I'm also from the Netherlands and I'm suprised to see these nice films, well done !!.. A few additions: The FT17 was primararly purchased to test the flooding of land in front of our defence lines. The Dutch Huzars also had about 36 Landsverk L180 and L181 armoured cars, build in Sweden. These cars defended airfields around The Hague and also performed some attacks around Nijkerk and Rotterdam-Delft. At last: Samoa is not a part of the Dutch East Indies. Thanx for this rare footage

In 1937, as the Dutch East Indies started to rethink their defence strategy, the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (K.N.I.L.) contacted the Vickers Company in Britain and bought two Vickers-Carden-Lloyd light tanks for trials. In 1938 they ordered a further 73 tanks of the 1936 Model which was mechanically similar to the Mark IV Light Tank but with a hexagonal turret and armament of a Mark II. They weighed about 5 tonnes, had a crew of two, and were armed with a single Vickers machine gun. The "Dutchman" had a simpler hull shape and was re-shaped at the rear to give more room internally. They had a 90 Meadows ST engine with a four speed synchromesh gearbox and armour was on a 12mm basis. Only 20 tanks arrived on Java before the outbreak of the Second World War in Europe, at which point Britain confiscated the 49 remaining tanks. They were taken into service with the British Army as the "Tank Light, Vickers Carden Lloyd, Model 1936". These were also designated as Light Tank Mark III, and nicknamed "Dutchmen". A number of these tanks were delivered to Greece. 3rd CLY (part of 2nd Armoured Division) had two of these tanks and 41 Mk VIb tanks on 1/10/1940. The 2nd Gloucestershire Hussars had 25 Mk VIb tanks and 33 "Dutchmen", by the end of September 1940.

    A Few corrections
The FT17 tank owned by the Dutch army was NOT used in combat. It was in storage and was not activated. Its use after the capitulation of mainland Netherlands is not know. It was also not recovered after liberation. It's possible the German army used the FT17 but there is no evidence that suggest this was its fate.
There was no cooperation between Germany and the Netherlands building or designing the Wilton-Fijenoord armoured cars. They used a Krupp chassis and engine which were available on the open market. Some of the improvised armour build in the Netherlands used GM chassis that doesn't mean the American government was cooperating in building them. There is no evidence that shows the Wilton-Fijenoord armoured car was used other then during the battle of Berlin and it is very unlikely it did. The vehicle was not armed when it was captured and obsolete or at least obsolescent at that time as well. The idea that the German army immediately press this thing into service during the, already in progress, invasion of Belgium is pure fantasy.
The carden loyds were not light tanks they were tankette's. A light tank is fully enclosed and turreted. A tankette is an open construction and lacks the turret.
The M39 was not the only armoured car with a cannon armament in Dutch inventory. The Landsverk L180 and L181 armoured cars had the same 3.7CM cannon. In fact the M39 used the exact same turret as the Landsverk armoured cars.
The M39 is also not really based an earlier prime mover it only shared the "TRADO" suspension system. The M39 had a fully welded monocoque and therefore was the first Dutch armoured car not to be based a civilian vehicle.
The Marmon Herrington tanks where not “given” to the Netherlands. They were bought. The tank was chosen as it was the only commercially available tank that the Dutch government had any hope of actually receiving.

