THE WORST MUSIC YOU HAVE TO HEAR

- Outsider Music is a genre you've probably never heard of, but it includes Frank Zappa's and Kurt Cobain's favourite artists. Frank Zappa went so far as to call one band "better than the Beatles". It also consists entirely of incompetent artists, a lot of which don't know how to play instruments. This makes it probably the most unique and immediately recognizable genre. Notable artists in outsider music include: Brian Wilson (specifically during his breakdown), Tiny Tim, Daniel Johnston, Wesley Willis, BJ Snowden, and the Shaggs. Outsider Music was popularized in the 1990s because of the book Songs in the Key of Z.
They all have unique and fascinating stories, but in this video I primarily focus on the Shaggs, and Daniel Johnston, and how their music has impacted my own approach to music, as a beginner guitarists, and why I think I might unfortunately (or fortunately) fall into the outsider music genre. Their music has impacted many, and been covered by artists including: Lana Del Rey, Beck, Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, and more. Although the two can both be classified as outsider music, I think the artist both bring entirely different, yet equally beautiful things to the table. Maybe not equally.... but still both beautiful.
The Shaggs most famous songs include: my pal foot foot, and halloween. Daniel Johnston's most famous songs include: true love will find you in the end, some things last a long time, walking the cow, and story of an artist.
The shaggs can also be classified as garage rock, and proto punk, while Daniel Johnston can be classified as lofi and avant pop. Lofi music and outsider music are actually known to share a lot of similarities. So i guess before the days of 24/7 lofi hip hop chill beats to study to, people might have instead opted to listen to 24/7 daniel johnsten to study to. Just a thought.
Strangely, all of these artists seem to have received prominent followings in Canada. Not sure what that says about Canadians. Regardless, I'm still proud of my Canadian heritage. Perhaps even more proud than ever before. Perhaps not.
Alright, enjoy my video on the Shaggs, Daniel Johnston, Wesley Willis, Bj Snowden, and outsider music as a genre. If you're an aspiring musician, or just a person who enjoys music in general, I think you will greatly benefit from this video.

When I saw the title of this video and that you had Daniel Johnston in the thumbnail I was afraid that you would make fun of his music, so this video was a great surprise! His life is remarkable and also tragic. The documentary 'The Devil and Daniel Johnston' is how I found out about him. His father tells a story that they one time were flying together in a small plane, and Daniel turned off the engine and threw the keys out the window. The father crashed the plane in a tree and they survived.
Holy shit that’s actually insane, why’d he do that though? Was he aware of the dangers
ProMrLecoq01 Daniel at the time thought it was a good thing. Like he said in the video, he was in and out of mental hospitals, and he took meds to make him better. Daniel and his father flew to a music awards show in Austin where Daniel was supposed to preform. Knowing this prior, Daniel stoped taking his meds to give a more real performance to the people. Then when the show was done they left it and flew away. Daniel was reading a casper comic with them parachuting out of a plane, so he threw the keys out the plane and they crashed the plane.
Eric G. I just don’t understand how that idea would even cross his mind, but that also shows what kind of man he is
ProMrLecoq01 he had sczophienra
RIP Daniel Johnston
Don’t diss Daniel Johnston, he’s unironically good. Wesley Willis rules too.
My boys in heaven now
Daniel Johnston is seriously awesome. His Wikipedia page is definitely a sad one. I find his music to be super honest
Hes definitely my favourite aritst atm! Hes kinda changed how I view writing music
Redlight Blue Daniel Johnston is arguably the greatest lyricist in history, there isn't a song of his that doesn't make me want to cry, unreal genius
Rip Daniel Johnston
His music is so sad and he was actually one of the artists that influenced me to give music a try
I'd say that Daniel Johnson is actually pretty good, he played in time and sung in tune, and you can hear the sincerity. I have to check his works out
He is amazing
Absolutely very talented individual but Barry bathed in his mental concerns so while some songs are really profound I find others to be a highly unaccessible
RIP Daniel Johnston

"To play a wrong note is insignificant, to play without passion is inexcusable"
Ludwig van Beethoven
The thumbnail *exists*
Me: how could you say something so controversial yet so brave
It's worth noting that "The Shaggs" were more the victims of a disillusioned father, than artists who "really believe in, or are really passionate about their music". These girls essentially had the band foisted upon them and didn't have any initial desire to play instruments, or create music. This should be self-evident when listening to "Philosophy of the World", as it sounds exactly like what you'd expect if you forced children who had very little time on an instrument to create an album.
