Yeah i always have a delivery van with a trailer. Divide everything up into bags. The medical bag. Welding bag (in case i need to break into a facility). The tool bag with all the tools i could ever need. The road bag with all the food and tailoring equipment. And the car bag with the jack, air pump, spare car battery, spare tire. Etc.
FUN FACT : The Suture Needle Holder can be used in place of the Tweezers to pull glass shards and bullets off of you. New players can leave the tweezers behind.
@Omni0404 correct, but I'd rather carry 1 thing of crayons instead of 4 seperate writing utensils. Since they weight the same as 4 pens/pencils and is only 1 slot, it's better to my old organization lol.
I keep spare back packs in my trunk just in case I find a juicy loot spawn like a survivor home or a stocked garage. I play with LOTS of car mods so my main car is a ford bronco with lots of spots to carry bags full of loot it cuts down the length of loot runs and it helps me keep track of places since I can just loot a whole building and have it bagged up and ready to drop off at base
I love the RV and mod that lets you enter them. I get rid of all the seats (from inside the RV or bus- which doesn't get rid of them while driving only when entering the vehicle). Then I build lots of storage. Game lags out if I have hundreds in storage then drive by the mall lol
@@awitness4jehovah yeah I have a similar problem, downloaded a mod that ups the carry weight and bag capacity and it will just drop frames not a lot but like from 60 to 50 if I am stocked up. (tldr I hate PZs stupid time sink bullshit) I got it since well, the movement penalty on military bags is annoying and dumb, and I'm a working joe, not some youtuber with months of free time, so if a loot run takes like 10 hours, I mean shit man I gotta clock in at work in 4 hours and I have to go to the gym so it happens in 3 or I gotta play something else. I love PZ but the game is starting to get too fucking obsessed with realism and building mmo bullshit time sinks. I already HATED fishing since you just sit around hoping a fucking zombie doesn't spawn behind you while you are on your phone with the game at 4x speed to get some mid tier food source, and now these morons expect me to fucking play a mini game for a fucking small fish? FUCKING BLOW IT OUT YOUR ASS! I would rather crank up loot spawns and be a traveler trying out guns and eating out of cans while sleeping in my car than sit around hoping I grow or catch enough food to die of boredom or starve in some zombie infested shit hole with a butter knife and a saucepan waiting for winter to claim me. To me the fun part is the zombie killing the farming and character self care shit is cute but I mean I would rather fish, take care of myself and farm irl at that point.
Something neat about vehicles: You can place a Generator, or even those large Water Dispensers you find in office buildings in the front or back seats, even though they are over the seat's weight limit.
How it works is that if a single item overweights then seat capacity then you can put it on there. You can put generator or water coolers yes, but you can also fill a bag with more loot than what the seat can hold and as long as it is one bag you are good. (You will need to equip it to access the contents though)
@@noble7065 Yeah that's one of the mods I use because I consider it vanilla friendly and not advantageous to use. I can't stand mods that make things easier or let you carry *even more* stuff than vanilla - but the concept behind that mod is really sensible and belongs in the base game for sure.
I prefer starting with strong rather than organized. It has way better benefits as building strength is superrrrrr slow, better melee skills, and increases weight capacity 18-20 (depending on hunger)
Fair, I tend to take both but with organized it doubles what you can carry in fanny packs and increases inventory space in nearly all containers. Where with leveling up strength it's just your main inventory carry weight that goes up I believe. Which still works but you lose extra space in nearly all containers
This is why I find backpack attachment mods to be essential, I do a lot of hiking so hanging kit off my bag and body is a huge part of that, and feels a lot more realistic in terms of how much a human could haul.
The best items to hang on your belt is the hunting knife and hand axe, both useful survival tools, and solid back-up weapons in the off- chance your main weapon breaks. The hatchet can chop trees, and the hunting knife can carve branches into spears. The knife can also filet any fish you catch (possibly with the spear?) With these items yon can survive in the wilderness for quite some time. I put my hammer and screwdriver in the backpack. The pipewrench is better used for plumbing.
I also always pick organised. If I have 2 fanny packs 1 is for smoking and lighter and matches. + Around 20 nails and some medical pills (usually beta blockers) The second one is for spare bottle and can opener. I always carry a hammer on my right belt. For my bags I ALWAYS carry a extra bag. I also always carry 2 bandages and alcohol whipes and some spare weapon. This like the basic basic needs.... I carry any extra water in my bag and main inventory but I keep my fanny pack bottle for last. This means when I need to grab it I know I am low on water and probably head back or make a pit stop. (I also always pick high thirst so water goes fast) the 20 nails and hammer are just easy for boaring up a place quickly. Planks are somewhat easy to find but sometimes when you destroy a furnature you might not have enough nails. So around 20 will just always ensure I have enough if I need to board up something quickly... I also have in all my cars I drive some smokes and ligher/matches, can opener, empty gas can and water bottle in the glovebox. This makes it so I am always somewhat prepared when my car breaks down....
One thing that I personally do is keep the vehicle tools (wrenches, screwdriver, jack, pump) in a toolbox. Makes it a bit cumbersome to get them, since you need to take it out of the trunk to access it, but also keeps things organized.
Also, suture needle holder also works for removing glass like tweezers so you don't need both (not sure about removing bullets though, I don't play multiplayer)
Crayons are definitely an honourable mention. I prefer to just carry a single pen or pencil on me and ignore the eraser and other colours though. I don't do much map work, but it's nice to just be able to. Plus, when I've not bothered to pack a weapon (which is more often that with most people), the pen lets me break windows and clear broken glass. I'll admit I'm unusual for occasionally foregoing weapons.
