love it...I can play my videos from my galaxy note 3....watch my pictures and go through my files on my tv...and much more.. I don't know why people are complaints about this hot device....watch youtube and talk in the phone at the same time...cant go wrong...
FYI It actually doesn't stream off your phone if you are watchign netflix or youtube..(big difference from airplay)..your device (phone, computer, etc) acts as a remote..Chromecast itself look for the content that you choose and grabs it from the followign site: netflix or youtube....Hence once you started playing a movie from netflix you can even turn your phone off and this will not affect the streaming...
Recently, youtube self deleted on my 2010 made Samsung 3D TV that I had made smart with a Samsung dongle. The Samsung support person said that Google no longer supported the old TV re youtube streaming. The only way forward was a Chromecast. Worked like a charm. When you try and install it on Windows 8.1, the streaming extension would not easily install. Solution is available on web by previous techies who experienced this difficulty. Chromecast streams youtube well from i pads as well.
We have a sanyo tv and everything played on the chromecast had perfect video, and sound quality. much better than sitting at the computer all day with a sore back. i love the way i can snack and relax watching tv now.
Unfortunately, plugging it into the USB port on my TV causes noticeable static in the background. So I use the AC adapter with it. That seems to be working pretty well.
Just an update, I got a Bluray player as a gift for my desktop computer. I use Slysofts' anydvdHD to unlock the bluray encoding, then I play the bluray with VLC Media player. Using the Chromecast in Google Chrome, I cast my entire desktop and make the movie fullscreen, then BAM, bluray on my tv. Obviously the better solution would be to get a bluray player or fix my PS3, but don't have the money right now. Love my Chromecast
I watched the Chromecast Tricks, Hak5 1514.2 on RUclips before I watched yours and there are a few good pros there that sound pretty good as well. Shouldn't you always check the way something plugs together before you force it? But still a great Video Thanks
rjsmith59 thanks for replying.. reviews i've read state "Not all streams take advantage of the Chromecast's full capabilities".. also, many people say the extension constantly crashes.
Jason Williams I have had the Chromecast for several months now and the crashing issue started when chrome was updated to v33.xx It worked great before that and if you run Chrome v32, it still does lol. Google is supposed to be fixing it since 3/10. Also Wondershare Media Center is working on new software that streams directly from pc. It only works for win 7 and was just realeased in Beta this month. go figure lol
rjsmith59 I've also been hearing that streaming a tab works but streaming the whole screen crashes. Do you experience crashes when streaming just a tab?
***** it is the googlcast extension that just keeps crashing every 10-15 minutes. Does not matter if I am even using it at the time. I am sure it is crashing on both casting a tab and casting desktop. Again, the google team has said this is a widespread issue and are supposed to be working hard on a solution per a post couple days ago.
Hmmh should I take this or the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter? The display adapter from Microsoft seems much more practical, it also uses miracast technology.. But it's almost twice as expensive.. Hmmh
I have a really terrible connection with my PC and since you have to set-up through WIFI I thought that's what I would have to stick with. Throughout the setup it took longer than it should have since it kept dropping down every couple of seconds.. but then I found that the Chromecast connected up to the network, so then I was able to use my wired connection as normal. So that was great.
so we can save money on buying a smart tv by buying a chromecast? i.e i buy a regular uhd tv by giving preferences to sound, picture quality etc and install chromecast so that i can save money on the difference between the smart and regular tv price?
Roku was $39.95 as a Father's Day special--unbeatable. ChromeCast is something I'll never use again. The USB port or alternative AC power are an extra nuisance. Then you've got to download Chrome browser to your Apple Air (I"m happy with Safari, thank you). And then you've got to use your computer as a remote control!
Very good demo. I give you a A+. Hey quick. I can't get my Chromecast to recognised my internet password ? Internet provider said every thing is fine on there side and am using the wright password.
The Chrome Cast is more convenient for streaming videos than the HDMI cable for my Kindle Fire. The HDMI is a struggle because of the cord, but the Chrome Cast is portable. Thanks for letting me know.
How Can I cast my LAPTOP Screen to my Regular TV through Google Chromecast & which laptop brands are compatible with it?????? Please share your knowledge on this. Please do reply soon. Should I buy a SMART TV or should I buy this ChromeCast ????? I'm from INDIA. Many thanks.
I commented on another video about the roku review and I'm just gonna copy and paste my comment: The exact same complaints that you have for the roku are the same that I have for the Google chromecast. When I first got it I loved it. It took me awhile to get used to using my phone and/or iPod as a remote but I still loved it compared to the expensive apple TV that I used to have. That was until about this week. When I first got it I had little to no problems with the video quality and lagging. Here and there the video would get blurry but it would fix itself and I wouldn't have any problems at all. Now I get so frustrated with it because it seems like every video I play; the quality gets shitty and the lagging goes on every minute. RUclips is the main app that doesn't work on chromecast. It'll even crash on my phone or iPod! It got to the point where I'd rather watch videos on my phone rather than the big screen. I know it's not my wifi connection otherwise I wouldn't be able to use my iPod or see the chromecast back drop at all. I've tried unplugging it, rebooting it, and resetting it (btw the reset button on the chromecast does not work and it's been like that the day I bought it at target) but nothing is working. I want to take it back and get the roku since I heard so many great reviews but now I'm not sure.
