THE WORST MUSIC YOU HAVE TO HEAR

  • Outsider Music is a genre you've probably never heard of, but it includes Frank Zappa's and Kurt Cobain's favourite artists. Frank Zappa went so far as to call one band "better than the Beatles". It also consists entirely of incompetent artists, a lot of which don't know how to play instruments. This makes it probably the most unique and immediately recognizable genre. Notable artists in outsider music include: Brian Wilson (specifically during his breakdown), Tiny Tim, Daniel Johnston, Wesley Willis, BJ Snowden, and the Shaggs. Outsider Music was popularized in the 1990s because of the book Songs in the Key of Z.
    They all have unique and fascinating stories, but in this video I primarily focus on the Shaggs, and Daniel Johnston, and how their music has impacted my own approach to music, as a beginner guitarists, and why I think I might unfortunately (or fortunately) fall into the outsider music genre. Their music has impacted many, and been covered by artists including: Lana Del Rey, Beck, Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, and more. Although the two can both be classified as outsider music, I think the artist both bring entirely different, yet equally beautiful things to the table. Maybe not equally.... but still both beautiful.
    The Shaggs most famous songs include: my pal foot foot, and halloween. Daniel Johnston's most famous songs include: true love will find you in the end, some things last a long time, walking the cow, and story of an artist.
    The shaggs can also be classified as garage rock, and proto punk, while Daniel Johnston can be classified as lofi and avant pop. Lofi music and outsider music are actually known to share a lot of similarities. So i guess before the days of 24/7 lofi hip hop chill beats to study to, people might have instead opted to listen to 24/7 daniel johnsten to study to. Just a thought.
    Strangely, all of these artists seem to have received prominent followings in Canada. Not sure what that says about Canadians. Regardless, I'm still proud of my Canadian heritage. Perhaps even more proud than ever before. Perhaps not.
    Alright, enjoy my video on the Shaggs, Daniel Johnston, Wesley Willis, Bj Snowden, and outsider music as a genre. If you're an aspiring musician, or just a person who enjoys music in general, I think you will greatly benefit from this video.

    When I saw the title of this video and that you had Daniel Johnston in the thumbnail I was afraid that you would make fun of his music, so this video was a great surprise! His life is remarkable and also tragic. The documentary 'The Devil and Daniel Johnston' is how I found out about him. His father tells a story that they one time were flying together in a small plane, and Daniel turned off the engine and threw the keys out the window. The father crashed the plane in a tree and they survived.

      ProMrLecoq01 Daniel at the time thought it was a good thing. Like he said in the video, he was in and out of mental hospitals, and he took meds to make him better. Daniel and his father flew to a music awards show in Austin where Daniel was supposed to preform. Knowing this prior, Daniel stoped taking his meds to give a more real performance to the people. Then when the show was done they left it and flew away. Daniel was reading a casper comic with them parachuting out of a plane, so he threw the keys out the plane and they crashed the plane.

    It's worth noting that "The Shaggs" were more the victims of a disillusioned father, than artists who "really believe in, or are really passionate about their music". These girls essentially had the band foisted upon them and didn't have any initial desire to play instruments, or create music. This should be self-evident when listening to "Philosophy of the World", as it sounds exactly like what you'd expect if you forced children who had very little time on an instrument to create an album.

    Daniel Johnston is legitimately an artist with his own unique and very influential style. Wesley Willis and The Shaggs are funny and have their own unique charm, but they are nowhere near on the same level as Daniel Johnston. People like Kurt Cobain, Neil Young and John Lennon are more comparable to Daniel Johnston in my (subjective) opinion. Not on a technical skill level but like on a deeper artistic level.

      @leocomerford 5 лет назад

      @@RedlightBlue For God's sake no, sort out the tuning. Guitar is hard, but tuning is easy nowadays. Why make a bad impression just because of something that could be easily fixed?
      If you can spare $50 I'd invest in a TC Polytune Clip www.amazon.com/TC-Electronic-966111001-PolyTune-Clip/dp/B00ZU4G0ZK/ : it's very well reviewed and it has all kinds of convenient features like allowing you to check the tuning on all your strings at once. But there are many decent tuners including a number of free phone apps.
      Always finish a string by tuning up rather than down: if you finish by tuning down the pitch is more likely to slip down again. If you overshoot when tuning up, tune down by a good bit then tune up again.
      For similar reasons, after you've got a string in tune, give it a couple of good hard yanks sideways, and if its pitch has dropped tune it up again.
      If you're getting some sticking in the nut you can lubricate a nut slot by using graphite. Graphite's just pencil lead, so you can literally just butter up the inside of a nut slot using the sides of a pencil nib to lubricate the slot. Obviously a really bad nut slot might need more serious attention.

      @@thewisebread3653 www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=611815 may be the best-value guitar amp in the US right now: a 15W Fender-style valve amp that's apparently pretty good (according to the reviews, I haven't used it myself) for $220. There's also a $110 5W practice-amp version: too small to gig with, but it would probably mic up fine for videos.

    • @thewisebread3653

BJ Snowden is a really sweet lady and studied music at Berkley, most Johnston fans agree he's a talented keyboardist, Jandek is pretty self aware, etc. You can be really talented and still make bad music. • @isaiahromero9861
      @isaiahromero9861 2 года назад

      @@yourmother__ idk, sounds like you're just describing experimental music. Outsider music is music that's enjoyed for a different reason than the artist intended it to be enjoyed, and Daniel Johnston clearly knew what kind of emotions he wanted to evoke with his music and I think it comes across perfectly, and most of his fans would agree. With something like the stooges, they obviously didn't write their music with the intention of being avant garde experimental rock, they were genuinely trying to write catchy pop songs, but their music is enjoyed nonetheless even though there's always that barrier between them and their fans

    You should check out John Frusciante. He's the reason I started learning guitar. And to prove how bad I want you to listen to him, I just sat here and listened to a 30 second ad without skipping it ;)

    I would rather listen to My Pal Foot Foot by The Shaggs on repeat forever than listen to any Jackson 5 song on repeat forever. My Pal Foot Foot envokes nostalgia and warmth. It has a weird happy feeling to it

    Yes Daniel Johnston is in a class his own. The others can be quirky and amusing, but I'd never laugh at DJ songs, they're actually very good. They are simple, yet communicate something profound.
