Some of the display lights from the GM Delco stereo of my 2006 Chevy Silverado were burned out, and I found this video very helpful! The bulbs from the power and tuner knobs WERE tricky to get out. But the rest of the bulbs were not a problem. Thanks so much for posting this! It was MUCH cheaper to do it myself!
Thank you for this very informative video! I have several bulbs burned out on my Colorado radio. I'm thankful that I have soldering and de-soldering equipment and the experience to do the job.
Very helpful and well done. I’m not sure I like the idea of spending the better part of a day replacing bulbs. This will be a PITA but I can handle it after watching this Thank you👍
Thanks for the video. It saved me a ton of cash and was easy to do. Can you edit the video to show exactly where to apply voltage. I figured out but that was the only part that wasn't clear. Basically you apply 12 volts using a battery to either side of any bulb leads once they are installed. It's easier if you leave 2 leads uncut for the test then trim once all the bulbs check out.
great tutorial!! also - would you mind telling me which feeds went to which plug connect from the computer power supply to the radio for powering it up outside of the vehicle?
great job, explination & repair. i have the same OEM stereo on a 07 GMC envoy. several lights are out & also on the temperature controls. do both use the same lights? theres no id markings to buy replacements.
Question: So I replaced some of the buttons on my GM radio. Obviously I had to take apart faceplate and I thought I put it back together as you did above. Prior to changing the buttons I had several lights already not working. Now all the lights dont work after reinstalling in SUV. The LCD still works and radio functions. Do you have any idea what may have happened or what I can do? Great video.
Outstanding video except for the assumption parts. The Polarity thing seems as important as everything else you demostrated. Your answer to a previous response made sense to some but not all. Also how you were able to test before reinstalling would be a great demo, sense you have done electronic repair you are set. Again great descriptions and explanations. My eyes are awful and I cannot see the flat side of bad or replacement LED. Still great Job!
***** I have seen a ton of these videos showing how to replace bulbs in a "GM Delco Radio" but how about replacing a bulb in an old shaft style radio like a Pioneer or a Realistic AM/FM cassette car stereo?
+Johnny Jay Polarity is not important on incandescent bulbs. The only time polarity matters is when you're swapping out the stock incandescent bulbs to LED's because LED's are diodes and are polarized components.
Leave the wires on the new bulbs long after you solder them in. Then after they are all soldered in take a 12 volt battery charger and connect it to the 2 wires of any new bulb. If it is done properly all the other bulbs should light up. Then trim the wires off as close to the circuit board as you can.
@@jenniesgarage Hi, i like your video, but i have some question how do you know which voltage and amperage are burn-out bulbs? When i measure voltage on the circuit board it is one reading, when i put one new bulb, voltage reading is different, with second new bulb, again different value. How to determine which amperage are burned bulbs? Could 12V 25mA bulb exchange a 6V 50mA bulb, are they equal? Some bulbs are in serial connection, if one burns out, second will not work too. I tried to measure some voltage and amperage, to calculate current, resistance, but it is too confusing to me.

what newer chevy/gmc stereos will fit a 07 gmc envoy? i can go to my local junk/salvage yard to get a newer oem stereo. i bought an aftermarket sony stereo. it interfered with the onstar, doors ajar/key in ignition/headlights on/airbag & seat occupant sensors reminder & chimes.
im going to do this and try to use red 3mm LED bulbs, is there a way i can test them to make sure i dont have them in backwards while installing them? also would i need to add a resistor or anything to this with leds?
I have a question i hope you see this soon So i took my radio apart and replaced the bulbs but for some reason they are very dim i left 3 of the olds ones that were not burnt out yet just so I can see any differences and the rest of them light up really dim do you have any idea why? Thanks in advance
Problem with LED's instead is that you wouldn't get as much dimming control since LED's don't take much power to light. May be able to add a draining resistor to make up the voltage difference though - mod time...
I want to replace the lights on my stereo from my 04 yukon with blue l.e.d's. I already have 3mm and 4mm blue 12v l.e.d's with internal resistors. Is there anyway of knowing which side is positive and negative on the circuit board?
I would just carefully pull the faceplate and power up the radio. Then use a voltmeter on the bulb terminals. Mark the terminals, or draw a diagram to keep track. That sounds like an interesting project, It will look very nice when it's done.
***** thanks for the tip .. what i did was instead of a volt meter used an led .. i did my gage cluster and steeringwheel buttons ,ran out of leds before i got to the ac and stereo buttons lol ... i have some pics on my IG (cheddar369) incase you wanna check it out
Many people have asked where you connected voltage onto to first test the lights. I didn't see where you answered. I really liked the video except for that obvious omission as well as where you can get the bulbs. I have a bank of these not working. I took the radio out to look at what I'm facing. When I reinstalled it NONE of the button lights work anymore. I suspect a loose cable.....but it'd be nice to check it out on a bench with a 12v source. You probably ought to caution that there is still power to the circuit bd even with the car turned off and the keys out (the clock is always lit).

I don't suppose you happen to know of a source for replacing the 5-pin connector near the volume knob that connects the face plate to the radio body, do you? I accidentally melted the plug that connects to the radio body - enough to wreck it :-( so I will need to replace that. I already had to reattach one of the wires as it had pulled out when I was disconnecting it - despite being as careful as I possibly could with disconnecting it... Great job with the video, BTW... Thanks!
Funny how he did the entire video on the head unit that has a cassette, cd and radio but when it came time to plug the wire on the bottom back onto the circuit board it suddenly turned into a head unit that doesn't have a cassette. No problem though, because if you unit has the cassette, when it comes time to reattach the two plugs, the cassette can be removed by taking out 4 small screws. It makes it much easier to reconnect the two plugs.
I just replaced the face plate on my 2004 Buick Century RDS radio. I wanted to replace the radio because the buttons on mine were badly worn but everything worked otherwise so I got a used unit on eBay for $26 from a Century with 9K miles that was like new. I called the GM dealers in my area and they wanted $125 and up to program it, mind you I was installing it myself, I just wanted them to unlock the Theftlock! No way was I going to pay them that kind of money to hook it up to the OBD II for 5 minutes. Unfortunately I saw a video on here that you could unlock these radios by removing a chip on the circuit board so I reluctantly did it. Well the radio worked but it would not recall the station I left it tuned to after I shut the car off or volume and other audio settings. At this point I decided to attempt to swap the face plates. It was a bit daunting but I figured I had nothing to loose so I tried it. It was actually fairly easy except getting that small harness on the right to plug back in. I did not remove the top cover so that may have helped? I finally got it after about 15 mins and a lot of persevering and patience but now my radio looks great and works as it did before without spending any extra money so I'm happy!
I change my lights and it worked But after i turn of the car the radio lights when on by itself consuming the battery of my truck I remove the radio recheck welding spots did a Light check all the radio light works then reinstall the radio and now the radio doesn't drain the battery anymore because none of the radio light works at all ,i pull the radio again and check the lights with external power and they are ok they light any idea what can be happening..?? thank you

Tx for the video. I found a piece of rubber tubing in my tool box; used it to hold the bulbs down inside the knob holes.
Super instructional and detailed. Thank you

Very well done sir, nice video. Wish I knew where you put your 12v line & ground to test the bulbs
I went ahead and soldered in the new bulbs, and it works great!
where do you get all these radio's I see you working on , cool video also.
