In this Can't Stop guitar lesson video I will demonstrate how to play all of this funky Red Hot Chili Peppers smash hit note-for-note.
Guitarist John Frusciante starts the song off with some subdued hammer-ons that gradually build in tension. He then begins to pick the notes right before he launches into the main riff of the song.
That main riff is pure Frusciante, funky, tight and fun to play. It may take a little bit of practice to assure that you are muting all the notes required during the entire riff. John Frusciante is for the most part doing some pretty large strums but keeps the main melody notes popping out due to the fact that he is heavily muting all the other strings.
This technique can be a little difficult to do correctly at first. The use of the thumb on the low E string can also give a lot of players a challenge. To make the thumb position a bit more comfortable try moving the inside of your wrist towards your face. This slight adjustment really helps the thumb achieve the optimal placement required to play notes on the low E string.
After the main riff we make it to the chorus. Once again there are lot's chords where Frusciante uses his thumb on the low E string. The C major 7th at the very end of this chord progression can be especially awkward. Once gain, experiment with positioning of your picking hand wrist to better facilitate playing these chords cleanly.
The bridge of the song is reggae influenced with accents on the upbeats and quick chord muting. The nice thing about this section is that for the most part, John Frusciante doesn't use his fret hand thumb to play any bass notes.
This bridge section also includes another guitar layer using arpeggiated triads through liberal amounts of guitar effects. I will demonstrate that guitar part as well in the video lesson.
To end this lesson we will then take a look at the guitar solo. Frusciante keeps everything relatively simple here using just whole step bends and simple melodies.
I think this Can't Stop guitar lesson would be great for any intermediate level player or higher. It does provide some challenging rhythm guitar parts that just about any player would find valuable to practice.
Enjoy!!
Carl..
The muting makes me want to commit toaster-bath
Just like in Fear and loathing? :D
@@lizardking2054 fucking legendary movie
I’ve never laughed so hard at a RUclips comment lol. Well done
@@andrewrobert5019I giggled pretty hard as well
I could practice this song every day of my life and I’d die before I ever got it.
InRareForm I used to think exactly that, but after some time it just comes naturally. Don't give up brotha
Agree, It looks so easy at first sight (it's 6 freaking notes) but then you realize it's so fucking hard to make properly clean notes with all the muting going on, either you fail in giving the right muting "background" or in playing clean notes. Drives me mad. Can't even think how John can do that while moving/dancing on the stage
Check this out, it's basically how Frusciante plays it and it's a MUCH easier and fun way imo: ruclips.net/video/a7PqkPp8k38/видео.html
I know it’s in spanish but just look how he mutes the chords and his strumming.
@eniatsuM evaD That's how I've seen him play in every live performance
eniatsuM evaD Frusciante strums all the chords when playing this riff, that's how he's played it in every performance and even in the music video
It’s hard at first, but once your learn the technic and play with feel, the funkiness gets unleashed.
John really strikes the strings. It sounds better if you use a strumming motion instead of picking it
agreed
agreeed
tfw the solo is the easiest part of the song.
The notes are easy, but it's kinda hard to get the right feeling for this solo (as well as for the rest of the song), in my opinion.
LeChocdesGitans nailed it
@@Wellan38 hell jah.
Tfw you can play neon by john mayer but not this
It's important to make your own solo
Hi Carl, I am a music teacher as well and just wanted to thank you for taking the time to post your videos. Great player, instructor and inspiration.
The muting is really hard
MrJohnny56789 You know its really not hard to come up with something original. No ones going to laugh at your joke from 2007. If you were even born then.
@@TheSectric what? I know this is from a year ago but I dont understand your comment🤣
@@nathancarr4692 probably replying to someone who seems to have removed their comment...
Practice all you can do it will come in time try with not playing this riff and go back to it
What I do is that i just use my pointer finger to mute the rest of the strings
Searched your channel and yes you’ve covered this awesome song. It’s like you’ve taught all the songs that anyone would ever want to learn. And yet each week more keep coming. Can’t wait to start learning this one next.
