Never heard of this band but I paused the video halfway through and listened to the album and yeah, I'm in love. Thank you for these types of videos Elliot
Just found this channel today as a massive Beatles and McCartney fan, watched hours of your videos and get treated to a post the very same day!!! Thank you for all your research and insight in all your amazing videos.
"When Winter Comes Around" was probably my most-played song last year. I got slightly obsessed with it - as you say at the end, it's not as simple as "they don't make em like that anymore!" because there have been so many nostalgia-drenched acts who cosplay the style without being able to match the amazing songwriting of the original era. But this is just a damn good song, and a song that would've still sounded great if it was released in the time it emulates.
Exactly! I saw a recent interview where they’re asked how they feel about being considered a retro act. They pointed out that the music is all new. New lyrics, new progressions, new melodies. They obviously have a lot of old-timey influences, but it’s uncool to discard it as some kind of tribute act and ignore that the musical quality is on a level we perhaps haven’t seen since. Recognition aside; the D’Addario brothers are the Lennon-McCartney of today.
Can’t argue with either of you. The Lemon Twigs are an astounding duo. To say they “evoke” any other era or sound is to demean the sophistication they bring to song writing, arranging and playing. They’ve created a kind of dreamscape to which I happily return.
I got into the Lemon Twigs about six months before Everything Harmony came out, so as I do, I bought all the previous albums and immersed myself in their world. Everything Harmony is a 60s and 70s blend of melancholy and bright pop with lovely harmonies.
YES I've been obsessed with this record ever since I saw theneedledrop review it. For some reason all of your videos seem super personalized to my interests lmao
0:16 Woooah that ABBA song is a great example of captivating harmonies. But the example used is an extremely DEEP CUT track called "Dream World" that was rejected from the Voulez Vous album. I'm very impressed to see it being utilized here. It's one of my favorite songs and has great harmonies.
Oh my gosh Elliot, this was a fine introduction (for me) to The Lemon Twigs. Harmonies like Alessi - love it. It's wonderful that fine music is with us still. Thanks for taking the time.
I can’t believe I was lucky enough to come across this. This is an old iPhone SE that doesn’t even have SIM card. I hit the RUclips icon and started scrolling. Most of the recommendations are about Star Wars or DCMarvel comics (movies and collectibles), do-it-yourself vids and anything 80’s as far as music gear (Kawai K4r, Yamaha PTX8) since I don’t know anyone else who has this stuff. But this…. Is pure gold. As one commenter said (he went and bought the rest of their stuff after listening to Everything Harmony)…. I have the exact idea in mind. In essence, your breakdown of this album is what drew me in, and their music sold itself. Mission achieved. You have a new fan of both yourself and the Lemon Twigs. Thanks for lending to a bright spot in my otherwise sub-par day.
Yes! So glad you're covering these guys. I discovered them in 2019 and they've been an absolute favourite ever since. Excellent dissection of their work. Great video!
@@trystero1729 I was so disappointed when I heard the studio version of queen of my school lmao. Did not live up to my expectations from their live versions. I even ordered a japanese import of do hollywood back in 2017 for way too much money bc it had a demo of queen of my school. The demo ended up being almost identical to the go to school version, which is nowhere near as good
Go to school is one of my all time favorite albums. If this video made you give everything harmony a try and you liked it definitely check it out, you won’t regret it!
I love the depth of your analysis here, you really get them. I'm a musician myself, and old enough to be their Dad, but feel like a kid listening to their wonderful music. I saw them on Colbert in 2017 as an introduction and fell in love with Do Hollywood. I actually stopped listening (dumb I know) to them in 2018, and then last Spring I ran across Anytime of Day on RUclips and was smitten again. This time I bought their whole catalog (except for Brothers of Destruction which is hard to find) and when I heard Everything Harmony, I was gob smacked. I also saw three of their shows last year in Chicago, Louisville and San Francisco. I also chatted with Brian and Michael and Reza and Danny after the shows. They are just really humble and approachable guys too. Yes, I'm a superfan :)
I just finished watching this amazing post and reading all the comments. But there is one huge omission. The D'Addario boys produced my favorite album of 2023 - the debut album by Tchochke. Three girls from Long Island who channel all the same vibes + a Bangles, Blondie, and Ronettes vibe. You must check them out. Listen to "How I Wish You Were A Girl" first and then enjoy the rest of the album.