Yeah crayons are awesome, I used to always carry a black pen, pencil, eraser, red pen AND a blue pen on me but then I found out that crayons can actually work as all the pen colors so you can just have that instead
I think your list is very good for longer/further trips but a tad overkill for smaller excursions. I would also recommend carrying coffee or tea bags as an emergency way of reducing fatigue.
Also spare bags for cases where you want to take a lot but also don’t want it to take all day or over encumber yourself then drop it all from your inventory when a zombie pops up
Vitamins do the same, you just need to chug more than once. Maybe a bit slower, but a lot lighter and don't reduce your thirst if you didn't prepare a beverage. You should also try to pop them BEFORE you get the tired moodle for better stamina management and to avoid getting exerted in the middle of a fight.
@@giacomomeluzzi280I usually pop a few vitamins throughout the day if I'm on a loot run, usually with my smokes and meals. That way you don't have to chug the whole bottle when you get tired.
Really love how you have your gear set up, I didn’t even know you could wear two Fanny packs! One thing I will say is playing a lot of CDDA made me really think and plan ahead when going out on expeditions or loot runs. I would wear a pack and only carry a bottle of water, rags, and a melee weapon. finding berries and bugs along the way to wherever I was walking to and taking shelter in sheds or houses. Getting a vehicle later on I also pack light, only taking a tire iron, a Jack, and a screw driver and if possible a gas can. In the late game I’ll add a wrench and tire pump in case any car troubles hit me on the road. I always packed for no more than two or three days away from home so I learned quickly to travel light, I might have to start traveling with more equipment loved how the video was laid out keep up the good work!
Firm disagree on your understanding of guns. If you want a pocket pistol, carry an M36 revolver and ammo in multiples of 5. It has a sound radius of 30 tiles and slightly better performance than an M9 at low stats due to slightly better base stats. The M9 should be used if you intend to be aggressive with guns, as it can rapidly magdump, but instead has a 50 tile range for sound. You will feel this difference in practice. A single round from the M36 will typically aggro a nearby building or two, which is easy to manage and ensures you do not pull more zombies than you can reasonably bring down with melee weapons. Or if you're already dealing with zombies, the M36 is unlikely to cause issues if you start shooting after backing up into an already cleared area. As someone who makes use of guns frequently and aggressively, understanding the sound profile and use case of every gun is important.
It's a lot better to play with mods, the quality of life ones are essential, and the gun and armor mods brings so much more fun and freedom when using guns. You can just attach a suppressor and boom. No more needing to choose which gun does the least amount of noise.
When I first started playing Zomboid, I would carry around a hammer and screwdriver as weapons, constantly wear a welding mask, and carry a welding torch. I was never unprepared to do some disassembly on-the-go!
I do mostly the same as in the video (glad I'm not the only one who carries so much stuff!) but I put bandages in my main inventory since it makes the interaction significantly faster. This is because a neck wound ends your run unless you bandage it immediately, and reducing the time it takes, even just a little, can make the difference between life and death.
I also always carry some light food for emergencies and the torch is always in the backpack with a spare battery. You usually don't need it, but being stuck outside at night, especially during winter or a thunderstorm REALLY SUCKS if you don't have a good source of light and you'll be happy you brought it when it happens. Also a spare for my secondaries, usually a hunting kife and a handaxe or baton if I'm playing vanilla, or a billhook if I'm playing with Shark's melee weapons, because sometimes a fight will go on longer than you expected and I don't want to be forced to retreat because I'm out of weapons. Maybe not strictly necessary, but on large populations playthrough it helps a lot.
I also recommend having 1-2 spears in the backpack (Unless it is already your weapon of choice). It can dispatch zombies very effectively even when exausted. Saved my ass in multiple occasions.
I like using medkits, toolboxes, lunchboxes, etc. to organize my supplies. Not just for the roleplay of it, but it can speed up time pulling things out of containers, but because your character is only pulling out the box/kit/bag instead of every item, also just so I don't need to search for items as much myself if they are organized in sub-containers of like items.
Fanny pack 1: Smokes(50~), lighter, mags(filled) Fanny pack 2: Medical + Tools - if items have duplicate use like tweezers and Suture Needle Holder, take Suture Needle Holder. I don’t take Alcohol wipes because as along as the bandage/rag is sterilized you don’t need it. I keep 1 suture needle, 1 needle and a full thread, in emergencies with friends I use the suture needle. Hammer, screwdriver, pen, and can opener are all you need all other tools should be left at home or be left in a tool box. Backpack: 3 bottles of water (I run high thirst) and a can or two of food incase loot is bad, or need emergency food. I carry one pistol for when I want to goof off.
