    Since all of us gamers are such unique snowflakes, it stands to reason that we're not all drawn to the same types of games. What do your gaming preferences say about you? Are you drawn to competition? To exploring the terrain? Or do you want a game that tells a great story? We all search for different experiences, and these preferences might even say something about our IRL outlook. So what different gaming personalities are there? Watch the episode and find out!

    You forgot the problem solvers! People who enjoy playing puzzle games, Myst and Stealth titles. People who get annoyed by fast paced FPSs that don't let you breathe for two seconds before two action sequences, but who like tower defense games that involve more strategy than accuracy or repetition. People who like mysterious game settings and convoluted narratives because the games are for them puzzles to solve. I know I am one of them.

      That might actually be a combination of some of the other types, or a form of challenger. Instead of wanting to one-up another person, however, you want your mind to triumph over the challenge set before you. It could be a missing type, though.

    • @rocksrollsroyce
      @rocksrollsroyce 10 лет назад

      Myst is mostly "discovery", but stealth is mostly "challenge", not really too much in common there. ^_^

    • @Selestrielle
      @Selestrielle 10 лет назад

      I would actually put stealth in discovery as well. For me at least. Stealth games are fun because of experimentation too. Going across the level feels nice, but learning the multiples way to "solve" it is much more interesting than just completing it once.
      And I would put a bit of challenge in Myst too, because some of the puzzles are so obtuse, figuring what you're supposed to do can be an intellectual challenge.

    My favorite game of All time IS NOT Pokemon, it is Earthbound, and I love Chrono Trigger and while Pokemon is up there on my list.
    I enjoy stories more than anything else, a very good story.
    Earthbound clicks with me, and makes me feel something most games can not.

    • @s1lverp3nguin

      RPGs are a tricky thing with me. Paper Mario was the first game I ever played, and as a result, I love all the Mario RPGs. But whenever I tried to play a more serious RPG like Final Fantasy or Skyrim or Fire Emblem, I never got quite as into it as I thought I would. So I figured that I didn't really like RPGs.
      But now I'm playing Chrono Trigger, and I think I'm in love with that game. Everything about that game is amazing - the gameplay, the characters, the music. I love it all. So maybe now that I've developed more of an appreciation of and RPG like Chrono Trigger, I might have more of an appreciation for the genre as a whole.
      Sorry to give my life story here. I just got excited about Chrono Trigger.

    What does it say about a person who can see a bit of themselves in every part of that list? I even play different games for different reasons. I play WoW for the social aspect, Hearthstone and Civilization because I enjoy challenges, The Elder Scrolls because I thoroughly love fantasy. I play Minecraft as a way to explore, and express myself. I play Gone Home and Walking Dead because I love a good story and I play Cut The Rope and Don't Step on the White Tile because I enjoy mindless games when I'm waiting for things to happen.
    I can't really identify which ones I enjoy more. I just enjoy all the types of fun.

    • @ArchinaGM
      @ArchinaGM 10 лет назад +1

      I would definitely agree with that statement. Having a wide variety of games to choose from can really help with all the needs you've been craving and not just one. It also stops your favourite type of games from seeming bland after you've played them for ages. Personally I prefer the competitive side of gaming with a side of exploration and fantasy for when I just want to disengage myself from the world and all it's worries for a while. So a normal gaming day could involve me tweaking my Pokémon roster for battling, attempting to break my own high-scores on One Finger Death Punch and then winding down after all that with some casual play of Starbound.

    • @OurayTheOwl
      @OurayTheOwl 10 лет назад

      I can relate to that also, but i also bet the way we play Elder Scrolls and Minecraft differ to a great extent even if the reasons are the same.
      Although MMOs are pretty much designed were you have to socialize, you can rely on PUGs instead of guilds to get through them to an extent so even antisocial people can enjoy themselves.

