Maybe the prison keeper Saint-Mars was being used, against his will, to keep the iron mask locked up? Iron mask probably was a nobody but Saint-Mars was forced to keep him alive as long as possible. When did iron mask die and when did Saint-Mars die?
my theory is that the multiple doors of his cell were the iron mask. i think if he was ever described as being “masked by iron” it could have been misinterpreted as a literal mask
The man in the iron mask was the first attempt at forming slipknot. I firmly believe that the heavily guarded prison was a secret recording studio where look outside your window was recorded
I figure, if it was someone kept alive, it would have to be someone who the king held a significant sentimental attachment to, or a bitter enemy whom the king felt just putting him (or her even) to death would be too quick. Someone the king would want to have suffer. A random valet who knew a dirty secret would just be beheaded and done with.
The prisoner must've been family/a relative or perhaps a high ranking politician that wanted to throw dirt on Louis, otherwise it would be better to just kill the prisoner off somewhere. Perhaps that the real name is written somewhere in a book that's being held behind locked doors in the deepest parts of the Vatican library, where only a few select people are allowed to come.
The fact that they kept him alive for so long is what makes those theories possible. Normally they would just kill someone in that situation, especially in the 1600s it was an absolute monarchy. He must have been too "important" to kill, so instead he was basically tortured for 30 years, sheesh.
We KNOW he was not "important", because of his treatment. A member of the nobility would not have been obliged to serve in prison as a valet to the really important prisoner Nicholas Fouquet, the ex. Superintendant of Finance, and a Marquis, also a long term prisoner of Louis XIV. And secondly when, at one stage, he was moved to his next prison his bedding was sold very cheaply. An aristocart in prison was still treated as one, even as a prisoner. There would have been a very good reason why he was not just killed, we don't what it was, and may never know. However Louvois and Louis XIV had to, to some extent, work within the rules. Remember a "lettre de cachet" had to be sent to the Major of Dunkirk to legitimise the initial arrest, and transfer Eustache all the way across France to Pignerol prison. This is a clear indication that Louvois, for a reason, was working within the law, and the existing correspondence shows he continued to do so for many years.
@@escapedcops08 It's not nothing. I mean, he tells the story in his usual interesting way, so if you don't know about it, it is certainly worth the watch. The title is just... meh. But he'll annoyingly change that anyway.
The French kings had such extensive power, believed to be divinely appointed, that only a truly significant moral or existential threat would have compelled Louis XIV from executing someone who clearly presented a big threat to him. The fact that he kept the prisoner alive hints to me that the prisoner was a blood relation to Louis, meaning that his murder would result in eternal punishment of Louis’ eternal soul. If the prisoner were a disgraced courtier, general or any other subject, no such eternal obstacle would have existed to his execution.
I'm inclined to go with the father theory. In the version I've heard, the poor guy looked far too much like his royal son. The idea is that since Louis 13 couldn't provide an heir, a suitable substitute was found to do the job and keep the royal line going.
Ummm good theory and all, but being kept alive doesn't actually prove he was a blood relative or any kind of relation at all. It just proves he was important, one way or another, and an execution would've been an extremely bad idea. He could've easily have been a religious figure who they couldn't kill because it wouldvev made him a martyr. We just don't know.

Now, let's get realistic: Solitary Confinement has some pretty drastic effects on the human mind. After the 5th year kept in such a manner, Whoever the guy was, he would be a gibbering Lunatic. The notion that Anyone would listen to, or even Understand, a word he said after his mind degraded in the dark, is highly unlikely. Meaning the containment procedures and secrecy had little to do with What he Knew, and Alot more to do with Who he Was. Now, consider Just How Many people royals killed or had killed with little to no regard, and the chance of it being anyone who wasn't a Direct Blood Relative of the king is slim to none. And now, how many royals killed their siblings? Many. How many killed their Fathers to ensure their own rule? Quite a few. But yknow who Often (but far from Always) escaped the chopping block? Children. Specifically Male children, legitimate or illegitimate. I think the man in the mask was the illegitimate Son of the king, who after his discovery, even likelier still the illegitimate heir to the throne who prior to being discovered had taken up the Cloth (priest or monk or friar etc) as it was Very much so frowned upon to Kill holy men. Furthermore: the soundproofing. Sure, if he knew some specific secret it'd be lost to the madness. But the constant reciting of holy texts and prayers, the kind of thing you could Only learn if you were a) Literate and b) A Member of the Church? That kind of indoctrination sticks with you, and in an Era when Literacy was almost entirely reserved for the Nobility OR the Church? That's a Clear signal to anyone who hears him saying that is a Nobleman, and Likely a holy man. Worse so if he both Looked like AND sounded like his father, the King. Just my two cents worth.
Not related to him. Possibly related to ANOTHER very, very important dignitary that he knew would get him in a ton of trouble if he executed him. So he could maintain plausible deniability by saying "yeah sure, of course he's alive, he's being VERY well cared for"
Very plausible theory Buchanan-san, but sadly Louis did a very good job of hiding the evidence. It's likely we'll never know for sure, but I for one very much doubt it was someone unrelated to the King.