Fanny pack 1: medical supplies -bandages -sterilized bandages -needle, thread (for less serious deep wounds) -suture needle holder -suture neeedles (for serious deep wounds) -alcohol wipes -adhesive bandages (for a temporary fix where a bandage would take too long) Fanny 2: writing supplies + bullets Backpack: spare crowbar/axe + a roast + screwdriver/scissor/saw Main inventory: 2 water bottles (move to backpack when empty)+ stuff on your belt(usually a hammer + wrench) + double holster Car: Glovebox : flashlight + extra battery + non perishable food + water bottle Trunk: sledgehammer maybe if u know youll need it, kinda heavy tho. Lug wrench+jack
I tend to only bring sterilized bandages and a couple suture needles when it comes to medical supplies. I don’t bring a can opener and I leave that at my base. I tend to eat before I go on runs so I don’t have to worry about eating when I am on a run. I also bring a metal sheet, blow torch, propane tank and a welding mask so I can repair the hood of my car in order to avoid engine damage. I also like to have it if I plan leveling my metalwork skill by dismantling tubs and wrecked cars. I leave the generator and battery charger at home and instead bring an extra battery. Saves you a lot of space and it’s quicker to replace a battery than to charge it. I never bring guns with me unless I plan on using it to lure a horde away from an area by shooting far away and circling back to where I want to loot. I always have a weapon on my back and at least one backup weapon in my belt. I try to keep blunt weapons as to avoid damaging any clothing that zombies have that I might want.
If you have a vest of some type (foreman, hunting) you could keep your water bottle there to stretch out your usage just a little. In a free moment (you don't even have to stop walking) simply move the bottle to inventory, and your survivor will automatically take a drink if they need to. Simply move it back a second later and you're done and don't have to waste encumbrance.
Agreed with each and every item in this video, they're essential. The fact you can wear 2 fanny packs at once actually blew my mind: I knew there's on option on how to wear it on you, but I've never thought of even trying to wear 2 at once lol
Trowel/hand fork + saucepan. If things go extremely wrong and you end up injured and having to flee in a random direction for some reason, you can dig for worms to eat and collect rainwater to drink.
I can recommend that you put the generator on the passenger seat (only in a 4+ seat car) as it is crucial to be able to exit the car on the other side in a bad moment. The generator is weighing 40, and car seats are typically only 26 carry space, but it works anyway, and you get 1,5 the effect of the carry space of the seat.
Right on. This is very similar to my strats only I didn't know you could wear 2 fanny packs haha. My brain just instinctually figured that if you already have one on then that was it. No more fanny packs for you haha. I never even considered trying to wear a second one until watching this. Thanks.
This is true for vanilla solo however MOST public PVP-PVE severs run the “common sense mod”. Since common sense is so common when playing online ditch the can opener as a screwdriver works multi-purpose. Also a crowbar becomes a must have primary weapon/tool because it can pry open windows/doors/garages/cars without damaging them. Last but not least because flashlights can be placed on a belt it is always best to carry one, because when you need it and don’t have it you will wish you did.
You don't need alcohol wipes if you use sterilized bandages and you don't need tweezers if you have a suture needle holder as they can also be used to remove lodged glass/bullets. Also, there's no reason to carry a needle and thread if you are carrying a couple suture needles. My first-aid fanny pack is always as follows: Painkillers, sleeping tablets, sterilized bandage x8, suture needle x2, suture needle holder, vitamins x2. Vitamins are very important when unable to find a bed or it isn't safe to sleep, they can completely get rid of a 'ridiculously tired' moodle. Being tired can easily get you killed. Additional tips: Only use adhesive bandages as a last resort, they're terrible. There is no need for antibiotics if you have sterilized bandages or alcohol wipes. Alcohol wipes are really good if you don't have sterilized bandages. You can make sterilized bandages without rubbing alcohol/bourbon by placing ripped sheets/bandages in water and then boiling it.
almost the same but with moods so brita armors and bags instead of those tiny ones. it lets me take all of my essentials in one of them. (they have 8 size) + I tend to play with dynamic upgrades to bags, so depending on what I find +1,+2,+3 or +4 to that size. that gives me 2 empty bags for each run I do, so I ususally make one of them a critical bag, and biggest one is assorted junk. "critical" bag is most often perishable food, but tools, or anything else that was "goal" of my scav, is the name of the game. yes those upgrades are a bit OP, but non-cloth are hard to find, so it feels like meaningful progression for your effort.
I just carry the absolute essential on my person: bandages, medicine, water and weapons. Anything else, like tools(wrench, crowbar, axe, sledgehammer and hammer, fuel container), extra water and an emergency shotgun they always stay on my car but it all depends on what kind of expedition i do, i just divide them between exploration, cleaning and looting run and carry the appropriate equipment for each
Nice video. Should be helpful for trying to survive 100 days. I always struggle in games with how much of a pack rat I am so having a list is much needed!
i usually carry a spare duffel bag when looting. i put whatever i loot in it and drop it off in my car or if shit hits the fan, i drop on the ground, kill/evade zeds, then come back for the loot.
A fanny pack for small essentials, I can't believe I hadn't thought of that sooner. Usually I just keep it all in my military bag - it's a little tough to sort out that clutter at times.
2:39 You're missing one of the most important first aid items, 1 lemongrass. Especially with weak stomach. You'll be wishing you had one when you accidentally click to drink the pot of rotten soup instead of pour it out!
If im not mistaken, having a first aid kit in your bag is a waste of space. You wont be able to access its contents without first equiping it in one of your hands, so you may as well just put whatevers in there in your bag. The only benefit i can think of is organizing your items, otherwise you are just adding the weight of the container with no use.
I personally like to carry a sledgehammer in the car's glove box, and when I'm going to explore a dangerous place I carry it with me in my backpack, incase of getting stuck in a place full of zombies and I need to escape
Thought at first you were saying that you’d use the sledge to kill those zombies but good thing you use it for the right thing, I carry one in my glovebox as well. Super useful
I never carry any gun because, as you said, they cause more problems than they solve. I have hammer and screwdriver on my belt with usually a machete in my main hand. Like you, I use fanny packs for both meds and misc essentials, and only have the bottle of water in my main inventory(my 'pockets').