Could you lovely people vote this comment as a request for Slow Dancing in a burning room by John Mayer? Much appreciated!!
well you got it
Awesome lessons as always, definitely some of the best out there on you tube. I would however really appreciate just a little more insight into how to achieve the sound for each lesson / artist as I feel that's something that's overlooked in most lessons on the web. It would be extremely beneficial for someone like me who's really progressed with their technique but would still love to improve their knowledge in effects and achieving sounds used.
Once again though, awesome vids and extremely greatful.
Thanks!
Matt
Matty Lowe u
Marty music didn’t do the thumb thing so here I am
this video was rockin, UNTIL HE STOPPED!! Yeah this song is in my repertoire. Its great watching these vids to see if i learned it right, or missing chords. this song just jams so hard.
You should do a lesson for The Zephyr Song by The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Dude, love the "Great Divide" acoustic guitar in the background. Fantastic affordable acoustic.
Great, mate! Very well done! Thanks for sharing!
John Frusciante is back
really great lesson and such a fun song to play once you get the hang of it!!!
Thank you so much and If you can have more RHCP lessons
THANKS for the tutorial.
thanks Carl for your lessons, they are the best👍
Thanks loads for this mate!
0:30 when you realize someone was watching you the whole time you were noodling on your guitar
tnx bro, you're awesome!
best no non sense lessons on the web,,THANKS
Playing the song before the demonstration really help me get the vibe of the song before you break it down, I know it's a old video, but it's new to me!
Dude you are seriously the best teacher on RUclips thank you!
great lesson!! Can you upload scar tissue?
thanks a lot for the lesson
The muting is hard as fuck. Great lesson though!
did you get it down? im gonna start learning this tomorrow
+marcusfsproductions yeah, it's not that difficult if you practice enough. But instead of open D, try playing it with the 5th fret the of A string. I think it's better to play it like that at first if you wanna get used to strumming all the strings the way John does.
***** ahh cool! appreciate the tips :) im gonna start in a few minutes
Yes is is lol
playing the D as 10th fret of the E string is easier too for less hand movement and is still easy to mute
Frusciante is one of my favorite guitar players. I am not a big fan of Funk based music, but I do like some. With RHCP being one of those. Still some of the best Funk songs were made back in the 60's and 70's. Funkadelics and Isley Brothers being the best (in my opinion) as far as Funk Guitar. Thanks for the lesson and a BIG thumb's UP!!!
solo starts at 11:40
Lmao thanks Kurt
I Can't stop playing this😂
I guess you’re addicted to the shindig
BALLS
Wish I would of learned this song earlier so awesome and fun to play. Thanks Carl!
Wow is fantastic thanks men
Thanks man. You're a my favorite
Thanks for the support Radik!
6:10 “and then that same Cmaj 7th without the thumb, yay” haha I felt that
You make learning easier to where even I can understand it lol 😂 Thanks for doing it ,could you do something say like people of the lie ? From kreator ? Old school metal thanks again .
Thanks. !!
Terima Kasih Lessonnya (y)
Awesome
Great lesson, thanks....wondered if you could do a lesson for Supermassive Black Hole by Muse?
your videos are great!
i agree
Thank you.
Just, dude, thank you so much, this really helped me
can you explain more about how to get the Frusciante sound on the guitar amp?
I have a BOSS Katana and I'm trying to get similar sound. Thanks for the great tutorial!
I found a thread in ultimate guitar with amp tunings for a lot of bands - www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=688660&highlight=mick+jones+amp
the john frusciante tune is reverb 7, gain 4, trebele 8, mid 2, bass 6. I tried it and it sound realy good
He doesn't tune right?
Never mind can't stop, I can't go damn start!