  • @LeanderJobse
    @LeanderJobse 4 года назад +10

This video has so many inaccuracies, faults, and badly interpreted information, it is insane:
The FT was never known as the 'Renault FT-17 Schwarzlose', it was not built in 1927 but arrived in the Netherlands in that year. Only one was ordered, not 'several'. It was not used as a parade vehicle, it was used for training but only for a short time. The tank was not put to use in 1940, at the time it had no gun and no engine. What you're referring to is a trial from 1939 when the tank was used for the last time to demonstrate the anti-tank capabilities of the Dutch defensive lines. It has never been proven the vehicle was used by the Germans, given the absence of the engine, it was most likely scrapped during the war.
The Pantserwagen GMC is not a real armored car, its just a mock-up made with tin, wood, and canvas. I don't know where you get the 57 mm gun info from, but it was just an old naval 37 mm gun. It was indeed a training vehicle but only used in the Netherlands, not in the colonies. Furthermore, only one was made, not 8. The single-vehicle was dismantled in 1931.
3-5 Wijnman armored cars were made in 1932. Only 3 vehicles were operated by the army and only 1 saw some use during the May 1940 campaign.
GMC Pantserwagen Haarlem is not a name, it was just referred to as GMC. It actually preceded the Wijnman. Of this type, 3 were made in 1931. They were all dismantled in 1934.
Samoa was not one of the Dutch islands. Dutch Caribbean territory was commonly referred to as the 'West Indies'.
Two C.P.I.M. vehicles were made over the course of only one night. The Dutch weren't forced to build their own AFV's, it was just a private initiative from the oil refinery directorate to protect their refinery from the Venezuelan rebels. However, they were never actively used in battle. You state the armor to be 10 cm thick. I know for a fact that this comes from my article about the vehicle on tanksencyclopedia.com. I also know that I referred to the height the mudguards were above ground, not to the armor thickness, very bad source interpretation on your part. They were also quickly scrapped and never put in storage. In 1950, one of the Venezuelan rebels was assassinated, it wasn't the year the vehicles were scrapped... again very bad source interpretation.
The 3 Wilton-Fijenoord armored cars were built in 1933, not already in 1929. They were indeed ordered for use in the East Indies but performed badly. Two out of three were quickly sold to Brazil in 1935, together with two armored personnel carriers also made by Wilton-Fijenoord. The third was kept at the factory. by 1940 it was in storage at a Dutch army depot and never put into service. The Germans stored the vehicle as well and it was only used in 1945 to defend Berlin.
Of the DAF M39, 12 were made plus 1 prototype so 13 in total. Not as you quote '13 were made plus 1 or 2 prototypes', that is wrong.
The Dutch had 5 Carden-Loyd Mk.VI tankettes, 12 Landsverk 180, 12 Landsverk 181, and 2 Landsverk 180 command vehicles. The DAF M39 had the same turret as the Landsverks, these were also armed with a 37 mm gun, not as you quote with 'only machine guns'. The vehicles were indeed extensively used by the Germans but all were lost on the Eastern Front, none were used in Berlin.
Information on the Braat is okay, not to much wrong there. Noteworthy is that they were also used during the Indonesian war of independence, and that's also when the rail versions were created of which you show several pictures. One actually survives in an Indonesian museum.
The Stadswacht Overvalwagen is never referred to as Braat. As the name implies, it was not built for the army, but for the Stadswacht, a paramilitary organization of volunteers, not meant for frontline combat but for peacekeeping behind the lines.
In 1939, the CTLS was not yet produced, production for China only was initiated from 1941. Not 450, but 240 were produced for China. The armament consisted of 2-4 .30 cal Browning MG38BT tank machine guns, not a .30 cal and a .50 cal. The armor was not between 12-25 mm as you state, but 12.7 mm all-round. Their maximum speed was 50 km/h, but their cruising speed was only 35 km/h. A total of 474 tanks was produced, not 450. Some remained in service during the Indonesian Independence War. You fail to mention that 149 were operated by the Australian Army. of the MTLS only 125 were produced, not 200.
Vehicles you missed or skipped(mostly foreign designs):
Ehrhardt Potkachel improvised armored car (1924-1940)
    Carden-Loyd Mk.VI tankette
    Landsverk 180 & 181
    Alvis Straussler AC3D
    M3A1 White Scout Car
    Marmon Herrington Mk.III armored cars
I probably missed other faulty information, but to conclude, this video gives a very bad representation of Dutch (pre-)WW2 vehicles, I don't mind Jmantime making videos and I don't mind you guys watch it, but please take it with many grains of salt.

