“Cool guy" Paul Faust (one of the heads of the Five Families) was played by Paul Faust. He was not an actor, just a friend of Paul Leiberstein who had visited the set and made an impression on the writers. They wrote the character based on him but had no intention of casting him until they couldn’t cast the part. While he was in New York City, the day prior to filming started, the Office staff called him up, had him read lines into a camera, gave him the part, and flew him to L.A.
Pam's landlady looked like a female version of Michael Scott, they had the same color hair and eyes and cute but slightly exaggerated facial features. Pam basically set him up with himself.

Watching it again, i think they felt like jim and pam was such a big win for the audience that they needed to scale it back with the rest of the cast having a downer season or else the whole show would feel stakes-less and saccharin.
