QUESTION: I bought one of these phones (in Japan) yesterday, (12S Ultra) using MIUI 13.0.4 and the LEICA Branding Name is NOT on the outside of the phone. The Leica brand is only mentioned in the 2 Leica Settings in SOFTWARE only, but Am confused as to WHY the "LEICA" Name was Not put on the phone Exterior As Per EVERY OTHER VIDEO & PICTURE OF THIS Phone FOR MONTHS (My phone has the word "XIAOMI" printed instead there. ------ I'm just confused as to- ''Why' not' the word "LEICA"? ---------- Also; P.S. My Phone also has the small wording "1- INCH" printed at the camera lens system; opposite to where LEICA should be written. Did I buy some kind of Sample version?
Great Video and review! I have also got the Xiaomi 12S Ultra and the phone is very good, I was with mi 11 ultra so here is my opinion: + back design is leather like and much easier to grip without a case, also you feel less hit + phone is lighter + sd 8+gen 1 is better than 888 in everything, faster, more efficient, cooler, powerhouse + the screen now switches between high and low refresh rates and saving battery + I was using DC Dimming on 11 ultra, and it's gone from 12s ultra but no issues, I don't see any banding in real life and I have sensitive eyes + main camera is an improvement and photos are more detailed in my opinion + way faster shutter speed that makes taking photos very fun + the battery life is much much much better + the proximity sensor is now fixed and doesn't miss when using the earpiece + overall the phone fixes most of the problems that mi 11 ultra had - no 4k selfie camera (still good for video calling) - still usb 2.0 speed (although I use wifi to transfer files to pc so no issue for me) - the main bad point is the software, as of this typing I have installed the latest 13.0.5 software update, but it's still needing allot of work, there is the issue that was showed in the video, google pay doesn't work (maybe related to china firmware), and many china related bloatware that runs in the background), don't get me wrong the software feels pretty much optimized, but it also feels the phone "runs" allot of junk in the background that eats some of that power and battery, if the software was more polished I would enjoy the phone more. in short, the phone is good upgrade to mi 11 ultra, if you suffer on the mi 11 ultra - low battery life, bad proximity sensor (calls, voice messages etc), very hot device - this xiaomi 12s ultra fixes all that, but at the same time there are a few downgrades, as was shown in the video lower audio for videos, and many others like no rear selfie display, smaller battery capactiy, slower wireless charging smaller display. etc...

I got mine a week ago. The worst part is lots of popular apps like Google apps or Social media apps are giving weird bugs sometimes. Hoping software will be fixed in the next update. 🤞

Focus is one of the best feature of the 12s ultra, mine can focus on a single strain of hair almost everytime, it is noticbalely better than my iPhone 13 pro max in almost everyway, other than HDR. You may have a broken phone.
What an amazing review. I have seen an insane amount of reviews but none covers the points that you said on this video. As much as it hurts to say it, unfortunately this isn't the special phone i was hoping to be. Plus the China exclusiveness really kills it for me. I shall be taking a step back and waiting for a potential Honor/Samsung flagship this fall.
This and the 67W charging... My wife's Mi 10 Ultra has 120w and I really wanted an upgrade from my aging P30 Pro now.... which all of a sudden can't hold a battery charge after vacation. There seems to be no clear cut phone winner anymore like back when I got my P30 Pro... such a rock/paper/scissors game and I'm genuinely NOT excited to shop for a phone,,,

I have this phone and it has the most impressive camera I've ever seen on a smart phone. My previous phone was a S22 Ultra but seeing all the reviews for this one I had to jump ship. Never have I had a product where my hands-on experience impresses me more so than the reviews. I am in the States on AT&T. My current location doesn't get 5G so it's LTE for me which is still pretty fast but whenever I drive to a known 5g location again I'll confirm. I am aware that 2/4 of the supported 5g bands don't work on my network. There's that tradeoff of it being a china exclusive phone and not international. Given the choice again i'd still purchase it. Personally, I think this is the camera to beat on any smartphone.
GN1 is the sensor that is hitting the perfect spot of - 1. being a very large sensor[ 1/1.3 inch ] 2. companies working on it each year to optimize it more and more. As a matter of fact, except for few technical geeks or pro level photographers, no customer really cares about the sensor size. "Oh, a 1 inch sensor? Damn i'm getting this phone at any cost." I hope brand gets this as early as possible.
Sounds reasonable. Vivo is using that sensor already since the Vivo X50 Pro+. Now they are using a slightly altered version called GNV, which is still in its core the same sensor. And the Vivo X80 Pro is producing outstanding photos. Also, the more sensors are produced the more the production costs are reduced. The Sony IMX707--used in the Xiaomi 12 Pro, 12S and 12S Pro--also looks like an amazing sensor. Xiaomi could've used it in the Ultra model, and the saved costs they could've invested in a better front camera.
Probably the best in taking photos from the main camera, the zoom and ultra wide are great too, but video part still has some catching up to do with all the competitors