    I think the different categories need some revising. The ones chosen are well-defined, and I agree with for the most part. I find High-Fidelity, Fantasy Gamer and Submissive to be a bit too vague, though, not really being a description of your personality. Explorer, Challenger, Social Butterfly, Self-Expressor (which I would rather call 'Role-players) and Story-Teller are good where they are. I would add:
    Completionist- The one who plays games for the accomplishment more than the gameplay. The sort of guy who will go out of his way to collect everything, meet everyone and go everywhere. Likely to like Pokemon and any game with loads of achievements.
    Puzzle Solver- The one who plays for the feeling of warmth in their chest when the 'puzzle solved' jingle plays. Often a casual gamer. They enjoy many iPhone games, Portal and/or Legend of Zelda.
    Historian- Similar to Explorer, these gamers prefer to delve into the LORE of a game, rather than the game itself, or enjoy lore-driven games spent exploring ancient ruins. These guys will browse a game's Wiki, actually spend time reading the in-game books to get everything they can get, and maybe join forums to discuss theories about the games. People like these would enjoy The Elder Scrolls, the studio ICO games, and Journey.
    Sensory- The most basic type of gamer, divided into Musicians and Artists. These gamers enjoy games for their soundtracks or visuals. Musicians would like games like Final Fantasy, Halo or Hype: The Time Quest, while Artists would basically like any recent game, and more visually innovative ones like Wind Waker or Paper Mario.
    Innovator- These ones strive for new experiences in games. New, never-before or rarely-seen fuctions that titillate the player in new ways, guaranteeing a truly unique experience. These gamers would like games like Mirror's Edge, Portal and Shadow of the Colossus.
    Beater- Enjoy the sensation of dominating an enemy, regardless of the challenge. Seeing entire armies of mooks falling before their blade is what they play for. These players would enjoy Dynasty Warriors and playing Fire Emblem on Easy. (Not judging, this is totally me.)
    Thrill-Seeker- These gamers love the heart-pounding experience of being thoroughly freaked out. Some prefer ambient, implicit fear like in Amnesia: The Dark Descent, while others prefer jump-inducing scare games like Dead Space. These sub-categories could be called Creepers and Jumpers.
    Creators- These gamers enjoy showing their creativity as they play. They may enjoy solving puzzles in creative ways, but more commonly, they simply enjoy the experience of putting things together to create something new. Gamers like these would plainly enjoy Minecraft, particularly in creative mode.
    OKAY. I think that covers it! Comments?

    I'm, like, 99% explorer. I didn't complete a single quest in Skyrim, but still played for many hours just strutting around the world and chasing down deer to kill with my bare hands. I bought a house in real life almost exclusively on the grounds that it had a private wooded backyard to explore. I sometimes drop a pile of random objects on the ground so they randomly form a "landscape", and then imagine a little me exploring the pile and through that process explore it myself. Yup, I'm an explorer.

  • @saikoujikan

    What about gamers who are interested in the psychological journey that a game takes them on, like playing portal for the Glados/Chell interactions and the feeling of being trapped in a maze, enjoying shadow of the colossus for the experience of the calm before the storm and the subtle interactions between man and beast, as well as your relationship with your horse horse, playing katamari Damacy and specifically delighting in rolling up the area you started in as it really feels like you've grown so much since then, or even playing Mario galaxy not just to finish the levels or fight all the bosses, but to enjoy the sense of being flung into the far reaches of space, stranded from all that is familiar to you, meeting a kindly denizen and making use of her ship as a shelter, and traversing each star system in order to get closer and closer to home. Infact, the main reason I didn't enjoy galaxy 2 was because it did not have this sense of being stranded, even though it was essentially the same game with new levels.
    What category of gamer would I constitute as? It's not so much exploration I enjoy, or even the challenge. It's the experience itself, and the little narratives I create out of them.

    surprised he didnt mention, other than the self expressive one, any kind of constructive type. someone who wants to build something and have a noticeable, permanent effect on a game world. it would fit in with stuff like minecraft, rpg elements, those late game build up kinda rts plays, and the design centered games like space engineers and from the depths.

    • @anoukfleur2513
      @anoukfleur2513 8 лет назад +4

      Hmm, that still kind of sounds self-expressive... But do you mean like sandbox games? That's actually my favorite genre, games like the Sims, LBP... I guess it's kind of like storytelling, but rather telling the story yourself instead of having it told. I'd imagine it goes hand in hand with creativity.

    • @EvelynNdenial
      @EvelynNdenial 8 лет назад +1

      less art/story more engineering i guess. i enjoy learning, understanding, interacting with, and ultimately exploiting systems. of really any kind. complex game mechanics thrill me because its something i can deconstruct, play with, and optimize. the more open ended the better because that allows more interactions to happen making as many layers of complexity as you/i have patience.

