Today parents shoulder so little of the responsibility for their children they honestly look to schools to do everything while simultaneously stripping the resources of the very institutions that were designed to educate and not facilitate health care management, behavioral health, homelessness, food shortages, providing schools supplies and then to top it all off teachers and staff members are punching bags for everyone who then says "Well, teachers don't really do their jobs anyway but always want more money". What other profession makes these types of expectations and don't provide the necessary resources? Doctors get specialized training and a large salary. Therapists get specialized training and a large salary. The first time that I shot a gun was at age 6. It was a Ruger Mk 2 .22 caliber semiautomatic pistol. I grew up with guns. My father didn’t have a gun safe, he had a gun room. He had a collection that was close to 200 firearms. There were a couple of AR-15s in the collection as well. I also had to qualify with various firearms when I was in the military. With all that exposure to firearms I’ve never had the urge to shoot anyone.
I don’t know where you live but there are parts of this country that are extremely rural. Kids under the age of 18 go out hunting on their own. Guns are also used for pest control. Some of those pests are hogs and coyotes. A center fire cartridge is required for those types of animals. Kids under 18 years of age are expected to help out around the farm or ranch and part of that includes shooting hogs and coyotes. So yeah, kids under 18 do have reasons to be carrying guns and using them. It’s just how it is.

Interesting how JD Vance supports his argument about gun control by comparing the different approach to gun laws in different regions of America. However, he ignores how little gun violence there is in other *countries* with strict gun laws. Australia actually addressed mass shootings by essentially banning large numbers of rapid-fire guns and instituting other major restrictions in 1996. They have had only one mass shooting event since.

@@kristawelch3821 If you grew up in Wyoming then you know that under 18 year olds use guns for hunting, target shooting, pest control, etc. on a regular basis. That’s just life in a rural area.
You raised your children without letting them use firearms. I don’t have any issues with that.
The problem that I have is that most of the people commenting here can’t understand why any teenager would be allowed to use a gun. They think that being raised in a city or suburb is the same as being raised in a rural area. It’s just not the same. There are a lot of kids raised on a farm that are operating tractors and combines at an early age. They also learn to use firearms at an early age. Millions of young people have learned how to shoot firearms throughout our country’s history. Millions of them have also never used them to shoot up a school.
The point that I want to make is that doing an across the board ban of under 18 year olds using firearms will not work. Nor will trying to pass a nationwide ban on the ownership of AR type firearms. They’re just to ubiquitous in America at this point. The political situation won’t allow for it. There are some things that should be done. universal background checks and red flag laws come to mind. IMO improving access to mental healthcare would also help with the problem. We just have to be realistic about what can get done right now vs. what will not happen any time soon.

If the child was disturbed and you had the gun in the house in a safe that they broke into...which would be impressive if you have ever seen a gun safe...then perhaps just negligence because the father didn't NEED that gun. Also he could lock up ammo in a different place. OR store it at a gun club or shooting range or with another gun owner without a disturbed child in the home. Years ago a buddy of mine once took a shotgun from a friend because his friend had discussed self harm and being depressed. He locked it up in his gun safe and told his friend that once he got some help and was in a better mental state then he would give it back. His friend went along with it and it helped to push him to get the help he needed because my buddy had shown him how serious it was. If a friend can do that for another adult why couldn't a father do that for a son...who is 14... instead he did the opposite, that is criminal.

Kids can be natural thiefs and hackers. I think a parent should be held accountable, but It comes down to the context of the crime and how the child got the weapon in the first place. If a parent can prove without reasonable doubt that they kept their weapons away from their child, then they should not be convicted. But if the kid gets their gun out of a damn shoe box under the bed, then yeah the parent should be held accountable."

There’s a huge difference in life styles between living in a city, the suburbs, and a rural area. I’ve lived in all three. Most people in America have never lived in a rural area. Where I live right now has a higher density of cattle per square mile than people. If there are any issues on my property I expect the fastest response time from LEO to be, at the very best, 15 minutes. That’s the quickest that i think that they’ll get here. In the meantime I want to be armed well enough to at least have a fighting chance. That is why I own an AR type firearm with high capacity magazines.
25 and over?? Really? You’re painting with a pretty broad brush. I grew up with firearms in the house. I was under 25 when I went in to the military and had to qualify with various types of weapons. I’ve never had the urge to shoot anyone.

From Germany. We don´t have many people owning guns. Hunters and sportshooters are armed, and of course police and army people. We have very strict laws concerning how to deal with weaponsmif they are not in use and of course when in use. As a mother of four boys , my kids all had knifes with a "standing" blade, when they were quite young 6 years onwards. This might sound silly to you, but the first thing we (parents) did was showing them how to use it propperly, respectfully, trustworthy. We talked about what can be done and what one shouldn´t do, like running around. We both were convinced by discussions and talks, that our kids took our instructions seriously, that they understood the responsibility , that is included in being "weaponized ". But still several minor accidents did happen throughout the years , we were lucky! I would deal the same way , but guns ? Seriously? Not for me , not for my kids, I´m not in a war zone, I´m not in a dangerous surrounding with dangerous people. I´m no shooter or hunter , so why should I have a gun?

So if a parent gave a 14 year old child a set of car keys (knowing that it was below the age to have it) and that child gets behind the wheel and kills someone - wouldn’t the parent be responsible?
The entitlement and selfishness of people to value THEIR desire to own something rather than the betterment of all is so disappointing. It’s costing lives.

Close schools there just places in cases with thousands of students who are housed together 5 days a week. Technology allows new non institutional schooling for most kids. Todays large schools are much like prisons and baby sitting centers .

      CNN look at those stats:
      1) PRESERVE DEMOCRACY = TRUMP
      2) ECONOMY = TRUMP ERA COVID RESIDUAL
      3) SUPREME COURT = TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP
      4) INFLATION = COVID STIMULUS CHECKS FROM TRUMP AND BIDEN
      5) IMMIGRATION = TRUMP AND BIDEN
      6) ABORTION = TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP
      7) GUN VIOLENCE = REPUBLICAN MAGA TRUMP
So 5 of the 7 are 100% TRUMP created problems, distractions and only 2 are trump biden issues but from the trump era.
THIS IS PROOF that trumps 4 years intentionally caused so much chaos that we can no longer focus on teh real things that matter.
WE should not be focused on democracy ...that should not be a thing in america...but it is because of trump!!!

14 can't even get a work permit. Carry a assualt rifle... 2A all day. Imagine rationalizing that your teenager is a member of a well regulated militia. Logic has no place in this conversation will be how this all settles out in the end.

I have been asking everyone the same questions. Why are some Parents buying their teenagers a Guns/Rifles, some are even buying explosives. And they take the young kids out to the Shooting Range for target practice. This looks like someone, somewhere, is preparing for War and the Children are being Sacrificed.

Haven’t seen the vid, but I hope this black republican guy is reasonable today. He used to be, but it feels like he’s been asked to take the republican side more lately, which is fine, but I’ve found him to be a more sobering figure in past years, and criticize others, while being honest and objective about the side he represents.