It probably has to do with the French words for "fur" (some specifiek kind), "glass" and "iron". "Vair", "verre" and "fer" respectively. They kind of sound alike. So the mask was made of soft fabric, like the slippers of Cinderella. There. Mystery solved. You're welcome.
This immediately occurred to me, too, as a likely possibility. Of course, the alleged mistranslation of Cinderella's shoes is refuted as Perrault wrote "verre" in the original story, at least according to Stopes.
Apparently in this time period there was debate over which twin was oldest - The one who was born second was sometimes seen to have been conceived first. In this situation there could have been a lot of rivalry over who the true heir to the throne was.
Thats most likely the case. If time between them was short, younger one knew 100% he would just stay in his older brothers shadow for as long as older one is ruling. So “hiding” your older brother for the sake of you being the emperor is quite legit reason when it comes to royalty
Sorry, I'm a bit late to the party. Lol. I would absolutely consider your suggestion but wouldnt that mean the parents hid the brother before the twin would ever have a chance to see him as a threat? Please keep in mind, I'm not versed in this whole story but I found your comment interesting.
I always found the fact that he wore a mask so no one would know who he is very interesting. It seem like there would be some records of who he was , and why he wore the mask. I like to believe that maybe he was the king's half brother/brother that the king didn't want anyone to know about.

While a great mystery, the man in the Iron mask was more than likely a close relative to the King. There is no way he would have left anyone else with such a terrible secret as this man must have held, alive.

The poison story during Luis XIV's rule is also one the most interesting stories of the late medieval times. It basically started bc of a woman wanted her fathers money and blew out of proportions to span the entire French nobility and court in the late 17th with a lot of nobles killing each other. A lot of shit happened during the Sun Kings reign.
I remember the first time I heard a similiar story was in Ducktales where Scrooge went to visit a good friend of him who was the king of some small country but as he got there he seemingly changed completely. As you learn in that episode the evil twin brother of said king threw the true monarch into jail covering his face with an iron mask.

You guys realize that Robert Downey Jr. actually has masks that he has to wear when he goes out in public to avoid getting bombarded by either paparazzi or fans.
Given the fact that the prisoner was kept alive and many extra steps were taken to keep him hidden, then this highly suggests that the man in the mask was a relative of sorts. Anyone else would have been executed, but keeping them alive would only suggest a relative.
To me, the biggest question is why, as was said, a king didn't just make him dead. Although I wasn't alive at the time, I am told this was done on a routine basis, both publicly and privately. Therefore, examination of that king's personality and beliefs which may have discouraged execution would be the most productive area of research.
This is a great video. I love the theory about the mysterious prisoner being Louis’s real father. One thing is certain, if this mystery was ever truly solved people would soon likely lose interest. Imagine if it could be totally proved that Jack the Ripper was really a mentally ill and obscure person and not actually a member of the royal family, a famous art or an eminent surgeon, how many book deals would there be? Many people prefer the fantasy rather than the facts
"Do We Finally Know the Identity of the Man in the Iron Mask?" - Original Title Edit: Just to be clear, I understand why Arron changes the titles (YT algorithm). I'm not complaining that the title's change, I just like writing the original title in the comments so we all know what it was. BTW, I love your videos Thoughty2.
I honestly thought the Man in the Iron Mask was a fictional character from an old novel. Well, if Voltaire added or his mates in that 1 star hotel added it I guess it is technically fictional. I've always thought the iron mask was a bit too much but it does make for excellent story telling.
Well, if he died in the Bastille, he might have been buried there. And if his grave location in their graveyard was ever noted, that could easily have been lost, perhaps before 1789, very easily afterwards. He could be as lost as Mozart.
After just watching your vid on how our lack of attention spans are really the byproduct of big business using tricks like click bait, I find it interesting that you drew us in with the suggestion that the man in the iron mask had possibly been identified, just to have us find out in the end that nothing new has been determined. Don't know whether to laugh or sock you on the nose!