    I feel that a few more traits were left out.
    How about those type of players who enjoy the process of strengthening their characters. Those who enjoy the chimes that go off during level ups and additional abilities popping up. Those who love gathering materials and drops in Monster Hunter to get the coolest looking armor and those who get giddy over planning and building the most complicated and massive mansion in Minecraft. What i mean are the players who enjoy the "journey" to improvement and achievement.
    I suppose it's somewhat a "Challenger" trait if it's related to Machida's quote of "overcoming obstacles" but it's a bit unclear the way the trait was explained. Oh well, still a good video.

    From most of my interactions with the community, it seems like the "Challenger" is the only one who get's any real legitimacy within the gaming community. Even here on the PBS Game/Show. This bums me out. Maybe it's because they are the loud ones, I don't know?
    I've known for a while that I like to explore places and take my time. I like interacting and partying with NPCs but not real people. Real people seem to be in too much of a hurry. The other people will be running around saying things like "ok go here and do X"..... "ok, now go here and do Y". Particularly in MMOS where most of the content it seems is just meant to be rushed through because "the game doesn't start until endgame". So apparently I played WoW for like 4yrs and yet never even started. Strange.

    • @joshuarichardson6529

      Strategic games have three main traits that people are attracted to.
      Achievement: Beating an opponent or challenge.
      Exploration: Discovering new things in the game (places or ways mechanics can work)
      Socialization: Playing with your friends.
      Abnegation may also apply, if you play the game just because "killing time".

  • @7marquism

    I experienced them all since childhood. But as an adult, I turned out to be a storyteller. I play games only when they have a great story and even more interested if there's alternate endings/choices that matter throughout the game. This helps replay-ability or the ability to talk about my experience with somone else who carried a different experience. If this is primary, it doesn't matter which genre it is under. Chrono Trigger, Heavy Rain, Last of Us got me to like linear storytelling again though, Beyond Two Souls, Inquisition, and Until Dawn would be my key games. But I do enjoy multiplayer a lot, but the thing is, when I play multiplayer in Last of Us, I created a story being both a firefly and a Hunter. It was fun. Someone said "You really had this in mind the first day you played online?" in the party. I said "yup". During childhood though, it was all about adventures and fighting games: Dragon Warrior 7, Dragon Quest 8, Final Fantasy series, Kingdom Hearts, Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. In the end, I'm purely a storyteller gamer.

      Horror is a pretty broad genre. Are you a Resident Evil type (Survival Horror) or the Amnesia (In it to be scared or disturbed) type? If we go in general, you're most likely a Hi-fidelity (Horror is using the senses to create Fear) with a little bit of Explorer (You like to explore places and solve puzzles).

      Horror in general entices me. Doesn't matter if its the Resident Evil, The Last Of Us kind of Horror (Survival Horror)
      The Dead Space kind of Horror (Action, Jump Scares)
      Silent Hill kind of Horror (Psychological Horror)
      Fatal Frame kind of Horror (Supernatural Horror)
      I like it all really, I just like for something to be able to keep me on my foot.. I think Horror games are the most interactive kind of game, it actually reaches out to you and MAKES you feel something. Its too bad they come out far in few between action shooters.

    I had managed to get a huge sense of deja vu from this video and that's because Mark LeBlanc's list is based off of another paper outlining the Mechanics/Dynamics/Aesthetics principle in games. www.cs.northwestern.edu/~hunicke/MDA.pdf Part of that paper is a listing of aesthetics that games can create through their mechanics acting in tandem. It seems the list used in the video is based off of the different aesthetics put down in that paper, but the important thing that the paper says is their list is by no means comprehensive.
    The guys over at Extra Creditz expanded beyond the original MDA article by adding a "competition" aesthetic into games (outlined in their "Aesthetics of Play" episode). They give the definition as an assertion of dominance. Scoreboards and other listings also help to fuel this aesthetic. It's a bit different from the challenge because challenge can arise from difficulty and mastery over game systems rather than defeating other people.
    I myself have done research into educational games and one of the major reasons I buy games is to try and learn something about the real world (Age of Empires, the old Impressions Games citybuilders, any Tycoon game) so you could add an aesthetic of learning, realism, or simulation onto this list.