ok first of all, the FT-17 is just called FT. no -17 part.
I have never seen anything say the C.P.I.M. used lewis machine guns, not even the Tanks Encyclopedia article. Seems like you straight up made that one up. Also, 10mm is very good armor against rifle cartridges...
The first DAF M/39 was delivered in 1939, not 1938. I have never seen anything say it used Madsen machine guns. The best Panzer III the Germans had during the invasion was the Ausf. F with a maximum of only 30mm of armor, the best Panzer IV was the Ausf. D with a maximum of 35mm of armor, both being easily defeated with the Bofors gun.
Never seen anything say it served in Berlin, seems like you made up that part too. That's a lot of making up stuff.
the armament you are describing for the Braat Overvalwagen is for the SPAAG version of the vehicle.
The 37mm is on the marine variant, not AA
    The Marmon-Herrington CTLS-4TAC was armed with 3 x .30 cal machine guns, not 1 x .50 cal and 1 x .30 cal (Source: Stuart by Hunnicutt)
The Marmon-Herrington CTLS-4TAC was created after Pearl Harbor, it was not created because of USS Panay
The chinese ordered only 240 CTLS-4TAC tanks, not 450, and the order was cancelled after the chinese found that it could only be armed with .30 cal machine guns and nothing bigger
    Max speed was 50 km/h, cruising speed 35 km/h
474 CTLS-4TAC tanks were made, the article in the description even says this
Only 20 CTLS-4TAC tanks were successfully delivered to the dutch. the article in the description also legit says this.
The CTMS-1TB1 had only 3 crew
The Dutch in the Carribean only 31 CTMS-1TB1 tanks, the article in the description legit says so.
Even though the company that designed them also designed AA guns, I haven't seen anything that says the MTLS's 37mms were used for anti-air, not even the article you linked, and I've checked lots of sources (your speculation?)
Only 125 MTLS tanks were made, not 200 (again, the article in the description says this, you're using them right?)
Misc: you are missing some vehicles such as the Vickers tanks that the dutch received, I would definitely count those as "rare" and a few armoured cars too, but that's fine

Thank you for pointing out many of the issues I noticed. While I really appreciate Jmantime for finding the footage and making these videos. His research is not top notch (and can it be in all these foreign languages) and his pronunciation is at times... lacking. I seem to remember the first armoured car he mentioned was actually a German WWI armoured car interned in the Netherlands after the war. The second GMC is a version of the Wijmans (They reused the aurmoured body on at least two chassis). The admittedly modern DAF M39 armoured car did not knock out any German vehicles. At the outbreak of war they were not finished. One that was quickly equipped saw action against Fallschirmjäger in Holland. The only armoured vehicles that saw action against German vehicles (and aircraft) were the Swedish Landsverk M36 and M38 armoured cars. They Dutch Army also used a few Carden Lloyd tankettes for aerodrome protection. I am not aware of the Wilton-Fijenoord armoured cars being used in combat in the Netherlands at all. For all I know, they were all delivered to Brazil by then, but one or two were under construction at the Wilton Fijenoord yard in 1940 and that could account for the vehicle at the Rijksdag in 1945 (vehicles from a museum of captured armour were taken into use as a last ditch defence).
Armour in the Dutch East Indies also included a dozen Alvis Straussler armoured cars, 20 White armoured cars, two Vickers amphibian tanks and about a score of Vickers light tanks out of an order of 70+. To compensate for this lack, the British turned over about two scores of South African armoured cars, straight from the desert campaign. Of all the Marmon Herrington tanks, only seven CTLS ever reached operational status and were used in battle.
The small Dutch Army contingent fighting with the Allies since D-day operated Bren-carriers.

Yes. A postal vehicle that was converted into an improvised armored car in one night in 1929 had more armor on it than a Panther tank. Amazing! It also had a crew of 50 which came in handy for its duties as a clown car at the circus.

Oh? So the fact that Germany had complete air superiority (because the Dutch Air Force, like the country, was fucking tiny) had nothing to do with it? Or that the Heer (the German Army was NOT called the Wermacht, that was the name for ALL the German Armed Forces as a whole) was vast in comparison to the small Dutch Arm? What about the fact that the Netherlands is as flat as a Billiard table making it difficult to defend against a mechanised combined arms force? How about the fact that the population of the Netherlands was about 10% of that of Germany? So all of these had no effect on the fact that the Netherlands fell? It was just the tanks? Probably best if you think before you speak, lest you make yourself look like an idiot.

main reason that the dutch army was defeated within 5 days, was due to the fact that various cabinets refused to invest in a well-equipped and trained army during the interbellum period.
