Hey thank you so much I had a project where I had to write a summary for this book and if you get time, do you think this would be a good summary? The main character, Christian Florescu, is a 17 year old boy living in communist Romania with his parents, his sister Cici, and his grandfather Bunu. Christians world is a world full of fear, and constant surveillance. He goes to school but one day he is pulled away by the securitate officer who he calls “Paddle Hands”, and he tells Christian that he is going to be an informer and he doesn't have the choice not to be because if he doesn't inform his grandfather, Bunu does not get the medicine he needs because of his Leukemia. In Romania at the time there were lots of people that informed even their own family members that informed on what they say and do are anti-communist. Christian owns a notebook where he writes things like poems and stuff that is happening in the time, and his plan is to give it to an American Ambassador because he wants to let the world know what is happening because the whole Romania was isolated so nobody knew anything. At the time, almost all of the other countries were falling from communism Romania just stood there, but they started doing protests and stuff and the leader started shooting the citizens and so many people were dying, and at this time he gets taken to prison and its for long term prisoners and he has to escape to help his girlfriend Liliana who helps him escape. He then goes to go look for his friend Luca who he thinks informed on him because he was pulled in by paddle hands talking about how they shared a coke which is illegal. He thought that Luca informed but it was actually Cici the whole time. After, Christian and Liliana become friends, but then they aren’t anymore because Liliana got called in because she got caught with the coke and she thought that it was Christian that informed on her, then Liliana started hating Christian because she thought he was an informer, which he was, because he was informing on Van Dorn, but he didn't inform on Liliana. Then, Bunu actually got his medicine but then got beaten to death. Bunu actually didn’t have leukemia even though everyone thought he did but he was actually getting poisoned by the secret police because of the coffee they were giving him. Back to the revolution stuff, when he gets out of the prison, he goes to find his friend Luca, because he took a shot for Christian. They then find out that Luca had lost his arm from that and he was in critical condition when they went to see him. He also finds Cici there and Christian really hates her so he tells her to go help Liliana. They ended up finding out that Luca was okay. The book ends with the tyrannical leader and his wife getting shot and the journal that Christian was writing got sent to USA, and it was read out to the global radio.
@@ali-rn9mc This is a good start but I would say that you should summarize a bit more and shorten the summary. Of course I don’t know the exact instructions you got for the assignment. For example with Bunu, you don’t have to talk about his leukemia in the beginning, at the end of the summary you can just say “they thought he had leukemia but he was actually getting poisoned.” And with Luca the same thing, you don’t have to write the exact details of what happened. I hope that helps and you do good on your assignment!