I also like to keep a rope/sheet rope and some nails. Not only will the nails/rope get you out of tall buildings full of zombies but if you need an improvise weapon in early stages when you have not the best gear it can help. Also one thing of ducktape
Didn't even realise you could get those smaller bags, then again I've yet to live long enough to find one lol. Still cool to see videos like this, learning a lot
I dont agree its kinda subjective what u should carry with you depending on ur settings and also traits, style of playing can also be factor but i do agree that everything listed is useful.
Solid video. Only thing I would add is I found it really handy if your using an axe or baseball bat to pack wood glue or duck tape. Since using wood glue on a never repaired axe is like carrying a spare for a fraction of the weight.
Pretty good. Id add i typically take the smoker trait so these get put in a fanny pack. Beyond that I carry 2 things of non-perishable food with me incase I get caught out and have to spend half a day getting away from some zombies. You mentioned caring that in your car and that's probably fine but if things go bad better to have it on you
Unless you roleplay some items in this list seem redundant. No holsters or mags. Handguns can't solve problems. I keep extra stuff in the trunk and switch tool / extra weapopn / empty bag if its clearing or salvage/scavenge run. Also having several empty bags helps so you can dump the whole bag after scavenge run in the trunk or seat, not every single item.
Guns can be useful even at lower skills, at least as noisemakers. The D-E pistol weighs just 1.5 (0.51 when equipped) and the noise attracts zombies out to about 70 tiles (which is equal to rifles). Only the Magnum (which weighs 2.0 or 0.66 equipped) and shotguns are better noise-makers. As for when to use those noisemakers, you could for example start shooting in the west side of the mall, run out and around the building, and sneak into the east side instead. Most of the zomboids will be in the west so you can face fewer zomboids while you're looting. Alternatively, you can light a fire and start shooting to potentially incinerate a thousand zomboids over the course of a day.
Yeah smoker is free points. From what I see, litterally everyone just keep smoking if they have smoker but here’s a pro tip if you’re able to survive long, you can just not smoke for 30 in game days and you’ll get rid of the trait
I tend to keep a duffel bag setup as a bug out bag with: [First Aide Kit: 5 Sterilized bandages, 5 Sterilized Rags, 1 Alcohol Wipes, 1 Painkillers, 1 Beta Blockers, 1 Antibiotics, 2 Suture Needle, 2 Suture Needle Holder, 1 Tweezers], a [Bug Out Tools(Sewing Kit renamed):1 Hammer, 1 Saw/Garden Saw(replace with Saw at earliest chance), 1 Screwdriver, 1 Can Opener, 1 Hand Torch] 1 Toys-R-Mine Walkie Talkie, 1 [Bug Out Misc(Sewing Kit renamed):1 Batteries, 30 Cigarettes, 2 Lighters, 1 Bath Towel, 1 Earbuds, 1 Saucepan, 1 Box of Nails, 1 Water Bottle(Gasoline)] 1 Tent Kit, 1 [Gun Case: M36 Revolver(Loaded), 1 .38 Special Rounds Box (30 Rounds)], 1 Crowbar/Nightstick, 1 [Sustain Satchel: 3 Bottled Water, 2 Cereal, 3 Chips/Chocolate, 3 Beef Jerky, 1 Coffee]. Each [] is either a Satchel for Food/Drink, Gun Case(Small), Sewing Kit or First Aide Kit filled with the listed items. Anyway i tend to keep that duffel bag in a car or on my character in the event a grocery store run turns into a horde mobbing...
I have a mission truck with all of the same stuff and a lootin' truck with nothing. Usually, I'll clear something out with the mission truck, then go back for the goods.
@@MrHrannsifair but that wouldn’t work in emergencies, a lot of times you will get dirty rags from those socks as well and you’d have to clean them first after already spending time to rip the socks and then you gotta start crafting and then you gotta place the sheet rope
I like to usually have my screwdriver on my belt for easy disassembling and still a bit of weight reduction. My second small weapon usually being a hammer backup weapon.
Yeah I'm screwdriver+hammer when it comes to my belt. I end up being the group carpenter during MP, and since I usually main a fireaxe I don't really need a 1H weapon.
My backpack's contents when I about to go out for fishing: fishing rod, baits, axe, matches, spear, knife, few food and water bottle. Me, 5 minutes later: **bring the entire items from my base to the car, in case of unexpected emergency**
This is why I love trailers. I keep those excursion supplies in the trunk, and reserve the trailer for loot runs. Inventory/bag is for stuff you might need immediately in an emergency. Glovebox/trunk is for stuff you might need right after the emergency. Everything else can wait until I get home.
biggest thing you missed is a crowbar. useful for moving furniture, prying open windows and barricades, and as a backup weapon if your axe breaks. I typically like having either an axe or machete as my secondary "fuck it we ball" and a crowbar as my primary if im fighting andi want to preserve the zombie's clothing: especially for firefighters or police zombies.