great review! the bitrate and front camera 1080p resolution are the most disappointing thing about xiaomi's flagships idk why they won't go for 4k. it sucks. i hope they fix it in the future smartphone releases.
I posted a few examples of this in the video. The focal point is very narrow on that main camera and at times when it shouldn't have focus issues it would. Be just slightly out of focus and soft. Very annoying.
One of the largest reviewers in China (小白) also highlighted the same focus issue illustrated here in this review so it's clearly an issue. Will be interesting to see if they manage improve it via software updates
Thank you so much for showing the size comparison between the 12S Ultra and the 7S Pro. I’m really on the fence between the 2. I love bigger screen phone’s, but I keep hearing that the 7S pro is not going to get very many software updates, where as with the 12S ultra I know will get at least three years with the potential of being able to root and load custom roms. Anyway, keep up the good work.
Good to know. A few outlets have said it’s not a big upgrade from 11 ultra in leica vivid. Leica authentic eats dynamic range. But some outlets just really love the 1inch. Seems like a missed opportunity.
I really dislike MIUI after owning multiple Xiaomi phones over years. No matter how good their hardware, the little things always nag at the user and make their phones feel a lot cheaper than they should be. Thanks for pointing these out in your reviews!
Not going to lie, I jumped to the camera part immediately. It seems the camera is a bit overhyped, particularly as there are other phones with relatively large sensors which aren't far behind in terms of image quality. The bitrate thing is annoying - I wonder if FilmicPro or something can record in higher bitrates, though historically Xioamis Camera2 support has been kinda lacking. Camera comparison coming soon I assume? 😄
Greatest still picture phone camera for your money. For video I still believe my Mi 10T does better than that though. Amazing pictures for a phone! Thank you for this video, most other people doing camera tests didn't know how to take pictures or video lol

There's a few channel who review the regular 12S, you can watch from Gizmochina or other channels, pretty good for compact phone & they also improve the main camera with new sensor, now same as Pro ver

Well I can tell you that the Zeiss T* coating on the X80 pro lenses is better than Leica's. Maybe I will do an X80 Pro Vs 12S Ultra Vs other comparison.
The reason for judder or better said sutter is high shutter speed. A phone can’t change aperture. After testing different settings, I came to conclusion, that judder free video is possible, when the shutter speed last as long as a frame. So 1/30 for 30fps. 1/60 for 60fps. Some say use the double shutter speed, but to me, that one can be choppy too. Some phones use sensors that can use iso lower than 100. Those can use lower shutter speeds and seem having less stutter. Xiaomi uses a sensor than has iso 100 as the lowest setting. Iphone can go lower.
Still no 4K selfie cam, video out, higher bit rate, proper MIUI optimitization and software upgrades, but they're going up in price. Xiaomi is just not what it used to be.

There must be an app you're installing that is causing that issue with the spiraling icon when going back to the home screen. I got a 12X and in that review you found that issue as well. After a month of use I have yet to see that bug once. And I'm pretty sure that 7% overnight battery lose is due to the damn Meta App Manager.
I am on the on verge of buying this thing (after watching many of your excellent comparisons with other phones). If you are only going to use it as a pocket camera (and you are located in the US), does it matter whether it's a Chinese or Global version or that it's EU ROM? (Sorry if these are dumb questions, but the answers have eluded me thus far...)
96kbps is ridiculous for a phone of this caliber! They REALLY should fix that. Other than that, I really feel the camera is not that good… as you said, there are other phones with similar quality but without the cons.
Great review as usual. Last year Mi 10s is still better in sound quality and camera. Mi10s has the best stereo audio. You Can make a comparison if possible.
Yeah, I used that phone for a while. It is still Xiaomi's best phone for audio to date, both for the speakers and recording sound. It's a pity that they can't give their top flagships audio quality like this. This phone is no longer officially sold by Xiaomi though. It's gone off the market so it can't be bought from official sources anymore. It also never launched outside China
Yeah my Mi 10 Pro had much better speakers than my 11 Ultra and 12S Ultra. It was quite noticable. I was also disappointed it went backwards despite the Harmon Kardon tuning on the 11 and 12. Thats why when i saw 13s dropped the Harmon Kardon tuning it didn't bother me. Although i haven't heard a 13 in person yet so not sure if its improved or not. Too many reviewers don't focus on sound comparisons.