FANTASTIC DEVICE!!...if your wi fi is configured correctly ,it works great.,the price is dead on..you could stream a lot more content if you download the avia app,...just bought a second chromecast and attached it to my bedroom tv using an access point..about to buy another for my kids room..much cheaper than a roku...well worth it.
Hoping in the future, it'll be easier to stream from one device to an other. At this time, it's very hard to navigate around, and almost impossible to viewing anything on TV.
You can, via the mirror cast extensions. But the review fails to note that they're third party extensions and they don't work well. Forget "casting" HD video, I couldn't get 256p home videos to play on my tv with chromecast because of lag. IMHO, Chromecast is a waste when wifi "smart" blu ray players are available for $15 more.
Epsato Dude you need to stop, I don't know how you failed but I was watching a 1920x1200@30fps video on my 1080p TV, running off my computer flawlessly. The chromecast was even smart enough to adjust the aspect ratio of the video, so it matched the TV without strecthing! And my desktop setup is prime for failure too, I have 2 computers connected to a switch, which is plugged into a Netgear wireless AP, which is wirelessly connected to my router 2 floors down. Everything from Netflix/RUclips streaming off my phone to playing random video and music files off my computer, was completely faultless. All I did was grab the first chrome extension on the google play store, and install it. Then I cast my desktop to Chromecast and was listening to music videos off my computer, while playing online.
I work at Target and I get this question alot, but can you watch personal videos that you have on your phone with Chromecast? Or is just online videos (RUclips, Netflix, WatchESPN)?
I currently can not watch NFL (Redskins) games In PA. on my TV These are the games that are televised by FOX. Will I be able to stream them with Chromecast.
My opinion in a nut shell is I love because it does what want it to do. Anything you can see on your laptop you can see on your big screen smart TV. That's all I want so HULU, RUclips or my favorite Netflix. Little geeky to set up lots of videos on line, like this one, can help you thru it. You don't get a remote. Your laptop is your remote. REMEMBER YOU HAVE TO USE GOOGLE CHROME BROWSER TO SETUP AND VIEW. 24 dollars at Costco. How could this not be a great deal.
My tv has hdmi and a usb port BUT the usb doesn't give the chromecast enough power to run it so I still use the wall adapter. It's no big deal and it works great especially for the measly $35!
This is, by far, the #1 problem with the Chromecast imo. They make it look like all you gotta do is plug in this little usb stick looking thing and that's IT. Which would be really awesome...but no you gotta have another wire going to usb power and if that doesn't work...you better hope the tv is near a power port you can reach. It kind of makes it not worth it for what I want to do with it...which is to bring the device over to someone elses house so I can stream my content there. If their tv has a hard to access power port that could get messy.
Aro2220 you could use a rechargeable usb battery backup,it is 350ma. it works fine on xp and so does this netbook that is supposed to run 7. The wifi may be laggy depending on your router which I solved by plugging ethernet into the pc, or trying a different router. It plays better on the tv then the netbook you need the chrome extension and wireless. watching it on both screens is not so good, but then again either is this netbook.
Best demo i saw is urs .... the other videos tow videos i saw , had two people talking at the same time, couldn't understand a shit from them , thx for ur video
To many reports calling this the Apple TV killer. But here's my con. I can't stream or airplay a video from an app to the chromecast..i have a separate movie/video player app and with Apple TV I get the icon for airplay or whatever but with chromecast I don't. This does let me do RUclips and Netflix but I have that stuff on my ps3.
youtube booooooo because then you have to have an ugly hdmi cable going to a laptop or desktop or something and you have to walk up to it to control anything. why even bother? why not just use a desktop with multiple displays and just skip the whole stupid tv thing if that is how you are using it? you also don't realize how useful it is to be able to walk into someone's house, plug in an hdmi dongle to their tv and suddenly be able to stream all kinds of content to their tv. have you seen google play music? for $8/mo you can play nearly any song in the world at any time on any device. for free you can upload all your music from your desktop/itunes/whatever and access it anywhere. and don't forget...this is chromecast v1. It's basically a device to hijack any large display and turn it into a giant screen for your personal content...for $35.
Aro2220 I have a wireless keyboard and Microsoft lap mouse, its more convenient laying in bed with that than having a laptop on my lap. And my laptop folds up perfectly and sits hidden under my tv when im using it, you cant even see the cord.
illegal does not mean immoral, and vice-versa. that said, the answer I suspect would be yes, provided it is in the correct format... some movies, never made it to dvd, but can only be obtained in vhs format. for example, the theatrical release of HIGHLANDER (Christopher Lambert) is ONLY available in VHS format.... so, would it not be moral, in the interest of preserving great art, to download that in digital format?... maybe... although digital format is unstable compared to some kinds of analog storage... vinyl lps, are very stable, compared to MP3, or AIFF files, which are subject to electromagnetic evaporation... also, consider how technology destroys business models... the word processor basically ended the typewriter... wish they were still around... you could type stuff without "the government" (cesar) spying on you... of course, the government, the angelic one, is the one you owe your allegiance to... "the wages of sin is death"... Rock Stars... Mick Jagger has noted that the "easy money" has been made, and now there are many many artists, attempting to find a mass audience to create the economies of scale necessary to "make the mega-bucks"... Mick Jagger is a graduate student of the London School of Economics... really "smart" guy... wise too, it seems... So, will artists have to now rely on concert ticket sales to "make a living"? Is it as it was in the middle ages, when "travelling ministrels" attempted to fund their "gypsy lifestyle choice"? Or can copyright laws still be enforced? In my opinion, artists should consider asking for donations, or "tribute money" - some, I suspect might make more in terms of donations than they are now, in terms of royalties... which are subject to "accounting irregularities"... eventually, the answer to your question will be no, I suspect, as the industry develops a system where all media files are tagged, like fish in the ocean, and "accounted for"... But for now, one MP3 file looks like any other MP3 file, to "the Internet Cloud Computer" (or, SkyNet)...
