1st Official Flight of Special Kay the only flying A-26A Counter Invader

  • Although Special Kay actually flew on Saturday the 8th of July, the first public "official" flight was on the anniversary of the first A-26 flight many moons ago, today on the 10th of July. This flight had 5 cameras although one failed due to SpaceMan Spiff ejecting the warp core for camera 5 into the abyss. The camera wasn't working properly anyway so we give him a pass, but somewhere in DFW is a really small warp core with 16gb worth of flight data on it....

Had a chance to see this unique and outstanding A-26K restoration completed and flying at this years EAA AIRVENTURE 2018, in it's new camouflage paint scheme. It was also featured on the front cover page of Nov 2018 issue of EAA's SPORT AVIATION flying together with a AD-6 1 SKYRAIDER in a similar paint scheme. What a masterpiece and treasure.

Good to see it in the air again. Worked on A-26's for two years back in the 60's as a crew chief at NKP with the 609th ACS/SOS. A lot of fond memories of these aircraft and those men I worked with and the pilots that flew them.

FANTASTIC - it's wonderful to see a warbird restored to flying condition and this one is a beauty. A big additional thank you for not overlaying this with a musak soundtrack - it was almost like we were there with her.

There was a company that flew 3 of these as water bombers out of Thunderbay Ontario Canada. They were orange and white in colour. Cool Planes. That was the early 80's.

So cool to see an A-26 flying! We flew one all over in the 60's. It was an Onmark Conversion.

Many years ago I worked at an airport and there were a few flights a week of P3 Orion (civilian version) planes taking frozen meat to the Middle East. We had many jet take-offs every day, but the prop planes always grabbed me: there was a real sense of the _effort_ they made to take off, loaded to the max. You could FEEL the sounds. Jets just roar and climb. Like steam trains vs diesels.

I've seen a couple of A-20's Havocs flying and an A-26 static display but never one flying before. A rare beauty of WW-2 and the Korean war days. All she needs now is to check off the last of the FAA paperwork and a nice paint job. Congratulations and a job well done crew! That takes alot of patience, hardwork, dedication and money. An historical flying museum. SWEET....

My Dad flew A-26s in the Pacific theater in WWII. Name of his aircraft was "Boomerang Bev" after his wife (my Mom). He never had a picture of the actual aircraft. He did mention that many of them were dumped in the ocean on the voyage back to the states.

I don't know who's idea it was to put the camera on the starboard wing tip!
    But he's a genius!!💡
That was the coolest video I've ever seen of an aircraft flying from that perspective.. loved it!! Got to see the nose gear drop and great video of entire plane flying against the back ground.. She looks and sounds sweet!! Great job keeping American memories fueled up, fired up, with the gear up.

Dang!! An A-26 with a solid nose and 8 .50's! This really puts it into perspective of the meanness of the skies, and ground strikes, portrayed by this piece of flying artwork (and I don't say that lightly.) The only thing I'd say that would really give it pure "ground-strike wickedness" is gun pods on the wings. Otherwise, a truly wonderful legend of the skies seldom spoken of. My congrats to the team!!

I just watched a lead off video of another A-26 taking off. So this is one of two flyable A-26's But this one is hands down a warbird. The other had odd windows in it's fuselage. Too bad it is such a plain jane but, beautiful just the same.

The USAF redesignated this plane the BEE twenty-six, conveniently forgetting that there had ALREADY been a B-26, the Martin Marauder, of which "Flak Bait" is the most well-known example.

    • @hawkeyepoole
      @hawkeyepoole  4 года назад

True, and even more confusing if it went to Thailand, they weren't accepting bombers so it became the A-26A Counter Invader. Actually I think they were all renamed A-26A. If you see a plane in a museum and it has TA on the tail it went overseas. If it says IF on the tail it staid stateside. Ours is IF17679

Cosmetics are not a priority during restoration. That's the last thing you worry about. First you get it flight worthy and THEN you bother with cosmetics. She's in full color now.

That laminar flow wing has to accelerate to flying speed before its ready to fly...!!! Its not like the B25 that can be horsed off and stalled into the sky at a dangerous angle of attack and the accelerate out of it... remember the STOL launches from the carriers...the A26 cant do that...!!! New procedures ... if you dont follow them you will die...!!!