500 usd phone trying to be an Iphone. Years passed after lots of models Xiaomi still haven't fixed the cons you mentioned. Everything you said as final words are true. As a Mi 9T user for 2.5 years my next phone definitely won't be a Xiaomi. For who thinks to buy Xiaomi let me tell you a thing nothing will be fixed with updates. If something is broken in initial firmware it will stay as it is.
yikes thats way lower than Redmi Note 11 Pro plus which uses 256kbps for video I believe. They have no excuse its holding back the phones potential. I noticed colour shifting with the selfie camera in the video. for me it seems the optical zoom 5x is the real show stealer really great quality. I dont know if its worth three times the cost when looking at the cameras compared to the redmi note 11 pro plus that i picked up. but those profiles, is that camera app specific to the phone or is it the standard miui camera apk? it needs a dedicated camera app not that miui camera app other handsets use.
Looks like another instalment of great hardware let down by sub optimal software configuration and optimisation. Let's see how long is it going to take them to improve things. Sometimes it feels like the China launch is for beta testing and after lessons are learned they give it go on global markets, time will tell
It does seem that way, look at the Xiaomi 12 Pro. I was a mess when I reviewed the import model, but the Global variant was so much better, better thermals and more refined.
That leather is horrible and we all know how leather ends up after a while. Other than that, wow. Finally a phone as good as the 11 ultra. People always look past xiaomi but they are without a doubt the best along with oppo when you look away from the usual brands. Why is 1080p video for selfy disappointing when it's rarely used by anyone? Not even needed. Selfy cam shouldn't be needed tbh but unfortunately we live in a world full of self obsessed people.

Can you do a lowlight night photography test? I'm curious how it holds up against other smart phone and if you can, compare it to a 1inch sensor camera like the Sony Rx100.
Pretty tough match for rx100. Even with 5 axis, very hard to match up to nightmode. Even if you can handhold for 1 or 2 seconds, the highlights will blow out.
That’s my guess. I’ve never owned a 1 inch sensor camera. I have a slightly bigger sensor camera, even with apsc, and similar f1.8, you do end up with quite high iso even at 1/10s or 1/20s at dark places. On a 1 inch I’m guessing the similar 800 iso or 1600 or 3200 iso will not be as clean as night mode, but sensors do improve over time, so more modern 1 inch might have cleaner high iso, maybe rx100 mark 4 but I doubt it, even the zv1 also about there. Might be able to handhold rx100 for 1 second that can drop to maybe iso 400 or 200 where it should be night mode clean.
Overhyped .... We gotta look at facts: - best display ? No - best design ? Maybe - best speakers ? No - best camera system ? No, isn't class leading so far. Zoom is even dissapointing, front camera is limited. - best price ? Certainly Not - best software ? No Xiaomi never does and their updates aren't always great. Look at the 11 ultra - availability ? No, never global versions of their best devices - best SOC ? So far in the Android space but others have it too. We now see nearly half a dozens other devices with it as well. - fastest charging ? Certainly not. It could be classed as semi fast with new 200W, and of course 120 and 87W devices. Nah, lot of Hype and isn't ground breaking or innovative like the 11 ultra was in a way.
I still hate the inscreen readers. If you have the slightest bit of dirt on your skin - good luck. I miss the reliable side or back print readers. Also still can't get used to AOD. Battery life is too important. 2 features I would def pay for over my mi ultra is side / back print and an a good ol Notification LED. AOD sucks.
Nobody does that anymore except for Sony .... I was sad about it years ago but I went for 512GB UFS and never looked back. So much faster and easier to work with.

