This interview has really stirred me, I am 56 years old and have been racked with guilt for years, I'm wish I had an ounce of this womens courage. Maybe I could of saved other children from being abused, I'm shaking as I write this, my 14 year old self is writing this.
I was sexualy abused by a BBC camera man, he told me he worked on Top of the Pops , at the time he abused me they were filming a children's drama called Code Name Icrus which was aired in 1981 / 1982 . My parents had a pub that was being filmed in the drama, the crew used to drink in there after filming, I was star struck, especially with a camera man who was telling me about all of the famous pop stars he'd worked with, and Blue Peter, he even gave me a Blue Peter Badge which he conveniently produced from his trouser pocket.
Whilst drinking at the bar he was buying baccadi and Coke, and buying me coke , he was then tipping the baccadi from his glass into mine, at the time I thought it was so cool, my parents had no idea what he was doing, at 10 o'clock my parents told me to leave the bar and go to bed which I did, due to the amount of alcohol I'd been given I fell asleep almost immediately, I guess it was aprox an hour later I was woken up by the camera man getting into my bed , I was absolutely terrified during my abuse.
As an adult now I know I couldn't of been the only child he'd groomed and attacked, he knew exactly what he was doing.
I didn't tell my parents because I thought I'd get into trouble, I told my Mum when I was 35 years old, she was mortified and sad that I didn't tell her at the time.
I carry so much guilt, because I know i probably wasn't the last child he abused. The lady here has so much courage, how brave she is.

I had a friend who was a guest at a civic banquet in the 1980s. No one could sit down until the guest of honour took their seat. When she went to sit down the male dignitary in the seat next to her had put his hand, palm up, on her chair. She turned to him and quietly said. ‘ if you don’t remove your hand I’ll break your fucking arm!’ A no nonsense young woman ahead of her time!!

I grew up in New Zealand & been in Australia 45 yrs.
Harris being WHAT he was,to most of us,was a complete shock…but because of the brave woman Suzi is,things are changing for women to be SAFER from this kind of harassment.
Between Rolf & “Hey,Dad”,working in the industry wasn’t good.
As a rape victim in my 20’s who never reported it,I feel so proud of women like Suzi for outing such creepers.
I didn’t have the courage even to just report-Suzi has stood up publicly to have Harris bought to justice.

Great podcast James ❤ Everything Suzi said about being a young woman in the 80's is 100% correct. I can so relate. Often, when we look back, we see the world with a 2023 lens, but it was a different world then. Harassment/innuendo against women in the work place/society was common place, and being a young working woman in the 80's, it was very much a man's world and you were seen as fair game 😪 Thank you Suzi for being a voice for the voiceless. I am looking forward to reading your book.

When Savile was exposed it came as no shock .. he creeped me out watching him on the TV in the 70s.
Rolf Harris was different. He was part of our child hood. He was ‘uncle Rolf’ type character who we trusted and loved. As we grew up he then started to cry in the vets and we trusted him because it was Rolf.
I’m of the generation that genuinely felt left down by him. A huge part of a lot of our childhoods yet turned out to be be a creepy fake.
Impressed with Suzi and her way of handling this along with her honesty.

I was very surprised at the time by Rolf's conviction. I liked him from when I was age 8 [when I used to watch his children's show Hey Presto!] until adult. To me all that time he was TVs 'Mr Clean'. Unlike Jimmy Savile there was nothing remotely suspicious or 'creepy' about him.He seemed a good likeable singer, I had his record Two Little Boys when I was 11/12 and a few years later two of his albums. He appeared to be a good TV entertainer/presenter for both children's and adult shows, comedian, artist and later, a documentary presenter [his animal shows in the 1990s]. Also in the 1990s he fronted an anti-child abuse campaign. He was also a talented artist and for this reason he was admired by the Queen.
when he was first arrested I fully expected the allegations to be discredited and the case thrown out. I had considered the accusers to be either money-motivated or had merely considered affection to be abuse. Even after his conviction, I was sceptical and signed an on-line 'Rolf is Innocent' petition, thinking he had been a victim of malicious allegations for one of aforementioned reasons and a miscarriage of justice . However it appears that I was not the only one to be taken in by his image. It was only when I heard about the number of his accusers that I began to change my mind. person could have a few false accusers but not dozens.

Good on you Suzi! All the men who witnessed your assult should be held accountable too. A friend of mine worked in the BBC in makeup and she told me it was well known you never let Harris alone with women or children. I live in Perth, Western Australia, two suburbs over from Bassendean - the suburn Harris was born in and grew up. The second he was convicted, the local Council disposed of all his artwork they had displayed around the district and the marking plaque of the house he grew up in was taken away. Working in tv myself, I know he was drspised and was a totally different person when the cameras were off.

I found it interesting that the first thing she mentioned was that her mum was a narcissist. So that clearly played a large role in her life. However, she then went on to make many narcissistic comments herself.

Everyone has narcissistic traits, doesn't make one a narcissist. Narc traits is a big part of living with ego and plays a part in protection and boundaries. And we can't all be empathic soft little cupcakes, they're the ones that get abused the most.

@@phoenixkali yep. I wasn’t necessarily saying it was a bad thing to have narcissists traits, just interesting it was the very first thing she mentioned. My hubby and I had a really unloved bringing up,but James we’ve been together for 60yrs,and it’s really took our three boys to teach us love, especially my youngest. I relate so much to what Suzi has been through - I have a story or two of my own. It's a complex issue though, and not as simple as women being the victims and men the perpetrators. In our work to ensure women get the support and justice they need we need to be aware and guard against the misuse and abuse of that very system by women. The processes in place to help and support women are being weaponised by some women - it's way too easy to make false allegations against men with devastating, permanent and irreversible consequences. In my case it cost my son his wife and family and in the end cost his life. The female got away scot free in spite of authorities knowing (and admitting they knew) that the allegations were false. While our experiences of abuse have been devastating, and the journey to recovery long and difficult, it's important to ensure we keep a balance and realise that abuse can and is perpetrated by men AND women, and that we need to advocate for justice for PEOPLE, not just women.

I have to object to the slur on scouts mentioned on here.
I have been involved with scouts since a child and as a leader.
I have taken many children away for weekends camping and they have had an adventure that they do not forget … and no one has been sexually abused.
I appreciate there has been some bad apples and I fully support the key being thrown away for any convicted child abusers.
However, in my years in scouting I have met many, many genuine people who ARE NOT sexually abusing kids. They are trying to facilitate some great experiences for young people in a safe environment.

And that's great, but that's just your personal experience.
How do you know you weren't rubbing shoulders with child abusers?
Do they wear a special badge or have a secret handshake?
Unfortunately, history tells us wherever you get youth activities, you'll get paedophiles. Children's homes, Sunday school, sports practice, summer schools, theatre groups, schools, etc.
These monsters hide in plain sight. They are married with families of their own, they help out at the school fair, they coach under 13s football on a Saturday morning.

Its a common issue that us as women cannot fix as it is a male problem, statistically. How to solve it ? No idea . All I know is, i still sleep with a light on and therapy is expensive 🙃
