This is great content. So many archers are such purists about their equipment that they never stop to ask if the functionality of various accessories suits their needs.
Back in the early 70's a lot of us were shooting wood recurves. I shot Bob Lee Wing recurves. I have a two piece Presentation II and a one piece Presentation I, which were both wood bows, and I still shoot the Presentation II. Some of the guy's were shooting Carol bow which were aluminus riser bows. Don't know that anyone would recognize the names but I shot with Pat Norris, Butch Rockford, Bill Dahl and several other guy's that were PAA members. We all shot those old Hoyt Pro Rests which were a stick on flipper rest with a hole in them for the berger button plunger to stick through. Those old rests were amazing. Eventually the flipper arm would break but it took a lot of shots to wear one out and they were really cheap. One nice thing about them was that one would break you would just take a spare spare out of your quiver and put it on and because they had to line up with the berger button hole they were automatically lined up and you could go right back to shooting.
For years I have always shot off of the shelf on all of my wood Trad bows, a but lately now have raised rests (Bear/Hoyt) on my bows while shooting 3 under with good results. They seemed to make a difference for all the reasons you have stated, I just didn't realize it until this video, Thanks!
I see so many videos of people using fifteen different sights, mechanical releases, super short bows. It’s good to see instinctive archery still out there.
Jeff what I have found with a flipper rest and plunger is they are not as critical of spine as shooting off the shelf. The other issue is that if a person has a lot of cant to the bow the groups tend to be high and right with a flipper rest. Lastly if the shooter has a lot of downward pressure from their shooting form they tend to wear the plastic sleeve on the wire very quickly. I think that if someone is struggling with good arrow flight off of the shelf it’s a great alternative to try. Thanks for sharing!🙏
Old recurve shooter here...I wore out many of the Hoyt Pro rests on wooden recurves. I still have two new ones in their original plastic boxes. Another thing I've noticed about elevated rests. I can always eliminate most any arrow flight issues by using an elevated rest. I had a setup recently that just would not stop shooting nock high. I ran the nock point to extremes up and down. I was using a Bear standard rug rest. I swapped that out for a Bear Weather Rest and instantly got perfect arrow flight. I shoot left handed and use left wing feathers.

I have shot the very inexpensive bear weather rest for years. The bottom can be trimmed off to get it closer to the shelf. It's a simple stick on with no adjustment, but allows me to get much better flight when bareshaft tunning. I've also had a few bows that couldn't get rid of a nock high until an elevated rest was put on.
Jeff, Great video. One important thing I have found hunting more that 50 years with a recurve from a treestand when it’s freezing cold is I prefer shooting off the shelf. Less chance of the arrow falling off the rest while drawing. The accuracy is comparable up to 15 yards which is 90+ % of my shots here in the big woods of mid-central Pennsylvania. I never had a deer complain about my setup! lol!
I’ve always shot off the shelf myself and it is bulletproof lol but with these aluminum rigs they’re really nice, I’m still tinkering with arrow tuning! We’ll see how it goes 😁
Jeff I don't think the arrow is any closer to your eye. Your anchor is in the exact spot with or without the elevated rest and the height of the front of the arrow has to be in the exact spot with or without the elevated rest for you to hit your spot . The difference is in the fact that the arrow is up above your hand more out in the wide open verses right on top of your hand and down on that shelf. That is why it shows up more in your peripheral vision. Arrow height has to be the same. Love your videos. Thanks for all of them.
Great videos. I am VI ( Visually Impaired.) I have been watching your videos, and I bought a recurve to start shooting. I grew up hunting with a rifle and really want to get into archery. Thank you.
I always use a rest. It gives clear vision of the arrow tip. Instinctive is ok for short distances but been proven not so much for long distances, so in that logic even for an Instinctive archer they could shoot further more accurately.
Ive been using elevated rests on all my recurves for at least the last 15 years. On my woid recurves i use the Hoyt stick on. My Hoyt Olympic TD has the NAP. I totally agree on your idea of being more accurate with a elevated rest.

