- Sōya (宗谷) was originally commissioned as a cargo ship by the Soviets in 1936 and launched on 16th February 1938 as payment to the Japanese government for the construction of the South Manchuria Railway.
During the second world war, she was assigned by the Imperial Japanese Navy as an ammunition supply ship, and thereafter, as a mine sweeper, where she would have many close calls from enemy torpedoes and aircraft during her call of duty. After the war, Sōya was decommissioned from the Navy and assumed her new role as an evacuation ship repatriating countless citizens from Japan's former colonies.
In 1949, she was assigned to Japan's Maritime Safety Agency as a supply ship for remote lighthouses, earning her the nickname of 'Santa Claus of the Sea'. In 1950, she was refitted to prepare for service as Japan's first dedicated Antarctic research ship. Modifications included replacing her steam engines and installation of a helicopter deck.
After her Antarctic research assignments came to an end, Sōya became an ice-breaking rescue ship for the Maritime Safety Agency where she continued this role until her retirement in 1978.
She now rests at the Museum of Maritime Science in Tokyo, where she serves as a museum ship, educating the young and old alike on her varied and colorful history.

When I saw the tumbnail I thought this would be at least 2 times bigger, de detailwork is absolutely fantastic! 👍
Thank you!
Same here, absolutely incredible
woah I read the description, she had so many experienced action, from munitions ship, to avoiding torpedos while minesweeping then turned as a research ship and after a rescue ship. what a legend
You know, when the finishing touches start half way through - you know you're in good company.
Thank you!
It takes a skilled model maker to create something special from some plain bits of plastic. Really nice work there 👍
Thank you!
Painting is the key to making it come alive
Nice touch trimming the excess decal away from the helipad 👌 The rigging is the star of the show, well worth the effort. She's a beauty.
Thank you!
When I saw the rigging I was like "done" whoa such intricate work!!! Really a work of art, nicely done 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you so much for the compliments!
Such a beautifully made model of a beautiful ship
Thank you!
Wow, this model comes with bulkheads. More ship model kits need to include them also. Awesome build btw.
Thanks for the compliment! Really appreciate it!
The bulkheads are more for model rigidity than as a part of the actual model.
Beautiful build start to finish - your approach was fascinating . How did I miss watching such talent for so long!
Thank you for your kind words 🙂
Do more ships. How you paint them, detail them, and weather them is so satisfying. I literally started watching you last night and I immediately subscribed
Thank you! Will build more in future.
amazing job! I have had this kit (or one of the versions) for at least 10 years and no idea how to tackle it.... and now the wheels are turning and I see how to do it easily!
Thank you! I look forward to seeing your video build!
It's very nice and politely work. Also finish is so nice. I'm looking forward to watch the next.
Thank you!
It takes an Expert to work on these Smaller scale models and small professional tools which I wonder where to find 🤔 but I thank for your time and effort to build this and showing it wonderful job 👍
Thank you for your kind words!
I have done some wooden model ships. But this is something alse, simply brilliant.
Thank you for your kind comments!
Fantastic project , the Soya Ice Breaker Ship . I like very much how you assembling the parts , the painting and the weathering process . Thank you for sharing this great video , my friend... Really , that's a fine art !🥇🏆👍👏👏👏
Thank you my friend!
Nice colorful paint scheme and outstanding rigging. Well done!
Thank you!
Fantastic work. All that rigging would drive me mad. Nice to read the real ship has been preserved after is long and varied career.
Thank you!
Weathering and rigging are excellent. I think you would agree the lifeboat molded tarp zigzag stuff should have been sanded off and remade. Great attention to editing dozens of hours into 12 interesting minutes.
Thank you! Yes on hindsight, it would have been a good idea to redo the zigzag lines.
This is so damn satisfying. The weathering details are impeccable, and really sell the scale!!
Thank you!
Excellent work. What a beautiful looking ship!! And I must compliment you on the rigging, which I am sure took hours. Very well done again.
Thank you for the nice compliment. Yes the rigging took a long time. I love your channel! Cheers!
I love it what a beautiful finish fantastic skill
Thank you
Thank you very much!
Inspirational build, you do very good work. Hope to see more.
I would love to see you build the Pontos Soya sometime.
Thank you my friend
That's such a pricey kit, $300+ USD right??
@@phillyphreshh Yes, it is pricey. I paid about 400 Euro for the kit. It is still in my stash waiting to be built.
Awesome build. Incredible detail.
Thank you!
Hi Plamo . WOW ! You are an artist & master builder . Your skill & techniques are amazing to watch . I love ships & model building . You have inspired me to try to do more . God bless . ❤ Mark (Toronto)
Thank you!
Fantastic work, would be great to see her in a diorama through ice.
Thank you!
Started of pretty fiddly, then the tiny photo etch parts were miniscule.. and the rigging was ridiculous! I would have gone crazy trying to build something with so much fine detail. I went half mad just watching *you* build it!
Thank you!
She is a miracle ship
彼女は奇跡の船ですからなあ。
Thank you!
Fantastic build, now I've seen how good it can look, I'm going to build the Soya now. Thanks for sharing.👍

Very impressive work resulting in a very realistic model. I spent many happy hours in high school building ship models made of paper...I think I ordered them from some company in Germany. Thanks for this.
Thank you!

I can't work out how you get the painting to look so good (practice I'm sure!) - maybe the air brush, black wash for the line indents and your lovely weathering effects? Subscribed!
Wonderful looking ship and great detail.
Thank you!
Exquisite outcome, looks ready to set sail. Brilliant attention to detail.
It has sails?
I'm sure that the kit had a special edition that came with a white metal pewter SnowCat
I think so too. But this one didn't have it.

Thank you!
Fantastic job👍🏼

Brilliant! Thank you for sharing 🙏
You're most welcome. Thank you!
Painting is very nice but parts connection is very poor. 6:15 The gaps are huge, you should find a way to fill them.
Thank you. Every model is a lesson for the next one.
Absolutely amazing! Well done!
Thank you!
Once again superb work.
Thank you!
A beautiful result! The detail and finish are fantastic, and I loved the progression from the boxed kit, to the finished model.
A project of this quality is way beyond my skills, so I will have to be satisfied with sticking to armour models.
I have subscribed, and I will be catching up with your previous projects, so please keep them coming!
Thank you for your kind comments! Will be making more videos in future.
@@PlamoSamurai Can regular acrylic Tamiya paint (or Vallejo's Model Color), and regular crazy glue be used for the Photoetch components?
@@theyesman9429 For Tamiya acrylic, yes. Vallejo I'm not sure. I normally use super glue or white PVA glue.
A master at work.
Thank you!
Beautiful work and fascinating video! How many hours did this take to build?
Thank you! It took many months.
Amazing work, thank you for sharing!