Do you still play guitar or just hold it now?
what's the difference
@@RedlightBlue If you don't know the difference, you just hold it.

Daniel Johnston is legitimately an artist with his own unique and very influential style. Wesley Willis and The Shaggs are funny and have their own unique charm, but they are nowhere near on the same level as Daniel Johnston. People like Kurt Cobain, Neil Young and John Lennon are more comparable to Daniel Johnston in my (subjective) opinion. Not on a technical skill level but like on a deeper artistic level.
How do you mean?
Rest In peice Daniel Johnston when I came across his music it changed my life he is one of my favorite artist ever
Me too. I am a big fan of music of all sorts, but nothing has affected me in the same way as Daniels music does.
Came back to say R.I.P Daniel 😔
:(
Daniel Johnston is my favorite songwriter and probably my favorite musician ever
name checks out
Dude i stopped playing but started again after watching you.
If you enjoy it then do it. People say a lot of reasons why they play, but, the most important one is how it makes you feel.
Dude that's awesome :) I wont give up if you dont give up
The joy is in playing. If it's good it's good. If it's mediocre it's still good. Art is subjective. And no matter how good or bad you are, you'll get lovers and haters.
Your sincerity has made my day. Thanks.
Well, we'd like to see you playing again, it's not particularly bad. A tuned guitar would be preferable, though
lmao dw i'll try again.. no promises on the tuning
Also, a better amp would also help... But that would cost money@@RedlightBlue
@@RedlightBlue For God's sake no, sort out the tuning. Guitar is hard, but tuning is easy nowadays. Why make a bad impression just because of something that could be easily fixed?
If you can spare $50 I'd invest in a TC Polytune Clip www.amazon.com/TC-Electronic-966111001-PolyTune-Clip/dp/B00ZU4G0ZK/ : it's very well reviewed and it has all kinds of convenient features like allowing you to check the tuning on all your strings at once. But there are many decent tuners including a number of free phone apps.
Always finish a string by tuning up rather than down: if you finish by tuning down the pitch is more likely to slip down again. If you overshoot when tuning up, tune down by a good bit then tune up again.
For similar reasons, after you've got a string in tune, give it a couple of good hard yanks sideways, and if its pitch has dropped tune it up again.
If you're getting some sticking in the nut you can lubricate a nut slot by using graphite. Graphite's just pencil lead, so you can literally just butter up the inside of a nut slot using the sides of a pencil nib to lubricate the slot. Obviously a really bad nut slot might need more serious attention.
@@thewisebread3653 www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=611815 may be the best-value guitar amp in the US right now: a 15W Fender-style valve amp that's apparently pretty good (according to the reviews, I haven't used it myself) for $220. There's also a $110 5W practice-amp version: too small to gig with, but it would probably mic up fine for videos.
I have a 20 watt fender champion. It is so nice and has so many different tone and effect combinations. It also sounds very clean and very big which is uncommon for little amps. That is definitely a good bye imo.@@leocomerford
I really enjoyed Daniel Johnson’s music
same.
a lot
Really touching in a strange way.
lmao thats how i felt too
just like my uncle does
Hey I know you’re probably feeling discouraged since you haven’t posted in a month, but I love your content. And I’m so glad this video exists and you can tell you can really tell you had fun making this :)
Stay strong brother
This video is how I found out about Daniel Johnston and I can't thank you enough for that
Great video! I came across your channel trying to teach myself guitar, but you've gotten me to laugh and even appreciate some outsider music. Cool stuff Redlight Blue! Keep doing you, Bru!
Good on ya man! Keep on rocking and rolling I love your vids and guitar playing!!!
What a great dedication to them. I just learned that Daniel died last year.. Had no idea. Found this video, and started crying near the end. I hope to be like them too.
Absolutley love your channel, keep up the good work (and outstanding editing)! :)
love u, and ill try my best :)
Love your sense of humour so much man keep it up !
I’ve just started learning but don’t really no what to do so I’ve started learning the basic chords any tips ?
i'd say go to justinguitar, and do his entire beginner course. even when you feel like you've learned enough and can learn without him, just finish the main course!
