  • In this video I will show you how to replace the engine cooling fan resistors on your 2014-2021 Ram Promaster, which control the speed of the engine fan. A common symptom of bad fan resistors is a high speed short-cycling cooling fan while using the A/C or when the van is running hot. A common misconception is that this is normal, when it is in fact not normal and is actually causing your A/C system to be overworked and your engine to run on the brink of overheating. A trip to the dealer for this repair is at least $700 or more. Save yourself the money and do it yourself in 10 minutes with no tools required in your driveway. Part below (Paid Amazon link) you need. I recommend only genuine Fiat/Mopar resistors. You will need 2. amzn.to/3CyZpPN

    This video was very helpful. My low speed fan was not running at all and I only found out when the van was overheating without AC. Turns out 60amp fuse blew and the contact on the resistor broke somehow. Thank you!

    Just did this - took me some time to figure out how to get to it. My 2018 2500 has four tabs and a Torx. Once the torx is out it is pretty easy to pull it out. I just used a Torx bit attached to a ratchet handle and was able to easily get the lower one closer to the driver side from underneath the vehicle, and the other one from under the hood.

    I can not thank you enough for this video. I watched your video before taking my 2018 2500 Promaster to my regular mechanic. It needed brakes, sticker and I asked him to listen to the van van screaming every 15 seconds. I started to tell him what I thought it was (your fix). Before I could get it out of my mouth, he said it was the A/C that needed to be charged. That is what causes the fan to kick on high. Knowing this would not work, I went with it as the other work needed to be done. I picked up the van, and while we were talking, the van fan started screaming again, but he just ignored it. I said the only way to fix this is by doing it myself. So, I ordered the parts and fixed it. 100 percent was the problem for the entire time. I ended up taking apart a lot of the front end due to not being able to get the screw out, but that was no big deal.

      So now you know your mechanic isn't a very good mechanic. Glad you did it yourself.

    Thanks for the vid! Just replaced the resistors in mine and about to go run some errands to see if it worked. One of the originals was snapped, though the other seemed alright, if not a little dirty and lightly corroded. 2018 Promaster 2500 95k miles.
    A NOTE FOR OTHERS: The resistors on my van each had a single T20 Torx bolt attaching them to the fan assembly. It took me much longer than I would have liked to figure out it was a torx head and not hex. Otherwise the swap was pretty simple, just a little bit of finger gymnastics to get the 4 clips undone. I also put some dielectric grease in there as well and it seemed to make the connectors go on a fair bit more easily. Well worth the minor cursing and zero blood to do this at home vs $$$ for the shop.

    Fantastic job on the video. Very informative and helpful. My pro master started doing this week and I figured it may the new thermostat malfunctioning that I replaced last month, and could be. So I’ll check the system over again as well as the packs and replace as needed. Thanks for the great info again 🖖

      I just used a screwdriver to cry one open and tugged on the wiring a little bit and the other one released on its own. I was just careful not to pull too hard and break anything

    The dealer is telling me it’s the fan and harness because the harness is corroded. Do you think I should change the harness and resistor first

    • @JackofAllMasterofNone
      @JackofAllMasterofNone  Год назад

      Obviously without seeing it I can't tell you what to do, but the dealer is usually quick to recommend the most lucrative $$$$$ option, versus trying to clean up corrosion and just fix what's broken.

    My dash eng temp gauge only goes half way up no matter how hot the engine gets. I read this is normal for these lemon vehicle. I replaced resistors next morning I hear the fans running Burned some wiring. It's been sitting 18 months while I make payments on loan and ins. Not taking it to dealership bc I heard guys paying $4,500. Another guy was asked to come get his they couldn't fix it. Smaller shops don't want to touch it.

    its weird I replaced my fans and one comes on right away but the left one only comes on when it's supper heated up. I'm not sure if it's normal or not. I have the ac on full blast and it's hot outside but still only one works like 80% of the time. Is that normal?

    • @JackofAllMasterofNone

    what about when the radiator fan is running when the vehicle is off?

    • @JackofAllMasterofNone
      @JackofAllMasterofNone  Год назад

      If it's just for a few seconds when you turn it off, that's normal. If it just runs and runs it's a problem and most likely the fan controller or PCM. Would need troubleshooted and diagnosed.

    The tabs are a pain. My 2020 had the torx screw. Takes longer than 10 mins. Terrible design, these will corrode again in no time as I am by the ocean. I am going to coat with a heat sync silicone compound.

    • @JackofAllMasterofNone
      @JackofAllMasterofNone  Год назад +1

      The problem is the way Chrysler uses resistors instead of pulse width modulation like every other modern fan controller. Resistors just build heat, which causes premature failure.

      @@JackofAllMasterofNone the one resistor was so corroded and rotted out, upon removal it broke in half and fell into the abyss of the fan Shroud area bottom near the bumper. Never to be seen again.