1:53 My mother was in an art class in her college days in Bristol. Within that classroom she worked alongside a chap there who was really good at Street art specifically. That chaps name was Steve Banks. Makes you think.
And you haven't now, Wendy! The man in the velvet mask may have been in prison for 30 years, but he was treated like royalty, or at least an aristocrat. He had a luxury jail cell, was given reading materials and other luxuries of the time. Our narrator creator of the video, somehow, forgot to mention those important details. :)

I've always found this a very intriguing story and watched many documentaries on it, but this is the first I've ever heard he didn't actually where an iron mask. Interesting
Once I was struggling in life and I didn't speak to a fellow human in nearly two weeks. Twenty nine years seems incredibly cruel to do that to a person and the King must have had a heart of stone.
I've always liked the theory that he was actually Louis XIV and Philippe's bio dad. If you look at all the evidence it makes the most sense but this is one of those things we might never know.
There’s got to be one damn good reason why he was kept alive. I cannot think of any, and yet keep him locked up, face covered, and silent. It’s a truly strange story.
Prisoner: and he had a black velvet mask on… Voltaire: no, no that’s not cool enough… how about iron? An iron mask? Yeah that’s good Prisoner: no I’m telling you, he had a velve- Voltaire: Henry, please, that simply isn’t cool enough for the epic story I’m coming up with in my head
I always keep poking my phone to see whether there's a notification from thought2 . Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction, but I guess this whole "man in the iron mask" is made up, well maybe a gladiator or a dangerous warrior.
Serious question: Was the alleged entry found by rioters at the Bastille “Prisoner # 64389000, The Man in the Iron Mask” simply made up by someone and not really found at all? If there’s any validity to this claim, then apparently there was someone in an iron mask. I know it’s mentioned on the movie, but according to some writings it did exist. Sincerely curious.
Yes, fiction to support and justify the riot. The Bastille was never full of prisoners. It was not built as a prison but as a defensive work for Paris.
@@danMdan it is said they did find his skeleton inthe bastile with his mask still on,however it can't be true because the buried his body in church nearby and destroyed his head when he died,a beggar confides this.
@@scallywag4978 it has all the smell of a fairy story. Remember de Junca wrote in his prison diary, which still exists, that the the Man-of the Mask was most certainly buried,
“This particular bit of friendly, incest-related banta was so hilarious that Voltaire was immediately thrown in France’s most notorious prison: the Bastille.” 😂😂😂
A few theories: It's no secret that celebs use fake names for hotels. What stopped people from using fake occupations. Could the occupation listed be there just to throw others off? If it was someone involved in the poisonings, with that amount of effort in securing the prisoner never escaping, could he have been the one to create said poison? This would explain the need to keep him locked away to not only ensure he could not do damage to those in authority, but would also ensure he could not share the the recipe to enemies.

I recently discovered your channel and I'm learning so much interesting things. Thanks for keeping up the hard work!

Maybe the Man in the Mask was the real Louis the 14th himself.
Maybe an imposter sat on the throne.
Just as in the movie.
Oh that is a great hypothesis.

@Real Aiglon I know, I guess you call that time period the renaissance
I remember the first time I heard a similiar story was in Ducktales where Scrooge went to visit a good friend of him who was the king of some small country but as he got there he seemingly changed completely. if so he would have been nearly 90 when died in the Bastille. The prisoner himself gave his age when in the Bastille as about 60, so impossible.

Voltaire: Henry, please, that simply isn’t cool enough for the epic story I’m coming up with in my head

Best story teller on yt
Speaking of famous prisoners, do Charles Bronson (the crazy guy stuck in UK solitary for 47 years, not the Death Wish actor).
I always keep poking my phone to see whether there's a notification from thought2 . Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction, but I guess this whole "man in the iron mask" is made up, well maybe a gladiator or a dangerous warrior.
Everyone: It isn’t possible to become the perfect life form
Me:
Who is the Man in the Iron Mask?
Why, Tony Stark, of course
i was gonna say that lol-
Funny. ❤😂
Remember de Junca wrote in his prison diary, which still exists, that the the Man-of the Mask was most certainly buried,
If he was the father of Louis XIV, was he also the father of Filip? Is there a theory about that too?
“This particular bit of friendly, incest-related banta was so hilarious that Voltaire was immediately thrown in France’s most notorious prison: the Bastille.” 😂😂😂
A few theories:
It's no secret that celebs use fake names for hotels.
I always have Thoughty 2 to tell the truth about people I never heard about