.. what if "they" desired to destroy the profits associated with "media content"?.. You might ask, Why would they want to do that?... Well, I suspect communists hate the idea of popular authors making "mucho deneiro" and would rather see an economic system where books of equal weight, are sold for the same price.. "This book has a 100 pages, and so does this one, wherefore, they should be sold at the same price" -- would be their logic, I suspect... That said, most people I think would desire a physical copy of a piece of music, or a movie, and so, will pay, for that dvd copy, or CD copy, rather than leave things in "software format", subject to "deletion", or "code corruption"... in the Cloud, or on flashdrive... simply not as satisfying as having a physical, authentic, copy - one you can be certain has not been tampered with... unless, of course, it is an illegal copy - a forgery... sad, but such industry exists..
The Wall Street Journal - if a business story does not appear in that newspaper, but on the internet only, would you still trust that news story as being authentic? Or would you think, "It does not matter whether this be true or not, only whether many will choose to accept it as being true"? ... In other words, do other persons' perceptions influence your own?.. The need for "authority figures" is real, creates order out of chaos - but are such "authorities" trustworthy? Look at how badly the Credit Rating Agencies called the last financial crisis... That said, I wonder why Warner Brothers Inc. and other such media content companies do not sell content directly to the consumer, but choose to go through Amazon dot com rather? You would think they might do both. But I think it is because such media content companies, though they own that media (songs, or movies) do not own the manufacturing of the dvds or cds... and so, their ability to say to the consumer, "buy from us, and you will be getting authentic merchandise" is limited... and forgers can set up shop and put the Warner Bros. logo, or brand, on their dvds and cds... It is a very real problem, I think... Look at fake Gucci purses, out of Hong Kong... I think it was Sun Tzu who said, Business is war... Or was it, Gordon Gekko (see movie, Wall Street)?
I heard you repeat one idea about three times in a row, and it was just too wordy, the way to gain and hold an audience is to be clear and instructive while also being as brief as possible.
great vid bro! I find that it is awesome to bring to parties if your host has a sound system hooked up to there tv and use the chrome cast to be a "you tube DJ" .... just walk around and ask people what song they want to hear and play it from your smart phone on the chrome cast..... awesome stuff..
Can someone help me , I use this chromecast and after one hour and a half of casting videos make noises , I have to unplug and plug again to solve it, should buy a new one?
since google chrome itself is considered an app could i go on it? so basically i could use the internet from my phone and stream it to the tv? if so the possibilities are endless.
yes it runs without a phone but there is a big but. You need to control it with something like a small laptop or tablet or phone. your grandmother has to understand how to use a laptop or some device.
Is this device Strictly internet/chrome based? Will it work with phones/tablets without wifi? Can I stream media files (videos, music, etc) I have on my Tablet with or without a wifi connection? For instance if I wanted to use it to run a presentation video I have on my tablet but would not be connecting to the local wifi, will it still stream?
This device connects to the internet. From what i can tell, the device you use to control it does not stream its content to it. The chromecast streams the video or music from the internet.
Why are people doing these video this device is not new its been around for about 14months now if people dont understand what it is and what it does try doing some research of ur own but saying that i am an early adoptor and love new and especialy easy tech i bought, one of these for my parents and they love it once i showed them how to use it that is
Because everyone doesn't have it already and you are too stupid to realize its not only about you and know one cares when you got and if you got it last year why are you watching ok I'm done I had a lot more to say but I'm not going to waste my time get your head out your ass
love it...I can play my videos from my galaxy note 3....watch my pictures and go through my files on my tv...and much more.. I don't know why people are complaints about this hot device....watch youtube and talk in the phone at the same time...cant go wrong...
I just bought and installed Chromecast on my TV. It is working great!
I agree! This device is well worth it. I just watched your video through it on my TV.
I have one of these, but without the charger cable. Can I just use any USB charger cable?
Recently, youtube self deleted on my 2010 made Samsung 3D TV that I had made smart with a Samsung dongle. The Samsung support person said that Google no longer supported the old TV re youtube streaming. The only way forward was a Chromecast. Worked like a charm. When you try and install it on Windows 8.1, the streaming extension would not easily install. Solution is available on web by previous techies who experienced this difficulty. Chromecast streams youtube well from i pads as well.
Very informative. Thank you for helping make the decision
We have a sanyo tv and everything played on the chromecast had perfect video, and sound quality. much better than sitting at the computer all day with a sore back. i love the way i can snack and relax watching tv now.
its £30 in the UK but it supports every streaming app with a few small changes .
Unfortunately, plugging it into the USB port on my TV causes noticeable static in the background. So I use the AC adapter with it. That seems to be working pretty well.
thank you so much you made my decision so much better. You rock buddy
you explained it so clear of the pros and cons and what we need to be able to use it. Great. Thanks. I will get one.

