything about it because it “doesn’t affect them”

After having a discussion about sexism and rape culture with a guy who didn´t even realize that blaming the victim is really sexist. And that therefore, sexism exists. And thats just one point, one occasion:
I personally am confronted with male people on a daily basis (who I like and who like me= no hate), that sport majorly sexist views without realizing it and probably thinking these views don´t cause harm. But they do.
I feel like men need to step down from being offended and try to walk in womens shoes for a moment. It isn´t that women like Julia Hardy, who made it abundantly clear she isn´t talking about ALL MEN, dislike or hate men. Neither do I but I expect from fellow human beings to not insult or degrade me based on my gender (as I don´t wish men to be). Even if done without bad intention. How is that expectation hateful? Just be a considerate human being! Isn´t that supposed to be normal?
Online sexism is escalating in the worst ways and it spills out into the real world. Please just respect people and stop treating others as inferiors, goddammit.

I'd love for my kids to know my older brother more, but I really cannot stand him being around my adult daughter.
I love my relatives, but some of them have struggled with inappropriate incestual feelings, and some of them are sexist and low-class. I limit my time with those individuals, and always have my dad or someone with me. That way, I get to see those relatives still, but I'm safe.

Harry Seldon - More than half? What like 55 percent? That still means 45 percent of them are male and it still means men cyberbully women a lot. You don't see women cyberbullying men and calling them derogatory terms do you? So just because women do it more to each other, makes it less bad when men do it? If women don't do it to men, men shouldn't do it to women either. Thats like saying men are the primary victim of violence. Yeah by OTHER men. So it makes male violence against women less bad? But you rarely see a woman hurt or kill a man. These type of comparisons are made to downplay attacks on women by men. Only use woman-on-man attacks to compare with man-on-woman attacks. Don't use woman-on-woman or man-on-man. Use a reciprocal comparison or don't use any at all.

No one hates men as a whole, no one hates women as a whole. Oppression on both sides exists, except that women tend to see the shorter straw of that oppression. Do not forget that there are countries where a woman is just a piece of property belonging to a man, with no access to education, childbirth at teen ages, and faces a genuine barrier in perusing a career. Those of you who swat away feminist claiming "oh first world problems" that's because that's what YOURE exposed to. While the remaining women of the world still faces issues that are simply cruel. Maybe some of those first world feminist have spoken so much about equality that you have become so utterly desensitized, but that's also what they're exposed to. There is utter injustice in this world towards the female race, and being an ignorant internet troll doesn't help the situation. These talks are not only listened to by "first worlders" they may hopefully effect someone's thinking in an oppressed society. we all have a story that we tell ourselves about how the world works and why we are faced with problems. that story is always only a partial truth, no matter how much we would like to believe otherwise. it isn't particularly surprising that many of us have a different story and we are afraid to listen to each other because we are so attached to our own story. i know that the youtube comments section is not where anyone goes to have a good discussion but i hope that if you will read this you will not begin arguing out of fear (also sometimes manifested as anger) and instead that you will be courageous enough to imagine why someone might disagree with you. there is more than one way to look at the world and you could learn something from walking in someone elses shoes for a change.

I've followed Julia for quite some time, and I know where she is coming from, so when I heard that she did a TED Talk on sexism, I was intrigued, as she never mentioned it in her usual tweets and all. And also many talks of sexism I had heard, I wasn't all that satisfied with their conclusions.
I can't say her method is the best (the comedy thing), but her idea of understanding where that commentator is coming from makes sense. It could be the sub-conscious thing she talked about, or probably he/she(no exceptions) must had quite a bad day, or probably watched a movie with lots of swearing. Who knows.
I think, it could be combination of when to remain silent and when to speak.

You claim that a woman with a show called "Misogyny Monday" never mentioned sexism "her usual tweets and all"? You are either not very bright or just disingenuous.
Overall very good, especially the part about women being told they are sensitive, and their reaction to it. Couple of things I wish I had heard her at least mention: sexism to women from women, and sexism from men and women towards men. It is internalised in all genders, it goes both ways, and I feel like that should be mentioned, and not overlooked so blatantly.