    I would say that I am largely an Explorer, Self Expresser, I like to explore the environment, but I want to do it my way. Whether it is exploring Skyrim with my chosen class and equipment with a face I spent a good amount of time customising, Or looking around on Minecraft with a house built the way I want. I like looking around and feeling invested with my place in it.
    What I would guess it says about me is that I like to explore the greater environment of something, but do it a way I like. Not exclusive as afterwards I would say that I also like a challenge and story. Actually I think that my preferences say why I love playing Legend of Zelda games, but often end up losing interest, it is because I love exploring Hyrule, but I wish I could feel more invested in my character's customisation.

    I mostly play Turn Based Strategies and Simulations of varying kinds (including management games like simcity and rollercoaster tycoon, as well as the older sims games. (Which are surprisingly intense if you set yourself the target of finding 8 people a partner, getting then to the top of their career and having 2 kids before elderhood))
    Back in the day when you would play flash games online, I used to play games that required strategy to win, essentially simple strategy games.
    However I'm not limited to those genres, I play the likes of GTA Online and Papers Please as well, and also using ingame level builders to make levels and share them with freinds.

    Personally, I would consider myself a storyteller-explorer type, but there's a very important (and rapidly growing in popularity) genre of game that you forgot to mention altogether, and that's the goal-oriented game, often sub-genred into a survival theme. Games like minecraft, or as I've been playing recently, Cataclysm: Dark days Ahead, where you focus primarily on surviving the world that you find yourself in. Games where gathering resources, crafting materials/weapons/tools/etc, building shelter, and fighting (but mostly fleeing) the hostile environment is the primary focus of the gameplay. This is the type of game where the task at hand is actually more important than the story, or when there's otherwise nothing else to do unless you give yourself something to do. There's also the type of game that has an astounding level of complexity, such as Dwarf Fortress, which allows you to do pretty much whatever you want at any time. That kind of mechanic really benefits the survival theme in such a way that the incredible depth actually improves the gameplay to a significant degree.
    So, I suppose the question is: what would you call someone who enjoys free-form survival/sandbox type games?

    I'd actually say that not what you play, but how you play tells a lot more about your personality. In Skyrim for example, you can be a social butterfly by hanging out in the cities, talking to all NPCs, marrying, etc or an explorer, disregarding your quests and discovering awesome stuff just by wandering around. I guess the storyteller would be someone who is reading all the books and wants to learn as much as possible about the lore/world. And so on.
    Imo, the games we choose to play reflect our personal interests and what we are fascinated by. How the we play these games, however, is entirely left to us and that's where we can let our personality dictate the entertainment.

  • @Pandsu
    @Pandsu 10 лет назад +1

    Well, I think it does say a lot about me. When it comes to the examples in this video, I find myself sorta in all of these, though the explorer and self-expression types to a much lesser extent. I do enjoy both of those things but they have to be neatly intertwined with the rest of the design. I don't like completely freely exploring a world in most games and definitely prefer a more linear, guided tour with a more careful pacing, most of the time.
    Anyway, what I was saying is, the fact that I don't find myself fitting in 1 niche mentioned here or even a mix of just 2 or 3 definitely mirrors who I am in real life too. I am directionless, unfocused. I am interested in and decent at a lot of different things, maybe with a few tendencies, and some major dislikes for sure, but I just don't have this one thing that gives me the kind of identity I see with others. I am not exceptionally good at anything. Whatever community, fandom, hobby or profession I could join, I never truly feel like I belong. Because I split myself up, joining multiple camps but none completely.
    I like Anime, just to bring up an example, but among Anime fans I feel incredibly out of place. I am not exactly on their level when it comes to anything, really. Behavior, knowledge, experience, etc.
    Gaming is a huge focus for me but even there I often drop out of conversations when they get a little more in-depth.
    I'm interested in game development, multiple parts of it. I am interested in art. I am interested in writing. But I am not particularly great at any of these. Not good enough to take that anywhere. I probably know more about Game Design than someone who maybe just focuses on art or maybe even programming, but someone who focuses on Game Design leaves me just as dumbfounded.
    In a way, this is great. Just like I get to experience tons of different types of games because I don't focus on a specific one, I got an okay general knowledge and especially understanding of many different things and don't walk around with tunnel vision, only caring for my one thing I like, my one group I'm a part of.
    But on the other hand I'm just not impressive to anyone. Average at best at most of these things. And you just can't go very in-depth with me. Plus, like mentioned before, I feel like I lack a sense of identity. Because I'm a little bit of everything but nothing really.
    Like a truly uninteresting, uninspired protagonist in a piece of fiction.

