Ola, thanks for these clips. They are mega helpful for those of us producing stuff from home on a budget. Bass was an area I wasn't familiar with but I'll try this technique soon and see where it gets me. Certainly makes a lot of sense to HP/LP the bass in order to make it gel in the mix with the guitars. Keep up the great work! Loving the comedic presentation as well.
gods, these are the best tuts, so quick and clear, full of power tips. specially the compressor part. very practical. usually people love to obfuscate when it comes to compressors. so uncool. a compressor tut, touching on most mix elements would be sweet. thanks for sharing!
the thing i love about these videos is that they are so simple and just have the whole mind set of "just fucking do it.." and it works.. thanks for that bro. its about time someone puts just a simple video up that works.
@tango616 Because he is also using a seperate track of the bass just clean, so when you blend the 2 tracks it will sound way different than just listening to the distorted track by itself. You hear the crazy distortion but you still get the distinct tone of what is being played by the clean track.
@TheMetalhead804 No Logic Pro is extra dough. No you can't do as much in Garageband. BUT you can do a lot in Logic Express with is a cheap version of Logic Pro.
Thanks Ola/Mel Gibson for the tutorial, I'm noob in recording and never could make a bass sound good in a mix, I've done this with a downpitched guitar today and It worked pretty well!
Lol. That's pretty much how it's done in heavier lower tuned tracks. Good straight to the point. And it works almost every time! Thanks dude. Btw the new S by solar guitars and basses are sick for the $. I think others are going to be really stepping up their game now.
In my opinion, it's simply that the kick sits in lower freq. than the bass, try to slightly (slightly) boost the bass at 90 hz or so and the kick at 50hz or so, they will sound stronger in those separate freq. (hopefully). I also like to boost some treble for the kick so it has that "clicking" sound to it. the cymbals, around 3000 hz or so, or over that. The guitars and vocals, in between those low and hi freq. (these values or just off my head, play around to find the best sounding to you).
@Jamsessionroom1337 oh, i think i completely misunderstood your comment. in terms of mixing obscura has it up very loud and comprehensible. partially viraemia too.
I see where you're coming from. Bass fan boys always say that it is the most important instrument when in reality it is just as important as the other instruments. The bass has a purpose just like the drums, and other guitars. The bass is for beefing up the lower end of the rhythm (and sometimes lead) of the song to give it that great heavy sound that we enjoy. (Well at least that 'I' enjoy)
you can also use some bass programming software also + drum software + actual guitar/amp/mic thru interface - into - DAW ...then ...Voila! cheaper than buy a bass too... Awesome demo too,btw!
you can racord the bass exactly the same as the guitar (head-cab-mic-interface), but you cant put the thing through your head and then directly to the interface. ola uses vst's here, to simulate a distorted amp.
@WeAreSLAK Yeah, I use GarageBand too, there's indeed a compresser, but that's the only thing you can do... But I donno, I think when you have a good sound, a basic compresser is already enough. Okay, I don't know on what level you are... ;)
Always thought about doubling the bass part in metal songs, never tried it this way. The gain just mixed a tad in with the clean bass sounds cool. Also being a 6 string player (not 7) I always wondered if I should try it to pound lows better. Now I have enough tracks to do it easy (I like to record outboard) went from 8 to 32. Not sure why but I always cut the vary bottom on bass tracks also, (I don't like the mud) but boost the mids some. But I do like the gain overdub or double track sound you got.
Mel rocking the Gibson Thunderbird bass! And congratulations on successfully dialing in a shitty distorted bass tone! You succeeded beyond your wildest dreams! LOL!
Really good ideas, Im a gtr/mixer tech only thing is I would lower the bass in the mix but over all a real good lesson for intro lvl record dudes! METAL or DEATH!!!
please.could you make a video how you do you the drums(SD) and hot to mix the instruments(snare,kicks, toms.), adding plugins, etc,. thanks .if it is possible, blasting tone ehh,...1000%
Awesome (and hilarious)... but how about mic‘ing up a cabinet and not scooping the mids? Seems like the bass tone kinda gets butchered this way, but maybe that’s ok for metal?
When you say set the attack and “response” is another word for that “release “? It may have been a figure of speech but I don’t see a response” this video has helped me a ton lol :]
@Metallifuch Yeah, yeah, thats what I kinda figured anyway. Just looking for a way to get out of it as I've only got a 4 string with really light gauge strings...
bottom line, the rhythm section of any band, no matter the genre, is the foundation of the overall sound. If you add all the bones on before you have a solid back bone...you're sounds skeleton will crumble.
