- Today we're going to check out some artworks by American graphic artist Michael Whelan. Michael is known for painting Elric of Melniboné from Michael Moorcock's books. Michael is one of the outstanding artists within fantasy and science fiction and he is also known for painting some amazing artworks for metal bands such as Cirith Ungol, Obituary, Sepultura, Evile, Smoulder and Sacred Rite. So in today's video we're going to check out some metal artworks made by Michael Whelan. Enjoy!

Although he wasn't officially credited on the movie, there was a scene in the 1990 version of Stephen King's It that featured humans in a spider web that looked a lot like that iconic Cause of Death cover art. It was a probably influenced by Michael Whelan's art since he did a lot of other work for King.

The really cool thing is that Whelan is a metal fan. I interviewed him in front of a live audience many years ago. One of the audience members brought up his art being used for metal album covers. I fully expected Whelan to say he just licensed his work but didn’t listen to the music. No, he said he was a fan of heavy music and was proud of his work being used in that way.
And as I recall, Whelan either didn't charge the bands for use of his artwork, or charged a very modest amount.
He is a class act. Cheers!

Not only is Whelan a phenomenal artist, but he (and his wife Audrey) are really cool. I own artists proofs or numbered prints of all of his Elric book-covers since I'm a big Elric/Moorcock fan (I ran MM's fan club back in the early 90s), and I have a few of the Cirith Ungol albums on vinyl or CD.
He is a man of many talents. :) Cheers!

yeah, it's all about time, those videos takes the longest to do and some bands only generate a few hundred views so it's not worth my time to do those unfortunately. But I'll probably get around to do a few of those over time.@@BrainDead_Ed_102-gz9zp

As far as I'm concerned King of the Dead is the best album since RAINBOW - Rising. Of course, the artwork is fantastic too.

That is some killer artwork he did indeed! Was wondering if you plan on doing your annual Best of Metal releases of 2023. I found your lists of the past two years to pretty informative and helpful as far as finding out about bands I might not have otherwise known about.
If I remember correctly they don't listen to much new music. A lot of their previous lists were based on votes gathered through Discord/Patreon.