What I do is Backpack is empty and I fill it as I loot Fannypack1 has all medical supplies I need minus antibiotics as I only need to take those when I get back to base Fanyback2 has pencil, rubber, can opener, lighter and all the cigarettes I can fit In my main inventory I have a bottle of water, main weapon (usually a axe, machete, katana, crowbar) a hammer as my secondary weapon also is full for dismantling locked door as I always find screwdrivers so no point in carrying one
I feel like fanny packs are useless, they don't provide enough weight reduction to warrant carrying them about. You'll be weighed down far more with a fanny pack full of items than if you just stuck those items in a backpack.
I tend to only use them for keeping things organized and so I can easily see whats in my backpack without having to look through all the essentials. The weight reduction is pretty stupid but I usually take strong and other points into strength, so it's not a huge issue on most my playthroughs
Fanny packs are useful for keeping items seperate from your backpack, particularly items that you *do not* want to drop. The items I carry in my fanny packs are specifically chosen so that I, as a nomad, can survive just fine even if the bag on my back were to disappear completely. Without a car, and without a base. To that end my back fanny pack is always the exact same: scissors, needle, bowl, lighter, spoon, pancake mix, beef jerky/cereal/jam/peanut butter. With the remaining 0.1 space I'll throw in a juice box, teabag, gravy mix, sunflower seeds, or something like that depending on what's available, or what I find first. My front fanny pack always varies depending on what exactly I'm doing, but normally that one acts as a tool belt. When I'm out killing it's my ammo pouch; when I'm building it holds my hammer, saw, and nails; and when I'm scouting or travelling it'll act as an extension to my essentials pouch. To that end, I might carry baking soda, butter, flour, a baking tray/muffin tray/baking pan, cocoa powder, boullion cubes, etc. Otherwise I'll carry similar items but with an empty cooking pot and spare water bottle, for the purposes of extended travel. The remaining 0.3 weight will be taken up by anything from pancake mix and beef jerky, to baking soda (if I'm carry flour - in which case I might also carry sugar, salt, and/or butter), to the few spare medical supplies I'll ever carry - painkillers or beta blockers. Could also be I take a full bourbon bottle (with bourbon in it) and an empty cooking pot, and use the spare space for beef jerky, cereal, pancake mix, etc. There's plenty of crap you can throw in the front pouch since it's really just there to fill out your needs.
I want to carry a long weapon like an Axe or a Baseball Bat on my back, but I just always go the "Short melee weapon on belt, pistol in holster, shotgun/rifle on my back." route.
I play with the darkness falls mod with pitch black darkness. Sleeping pills are my #1 carry. There's no faster way to die than going out at night in an apocalypse full of sprinters.
fun fact I figured out recently - you can put certain small containers, such as first aid kits, inside larger containers (like backpacks) and the encumbrance reduction stacks. characters can use items from inside these containers for any tasks as well, they just take a bit longer to unpack and repack so rather than carrying all your first aid supplies in a fanny pack, you can put some of the ones that you'll be slowing down and stopping to use anyway, like suture needles and such, in something like that
Granola bars. I always, always forget to pack food when I go on a mass zombie cull, and you can be there all day rounding them up and putting them down. Had a lot of these that would have been cut short if it wasn't for my emergency fanny pack granola bar.
instead of a pistol saw off the barrel of the shotgun and also the buttstock ( which i think is doable in vanilla - alto i play vanilla firearms expanded) without much impact to it's performance making able to put the shotgun in the holster slot giving it a massive boost in usability without having to hog your main "back" slot
I have a meds fanny pack and an "artsy" fanny pack with pens, pencil, rubber and scissors (and whatever the hell I throw in there) and I tend to always have a gun on me because I enjoy the chaos
The tweezers are completely unnecessary. The suture needle holder acts as tweezers. Vitamins are useless. Taking the whole bottle gives you like 2 mins of extra energy. Suture needle might be slightly better, but I rarely get deep wounds. I would swap it for a second thread. Also I would carry 4 or 5 bandages, 2 water bottles (or 4 if you choose high thirst trait), a knife, two different colored pens, and a piece of paper for notes. Also, carrying both matches and a lighter just makes your inventory list longer.
This is good food for thought for new players, but I definitely don't agree that this gigantic list of stuff should be carried at all times. No, not by a long shot. It is good to organize things into certain kits for certain jobs and keep them at varying levels of accessibility, but you can get by on way, way less. It's also somewhat situational at least, and you left out a small amount of nails, which if a hammer is around somewhere is really powerful (as it enables you to always escape from an upper story of a building if caught there, but even that is situational--it's mostly for rapid basic fortification in the field with a few random planks you found).