Ah, right - one of the brothers dates the... drummer? The one who was in Pinky Pinky. I keep meaning to check out more Tchochke. Thanks for the comment, it's a reminder.
I watched this on release and had heard of them but never listened to them. Thank you for this video. Everything Harmony is already one of my favourote albums of all time. Can’t stop playing it.
I've been such a huge fan of their music since Go To School came out. Their work just ticks every single box for me. I'm so happy to see they're finally getting the attention they deserve. Just saw the insta story they shared with the link to this video and I was so pleasantly surprised when it directed me to your channel. Thank you for making such an in-depth video about them.
Well done, Elliot. What a lovely review. Heartfelt and comfortable to my ears.. This is a review about a band I've only ever heard of. But now, a band I won't forget. The Lemon Twigs. Is this what the Beatles were repeatedly saying? All that you really need is love.
Great to see some love for the Twigs! "Corner of my eye" is one of the best songs ever written IMO The guys are brilliant and hopefully get a real break soon.
thank you for shining a light. i'm 61 and this album took me back to my TOTALLY 70's childhood. yes, the two B's and simon and garfunkle, but also partidge, csny... basically everything harmony. ;)
Mate, I'm so glad you're a fellow Twigsian. I remember reading a Guardian article in 2016, basically saying 'I Wanna Prove To You' is the perfect new song for classic McCartney fans. And they were right. But it was only Everything Harmony that made by love the band as much as I did in the Do Hollywood era. So glad to see such a long video on this awesome album, and I'm sure the band will see it. Love how you did this as a passion project to get out first, to motivate you to finish off the Ringo Ranked lol.
I'm actually shocked you hadn't heard of The Lemon Twigs before Everything Harmony! I'm so glad we're on the same wavelength though so I get videos like this!!
I just stumbled on this. And my response to it is, akin to a person finding a prophet or messiah. The Lemon Twigs embody everything that was great about 70’s and 60’s music, and it’s like a Bible that they’re preaching from, to me. I instantly love them.
Man, between this and the Love You video, you're hitting all my sweet spots, Elliot! Congrats on discovering the Twigs this past year; I first heard them when they released "The One" back in 2020 and I've been hooked like a fish on the line ever since. Like you sort of addressed, it's not even the retraux stylings specifically (I'd like to think I'm modestly capable of going backwards and forwards, and in any case, I can't help but bristle at that archetypical "ALL NEW MUSIC IS BAD!!1" blanket putdown whenever it rears its head), it's the fact that they're just so damn good at what they've chosen to do. Thanks for sharing! You only briefly touched upon "My Golden Years", but it's already become my favorite song by them, and that's really saying something. The lyrical theme of seizing upon a closing window of opportunity despite past failures is gorgeously and universally articulated; the jangling, propulsive, harmony-laden backing track provides a perfect blend of longing and drive to complement it; it finds the time to slip all sorts of twists and turns into its structure (including, yes, an inevitably Beach Boys-comparable vocal round); Michael's lead effortlessly runs the vocal gamut, culminating in his excellent range-spanning delivery of the final chorus and tag… 2 days into 2024, I already had my anthem for the rest of the year. Cannot recommend it enough; it embodies every one of the compliments you gave them through this video. I adored Everything Harmony (and of course, everything before it), and All We Know's first two singles have me tremendously excited for the rest the LP has to offer. Looking forward to whatever's next! (Just one last aside, I promise: I had the good fortune of talking with the Twigs for a bit after a concert back in 2021, and I remember being struck by how chill and soft-spoken the two of them were. Was really nice to discuss the music, et. al with them, particularly in terms of the then-only-half-recorded material for what became Everything Harmony. Thanks again, you two!)