Redlight Blue thanks I will look into it
I own music from all these artists . BJ is from my home town and she is one of the nicest people on the planet . I love all of them . R.I.P DJ
Dude your videos are getting so good, it’s awesome to see your channel grow. You definitely have the skill to make great content but also, comparing to what you’re saying about the outsiders musical style, your sincerity is in my opinion what makes the great content stand out. Keep it up!
P.s: I’m not comparing your musical skill or video making to those artists skills, you’re learning and getting better each day, just your sincere personality and how I think that makes it effective.
this means a lot man :) thank you :)
Finally a new video yaass! Im living for ur videos!
I'm living for you living for my videos
But remember, Zappa was one of the greatest trolls humanity has ever known.
You deserve a lot more subscribers. Great video.
Thanks man :')
Man, you are inspirational, I mean, you show a very good side of playing the guitar and learning how to play it, I really appreciate what you do in your videos
So wholesome it may have filled the whole where my heart was!
But seriously, this is actually pretty cool, I actually wanna check out Daniel Johnston's music now! All of them actually, but he sounds like a super interesting person and I liked what little I heard here! On a side note, I actually wouldn't mind at all hearing some of your own originals if you ever feel up to it again! All jokes about your guitar skill aside, it was actually pretty cool to see you actually PLAY your guitar recently, but I legit really liked your originals. "I'm fine, no I'm OK" was really cool, and even that thing you made in ten minutes somehow! So I dunno, embrace the Outsiderness?
PS: Sorry if I rarely comment lately, been busy and not feeling too great, but I am still usually watching!
Love your videos man, keep doing what makes you happy
Just subscribed, don't know what I'm getting into...
I understand your vibe, I hope to see you play-
"Music is passion, music is hope, music is life ..."Daniela Villarreal -The Warning. Music is the thread that ties us all together as people. Great video !!
I forgot about Daniel Johnston for way too long.
Thanks for that, random yt'ber in my suggested feed.
I'll check out a couple more of your vids.
Interesting topic! I recently discovered some of this stuff too and it really changes your perspective on music.
Yay new vid! Nice vid!
:)
Man you can do anything you want with your music. Dedicated, refined practice will allow you to achieve anything
Great video. Daniel Johnston is one of my favourite artists, and I really dug your reaction to him.
Wow this video was great! Good job!
This video hit me harder than your previous, keep it up!
Ur playing wasn’t bad. Just not in tune
aha i appreciate that :) but i'm defs still hoping to improve... a lot
@@RedlightBlue Try GuitarTuna, it's a useful phone app
Great Scott! Weird songs! I love it!
I'm never confident about the way I play, nor am I very good at writing stuff, mainly my fault for being so stubborn about wanting to play jazz guitar, this has been a very touchy video and i love it, keep playing dude, it's all in the fun and love/passion for it.
Well made video! Have a nice time :D
Thank you, you too
bro this is so weird i literally couldn’t stop listening to daniel johnston yesterday you little psychic
After this video I'm really considering writing my own songs no matter how bad they could turn out. We gotta start somewhere, right?
What a gutsy thumbnail,good job
You're putting yourself out there as you're learning/practicing the craft, which is admirable. BJ Snowden is a really sweet lady and studied music at Berkley, most Johnston fans agree he's a talented keyboardist, Jandek is pretty self aware, etc. You can be really talented and still make bad music. I'm pretty sure my early music can be considered outsider music because I thought it was good when I put it out, but later found that was not the case. I don't think I started making good music until I was 22.
All joking aside...You sing and play the guitar really well. I wish I had a singing voice like you have. You've got a lot of amazing potential and I hope you don't get discouraged when the haters pick at you because you aren't perfect. Keep at it my dude!
i'm subscribing, and i'm prolly gonna start making videoes because of this. You are a quality human being, Redlight Blue and I am interested in what you have to say.
Man your the reason I learnt to play guitar, thanks so much!
I don’t think there’s a better content creator on RUclips. Thank you for existing
awesome video keep it up yoooo
thx dude :)
Why do you have some of my all time favorite albums in the thumbnail?
Hey not sure if you’ll see this, but I want to recommend Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart. I wouldn’t exactly consider it outsider music as he has many traditionally musical compositions, but the album Trout Mask Replica in particular is very bizarre and very in line with something like The Shaggs
It's the musical equivalent of naive art. Check out the work of Alfred Wallis who was a retired fisherman in St Ives. He painted on any fragments of wood or cardboard he had lying around in a childlike way. He was 'discovered' by Ben Nicholson and influenced a generation of artists.