Nice post. It's interesting to see how others think about the game. But honestly, there's a lot I do differently. Here are some thoughts: 1. Guns are good (I play vanilla, btw). If you don't think so, I fear you're not going to survive winter. You can clear entire areas with either shotgun or, to a lesser extent, the M14 or M16 - just carry lots of ammo, like 150+ shells at a time (hint - start with a sawed-off JS-2000. It gives you 100% accuracy even with Aim level 1 for some reason). This leaves you free to ransack whatever you've just cleared at will and the noise is actually good as it activates every enemy in the area preventing any "sleeping" Zeds from hiding and getting the drop on you while you loot away. Carry the M9 (or 1911 or something with sound radius 50 or below) as a sidearm in your holster (as you correctly point out). 2. Fanny packs are for old lady tourists to make sure everyone knows they are old lady tourists. Backpacks have significantly better weight reduction. Ditch the fanny packs, put your essentials in your main backpack, and carry a second backpack in your offhand to store loot while ransacking. Use a top notch one-handed melee weapon (eg machete) or your sidearm in your primary hand as you loot to take care of any remaining Zeds that you didn't blow away in your kill-crazy rampage. Oh yeah, don't forget to disassemble all digital watches in the piles of Zed corpses. You'll need the scrap electronics to fix your generators. Another key bonus to shotgunning your way through 100s of Zeds. 3. Speaking of essentials, once you bite the bullet and decide to use your main backpack as your carryall, you can carry your shotgun, your ammo, your propane torch and mask (to grind metalworking), some food if you don't want to forage, and the items you had in your fanny packs with maybe a couple of tweaks (using the backpack now frees you up to add medical supplies like a plantain/garlic poultice, for instance). 4. Don't use a pipe wrench as a weapon (except maybe on day one). But don't let it be ruined! Save it for plumbing your sink and washing machine etc when water goes out. Use a crowbar as your primary two-handed melee weapon (along with a machete as your primary one-handed). Kill all packs of Zeds under five with the crowbar to save ammo. Choose your loot sites carefully as ammo doesn't grow on trees, but once you pick a site, blast away! Use this strat if you want to survive years, not days or months. Happy hunting.
What i carry over that: A box of cereal as emergency food, it weighs very little yet has a substantial amount of calories Soap to wash yourself with less water Radio to listen for weather forecasts Some kind of short blade weapon on the belt for emergencies Crowbar to pop open barricaded windows What I do NOT carry from those: Lighter and matches, there is never a need to randomly make a fire and i don't use molotovs Hammer and saw, i never have the need to disassemble anything at a random time Axe and wrench for obvious reasons Generator (it's literally 40 encumburance, just carry more gas if you really need it) Car battery charger for obvious reasons
though I agree mostly of what you stated, but as a person who has 300+ hrs this is what I disagree. 1. Lighter or matches. Who's really gonna carry molotovs to the trip to the gas station?(I do) *BUT* this is the most essential item for smoker trait. and you'll never know what a lighter or matches can do for you in a pinch. For example, you can start a fire with a campfire kit to clear out a large hoard by luring them over it(obviously don't burn down all of Louisville) or you can burn corpses with gasoline but for the most part its for that sweet juicy 4 extra points. 2. hammer and saw. either you 're bashing zombies heads or sawing logs, its always good to have both. when needed to board up windows, doors, etc. you can also take down boarded things with hammer as well but its probably better to have in a car. Good to always have one just in case. 3. You don't need to carry a radio of sort to a loot run. just listen before you head out. that extra 1.5 encumbrance isn't needed.(cars also have radios) 4. This is mostly just preference but I don't carry soap because you can just head back to base to clean up. Hope this helped
On my current run I’ve survived 1 year 1 month and 28 days and it’s the longest I’ve survived before, definitely gonna just get bit in the groin or some shit like that soon
you don't need 9/10 of that. after 2000 hours it comes down to. Got my pipe. Got me knife, got a wee bit of food and water. got 5 band aids. simple as.
I have stopped carrying the can opener with me and always just leave it at the base with the cans. Or in a more nomadic playthrough, I leave it in the car. It weighs 0.6, too heavy to lug around for basically no reason. It's almost never necessary to be able to open cans immediately as you find them. Kinda same goes with sleeping pills; they weigh 0.3 and are basically never necessary while travelling or looting, as painkillers *OR* alcohol give the same benefit (don't mix drink and pills ever though). Leave the sleeping pills at your nightstand. With this freed up 0.9 units you have room for some other useful items. I always try to carry some 20-40 nails for random things like ropes, baseball bats, barricades, etc. Also a bowl is always useful, as you can make salads. Eating eg. beef jerky and a potato from a bowl is a lot better than eating them separately. I often also carry one comic book with me, because sadness creeps on you sometimes, even during looting. Oh and replace your pencil with the crayons, as you'll get all the colours for the map.
Add a bottle of bourbon. It's like sleeping pills, antidepressants, disinfectant, potential molotov and spare water bottle rolled into one.
Definitely a good shout.
Don't forget it's like a meal and packs 1500 calories on top of reducing panic too

Something neat about vehicles: You can place a Generator, or even those large Water Dispensers you find in office buildings in the front or back seats, even though they are over the seat's weight limit.
This is an awesome tip, I found this out on accident and was never sure if it was intended or a bug, but handy for certain!
There's a mod called "water dispenser" that allows you to just pick up the water jug and install it on another dispenser.
@@Megan-ii4gf Yeah that's how I like my mods too.
I prefer not picking any of those, but get as high athletic skill as possible so I can fight longer AND I drive a truck around
Professional Zomboider here.
Organized is a MUST, no matter what.
i pick strong and organized most of the time.
I love taking strong and being a lumberjack so i can start at max strength and can clean up with an axe easily
Deadass my setup too 😂🤝
I also always pick organised.

Bullets too
I think raiders bullets can get stuck in you too.
500 hours and I had no idea.
Instead of a pencil use crayons you can change the colors for drawing on the map
I prefer a pencil/pen as well. That extra 0.3 weight may not be much but every little bit helps.
@@giacomomeluzzi280 Why not just cook coffee? Even if its cold and raw, it still does its job (without loosing happiness)
@@mr.noname2698 I prefer vitamins because they are lighter and can be easily replenished by simply looting zombies.
Your tip is appreciated!
The suture needle holder works perfectly as a pair of tweezers, rendering them useless imo
I always keep a small firearm in the glove compartment. You can roll down the window for drive bys and it just seems super badass.
