Paul is incredibly precise with a huge pocket, but Stuart's lines are so original and his tone is otherworldly - hardly anything he played on the albums are what I'd consider to be a "stock" bass line. IMO, it's difficult to compare the 'acid jazz' 90s era Jamiroquai bass lines to the 2000s disco / dance sound. The tight, funky playing of Turner and Fyffe were/are perfect for the evolution of the band, but if I had to pick a body of work, Zender's still my idol.
Zander all the time. Turner is very good “traditional” bassist but Zander really had something unique to say in those early Jamiroquai’s records. It’s kinda like Newsted vs Burton. Newsted is objectively more solid and really locks with the drums and supports the guitars, but Cliff did something that was true to him and only to him.
I love Jamiroquai and for me Zender was the best bassist but...every time I heard Zender playing a Warwick I always said to myself "What better sound he would have if he played a Jazz" ;-)
Stuart makes you learn different ways to approach bass playing, he changes the role of the bass guitar in the song. I have no doubt about this one, Stu is number one
Stuart is currently on March 23rd 2024 in Indonesia for a concert. He is warming up for a world tour to promote is forthcoming Album "Adventura" featuring Omar Lye Fook and many more surprises. Stuart is among the great bass player of the 90's when it comes to groove. Jamiroquai is also currently in the studio to record a new album too
Stuart Zender is the reason I picked up bass. My big bro used to wake me up every morning by putting on the album version of Alright. You could feel those low notes through your soul. Return of the Space Cowboy is a timeless classic. I listen to it all the time and it always sounds fresh.
Like someone here in the comments already said: the feel is probably inspired by Chic’s I Want Your Love. But I think the idea he got for the bassline of Runaway might be coming from the record of Roy Ayers’ Running Away.
If your focus is on bass lines when you hear a song, that’s your signal to learn. You don’t have to play to the level of Jamiroquai bassists to enjoy funky bass lines, just work your way up with simple lines, paying attention to the groove. A tight playing is where it’s at. Wishing you all the best in your bass learning journey!
I've got a few guitars and always have had a dabble, no serious lessons... This channel is making me want to take the bass path, there's just something about it! Thanks for the amazing content as always :)
I'm sorry but we've known Jamiroquai since the 90's with Stuart Zender playing the grooviest bass lines of the band, although I love the groove and the Paul Turner technique too
Hey you two „bass cowboys“, this video inspires me to pick up my bass straight away to learn this song, so good! Because of you and your last Jamiroquai vids, I‘m rediscovering him again (I‘m a 55 year old bass lover and player, I learned „too young to die“ 30 years ago), I never heard Jamiroquai as much as in the last four weeks! Thank you guys, I love your channel, you‘re an inspiration! Greetings from Germany!
Paul is a Great Bass Player but he plays much more than Stuart Zender. His lines were something easier but superfunky, more soulful, breathing the groove. And even Fyffe was more groovy and funkier than Paul. He is completely underrated. As someone said before: Paul is a great modern Bass Player but Stuart did the unforgettable Super-Jamiroquai-Shit!
Actually, Runaway was recorded direct into the board using his 1964 Candy Apple Red P-Bass for the verse sections, with his '76 Musicman Stingray for the chorus sections. Great video as always!
0:42 I was late as well. Twice. I heard them on the radio in '99, they played Canned Heat. Loved it and became a fan. Much later I found out they were doing a concert nearby, which was a week before, so it was sold out already. Great videos guys, keep 'em coming.
I just looked at this video... Man did you guys hit on most of the bass lines of my child hood... WOW.....thanks for the memories. I used to hum these bass lines of these songs sitting in the back seat of my dads car. I was not too concerend about the other parts.... JUST THE BASS !!!!!
Love this lesson ! 5 yrs ago when I 1st picked up the bass, one of my 1st lessons was SBL’s 10 Funkiest Bass Lines and it had this song, or a piece of it. Full circle !!
I started playing bass very soon after the first Jamiroquai album (not a coincidence). There’s no comparison. Stuart Zender is in a different league. He has his own voice, like only the best players do. And is one of the funkiest players of all time. Both Scott and Ian know this (especially Scott), but they are great at making videos that get people engaged and commenting. 😂
Wonder why there is a lot of talks about this song on the channel but noone ever mentioned that this bass line (main part of it) is based on Roy Ayer's Running Away? Even the name of the song hints at it!