Xiaomi Mi 11 ULTRA is a better phone and has a better camera system. The ultra wide and telephoto of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra have taken a step backwards. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra main camera isn't that much better than Xiaomi Mi 11 ULTRAs.
The camera system seems better and the back display seems great for selfies but the processor is the main dealbreaker for me, even with bigger battery the processor heats too much and its not efficient so if you keep it for some years the battery won't last much longer.

Hi, in Indonesia in here there are Xiaomi 12s ultra but price is high 2000$ it is not official shop. But also in here Vivo also sell X80 Pro for 1300$ just want to ask advice, which device im buy? My main focus is for camera and productivity not for gaming.

I find it bizarre that people keep recommending Samsung even though they have a major GOS throttling scandal. Not to mention the exynos chips and all the problems that come with that. Why not the ZenFone 9 or the Pixel 6 Pro for the vivo x80 Pro? I'm sure all three of those phones have their flaws, but at least they weren't manipulating the benchmarks. Not to mention that Samsung only gives you s22 plus for $1000, the ultra is $1,300.
Well defiantly not the Exynos models, they are trash but the SD8 is fine. It's more for the software and cameras. My main phones I use are the Huawei Mate X2 and iPhone 13 Pro max.

It's some odd load idle wake launcher issue. Barely happens on my 12S Ultra, more on the 12 Pro and all the time on my Redmi K30 Pro Zoom really bad.

The stabilization looks really good even with 5x zoom.
Yes, as it has OIS + EIS which really keeps the 5x zoom stable.

What an amazing review. I have seen an insane amount of reviews but none covers the points that you said on this video. As much as it hurts to say it, unfortunately this isn't the special phone i was hoping to be. Plus the China exclusiveness really kills it for me. I shall be taking a step back and waiting for a potential Honor/Samsung flagship this fall.
This and the 67W charging... My wife's Mi 10 Ultra has 120w and I really wanted an upgrade from my aging P30 Pro now.... which all of a sudden can't hold a battery charge after vacation. There seems to be no clear cut phone winner anymore like back when I got my P30 Pro... such a rock/paper/scissors game and I'm genuinely NOT excited to shop for a phone,,,

I have this phone and it has the most impressive camera I've ever seen on a smart phone. My previous phone was a S22 Ultra but seeing all the reviews for this one I had to jump ship. Never have I had a product where my hands-on experience impresses me more so than the reviews. I am in the States on AT&T. My current location doesn't get 5G so it's LTE for me which is still pretty fast but whenever I drive to a known 5g location again I'll confirm. I am aware that 2/4 of the supported 5g bands don't work on my network. There's that tradeoff of it being a china exclusive phone and not international. Given the choice again i'd still purchase it. Personally, I think this is the camera to beat on any smartphone.

GN1 is the sensor that is hitting the perfect spot of -
1. being a very large sensor[ 1/1.3 inch ]
2. companies working on it each year to optimize it more and more.
As a matter of fact, except for few technical geeks or pro level photographers, no customer really cares about the sensor size. "Oh, a 1 inch sensor? Damn i'm getting this phone at any cost."

Sounds reasonable. Vivo is using that sensor already since the Vivo X50 Pro+. Now they are using a slightly altered version called GNV, which is still in its core the same sensor. And the Vivo X80 Pro is producing outstanding photos. Also, the more sensors are produced the more the production costs are reduced.
The Sony IMX707--used in the Xiaomi 12 Pro, 12S and 12S Pro--also looks like an amazing sensor. Xiaomi could've used it in the Ultra model, and the saved costs they could've invested in a better front camera.
Main camera takes nice shots, great colors, but wtf is that 1080p front cam and 95kbps audio?