The fact that a glass alcohol bottle holds more and weighs less than an actual plastic bottle of water has got to be an oversight..
I think it's because it's a half gallon of bourbon, the water bottle is probably only 16oz
Why does it weights less tho?
@@bonaaq86 meybe its also about volume of the bottle, not just weight
When I first started playing Zomboid, I would carry around a hammer and screwdriver as weapons, constantly wear a welding mask, and carry a welding torch. I was never unprepared to do some disassembly on-the-go!
I do mostly the same as in the video (glad I'm not the only one who carries so much stuff!) but I put bandages in my main inventory since it makes the interaction significantly faster. This is because a neck wound ends your run unless you bandage it immediately, and reducing the time it takes, even just a little, can make the difference between life and death.
"bro, lets drive to the supermarket to get some snacks"
bro:
😅
The hand torch has literally saved me two times so far
@@brujua7 idk if you mean it in a good way or not, but every escaped death it's a good thing imo
completely in a good way. Hand torch FTW!
Fanny pack 1: Smokes(50~), lighter, mags(filled)
Fanny pack 2: Medical + Tools - if items have duplicate use like tweezers and Suture Needle Holder, take Suture Needle Holder.
Fanny pack 1: medical supplies
-bandages
-sterilized bandages
-needle, thread (for less serious deep wounds)
-suture needle holder
-suture neeedles (for serious deep wounds)
-alcohol wipes
-adhesive bandages (for a temporary fix where a bandage would take too long)
Fanny 2: writing supplies + bullets
Backpack: spare crowbar/axe + a roast + screwdriver/scissor/saw
Main inventory: 2 water bottles (move to backpack when empty)+ stuff on your belt(usually a hammer + wrench) + double holster
Car:
Glovebox : flashlight + extra battery + non perishable food + water bottle
Trunk: sledgehammer maybe if u know youll need it, kinda heavy tho.
Lug wrench+jack
Very good but, why do you have normal bandages? Just Sterilized bandages should be good.
5:10 pro tip you can put the generator in a car seat
Trowel/hand fork + saucepan. If things go extremely wrong and you end up injured and having to flee in a random direction for some reason, you can dig for worms to eat and collect rainwater to drink.
How screwed up you gotta be to eat earth worms lol
Damn homie
I can recommend that you put the generator on the passenger seat (only in a 4+ seat car) as it is crucial to be able to exit the car on the other side in a bad moment. The generator is weighing 40, and car seats are typically only 26 carry space, but it works anyway, and you get 1,5 the effect of the carry space of the seat.
Right on.
This is very similar to my strats only I didn't know you could wear 2 fanny packs haha. My brain just instinctually figured that if you already have one on then that was it. No more fanny packs for you haha.
I never even considered trying to wear a second one until watching this.
Thanks.
I sometimes carry a pillow with me just in case I have to crash in a car for the night.
You can't pry open garages, doors, or windows without CS mod. It's really only useful for melee or opening barricades
You can make sterilized bandages without rubbing alcohol/bourbon by placing ripped sheets/bandages in water and then boiling it.

it lets me take all of my essentials in one of them.
Anything else, like tools(wrench, crowbar, axe, sledgehammer and hammer, fuel container), extra water and an emergency shotgun they always stay on my car but it all depends on what kind of expedition i do, i just divide them between exploration, cleaning and looting run and carry the appropriate equipment for each

i usually carry a spare duffel bag when looting. i put whatever i loot in it and drop it off in my car or if shit hits the fan, i drop on the ground, kill/evade zeds, then come back for the loot.
A fanny pack for small essentials, I can't believe I hadn't thought of that sooner. Usually I just keep it all in my military bag - it's a little tough to sort out that clutter at times.

You should carry a gun at all times, as long as your shooting skill is decent and it’s just a pistol.
One of my favorite tricks is to find a big square route in a town, do my shooting and drive around the square to loot zombie free, also suppressors
I also like to keep a rope/sheet rope and some nails. Not only will the nails/rope get you out of tall buildings full of zombies but if you need an improvise weapon in early stages when you have not the best gear it can help. Also one thing of ducktape
The spare sheet rope has saved me multiple times.
Even though it's billed as a negative trait chain smoker really helps reduce the need to carry books or magazines to reduce stress.
And Knox County has enough cigarettes to last your survivor until they die of old age.
Yeah smoker is free points. From what I see, litterally everyone just keep smoking if they have smoker but here’s a pro tip if you’re able to survive long, you can just not smoke for 30 in game days and you’ll get rid of the trait

@@MrHrannsifair but that wouldn’t work in emergencies, a lot of times you will get dirty rags from those socks as well and you’d have to clean them first after already spending time to rip the socks and then you gotta start crafting and then you gotta place the sheet rope
my reaction when i reached the end of the video: ah, i see you're a fellow "killing zombies while doing reverse doughnuts" of culture as well
Pro strats
I like to usually have my screwdriver on my belt for easy disassembling and still a bit of weight reduction. My second small weapon usually being a hammer backup weapon.
Yeah I'm screwdriver+hammer when it comes to my belt. I end up being the group carpenter during MP, and since I usually main a fireaxe I don't really need a 1H weapon.
