This reminds me of this airport who got extreme amounts of complaints that people had to wait absolute ages for their baggage. Like people were actually raaaging. Reminds me of in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory where people were complaining that that the Allies SMG was way stronger than the Axis SMG. But the weapons were exactly the same numerically. The devs figured out that the Thompson just had bassier audio than the MP40, so players felt like it was better. They just brought down the bass and that "fixed" it. The idea that the Thompson was better was so ingrained, that players actually statistically did worse with the MP40 just because they thought it was weaker.

Reminds me of a developer commentary that I listened to for "Half-Life 2: Episode Two", where they were talking about the development process for a puzzle in the game involving an elevator in order to make it function. Initially, the puzzle was somewhat complicated, involving the player having to find multiple components in multiple locations within the area, then assembling them in a particular order; problem was, many of their playtesters were getting stuck on the segment because for them it was too complicated.
One of the playtesters, and I shit you not, ended up drowning in a puddle maybe a foot deep trying to figure out how to solve the puzzle.
The only way to refine the segment to the point that a reasonable number of testers could solve the puzzle in a reasonable amount of time was to grossly oversimplify the puzzle to the point that all the player now has to do is find ONE component, just mash it onto a very obvious component slot, then pull a lever.
If you purchase "The Orange Box" it has that game and several others, all with developer commentaries you can listen to; the way they speak it, their play tester team was either a bunch of very competent monkeys, or people who spent a large part of their developmental years eating lead paint chips and headbutting brick walls.

In playtesting, both paths were open, with one leading to the next room and the other being a short loop back to where you started. For any serious thought into this:
It only works if the problem was actually something else that you happened to 'fix', and there's another problem that isn't addressed: regressive feedback.
(*)For all video game problems complained about on the internet, it's mostly anonymous. It's very easy to say "players are unhappy" but WHICH players? If you change something, and "players are unhappy" how do you know if the previous group is now satisfied and it's a new group of players speaking? It's actually not that hard to actually do this, but a lot of people don't even check.
For the false ping, it probably worked because of a combination of the two:
      - Ping wasn't the huge factor in satisfaction vs performance, if players couldn't confidently blame "the game" then they could only blame themselves for just not being good enough, which is usually far less frustrating.
      - (*)People who didn't notice a change at all would still be complaining, no patch ever goes with 100% approval with thousands or millions of players.
Also, this was a long time ago. There are a lot of recent examples in 2024 where just "lying" doesn't work at all, but instead backfires. An easy one is Helldivers 2 armor bug where it just wasn't working.
They said they fixed it - it wasn't - and the sentiment got even worse overall.
However, the point of this comment is the (*) marked sections: devs should seriously invest some time into creating a simple system that actually tracks feedback, because a dumbass's feedback is only useful in finding out what a dumbass might spew at any given moment.

There is also an infamous patch in league of legends were they were going to buff a character named Vladimir because he had 47% winrate and according to the playerbase it was the worst champion and needed serious buffs. Patch notes were released with all the "buffs" and everybody started using that champ making it reach 51% winrate. A few weeks later Riot announced that the buffs for Vladimir were never actually applied to the game.
So basically people got better playing the champion with just a placebo patch. Why did the champion got 47% winrate? Because good players avoided using it based on overall playerbase stats. Once good players started picking him again and getting good with him its winrate stabilized.
In just a few wordst the whole Vladimir incident could be resumed as; the character didnt need any buffs but the playerbase needed to learn how to play it before asking for buffs.
From that day RIOT only surveys champion feedback with the top 1% of players. Yup, they do survey, but casual/bad players dont get to vote because they are bad at the game.

like when shroud got nerfed because in the hightest echelions of lol yone was a niche abuser of it. thats irrelevant for like 99,99x of the entire playerbase.
mundo is completely average in my elo for example but an ungodly low elo stomper.
bro almost hit 55% winrate in iron/bronze/silver at some point and even now still well above 53% with bruisers getting good item buffs.
that on the other hand is impacting more than 55% of the whole playerbase.
its often times kinda tricky to balance around both groups and for some champs (in lol anyways) simply impossible but you kinda have to do both to some extend. and i mean riot does lol.