I use the NAP Flipper elevated rest on my ILF recurve (threaded), and I have a Bear Weather rest on one of recurves and the rest of my recurves I shoot off the shelf. Slightly better when using the NAP rest.
I was having an absolute nightmare trying to bare shaft tune one of my black hunter bows. Tried a stick on bear weather rest just out of curiosity for 5$ and was amazed. It made a huge difference in accuracy and made tuning so much easier. I would like to put one on my bear montana but there isn't much room above the shelf for it to fit good. I might try one of the NAP adhesive rests now instead of the bear weather rest. Great video man!
My 19" ILF riser has a mounted on the bow radius shelf. It's metal or aluminum with a black shammy material that covers that whole inside of the riser too. My 25" Olympic riser is the one that I mounted the NAP Flipper to yesterday. I like the draw of it better cuz it just seems smoother. I did feel like i was hitting about 4" higher on average. But I need to shoot it more but i usually see only my knuckle holding on my grip & now i am seeing the arrow a little easier. I also need to put my limbs from the 25" onto the 19" riser. That will help my arrow flight & i do wish that the NAP had a plunger included since i have 2 threaded holes on that 25" riser.😮😅
i had one of my bows with both off the shelf and right above that a stick on ,using the same nock for both,off the rug out to about 30yds off the stick on past that and that seemed to make up the distance in the drop of the arrow, worked great for me
I used the same rest when I begun getting into Trad, and I used to shoot really well with it, on a Samick Sage. Then I went to shooting off the shelf because, well, everyone else was saying "shoot off the shelf" - so I started shooting off the shelf, my shooting got worse😂😂😂 my form issues were amplified and I realised I wasn't as good a shot as I thought lol I still shoot off the shelf with all my Bows. I did shoot that old Samick Sage a few times with the NAP flipper rest, and sure enough I was shooting like a legend again. I did consider putting an elevated rest on my new Hermit X10, but I'm shooting that off the shelf, but it does shoot like I'm using an elevated rest, plus if my form collapses slightly, I get wanderers, so I'm guessing I'm in the best of both worlds at the moment, shooting nicely and still have to pay attention to my form. I found the NAP flipper to be an excellent elevated rest at an excellent price, simple and easily replaced without retuning required. I still have that rest, and spares, in my archery Box, I couldn't part with it even though I'm not using it lol
@@ThirdLawPair Pro's; greater accuracy, more forgiving to form, tight groups, more consistent shooting. Con's would be the Ego deflation of not shooting off the shelf lol
@@brettellis423 Interesting. So many bowhunters either go maximum high-tech compounds or bare-bones simple trad gear. So, I figured there must be some advantage of shooting off the shelf. (though of course there is always an ego factor with both extremes).
@@ThirdLawPair the advantage of shooting off the shelf compared to elevated rest, as far as I can discern, is simplicity, very little set up and maintenance, less chance of the arrow coming off the rest once nocked, and therefore no attention required. An elevated rest can often required being looked at to make sure the arrow is mounted correctly, and that's a bit unproductive in hunting situations considering we focus on the game, and for that reason alone I'd choose to shoot off the shelf rather than an elevated rest in hunting conditions.
I have primarily shot an elevated rest on my recurves. I recently started shooting off the shelf because I bought a new Black widow. However, I think I’m going to go back to the elevated rest I have shot. The best stick on elevated rest ever made was the old Hoyt Pro Flex rest which NEET made one for a few years but stopped making there’s also. So I learned how to make them myself out of a milk jug, leather and double sided tape. I wanna see your video of the stick on version.
I shoot off the shelf on my ilf riser but i built it up with leather so that it effectively holds an arrow at the same height as if i were to use a rest. Clay hayes talked about that in one of his vids and it achieves the same purpose - so u can get the arrow closer to eye level and have it more prominent in the sight picture. I wouldnt doubt that the elevated rest is more accurate, but having the leather rest and strike plate adds to the “trad” aesthetic (even tho im using an aluminum riser 😬)
I shoot an elevated rest on all my Trad and bare bows. I just add a one quarter inch strip of leather glued on the shelf and a strike plate on the sight window. I leave space in between the strike plate and elevated rest for the fletching to have clearance to go through. Been doing this for years..
Of the stick of rests I have tried the Hoyt Hunter rest is the best. I like it better than the Bear Weather rest. I also love the original Springy rest which has been around 40 years is still made. It's the most forgiving rest of bad form you can buy.
Im gona try one of those salinda bows,, I started out with a old bear and a box of very differnt arrows long short heavy, light Im gona try doing things the right way by watching you ive found im lacking in knowledge severly Thank you sir.
The nap flipper rest may or may not fit all hunting ilf bows. Some risers just don't have the risers cut well past center enough. Then you're way past the outside of the center of the riser.
yup! I have one ( Hoyt hunter) on my PSE Razorback...works great.... you can alwasy take a wood rasp and make a deeper arrow shlef if you fell the need...
Hey Jeff, great content, your arrow looks pretty much level before your shot (rest & nock point level), not like the 5/8” nock high when shooting off the shelf, is this the case?
Jeff, since the arrow is sitting higher on the riser and string, is that putting more pressure on the top limb? Maybe not pressure but possible different balance point ? Having a ilf system, would you have to go positive tiller while shooting 3 under? Just curious. God bless