    It's funny that after ~5 years of kicking virtual butt in fps's, I got so tired of it all, I completely left the genre and never really want to touch an online game anymore. Then recently, I realized I was never really playing cooperatively online in the first place. I only ever used COD (for ex.) to... well, measure my self-worth as a human being, I guess. I just can't be let loose in any virtual arena anymore, because I'm waay to competitive and it nearly broke my enjoyment of videogames forever. Now I've got a Wii U and I basically 'relearned' what made me fall in love with games in the first place - to be fully drawn into a world that isn't what I'm already experiencing daily in the first place, full of annoying people, also constantly measuring their self-worths as human beings...

    These Personality questions unfortunately tend to end up with people picking the group they "want" to be in rather than the group they actually are. Knowing this, Would it be possible for PBS Game/Show to suggest where I would place using the following knowledge?
    - Most time recorded in games: split between Final Fantasy 11 (MMO, very difficult but required parties of 6 people for most basic scenarios. Explored a ton in game, even though I was underlevel for most of it's content.) and Team Fortress 2. (FPS, usually stick to a server of regulars who's skills varied between average and higher then normal.)
    - Best Gaming Memory: Joining and getting ranked in a local tournament for UT 2003 (4th overall, but earned respect out of the regulars to the LAN center due to a very close match for 3rd.)
    - Currently playing: FFXIV (MMO, Not as difficult as FFXI, but still harder then most other MMOs currently), Pokemon Y (Finally returned to the series since Gen1 Red), Ingress (I have a love for ARGs since the first Portal secret update with the BBS number that contained screenshots of Portal 2)
    Typing all of this out makes me consider myself for Fantasy/Social/Explorer/Challenger, but what's your opinion?

    I think I'm kinda an explorer type, but in a weird way. I play think I just find ways to play game the opposite of what was intended. I played WoW and instead of going on quests I'd collect pets. Or in Minecraft I'd build up a huge fishing shack and just go fishing for a long time. In Skyrim I'd climb up mountains just to get the best view of the sunset. Things like that.

I want games that just plain fun. Games that give you the same sensation as going to a party or eating ice cream. This includes fast-paced puzzlers like Meteos or the new Tetrises, or games that are simply a blast to play, like all Kirby games, Smash Brothers, Mario Kart or pinball. Idk what you'd call this time. Fun-Lover maybe. Hedonistic gamer? Idk. But it's essentially what casual gamers are, I suppose, although I'm not particularly casual. My Favorite game of all times is Okami for the Ps2 which got a remastered version for Ps3. I dont know how to explain it, but i just love the world of the game. I even made a college project on it, which i learned a lot about the game and it even made me love more. Its not just phantasy in the game. The developers of the game, a company called Clover Studio did an awesome research in Ancient Japan and all its Legends, Mysteries, Mythologies and implemented it into the game. And it is wesome to run arround controlling Amaterasu. If you played it well, and explored it, it can easily make on a 50~60 hours of pure enjoyment in the game, and a little frustration because some bosses and tasks are a little hard. This is definately a game that everyone should play once. Anywyas, what category Okami fits more? I think Explorer. Just making sure haha.

    • @vinicius_nunes
      @vinicius_nunes 8 лет назад

      ***** Its like i said, Okami is a the best game to me. I actually liked the story of the game, since they "tried" to use some of ancient japan legends to construct a story arround as many as they could of them. The art style of Okami is the best part in the game because it is intentionally like that since they did it to transmit those times way of telling story using a method called Emaki/Emakimono which was that "weird" painting feeling we have with the animations, and also Amaterasu powers are based in that too, since we use a brush and that roll paper. The animation it self is called Cell Shading. If you reserach a little you can clearly see a big diference in a game made to look cartoon and what Okami is.
