I can't believe you didn't mention the damage model. That was the coolest thing about the game. I've played for hours just crashing the car. XD

"Better than it looks"? This looked awesome 25 years ago. Still remember the awe when I first played the game.

Gran turismo wow memories. But 4d stunts, lotus racing and those type of games have so much character. Same with the old rally games. I like you bring these games up and instantly I can relate to it and remember the good old days. Well done sir!

This and 1994 Papyrus Nascar racing, had the BEST damage models.

i absolutely loved it as a kid. Mostly because of the damage model and the cheats. I remember spending hours just shooting cars with the weird wheel cannon and watch them deform. But yeah, with games like beamNg around, there really is no need to get into Viper Racing again, except for nostalgia reasons

Do you know other games that feels like viper, where you can do a career, and buy small parts of your car to upgrade it, and feeling competition with the same people name against you?

@@JavelinDeMyrethe only think I remember doing is messing with all the tuning params to make stupid car that would instantly wheelie, roll over, etc.
like a sandbox game but just with a teeny tiny sandbox

just mentioning voodoo reminds distant memories of building your your PC, hanging around in the the pc hardware store district with all the chines guys pushing, burning cds with divx movies that you spent days downloading on p2p software (preferably at work with the pro internwt connection)

Could you make a guide on how to make the black colors not transparent? I would love to experience the nostalgia again without half the car being transparent

It's been a while since I got it running, but if I remember correctly, you need to get it running through dgVoodoo2.
Unfortunately the normal dgVoodoo2 installation doesn't work as Viper Racing has some odd code where it specifically tries to find the Windows version of the DirectX DLLs rather than using its local directory for preference.
IIRC, the process goes something like:
      - Get Viper Racing to the stage of running with transparent textures
      - Install dgvoodoo2 to the directory
      - Rename the correct one of dgVoodoo's replacement DLLs (I think it might be DDRAW.DLL) to something unique
      - Hex edit the reference to DDRAW.DLL in one of the Viper Racing executables to your uniquely named DLL
At that point Viper Racing should start running through dgVoodoo2. I'd advise leaving "watermark" enabled in dgVoodoo2 until it's definitely working.
There's a point in the video where I show some of this sped up (around where I say, "I'm not proud, but I have a working copy of Viper Racing")

How did you get the black to show up properly? I screamed at it for quite some time now, but it just didnt work for me

dgVoodoo, but that doesn't work out of the box - the game has some weird thing where it always tries to get the DirectX DLLs out of the Windows system directory. So I had to rename the dgVoodoo version of the DLL, then hex edit the game executable so it was looking for the new name and not DDRAW.DLL, at which point it started running through dgVoodoo and looking correct

I was the foremost expert at modding this game. Atleast as far as car handling, looks and sounds goes. /Matt @ VRGTA

I remember it having a lot of options in how you could set up a car, including things they'd never have needed to simulate just the Viper. Do any of the mods from that era still survive on the web?

This is one of those games that you really want to love more than you really do... I mean, I still like it for what it is, a fun part of the earlier days of PC gaming, but can't really recommend it to anyone.

Definitely. Sierra seemed to have this affliction for publishing rough-edged yet realistic driving games featuring vehicles notoriously hard to drive in real life - I wonder if they'd have had better luck with more accessible subject matter and a little more time for polish.

The ability to export the car models, paint them in Photoshop or similar and then import them back into the game was fantastic ! Imagine a Forza or GT with this function today ! Try that now and get a lifetime ban for hacking the game ffs 🤣😛😡

I used to love the one in NASCAR Racing, exporting it to paint the basic design in Deluxe Paint then reimporting it and using the stickers in the Paint Shop to add extra sponsors and details.