So you record your guitars and basses in mono tracks and just pan them differently correct? a mono guitar track on each side, and two mono bass tracks dead center, right?
thanx alot man! now I fucking know how to get teh brutal ass bass sound!! you kick sounds fucking kickass too! do a tutorial on that too please :D what are you using for drums btw? superior? or real drums? cheers mate
Man, you have come so far and this is still so useful (and good)
CEO of Solar Guitars, everyone.
@User010101 I'm using Logic internal just to make a point that you can use just about ANY distortion to get this type of sound.
You are right mel, that shit was tight.
Mel Gibson holding a Gibson
Ola, thanks for these clips. They are mega helpful for those of us producing stuff from home on a budget. @Pitacle2009 No. Maybe that was unclear in the video. I just copy the recorded audio file.
So thats how they get that sound. Layered recordings. Thanks Mel.
After about 8 years of trial and error, I think I'm finally starting to grasp the general idea. Cheers, man.
gods, these are the best tuts, so quick and clear, full of power tips. specially the compressor part. very practical. usually people love to obfuscate when it comes to compressors. so uncool. a compressor tut, touching on most mix elements would be sweet. thanks for sharing!
@MOOKYANG1 It's a Clive bass. Deluxe copy.
I just realised Glenn's tutorial is basically this.
Yeah, he basically copied it almost note for note.
the thing i love about these videos is that they are so simple and just have the whole mind set of "just fucking do it.." and it works.. thanks for that bro. its about time someone puts just a simple video up that works.
@jipchen cheers man, glad it worked out!
@AhmedThDeadGuitarist Yes, I'm using this method in all my metal-tracks.
"...set the distortion so it sounds like shit..." That's so awesome! I had to watch this three times in a row!
@Rawdonguitar the song in the intro is the one I play in the Framus Cobra - Metal video.
It's hillarious how your 10 years old video helps me right now, damn
Even thtough I'm watching you since 2017, you smash
@jacosmith86 Yes, hence the description; the Fearedse way...
@zzrock7 with midi. Using Toontrack Superior 2.0 as sampler.
@pesciro the clicktrack is just a click in logic. And yeah superior is like a instrument plugin
Short and clean. The way to go. Great shit bro... Great shit.
@morrishopmans you can't. But check out Reaper. That's free and they work practically the same.
@tango616 Because he is also using a seperate track of the bass just clean, so when you blend the 2 tracks it will sound way different than just listening to the distorted track by itself. You hear the crazy distortion but you still get the distinct tone of what is being played by the clean track.
@semilei both in center!
set the distortion so it sounds like shit
XDXD
+ZerovoreZ Zen i know. it had me rolling.
+DeanGuitarsForLife! Glenn of SMG (a sound engineer) said the same thing, haha.
DarthUno Set the distortion to make it sounds like garbage, or most recent Nickelback record, you choice.
@tango616 spot on!
@redoubt9000 depends, most of the times a good recorded bass guitar will be enough, but sure I use sims sometimes.
Your bass tone has come a long way sir.
@TheMetalhead804 No Logic Pro is extra dough. No you can't do as much in Garageband. BUT you can do a lot in Logic Express with is a cheap version of Logic Pro.
@Rawdonguitar that's another of my songs, check my EVH 5150 video
@User010101 I use superior drummer 2.0 I'm on it making a tutorial how I set that up aswell.
In this video I'm using the Logics built in guitar amp.
@MladenKapisoda thanks dude! /O
@dsl100stack cool man, great to hear that it works for others as well :D
Great tips, MEL. Loved your work in "Braveheart". In fact, I'm going to wear blue war paint while playing my bass from now on.
BEST TUTORIAL EVER!
Ola, you're my fucking hero. Five minutes and my bass tone sounds fucking tight.
Never knew how to get a good bass tone for metal, and now I duly do. Sounds absolutely sick. :)
Thanks Mel. This has been a fantastic lesson.
Ola is the fucking man.

Still watching in 2023! Yeow.
@hideki12345 Thanks man,
I'm currently planning on doing a Superior 2.0 tutorial so where I'll include some free samples. Stay tuned!
@Codyrg thanks man, I love my dog
Thank you Ola, I will try this out🤘🏼
This is a really insightful video. I give this the symbol of my approval.
ya know.. there's just something about Mel laying the shit down straight for you, it makes you LISTEN
Will a bull terrier give me a more barky tone?
Will definitely add bite
@Jamsessionroom1337 oh, i think i completely misunderstood your comment. in terms of mixing obscura has it up very loud and comprehensible. partially viraemia too.