God bless Daniel Johnston!
Music is a product of passion
Hey man I'd just like to say I'm new to your channel and I'm loving your it, I find your videos really funny, and I want to recommend two bands that are popular mainly in my country; The Shabs and Shortstraw they're really good so check them out
Nah dude I always say that if you pick up an instrument and accomplish what you want with it good for you. You are clearly doing and have a pretty darn awesome channel that’s plenty informative, your personality is better than any other RUclips guitarist, soon enough Jared Dines and Stevie T will be begging you to be in their videos
Subbed. You're a goof but you're affable and a good bloke
Aww that was my comment hahahahaha. Great video bro keep up the great work 👊
While you were mentioning the feedback from the video in which you played guitar I was playing(more like muting) *possibly* the worst barre chords . I hope this motivates you. And also, i’ve been playing for 5 months so maybe that’s why I kinda suck and actually think you’re doing a decent job, but who knows!
this does motivate me :) lets improve together and in a year come back to this comment and laugh when we can do probably 𝗻𝗼𝘁 the worst barre chords
Redlight Blue this goes straight on my list of things I wanna accomplish, thank u!
love this video! please keep playing guitar, dont let the haters tear you down
keep it going bro!
one day at a time
putting dj and the shags in the same column is a crime
Great video as always
I knew I couldn't play guitar 23 year ago when I started, and I'm still recording. Just be you.
Even though I don't create music, I create other forms of art (mainly writing and drawing) and recently, once I became less worried about popularity and numbers in social media, I feel that my extreme niche works satisfy me a whole lot more nowadays than when I was trying too hard to "wow" everyone around me.
So, in a way, this outsider music deal speaks to me to, because hey, as long as you are creating and you have a passion for it, that's what truly matters!
(except for the poor Shaggs who were forced to do stuff.......)
Dude dont let haters get you down, there is an army of supporters building up behid you ,inspired by you, if you believe it or not. Im realy proud of this community 🤗
I wouldn't consider Daniel Johnston outsider music at all... he was a great songwriter and everything he did came from the heart. It's genuinely relatable and beautiful
I think the definition of outsider music is that it’s unique and sounds like nothing you’ve ever heard before, and the lyrics are honest. So, that’s why I’d classify Daniel as an outsider musician.
@@yourmother__ idk, sounds like you're just describing experimental music. Outsider music is music that's enjoyed for a different reason than the artist intended it to be enjoyed, and Daniel Johnston clearly knew what kind of emotions he wanted to evoke with his music and I think it comes across perfectly, and most of his fans would agree. With something like the stooges, they obviously didn't write their music with the intention of being avant garde experimental rock, they were genuinely trying to write catchy pop songs, but their music is enjoyed nonetheless even though there's always that barrier between them and their fans
I see you are a bro, too...)
Great job, you've earned yourself a new subscriber.
:) Another Video YAY
That was your best video yet.
Were you in The Purge?
This is my new favorite video
Why didn't you mentioned Wild Man Fischer in this?
I really liked the last few things you said, good video man
This video was made before the discover of Herman Stone.
Hey dude, great video. I think the reason why I'm not successful is because I actually learned how to play guitar.
I want to see Wii Sports REsort gameplay
R.I.P. Daniel Johnston.
You should check out John Frusciante. He's the reason I started learning guitar. And to prove how bad I want you to listen to him, I just sat here and listened to a 30 second ad without skipping it ;)
Actually daniel johnston did know how to play the guitar (kinda) he new multiple basic chords he never played in tune tho thats what made it so interesting
Been playing for 25 years. You rock. Cheers from Québec.
I would rather listen to My Pal Foot Foot by The Shaggs on repeat forever than listen to any Jackson 5 song on repeat forever. My Pal Foot Foot envokes nostalgia and warmth. It has a weird happy feeling to it
Me and my friends love outsider music and we are forming a band.
Yes Daniel Johnston is in a class his own. The others can be quirky and amusing, but I'd never laugh at DJ songs, they're actually very good. They are simple, yet communicate something profound.
Your guitarplaying is better then mine
I dont believe you
@@RedlightBlue your guitar might have been a bit out of tune in that video, but the playing wasn't that bad.