I've been obsessed with The Twigs shortly after they released Do Hollywood and I'm about the same age as them so I feel like we have been growing together. Their music was the soundtrack of my university years and also helped me in difficult times. I had the fortune to see them live last year in San Diego and it was fantastic, super energetic and talented guys. Now I'm obsessed with They Don't Know How to Fall In Place, literally can't stop listening to that track, and what can I say about My Golden Years... I feel like they wrote that song to me!! Anyways, I'm convinced that their next record is gonna be amazing and I can't wait to listen to it. Saludos desde México, Ellitot 🎸
Came here while fangirling out to the Lemon Twigs. “Everything Harmony” blew me away, compelled me to reach back into their considerable catalog and roll around in their extraordinary work. The sophistication of their arrangements blows me away. It’s refreshing to engage real, right in the feels music that doesn’t sound like it came out of some trend or a mega producer’s head. Glad to hear you heap praise on the Lemon Twigs because they deserve millions more fans and every accolade they receive-and the success to go with them. ❤
been such a twigs fan for years and finally they're getting the love they deserve. it's worth checking out their work with weyes blood on tim heidecker's album too!
i love getting recs for modern music that hits that retro vibe! i was immediately sold when you talked about "analog warmth" - it's something that really matters to me but that i often feel silly talking about. can't wait to listen!!
I saw your video and decided to check them out. I’m really pleased that I did. Great call. These guys can write, sing, play, and produce. They draw off the influences of my generation, opposed to their own. Undoubtedly the influence of their Father and his generation. These guys are excellent songwriters and singers. Thank you for turning me on to them.
I saw Big Star & Friends (Jody Stephens, Mike Mills, Chris Stamey, Jon Auer and the guitarist from Wilco) perform in late 2022. The D’Adario brothers of TLT came out and sang lead on a few songs and completely blew me away; they breathed all this new life into these songs and in an understated way, stole the show. I love their last two albums and have nothing but respect for these guys. Also, great video Elliot, as per usual.
Yeah, they've appeared at a couple of those Wild Honey shows. They just have a presence and energy that really elevates whatever they're doing. Also, you're thinking of Pat Sansone, who aside from playing in Wilco is also in a band called The Autumn Defense with John Stirrat (Wilco bass). I cannot recommend highly enough their album "Circles", which brings 70s soft rock/pop vocals and harmonies in the most beautiful way. If you appreciate what The Lemon Twigs are doing, you'd love them. Check out "Written in the Snow".
I saw this tour as well and agree 100%. Finally the two Big Star albums and more were done the justice they deserved. Brian and Michael are gifted artists. Great review of this album
I’m so glad this video exists! I’ve been into the Twigs since 2017 and have been watching you since your first video, and I always hoped you’d discover them one day. It was so fun to watch someone gush about this band in the same way that I do :)
Outstanding review!!! Thank you so much for sharing this album. I believe it would have been a hit album in the early 70's, despite the quality of bands of that era.
Nice, it makes perfect sense that you would love this record! "Any Time Of Day" is my favourite by a landslide. Just beautiful. Happy to hear you sharing the good word of the Lemon Twigs with your audience!
Just got home from their Seattle show tonight and needed to hear more. Watched a few excellent vids and came across this one. All I wanna say is, HELL YES! Absolutely amazing show, and I'll easily forgive not hearing my favorite (these words) - they jot only ripped thru their own tunes but gave us a note-perfect cover of Good Vibrations - wonderful. So, thanks Elliot for a perfect end to a memorable night.
Have been listening to the Lemon Twigs non-stop since you posted this video. THANK YOU! I kept hearing people obliquely say that good old-fashioned pop rock existed underground, and now I finally found it!
There is a whole treasure trove of great artists who play with The Lemon Twigs as well. If you like their music check out some of the bands they're associated with, it is worth the time and you'll find some hidden gems. Foxygen (and their solo albums), Weyes Blood, Rubber Band Gun, Diane Coffee, Star Moles, etc. All fantastic with a ton of great albums.
I first heard these guys in 2023. I was very impressed with their harmonies. Elliot filled in all the other information. I thought they were very beatlesque, now I see/hear the BeachBoys and Simon and Garfunkel. Their quirkiness is what I liked first. But their music is so good.
Thank you for introducing me to these guys. I am glad you mentioned their stage presence, it is something I appreciate more these days with fewer great front men. I look forward to seeing them when they come around. I think Luke Spiller from The Struts is a great frontman that works his butt off every show.
I stumbled upon these guys at Outside Lands in San Francisco around 7(?) years ago? I heard them but couldn't see them for the dust and trees. :) I followed my ears and was impressed with not only the incredible music and vocals but the high energy, super fun glammy performance as well. They are special!
Just to check back, I'd never heard of them before I saw your video and I've since seem them twice! Both electrifying, joyful performances and I'll see them as many times as I can going forward. So thank you, Elliot! Mission accomplished! You've done us all a real mitzvah!