Probably the best in taking photos from the main camera, the zoom and ultra wide are great too, but video part still has some catching up to do with all the competitors
A lot of work still with video performance the dropped frames and bad audio, then the front facing cameras with only 1080p support in 2022 ...

great review! the bitrate and front camera 1080p resolution are the most disappointing thing about xiaomi's flagships idk why they won't go for 4k. it sucks. i hope they fix it in the future smartphone releases.
About hit or miss focusing, interestingly MKBHD said opposite. Just saying. I trust your real usage reviews.
I posted a few examples of this in the video. The focal point is very narrow on that main camera and at times when it shouldn't have focus issues it would. Be just slightly out of focus and soft. Very annoying.
One of the largest reviewers in China (小白) also highlighted the same focus issue illustrated here in this review so it's clearly an issue. Will be interesting to see if they manage improve it via software updates

Thank you so much for showing the size comparison between the 12S Ultra and the 7S Pro. I’m really on the fence between the 2. I love bigger screen phone’s, but I keep hearing that the 7S pro is not going to get very many software updates, where as with the 12S ultra I know will get at least three years with the potential of being able to root and load custom roms. Anyway, keep up the good work.
Good to know. A few outlets have said it’s not a big upgrade from 11 ultra in leica vivid. Leica authentic eats dynamic range. But some outlets just really love the 1inch.

Not going to lie, I jumped to the camera part immediately.
It seems the camera is a bit overhyped, particularly as there are other phones with relatively large sensors which aren't far behind in terms of image quality.
The bitrate thing is annoying - I wonder if FilmicPro or something can record in higher bitrates, though historically Xioamis Camera2 support has been kinda lacking.

it was 23.95 but I rendered it as 30 FPS in my timeline of course so that might have helped.

Yes it will work but if you need LTE band 20 it won't get onto 4G. I live in Spain now.

The reason for judder or better said sutter is high shutter speed. A phone can’t change aperture. After testing different settings, I came to conclusion, that judder free video is possible, when the shutter speed last as long as a frame. So 1/30 for 30fps. 1/60 for 60fps. Some say use the double shutter speed, but to me, that one can be choppy too. Some phones use sensors that can use iso lower than 100. Those can use lower shutter speeds and seem having less stutter. Xiaomi uses a sensor than has iso 100 as the lowest setting. Iphone can go lower.

There must be an app you're installing that is causing that issue with the spiraling icon when going back to the home screen. I got a 12X and in that review you found that issue as well. After a month of use I have yet to see that bug once.
And I'm pretty sure that 7% overnight battery lose is due to the damn Meta App Manager.
I am on the on verge of buying this thing (after watching many of your excellent comparisons with other phones). If you are only going to use it as a pocket camera (and you are located in the US), does it matter whether it's a Chinese or Global version or that it's EU ROM? (Sorry if these are dumb questions, but the answers have eluded me thus far...)
96kbps is ridiculous for a phone of this caliber! They REALLY should fix that. Other than that, I really feel the camera is not that good… as you said, there are other phones with similar quality but without the cons.

Great review as usual. Last year Mi 10s is still better in sound quality and camera. Mi10s has the best stereo audio. You Can make a comparison if possible.
Yeah, I used that phone for a while. It is still Xiaomi's best phone for audio to date, both for the speakers and recording sound. It's a pity that they can't give their top flagships audio quality like this. This phone is no longer officially sold by Xiaomi though. It's gone off the market so it can't be bought from official sources anymore. It also never launched outside China

Yeah my Mi 10 Pro had much better speakers than my 11 Ultra and 12S Ultra. It was quite noticable. I was also disappointed it went backwards despite the Harmon Kardon tuning on the 11 and 12. Thats why when i saw 13s dropped the Harmon Kardon tuning it didn't bother me. Although i haven't heard a 13 in person yet so not sure if its improved or not. Too many reviewers don't focus on sound comparisons.

500 usd phone trying to be an Iphone. Years passed after lots of models Xiaomi still haven't fixed the cons you mentioned. Everything you said as final words are true. As a Mi 9T user for 2.5 years my next phone definitely won't be a Xiaomi. For who thinks to buy Xiaomi let me tell you a thing nothing will be fixed with updates. If something is broken in initial firmware it will stay as it is.
My main phone is still xiaomi redmi note 8 pro, everything beyond that looks amazing in xiaomi category, so definetly thumbs up for this!

yikes thats way lower than Redmi Note 11 Pro plus which uses 256kbps for video I believe. They have no excuse its holding back the phones potential. I noticed colour shifting with the selfie camera in the video. for me it seems the optical zoom 5x is the real show stealer really great quality. I dont know if its worth three times the cost when looking at the cameras compared to the redmi note 11 pro plus that i picked up. but those profiles, is that camera app specific to the phone or is it the standard miui camera apk? it needs a dedicated camera app not that miui camera app other handsets use.
Looks like another instalment of great hardware let down by sub optimal software configuration and optimisation. Let's see how long is it going to take them to improve things. Sometimes it feels like the China launch is for beta testing and after lessons are learned they give it go on global markets, time will tell
It does seem that way, look at the Xiaomi 12 Pro. I was a mess when I reviewed the import model, but the Global variant was so much better, better thermals and more refined.