One of Stuart Zenders influences comes to mind: Paul Jackson. His work on Headhunters and other Herbie Hancocks albums (Headhunters, Thrust, Man-Child, Secrets) and the comparison to the live versions from the album Flood of these songs. Genius stuff and WAY ahead of it’s time!
Fun fact - A few years ago I actually was doing a tour with an artist & halfway through the tour Paul Turner came in and filled in for the bassist for a few shows. It was so bizarre that although Paul was playing pretty much the same parts as the other bassist, but the vibe, the feel that Paul gave those bass lines really made me sit up and appreciate how much better one bassist can be from another. He was on another level, man I loved being part of that tour, on the stage doing their monitor mixes and the buzz, really fun time:).
I relate totally to Ian: *this* was my very introduction to Jamiroquai - while living in France, mind you (still struggle to pronounce the name as a result, tsk) - even now I'm still retroactively discovering Stuart Z through their earlier works. But this remains my all-time fave; kudos, props and nuff respect to Mr. Paul Turner.
Hello ! you mentionned Chic, but i can"t imagine that Runaway isn't an hommage to the fabulous "Running Away" of Roy Ayers... Excellent piece of music :)
SZ is a great fave of mine but if you like Jamiroquai I suggest you also check out Incognito with Julian Crampton on bass. First stop should be Jacob's Ladder. A monster player if ever there was.
Abbey Road jam session introduced me to Paul Turner, and boy is he grooving or what. Zender is otherworldly in creativity, but Paul Turner is more relatable to an amateur beginner like me.
I came in to Jamiroquai on bass tracks by Paul Turner. In fact, I first was able to hear the bass guitar frequency on the Jamiroquai track - Love Foolosophy that was played by Paul Turner.
Gentlemen please do a part 2 of this🙏🏾. Suggestions: ain’t no stopping us now, that’s the way I like it (KC & the Sunshine Band), love hangover (Diana Ross), for the love of money (O’Jays), Shake (Gap Band), Fresh (Kool & the Gang).
To young to die, Cosmic girl and Time Won't Wait are my top 3. Lot of genius. Love you Stuart, love you Paul. 2 sources of inspiration and talented bassists.
I really appreciate Stu, but when I first came across this incredible band playing in the studio it was Paul playing “Run Away “, and Paul was thumping it. I then saw Jamiroquai up on stage in front of a live audience, and Zender was rockin’ the house. Yes playing “Run Away “ slow was the way I learned how to play it clean. This band just sound so good. Thanks fellows for sharing your skills and enthusiasm. You guys rock it!!! 👍🏾🎼🎼🎼
Maybe I could be wrong.. But I think that in the first part of the Riff the low C is taken with the middle finger and the high C (after having played the E flat and D on the first string) is taken at the tenth fret of the second string and then continues on B flat😊 thanks for your work🙏🏻
wow was that line [from the beginning] an homage to the famous Jungle Boogie riff? Apologies for not knowing all of Jamiroquai's stuff yet, i still got some digging to do lol Great vid as always! Gonna use this to work on my ghost notes and hearing roots, 5ths, and octaves better.
Paul is (obviously) great too. I mostly know him for his active type bass sounds but I prefer the more vintage-y p-bass, darker sounds that Zander started the band with
I was wondering, could you look at the bassline from Messages From The Stars by the Rah Band? The synth bassline is so good and I think it would be cool to see a breakdown of that
Loving that Jamiroquai bass players are getting the recognition they've deserved for so very long!
All of them very much deserve the love!!
Paul is incredibly precise with a huge pocket, but Stuart's lines are so original and his tone is otherworldly - hardly anything he played on the albums are what I'd consider to be a "stock" bass line. I actually stopped listening to Jamiroquai when they started moving away from their acid jazz roots. Their early material is just fire!
100% agree
Yeah, I agree.
very well said
Couldn't agree more.
👍
good analogy
It's "Zender" .. Paul brings the funk far more that Stuart ever did .. but Stuart is unique.
Well said
Mr Moon has to be my favourite. Zender goes crazy on that one! Made me buy a Warwick Streamer
I love Jamiroquai and for me Zender was the best bassist but...every time I heard Zender playing a Warwick I always said to myself "What better sound he would have if he played a Jazz" ;-)
Ha ha ha, yep, that happened to me too! Wish I still had it, such a sweet bass
@@luigi.zanini Oh I love Warwick's sound. It's chewy, dry, snappy and growly.
I got a Streamer because of Zander 😅
End of discussion here and given how old he was back then is even more impresive.
My favorite bassline is Scam. Just so fkn funky!
And Mr Moon, Space Cowboy (single version with Zender). So many classics
@@adamgreenhill110 Yes! Those and Manifest Destiny too.
Oh yes, Mainfest Destiny for me too. Best of a fantastic bunch.
Yup. Nothing beats the scam bassline.
the bass on Manifest Destiny is awesome
👍👍👍