Wow! Perfect breakdown of this album/artist, (and also how you addressed their critics). You’re spot on… there have been many artists that have tried to capture the essence and brilliance of those great acts from the 60’s/70’s, but so many fall short because they don’t have the wisdom, ability and creativity to give substance to the style. The Twigs have substance coming out their wazoo!! And it’s obvious they care about their craft… this is some high-integrity music. I’ve been a fan since their 1st album, and I finally have a chance to see them in a few weeks. I’m telling everyone about it! Thanks for the excellent effort you put in this video. These guys deserve all the success they want. 🤘
Never heard of this band but I paused the video halfway through and listened to the album and yeah, I'm in love. Thank you for these types of videos Elliot
Definitely go back and listen to their previous records, as well. They're incredible.
I have all their past records. Amazing songwriters. Buy all of them without thought if you can appreciate this sort of stuff.
Great band. Reminds me of Jellyfish.
Exactly what I did!
Yep! I did the same thing! ✋🏻
We love the Lemon Twigs here! Thanks for covering them so well!!
What ABLY HOUSE!!! LOVE your instrumentals

They’ve got Jody playing on one of the songs on Go to School!

You are extremely good at articulating what works about a song. Looking forward to more uploads from you!

"When Winter Comes Around", just a pure John Denver vocal display and feel . Amazing
Thank you for sharing this. I will be checking Everything Harmony out.
My Favourite band, have been since they're first album, the songs are just brilliant!
Okay, I'm convinced! Can't wait to get this album.
I’m old and also old-school and I really appreciate this, thanks!
Thanks for this video, I’m not a big fan of modern pop rock bands. But this made me check them out on Spotify and I was impressed.

Thankd for the new obsession Elliot! I cant get enough of these twigs!
Nice, it makes perfect sense that you would love this record! "Any Time Of Day" is my favourite by a landslide. Just beautiful. Happy to hear you sharing the good word of the Lemon Twigs with your audience!
Great review! Well Done!
@@wt1573 thanks for the recommendations!
GODDAMN. This is really, REALLY special!! GREAT find!!
Really glad you’ve made this video. This band is the true heir to the Beatles and the Beach Boys.
Thanks Elliot - brilliant review. My favourite album of 2023 also and in my top 10 of all time.
The D'addario brothers got so much soul it's coming out their...Rickenbackers.
Bought the record before the end of your video, this is awesome, thanks for the superb review man!
This was my number one last year as well. Great album. Looking forward to the next one.
And they shot film for every track too!
Thank you, Eliot, for introducing me to the band of the 20s.
I cannot get enough Lemon Twigs!
Awesome surprise seeing a Lemon Twigs video from you, I totally agree with this whole take!
I stumbled upon these guys at Outside Lands in San Francisco around 7(?) years ago? I heard them but couldn't see them for the dust and trees. :) I followed my ears and was impressed with not only the incredible music and vocals but the high energy, super fun glammy performance as well. They are special!
This was fantastic! Really well edited and arranged. Of course, you had the most amazing subject in today's music.
I had never heard of this band and WOW you really sell this album! About to save and give it a listen :)
I liked this album, but I already know I'm going to love the 2024 album "A Dream Is All We Know". "My Golden Years" is absolute perfection.
Just to check back, I'd never heard of them before I saw your video and I've since seem them twice! Both electrifying, joyful performances and I'll see them as many times as I can going forward.
So thank you, Elliot! Mission accomplished! You've done us all a real mitzvah!
Sounds awesome, gonna check it out
What a breath of fresh air!!! Thanks Elliot for making and sharing this video on The Lemon Twigs 👍👌
This is the best day ever!!! God I love the twigs
lovely video Elliot :)
love the lemon twigs! i’ve seen them live twice and they are just as spectacular live as on the record! met them as well, super sweet guys :)
Fantastic video and great, needed analysis on an underrated band. You're quickly becoming one of my favorite video creators!
Love The Lemon Twigs and this album! Great video Elliot!
THANK YOU !! phenomenal artistry, masterful review, thus makes my heart smile again! (fyi I was that generation...)
Fell into The Lemon Twigs rabbit hole since seeing them on a Fallon the other week. Fantastic group!
Thank you so much for sharing this recording. I rarely enjoy multiple songs in a single recording and this is one I will revisit like an old friend.
Great review. Thanks for letting us know about them.