That leather is horrible and we all know how leather ends up after a while. Other than that, wow. Finally a phone as good as the 11 ultra. People always look past xiaomi but they are without a doubt the best along with oppo when you look away from the usual brands.
Why is 1080p video for selfy disappointing when it's rarely used by anyone? Not even needed. Selfy cam shouldn't be needed tbh but unfortunately we live in a world full of self obsessed people.

Can you do a lowlight night photography test? I'm curious how it holds up against other smart phone and if you can, compare it to a 1inch sensor camera like the Sony Rx100.
Pretty tough match for rx100. Even with 5 axis, very hard to match up to nightmode. Even if you can handhold for 1 or 2 seconds, the highlights will blow out.

That’s my guess. I’ve never owned a 1 inch sensor camera. I have a slightly bigger sensor camera, even with apsc, and similar f1.8, you do end up with quite high iso even at 1/10s or 1/20s at dark places. On a 1 inch I’m guessing the similar 800 iso or 1600 or 3200 iso will not be as clean as night mode, but sensors do improve over time, so more modern 1 inch might have cleaner high iso, maybe rx100 mark 4 but I doubt it, even the zv1 also about there. Might be able to handhold rx100 for 1 second that can drop to maybe iso 400 or 200 where it should be night mode clean.

We gotta look at facts:
- best display ? No
- best design ? Maybe
- best speakers ? No
- best camera system ? No, isn't class leading so far. Zoom is even dissapointing, front camera is limited.
- best price ? Certainly Not
- best software ? No Xiaomi never does and their updates aren't always great. Look at the 11 ultra
- availability ? No, never global versions of their best devices
- best SOC ? So far in the Android space but others have it too. We now see nearly half a dozens other devices with it as well.
- fastest charging ? Certainly not. It could be classed as semi fast with new 200W, and of course 120 and 87W devices.
Nah, lot of Hype and isn't ground breaking or innovative like the 11 ultra was in a way.
I still hate the inscreen readers. If you have the slightest bit of dirt on your skin - good luck. I miss the reliable side or back print readers. Also still can't get used to AOD. Battery life is too important. 2 features I would def pay for over my mi ultra is side / back print and an a good ol Notification LED. AOD sucks.

Xiaomi Mi 11 ULTRA is a better phone and has a better camera system. The ultra wide and telephoto of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra have taken a step backwards. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra main camera isn't that much better than Xiaomi Mi 11 ULTRAs.

The camera system seems better and the back display seems great for selfies but the processor is the main dealbreaker for me, even with bigger battery the processor heats too much and its not efficient so if you keep it for some years the battery won't last much longer.

It's too bad that reviewers never mention band compatibility of the phones. This one getting the Chinese version lacks alot of the western bands so be careful if you are thinking of buying it.
At the end LTE band 20 is missing listed as a con, there was so much to cover with this phone.

My main focus is for camera and productivity not for gaming.
The Vivo I think. Software is better and the Zeiss T* coating on the lens is better than the Leica I think. But see my review first ruclips.net/video/Zuk49Jrb8uk/видео.html it also has it's share of downsides like the front facing camera is also poor.
We need more focus on testing the focus on smartphones in general, when reviewers can show totally different results.
Try watch camera review from Ben gadget, he do a lot camera testing with this phone included auto focus test and shutter speed
I find it bizarre that people keep recommending Samsung even though they have a major GOS throttling scandal. Not to mention the exynos chips and all the problems that come with that. Why not the ZenFone 9 or the Pixel 6 Pro for the vivo x80 Pro? I'm sure all three of those phones have their flaws, but at least they weren't manipulating the benchmarks.
Not to mention that Samsung only gives you s22 plus for $1000, the ultra is $1,300.
Well defiantly not the Exynos models, they are trash but the SD8 is fine. It's more for the software and cameras. My main phones I use are the Huawei Mate X2 and iPhone 13 Pro max.