That is so spot on. Exactly right. Great observation!
Still gotta be Space Cowboy for me - so clean, so fresh, so funky. Stankface for days.
I want to learn the bass. That’s what I hear mostly in songs, but can’t imagine being this good!

Nick Fyffe is my favorite. Listen to "Falling", for example- The guy was so versatile.
Nick is an absolute monster, really underrated!!
Love foolosophy has one of the 3 greatest basslines in the Jamiroquoi canon IMO. Not easy to suss
Paul is a Great Bass Player but he plays much more than Stuart Zender. His lines were something easier but superfunky, more soulful, breathing the groove.

I'm with Ian on this. I discovered Jamiroquai pretty late too, (and Runaway is one of my favorite basslines of all time).
That Lull is just f..... awesome! This is one of my favourite basslines ever!!!
I love too young to die, that groove and that sound 😍
😍😍😍
Such a great bass riff & song. Paul Turner is the man!
Finally some Paul Turner LOVE ! !
Lots of love for Paul Turner here at SBL!!
Actually, Runaway was recorded direct into the board using his 1964 Candy Apple Red P-Bass for the verse sections, with his '76 Musicman Stingray for the chorus sections. Great video as always!
Great stuff, thanks folks!
LOVE that old-school Yamaha BB with the P/J setup, super versatile & underrated bass; perfect for this track.
Pino always says..."play light" 😊

Just Another Story is a bass tour de force like no other..
I was goin to say that what are they talking about lol zender zender just another story just so original funky
YAAAAASS! Just Another Story is top shelf Zender
One of the greatest bass performances ever! As soon as it comes in, it blows your mind
Space Cowboy and Traveling Without Moving are my 2 faves
Great choices!!
When You Gonna Learn was the first "serious" bassline I've learned when young. Love it till this day.
🧡🧡🧡
Love this lesson ! 5 yrs ago when I 1st picked up the bass, one of my 1st lessons was SBL’s 10 Funkiest Bass Lines and it had this song, or a piece of it. Full circle !!
Ian's bridge pickup tone is just fantastic. That's what I'm looking for.

Verse bass line actually reminds me more of Roy Ayers - Running Away. Similar title too
Pino's contributions to the Go West album. Beautiful playing.
I just came across you two playing together. Excellent work!
Love Jamiroquai, love you guys, love the video, love the two heads banging in the bottom right corner. :D
Wonder why there is a lot of talks about this song on the channel but noone ever mentioned that this bass line (main part of it) is based on Roy Ayer's Running Away?