So much to learn. Lol, im gonna start playing for the first time soon
What I do is
Backpack is empty and I fill it as I loot
Fannypack1 has all medical supplies I need minus antibiotics as I only need to take those when I get back to base
Fanyback2 has pencil, rubber, can opener, lighter and all the cigarettes I can fit
In my main inventory I have a bottle of water, main weapon (usually a axe, machete, katana, crowbar) a hammer as my secondary weapon also is full for dismantling locked door as I always find screwdrivers so no point in carrying one
All tho I agree with you I still carry one fanny pack for med supplies only.
They become worth it with the conceal carry fanny packs from the Brita's mods. They can carry twice as much as the vanilla one.
@@atistioput the Fanny pack in the backpack
There's no faster way to die than going out at night in an apocalypse full of sprinters.
fun fact I figured out recently - you can put certain small containers, such as first aid kits, inside larger containers (like backpacks) and the encumbrance reduction stacks. characters can use items from inside these containers for any tasks as well, they just take a bit longer to unpack and repack
so rather than carrying all your first aid supplies in a fanny pack, you can put some of the ones that you'll be slowing down and stopping to use anyway, like suture needles and such, in something like that
I'm fairly sure the game only activates reduction on the containers you're currently wearing, are you sure it stacks for that one?
Pretty sure the reduction doesn’t stack but still a useful mechanic for organization
Dont forget, ciggies in the fanny pack
Smokers unite
If your character specializes on short blunt or uses machetes as weapons, you can carry a suitcase or another backpack in your other hand
Granola bars. I always, always forget to pack food when I go on a mass zombie cull, and you can be there all day rounding them up and putting them down. Had a lot of these that would have been cut short if it wasn't for my emergency fanny pack granola bar.
Came to say that since my first time playing, i ALWAYS carry a medical satchel with EVERYTHING in it. Crutches, yeah. Got them too.
Keeping passenger seats unoccupied is often learned the hard way! 😂
why does my fanny pack only have a max weight of 1 when it shows 2 in the video?
organized trait
Watch this part again :) 0:26
instead of a pistol saw off the barrel of the shotgun and also the buttstock ( which i think is doable in vanilla - alto i play vanilla firearms expanded) without much impact to it's performance making able to put the shotgun in the holster slot giving it a massive boost in usability without having to hog your main "back" slot
I have a meds fanny pack and an "artsy" fanny pack with pens, pencil, rubber and scissors (and whatever the hell I throw in there)
and I tend to always have a gun on me because I enjoy the chaos
restarting my sandbox save to follow some of these tips 👀
It's also somewhat situational at least, and you left out a small amount of nails, which if a hammer is around somewhere is really powerful (as it enables you to always escape from an upper story of a building if caught there, but even that is situational--it's mostly for rapid basic fortification in the field with a few random planks you found).
how do you have a axe and backpack on at the sametime
Nice post. It's interesting to see how others think about the game. But honestly, there's a lot I do differently. Here are some thoughts:
I use the fireaxe instead of the crowbar, but besides that, I agree. Just a personal preference thing.
Thats why the Veteran is so strong IMO, he(she) will never falter when the chips are down.
5:21
You spin me right round baby right round
What i carry over that:
A box of cereal as emergency food, it weighs very little yet has a substantial amount of calories
Soap to wash yourself with less water
Radio to listen for weather forecasts
Some kind of short blade weapon on the belt for emergencies
Crowbar to pop open barricaded windows
What I do NOT carry from those:
Lighter and matches, there is never a need to randomly make a fire and i don't use molotovs
Hammer and saw, i never have the need to disassemble anything at a random time
Axe and wrench for obvious reasons
Generator (it's literally 40 encumburance, just carry more gas if you really need it)
Car battery charger for obvious reasons
though I agree mostly of what you stated, but as a person who has 300+ hrs this is what I disagree.
3. You don't need to carry a radio of sort to a loot run. just listen before you head out. that extra 1.5 encumbrance isn't needed.(cars also have radios)
4. This is mostly just preference but I don't carry soap because you can just head back to base to clean up.
Hope this helped
Hammer and screwdriver are great for loot runs since you can just deconstruct doors and other furniture. As well as picking up various furniture.
For me I ALWAYS carry a fire axe simply because it’s my best weapon and I rarely need to put it in my inventory and can just keep it in my hands
For some reason, it never occurred to me that soap would make you use less water to wash yourself. I thought it just made the animation faster.
@@PixelSlayer247I'm almost positive that it doesn't use less water and only speeds up washing animation.
On my current run I’ve survived 1 year 1 month and 28 days and it’s the longest I’ve survived before, definitely gonna just get bit in the groin or some shit like that soon
you don't need 9/10 of that. after 2000 hours it comes down to. Got my pipe. Got me knife, got a wee bit of food and water. got 5 band aids. simple as.
Only thing I NEVER don’t have on me is the saw or garden saw so I can amputate my arm/hand and save my own life if I get bit
It's worth taking paper or a notebook to write notes, reminders, and lists.
Oh and replace your pencil with the crayons, as you'll get all the colours for the map.
if you take smoker you wont ever get sad. its not a negative trait at all
Meanwhile me who carries music in the fannypacks
What's the point of surviving if you don't live a little, right? lol
Had no idea fanny packs were a thing, I've just been carrying that stuff on my person.
I’m a simple man who only needs a paper clip to survive
Yeah my must have in inventory item is the general electric gau 17 Minigun.
So is there a way you made your Fanny pack hold 2 instead of one because iv never seen them hold more than 1 each
Oh wait never mind he has organized,
I assumed it wouldn't add that much because it only gives you a 30% boost but that's pretty useful