TBH thinking back on that, it sort of worked as a skill diffuser but wasn't ideal when you didn't have enough players over multiple skill tiers, and also with lower skill levels would basically be confined to making their own bot servers.

The thing is, if the bug is not or hardly reproducible, there's not much you can do about it. People have no idea the level of complexity that goes in modern video games : in software when any system gets to big, you end up losing control of what the hell is going on.
I don't work in video games but I imagine if you tell a dev that his changes created a bug for something else that's controlled by unrelated code he's never seen, and he realises the problem cannot be found without going through the entire 100k lines codebase... Well he's just gonna ignore your complaints.
Also I suppose sometimes you have bugs that were there before, but they show up randomly, so you wrongly think it comes from the new release when you see thoses for the first time, but maybe it comes from the player/tester playing in a different way for whatever reason.

I remember on one map i think it was cs dock. people complained about the boxes not being high enough and you could shoot over them, over time they raised the boxes and made the larger and larger over time and people still complained about the boxes like nothing ever happened. Then ofc you had the bug where if you duck behind abox and stood up you could then see over it. that was done on purpose if i remember correctly just to piss of the people complaining about the box sizes lol.

That ping "fix" reminds me of something GM dealt with in the 80s with one of their new cars. You know how lots of cars will have the gas gauge point at the "F" mark for quite a while after filling up and then drop quickly? Well, one new model Buick didn't have that; the gauge was extremely accurate. They immediately got loads of complaints about poor fuel economy. Their fix was to reset the way the gauge worked to be inaccurate the way previous ones were. It worked perfectly and complaints stopped.
Also the complaints after every fix in general feels really familiar. I work in tech support and I know mechanics are familiar with this as well: No matter what totally unrelated thing I've worked on, if *anything* goes wrong within a few weeks of me having been there I'll get an "ever since you touched it" complaint. Reset a password and a few days later their monitor starts glitching occasionally? "Ever since you messed with my account my display is acting up!"

To be fair to the community, in CSGO there was a huge hitreg issue that was simply caused by the viewmodel being slightly off-center, which is a bit too ridiculous coming from fucking VALVE, the godfathers of first person shooters. Hell, the term "getting CS:GO'd" was born from that.
To be fair to the devs, when professional players complained about those hitreg issues, some members of the community still had the nerve to pretty much say "skill issue, git gud" to some of the best players in the world who competed in million-dollar tournaments because "CSGO is perfect in any way".

This reminded me of a story from the Ottoman period. The Sultan had built a mosque. When he asked the villagers how the mosque was, a grumpy old man said that the minaret was crooked. The sultan came to the man and looked at it from his point of view. The minaret was not crooked at all. But he doesn't say anything to the old man and gathers volunteers and they pull the minaret with a rope. He asks the old man, "Is it fixed now?" The old man says, "Yes, it is now." But the Sultan never thought that the minaret would be fixed with a rope from the very beginning. But sometimes pretending to do something can be more useful than doing nothing.

    • @huldu
      @huldu Год назад +4

It's something you get used to, the latency that is. If you have ~200 latency like back in the modem days you get used to that. However when you drop below 25 that's when things get insane. That's a point where a bad player might actually become decent and a good player become a god. Of course it all depends on what type of game etc but generally speaking if it's a first person shooter the lower latency you have the better. Having anything above 100ms latency just feels janky and laggy compared to under 50.

In a statistic class i took, we learned about the problem with the Shuffle on the first ipod.
the shuffle feature was a true simple RNG option on your ipod. You click shuffle, and every new song will be randomly selected, including the very small chance of the song looping.
of course, people dont understand this and end up complaining "this shuffle option doesnt shuffle enough, its been looping the same few songs and sometimes it plays the same song twice" not realizing thats how random chaos works, youre not OWED a new song just because you haven't heard it in awhile (you would find this same fallacy among gambling addicts). So Apple then opted for a randomizer but calculates priority for songs that haven't been played in awhile to get higher odds. Then they simplified this by making a pre-made setlist of all your songs but in a random order.