I have 3 ILF bows and all are setup with stick on wire rests and cushion plungers. The stick on rests are thinner allowing for easy center shot setup and are adjustable up and down and in and out. My Hermit X10 and Hoyt Satori are setup that way. The cushion plunger helps for fine tuning the arrow spine. My arrows shoot like darts even though I am only shooting 35lbs with 340 gr arrows ( 700 Gold Tip Warriors).
You’re taking the letters TRAD out of traditional when you do something like that. I don’t consider a metal riser in the true TRAD class. Too much to confuse so many that don’t know which way is up these days as it is. Let’s leave well enough alone.
Persians had metal handle, take down bows 600 years ago. They didn't have fiberglass laminate, B50 dacron strings, or 21st century adhesives to put it all together. Your modern bow isn't as traditional as you think.
not EVERYONE shooting a so called "traditional bow" can shoot off the shelf....not all of us can "gap shoot" you owe it to yourself ( and the animal you are hunting) to find ways to shoot well- regardless of it "not being traditional" ( how about those plasctic nocks, store bought heads, modern glues, epoxys, etc-they ain't traditional either)

Its actually impressive. Great channel.....
I have the stick on model on my Sanlida X9 takedown and I like it. I don't care if I'm shooting traditional style or not. I don't understand why it should matter to anyone what style anyone else shoots. It just seems snobby to judge anybody on how they shoot. I've even thought about putting a D loop and using a mechanical release on one of my recurve bows just to see if it improves my shooting. Anything I can do to improve my odds of making a clean kill is a plus imo. I basically put the flipper on so I could shoot vanes or feathers since I have way more arrows with vanes.
We Shouldn't Judge Anybody of How they Shoot any Kind of Archery ! I'm Big in to Traditional and have compounds and crossbows too ! I can Tune all three and have a lot of Friends and New Archers stop by wanting me to help in there tuning and shooting problems . I Believe its a God Given Talent to Help Our Fellow Brothers out in all types of Archery ! Jeff has the Same God Given Talent !

Some people say that shooting off the shelf is quieter. Have you ever noticed a difference?

Other than the end result of better accuracy, what are the big pros and cons you have noticed with using a rest? I've never tried one before.

So Jeff. Which NAP rest for T Bow riser. It has 30# and 45# limbs. I want to put a rest on a Hermit X 10 also. The selection is very broad.

Shot them more than 30 yrs ago NAP CENTER REST. finger pressure is very sensitive, shooting downward.

I have 3 ILF bows and all are setup with stick on wire rests and cushion plungers. The stick on rests are thinner allowing for easy center shot setup and are adjustable up and down and in and out. My Hermit X10 and Hoyt Satori are setup that way. The cushion plunger helps for fine tuning the arrow spine. My arrows shoot like darts even though I am only shooting 35lbs with 340 gr arrows ( 700 Gold Tip Warriors).

I like shooting off center shelf so I can cant bow and shoot. You can't do that with elevated rest

You’re taking the letters TRAD out of traditional when you do something like that. I don’t consider a metal riser in the true TRAD class. Too much to confuse so many that don’t know which way is up these days as it is. Let’s leave well enough alone.
Persians had metal handle, take down bows 600 years ago. They didn't have fiberglass laminate, B50 dacron strings, or 21st century adhesives to put it all together. Your modern bow isn't as traditional as you think.
not EVERYONE shooting a so called "traditional bow" can shoot off the shelf....not all of us can "gap shoot" you owe it to yourself ( and the animal you are hunting) to find ways to shoot well- regardless of it "not being traditional" ( how about those plasctic nocks, store bought heads, modern glues, epoxys, etc-they ain't traditional either)

@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 keep the videos coming great content....i love your channel.....gets me excited about archery when i start getting bored with it......i absolutely am amazed at these affordable bows coming out.....i kinda have a love hate opinion of them but its hard to deny......i got to shoot one of 3rivers longbows the other day and it was pretty nice......i just have no ideah how bowyers will compete......i just finished building a longbow with a friend and i have more in glue and sandpaper than the price.....lol. im not joking in any way......the phenolic i beam is literally the best thing i have seen in my entire life for reducing handshock and making a bow dead still. Its actually impressive. Great channel.....
I have the stick on model on my Sanlida X9 takedown and I like it.
I don't care if I'm shooting traditional style or not. I don't understand why it should matter to anyone what style anyone else shoots. It just seems snobby to judge anybody on how they shoot.
I've even thought about putting a D loop and using a mechanical release on one of my recurve bows just to see if it improves my shooting. Anything I can do to improve my odds of making a clean kill is a plus imo.
I basically put the flipper on so I could shoot vanes or feathers since I have way more arrows with vanes.
I'm ready to put an arrow rest on my Eagle X9, too. I also thought about d-looping, why not! Great minds think alike, blessings.
We Shouldn't Judge Anybody of How they Shoot any Kind of Archery !
I'm Big in to Traditional and have compounds and crossbows too !
I can Tune all three and have a lot of Friends and New Archers stop by wanting me to help in there tuning and shooting problems .
I Believe its a God Given Talent to Help Our Fellow Brothers out in all types of Archery !