I think the opening d-e are both picked on the record?
scar tissue- RHCP pls
thank you
Hey Carl, if there is any possibility, could you do a lesson for Carousel by Buckcherry? It's such a good song, but there aren't any videos on it, and the tabs are inaccurate. I would really appreciate it. KEEP ROCKIN'!!
thx m8
those chords are fkn hard
I don't think the muting is impossible. I don't play it like this, though. I don't use the thumb. I change which fingers are playing the g string based on what feels like it makes sense off the other note being fretted. Explore on your own, mileage can vary.
For the chorus you can use G D A C
What amp do you have?
SCAR TISSUE PLEASEEE
How to get more sustain and scream in the solo, is John using pinch harmonics?
I think that it's an aggressive attack with mutting
How do you get your tone?
fuzz i'd say
can you please do some songs by dream theater? there are no lessons for their songs
Ahhhhh my thumb
Do someone know what kind of pedal John use during the song?
@will micro amp. Holy grail reverb.
Ds2. Chorus CE-1
Why play e minor chord on 12th fret instead 7 on A?
Anyone happen to know the amp settings? I do hear a bit of reverb.
ᴠ ɪ ʀ ᴛ ᴜ ᴀ ʟ ʜ ᴏ ᴛ ʟ ɪ ɴ ᴇ reverb and if you have a compression peddle
Nice reverb
Awesome to play when you don't have a thumb anymore:(
john wayne wait what
???
its kinda hard to play guitar without a thumb.. but good luck
I have a thumb but i just played it hand floating
@@januszwu973 i agree with you
can it be done with cort x6
Ofcourse it can
I dont why people say its so hard with the muting i am playing guitar for a year almost and i could play it wiht the rhythm correctly in just 2 days with correct muting
John Frusciante is the best
Well that changes me from Kirk Hammett solos...
Beautiful though
How to get that sound if using Vox mini 5? I only have that amp :c
+Katyusha Voroshilov get an overdrive pedal that helps
+stephan van der woerd thx !
i love you carl
This riff is deceptively evil :)
He has my old guitar
does it make you feel nostalgic
What are these chord shapes…
More RHCP like Snow
what kind of monster is fruciante
I cant even do the bridge of the song its hard
this song is so easy yall are tripping🧍
Fret wraps were designed for this song! 😂
Guitar ?
Edisnoow probably Strat
why this shit is harder than snow to me
I've always wanted to play the guitar but the beginning always seemed so slow and frustrating
Agastya because it is
But youcisian will change your life
With just a simple purchase of 9 dollars and 99 cents
Is this E standard tuning?
No just standard
I guess he meant the standard tuning is usually called A, referring to the fifth string
I practiced the muting technique first, this is hard for me lol 2:37
My hands are too small for the freaking chords in the chorussss ahhhhh
Man, I thought I had the hard part done when I finally got used to the muting, then those fucked up chord shapes came in and now my fingers hurt
Is this originally what the guitarist plays?
In RHCP?
+Steven Garcia no , on this song john uses heavily muting , and he strikes all the strings , and doesn't play the individual notes like carl does here
@@shcxatter2 John doesn't strikes all the strings (might look so tho) but only the ones that give the note plus probably the nearest ones which he's muting. No need to mute 5 strings when you can mute only 3
@@micheleschenetti7791 when you get good at muting, it becomes almost second nature, and it's not hard at all, also there is a video of John explaining his playing, a he says it himself , that he mutes all strings!
Frusciante’s way is the easiest and most fun way to play this song, idk why would someone do it the other way lol
Hate barring it sucks but gotta get used to it
How to cheat on muting: play guitar wearing a shirt with long sleeves, it should help at least a bit. If it doesn't help, don't worry, you're here because you like the song but it doesn't need to sound perfectly like recording, it should sound the way you like it, improvise and don't be too self critical. Have a nice day/night.
None of these videos go over literally the only important thing which is how to do the muting. The notes are simple. Nobody explains the muting other than “there’s a lot of muting”. Every video!!
The muting makes me wanna die
How to stop can't play
I hate that thumb thing over the guitar neck.
Must be done on computer, it’s impossible to mute more than one string 🤷🏽♂️
i swear hes dropped his D string down half a step to make this easier?
R no he hasn't