@morrishopmans Logic 9

i just discovered your videos...man, it is awesome, well explaned and funny as hell
GOOOOD STUFFFF!!!
you can also use some bass programming software also + drum software + actual guitar/amp/mic thru interface - into - DAW ...then ...Voila! cheaper than buy a bass too... Awesome demo too,btw!
this is good straight forward advice and the fact you got Mel Gibson on board for the video was tight I didn't even know that dude liked metal.
you can racord the bass exactly the same as the guitar (head-cab-mic-interface), but you cant put the thing through your head and then directly to the interface. ola uses vst's here, to simulate a distorted amp.
There is bass in the first segment but its only one raw di. The second segment has the post processed dual tracks.
I love these how to's, they're actually really useful :)
Awesome job Mel!
I was skeptical at first but like the end result. Good job
@TheMetalhead804 I recommend pc and protools personally.
It is an Apogee One, according to his metal-guitar-recording video. Look it up, it's worth it :)
@WeAreSLAK Yeah, I use GarageBand too, there's indeed a compresser, but that's the only thing you can do... But I donno, I think when you have a good sound, a basic compresser is already enough. Okay, I don't know on what level you are... ;)
Please! can you make a video recording drums with details!??? Thanks man , you're awesome!

2010, short on point tutorials. 10 years later, 30 mins talking head with similar point like this one
please do more of this it is amazing!
please make a video of how you mix i would love that thanks and keep up the good work.from all the metal heads in ireland
for pc any really will do for any platform they all sound the same i would suggest reaper if your on a budget. i use studio one for mastering.
ah man, if only all recordings sounded like this
"This is tight, fucking awesome!"
Lolololoololoolol
Mel rocking the Gibson Thunderbird bass! And congratulations on successfully dialing in a shitty distorted bass tone! You succeeded beyond your wildest dreams! LOL!
You still do the same process on bass these days?
I don't believe so, since it's only available from the apple app store now. You might want to double check though.
i tried this this morning and it sounded awesome. thanks man!!!
Den här skiten är trång, Knullande fantastiskt!
Really good ideas, Im a gtr/mixer tech only thing is I would lower the bass in the mix but over all a real good lesson for intro lvl record dudes! METAL or DEATH!!!
Jorge Crow, this program is Logic Pro 9
please.could you make a video how you do you the drums(SD) and hot to mix the instruments(snare,kicks, toms.), adding plugins, etc,. thanks .if it is possible, blasting tone ehh,...1000%
Awesome (and hilarious)... but how about mic‘ing up a cabinet and not scooping the mids? Seems like the bass tone kinda gets butchered this way, but maybe that’s ok for metal?
@SuperLG420 No amp. Just plug it in to your audio interface.
Thank you so much for this video because I'm planning on buying a bass guitar to make my videos have a better sound.
@z0mgzt0m Logic 9
When you say set the attack and “response” is another word for that “release “? It may have been a figure of speech but I don’t see a response”
this video has helped me a ton lol :]
For those wondering, the DAW/Music Program is Logic Pro 9.
What's that heavy shit that's playing towards the end? Sounds awesome!!
+Craig C Feared - Warbound
No shit dude, I'm going to try this next time I record some bass. Gearbox has this function built in but that gives you no control after recording.
@Metallifuch
Yeah, yeah, thats what I kinda figured anyway. Just looking for a way to get out of it as I've only got a 4 string with really light gauge strings...
Nice video man. Learnt a lot from this. :D
One question though, what did you mean when you said to 'blend' the bass tracks together?
Great metal bass guitar tone!! I tried it and it sounds awesome. Why even buy a damn bass amp?? just plug in and do it in DAW !!!
simple, but great tone and performance in the tracks. fucking awesome!!!!!!!!!!
bottom line, the rhythm section of any band, no matter the genre, is the foundation of the overall sound. If you add all the bones on before you have a solid back bone...you're sounds skeleton will crumble.
You and Robbaz the King of Sweden would make an awesome commentary video
So you record your guitars and basses in mono tracks and just pan them differently correct? a mono guitar track on each side, and two mono bass tracks dead center, right?
Fuckin' awesome!!!!! Yeaaaaaah ;)
what do you generally do? record drums, then bass, then guitar?
What does Sensei mean by blend the two tracks? Also are they panned hard left and right?
thanx alot man! now I fucking know how to get teh brutal ass bass sound!!
you kick sounds fucking kickass too! do a tutorial on that too please :D what are you using for drums btw? superior? or real drums?
cheers mate
@Erithlon buy one!
I do not get a clean crunchy sound on my base when I use my interface. Any tips on that?
Maybe cause you’re using a base and not a bass?