Whoever make content about Jamiroquai, earns my full like, suscribe and love immediately. Great content by the way!
They are such an underrated band! Sometimes I feel like North Americans don’t know anything about music, lol.
But we’ll have a new album soon from them!!
Love the bassline in deeper underground. Not the hardest but so funky.
🔥🔥🔥
Simply a stunning bass line.
great cover. played with feel..great sound of bass ,amp...well done thank you for video ❤ ireland
Master piece of art! Well done ❤

zender was the best player jamiroqui ever had zender also wrote quite a few tracks for the band too
This is not Zender vs Turner, both are amazing Bass Heroes

I’m just drooling over the Lull IMA4 (first one built) and the gorgeous BB3000.
Thanks Scott & Ian, always great stuff !
Cheers!!!
funky!!
Great stuff 🔥 ’Blow your mind’ really blow my mind in 1993. Love it! Time for some Brand New Heavies?
Time won't wait is the best for me, but I respect the opinion, you selected great grooves.
SZ is a great fave of mine but if you like Jamiroquai I suggest you also check out Incognito with Julian Crampton on bass. First stop should be Jacob's Ladder. A monster player if ever there was.
This was rad!

Zender all day long!!!
As far as I know, although he is shown with that BC Rich in the video, Bernard recorded I want your love with a Music Man with flatwounds 😊❤
Crazy line ! Thanks dudes 🙏
👍👍👍
I came in to Jamiroquai on bass tracks by Paul Turner. In fact, I first was able to hear the bass guitar frequency on the Jamiroquai track - Love Foolosophy that was played by Paul Turner.
Great, just great. can listen for hours . . . 👍👍👍
Thanks guys for the PDF
You're welcome!
Off-topic, but I love that acrylic Strat that Nile Rodgers was playing in that live clip of Chic.
Paul is about the technique and fill in, but zender maannn... He put on the soul to the bass line and make it FITS
Both you guys make your bass just SING,,,watch you guys over & over 🎸🤠 Arkansas USA
For me, I love all those... that runaway is great, but the one that stuck with me is the intensity of don't give hate a chance
insane bro!
Imagine growing up on them! 🎉
yes! more Jamiroquai, nice :)
You guys are fucking great! I can honestly say that SBL makes my life better.

Great suggestions there, thanks!
👏👏👏 Thanks boys!!
To young to die, Cosmic girl and Time Won't Wait are my top 3.
Lot of genius. Love you Stuart, love you Paul.
2 sources of inspiration and talented bassists.
I have Paul Turner's old Eden bass rig (4x10 & 2x10). Weighs a ton, but it's a beast when you push it, and even I can't make it sound bad.
Stuart Zander is da groove :)
The abbey road session is a masterpiece
What a great bass line! Totally beastly.
🧡🧡🧡
@@devinebassI really love your content, Basses, Banter and style. Along with your fantastic playing. So very inspiring.
Check out Roy Ayer’s “Running Away” and the bass line should sound sort of familiar…
Love it -- how about an analysis of "Time Won't Wait"? IMO the grooviest Jamiroquai bassline
🧡🧡🧡
YES
My favorite is "Too Young Too Die"

I was literally listening to traveling without moving for the first time the other day thinking about how good the bass

You two are my favourite young players. Musical and technical, a great inspiration. Find a shit hot drummer and range of vocalists and please tour.

Can we get some love for Rick Danko and his Ampeg fretless scroll bass on the channel?
Rick Danko on any bass!
Rick Danko on every bass.
I was late on him too!!!! I love his music!!!!
CLASSIC
That BB is heaven!
Definitely!
Mr Moon 👏
What song was that they were playing in the start of the video?
Jamiroquai - Light Years
@@devinebassThanks 👍
LOL at the intro. Yeah this is so great.
Paul is (obviously) great too. I mostly know him for his active type bass sounds but I prefer the more vintage-y p-bass, darker sounds that Zander started the band with
Could you guys do Ska / 2tone 1978 onwards there’s plenty for you guys to cover
I was wondering, could you look at the bassline from Messages From The Stars by the Rah Band? The synth bassline is so good and I think it would be cool to see a breakdown of that
GOTTEM
you can't say master class in disco bass without mentioning Bernard Edwards.
and im glad that they did. I've always known disco to be important for bass grooves but now I have a direct target to focus on.
