I used to have an off air recording of this documentary years ago. The tape either broke or it got tossed out. I miss this History Channel from the 90s and early 00s. Along with shows like History’s Lost and Found, American Eats, American Drinks, The Fifties, Wild West Tech, etc...I’ve never seen the two sequel documentaries though.
YEEESSSSSSSSSSS!!! I've been looking for this one as my vhs player no longer works and the vhs tape I recorded off the tv is pretty degraded anyway. It is unwatchable on a hdtv. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS GEM ABOUT AMERICA's romance of the highway.
Thanks so much for uploading this. It is so fascinating :) And when I saw the clip of Harry Truman in Frederick Maryland my mouth dropped open since I am from Maryland and live near there :)
I recently contacted the History Channel and ask them to put all the Highway Hangout Documentaries (I think there were 3 in total) on their History Vault "streaming service." They just told me "Thanks for your input we are always adding things to the History Vault." but they never said if or when they would release Highway Hangouts. However, If enough of us request Highway Hangouts then maybe they will get released to History Vault.
OMG! Thank you for posting this. I have the VHS version and transferred it to DVD, but it keeps freezing. I usually have it on loop in the garage while working on the car. Now that it's here, I can play it without it having any hang ups. I so appreciate this!
Dear VHS VAULT, Would you happen to have the History documentary about summer vacations? It is like this one but shows different places families with baby boomers visited. It is fun and interesting. Thank you for this gem. There is also a highway hangout part two. I can't remember the actual name of the summer vacation doc. I taped it off the tv on the early 2000's.
+ibrake4butterflies I love pop culture in general, I love modern history when it comes to pop culture. And I don't have any docs on Summer Vacation, the only reason I have this is because the tape I had recorded off TV won't play nice with my current VCR, so I bought it online.
I tried looking for this on History channel, but it is not available. Thank you so much for posting this. I literally look every few weeks for it and viola....its here. I have a vhs tape of all those road trip docs but they have degraded.
Thanks soo much for posting this!! This reminds me of Summer's past of watching this on history Channel before pawn stars ruined it. So much memories

Thanks for uploading this. Been looking for this documentary.
Hopefully, someone will upload the sequel "More High Way Hangouts" which aired in 2000 I believe.

Wow, I worked on this show. Haven’t seen it since it originally aired.
Intermission was my favorite part
Subbed. Are you in advertising or are you into American pop culture?