Being silent is a powerful superhero power which not many humans can master. You can use silence as a powerful tool. To assert power, let people reflect over a sentence/action, you can be mystic and interesting, and its a strong way to show that you dont acknowledge bad behavior. Silence lets people think. And it might be a bit to little thinking now a days. But its still important to speak up when people are harassing you or bullying. Call the cops, dont speak with the vile people. Silence is powerful.
You are an amazing speaker. You're funny and engaging. I really enjoyed this talk and I know exactly what you mean. The one thing I noticed which you left out about sexism affecting men too is the fact that society puts men into boxes. Granted the world is a man's world and it is worse for women on the whole but there are several things that happen to men too. Men are seen as weak when they cry or express their feelings, men are seen as feminine when they watch movies like The Notebook, men can't wear high heels or dresses (although frankly why they'd want to I have no idea, I hate high heels and dresses but that's just my opinion). An equal society would be if men and women had exactly the same opportunities and could wear the same clothes and they could both lead in dance and they both could pay on the first date and they could both cry over The Fault in our Stars and there was no domestic violence of any kind from either gender and they could both be stay at home parents and nannies and nurses, I could go on, and all of this was done without the batting of an eye or any rude comment. Anyway you're awesome. Thank you for being inspiring.

What a respectable woman Julia is. I totally agree though, I can see why having men sexualise you and treating you as a slab of meat can annoy women. It's degrading and disgusting that some boys think this will sit well with women when it is flat out disrespectful. Eloquently put. Thank you so much for sharing this Ted talk. I am 60 years old and have endured unbelievable treatment from male strangers throughout my life. Too intrusive to elaborate on here. It damages, to be treated as an object. To the point where I now feel sick to my stomach when even walking past a man on the street.
Women are evolving to stop pretending it isn't happening. This work is important for a healthy society.
This is off topic, but I really like her hair. I loved the talk, but I also love her hair almost as much. They’re such goals
I think her basic points are:
1. it is unacceptable making comments such as: nice t**s on that
2. that men who make that kind of comments are in minority
3. but that because they approach women, women gets suspicious of every man approaching them
4. and that is infuriating that when you are upset somebody says you are overreacting
And I don't really see how anyone can disagree with them, 1., 2. and 4. are just common sense.
Personally, I wouldn't like to be called that, am suspicious of men especially at night because of really bad previous experience, and don't like when somebody tells me how should I feel about something.

It's a shame she did not elaborate more on the effect idiots have on gender relations.
I've heard so many horror stories from female friends, witnessed quite a few incidents myself and most times stepped in when no one else did - although people usually do tend to intervene, so that's reassuring.
And it's not about protecting a "hypocritical" woman, as some have said here, but helping someone when it is necessary.
Man or woman is irrelevent.
The only difference being that, statistically, women are being harrassed more often than men, on a daily basis.

Valid criticism does not necessarily equte with triggering. This is the internet, a free for all platform including elements, people and manners that you don't like. It was extremely subtle, but she actually argued that people who don't think they were sexist are. She might have said "not all men", but she stressed that sexism isn't an act, but an unconscious bias. That type of message implies that you don't have to do anything sexist to be a sexist.
If she wanted to stop sexism, she should have presented some clear rules about what qualifies as sexist behavior. Without clear rules, her argument(towards the end) amounted to "sexism is defined by the experiences of females", if a woman says something is sexist, it is.

If she had aligned herself with feminism, she could have shown the broad spectrum of types of feminists that are out there. Lisa Hernandez The comment section below is the reason why, even though it didn't help much. People are more likely to listen if they don't think they're being personally targeted. People still need to reflect on their own actions, conscious or not, but one step at a time. Plus a lot of men are like "I'm not like that at all" when it doesn't matter if you are or aren't. Past interactions have taught extreme caution and this was partly to explain that caution.

Amazing! But it saddens me that a lot of these talks aren't so well put forward, men such as my self feel that some of these talks are just giving men a bad name so I'm glad to hear this one is different with it not just aiming to upset men. I do think men get harsher punishments and can be wrongly prosecuted quite easy when it come to sex however men should know now that they need to be careful and they should do it at the right moment not when they are both drunk but I do agree with everything you said, keep getting your points across Julia!

Depending on whether you're male or female, not being able to follow someone you work with and friends of one of your family members on social media is sexist. I don't find it awkward and embarrassing & following your sister's friends or your dad's friends on social media should be allowed.

starting from 9 minutes.Basically boils down to: You are sexist, because I say so.
It could perfectly be Jonathan was sexist without knowing it, or it could be you saw something as being sexist which wasn't sexist. It depends on the context. But saying you are unconsciously sexist is basically saying "you are sexist. Don't even think about contemplating on your actions, you can't know you are as you are not conscious about it and for some magical reason you can't evaluate your behavior based on unconscious decisions. You are sexist because I am telling you you are". It is an argument from a very authorative point of view. It is a logical fallacy.
I agreed with everything in this video except this pretty cringeworthy moment.
