  • The Museum at Eldridge Street is housed in an 1887 restored synagogue located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. This awe-inspiring Moorish, Gothic and Romanesque building was the first great house of worship built by Eastern European Jews settling in New York. After a 20-year restoration campaign, the sanctuary now holds tours, education and cultural events. A must-see for the renovation tour is the monumental stained-glass window that was a collaboration by artist Kiki Smith and architect Deborah Gans. Visit www.eldridgestr... and plan your gasp-inducing adventure.

One of the most beautiful synagogues in Manhattan, ranking among the Bialystoker Synagogue, Congregation Ohab Zedek, Congregation Shearith Israel -The Spanish & Portugese Synagogue, and Park East Synagogue, as one of the treasures of New York City. The restored synagogue is featured in the new book, "Ten Times Chai: 180 Orthodox Synagogues of New York City," where the reader is taken on a virtual tour of 180 existing orthodox synagogues in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island, with 613 color photos.

I was there in 2008. A small group of people was visiting. After the tour every visitor was asked how they arrived in america. Everybody was jewish and had a vary scary story. I was the only non jew, i could not believe the lack of interest in such an important place.