But still a great Video Thanks
will this use any of your data time or anything on your phone if you are watching youtube or anything
Anthony Bruno No, it plugs into the hdmi port, (how else will it display video) and usb for power.
only certain websites can be streamed to your TV? for this it's a fail for me.
actually, with googlecast, anything you open in a chrome browser can be streamed or even your desktop by toggle a setting in googlecast
rjsmith59 thanks for replying..

Hello does it have to be plugged into the TV or can I plug it into my home theater receiver and it still work??
That extension for chrome allows you to cast anything in the browser. Only way to cast xfinity.
Very good demo. I give you a A+. Hey quick. I can't get my Chromecast to recognised my internet password ? Internet provider said every thing is fine on there side and am using the wright password.

Probably the best review I've seen in a ling time! Thanks! Getting one today!
can it work with your phone's hot spot or or only WiFi?

please varify that with ipad it can only cast with apps. i had it setup and try to cast from ondemand site, but no icon on the browser.
I have two of them one works well the other is flaky as hell. The one on my wife's TV operates very poorly. Wouldn't you know it.
can you mirror using your smartphone? Basically it makes your TV into a smart TV right?
+kalaa bandarr thanks
What does a HDMI port necessary on the TV? This unit gets plugged into the USB port.
Thank ypu for your review it helped so much...I am ordering mine now....I also have a Samsung Note. Again thanks

i have old movie's down loaded to my computer, can I stream them with chromecast
Thanks so much! That helped answer a lot of questions for me. I don't know anything about electronics.
I use Kindle, can you turn the screen off on your phone and still use the kindle app if you are mirroring the screen?
I have a Nexus 5
Thanks
Can i use this to watch home videos that are on my laptop? i dont want to upload all of them to youtube since that would take forever.
Vorsent use videostream extension in chrome to watch local videos

If u download movies to your phone will this chromecast plug in enable it to play on the tv?
If you have only one hdmi slot, it helps to get a hdmi multiple switch on ebay.

You can use a phone or tablet
Just curious.I pay my movies thru VLC player. Can the be streamed to the chromecast?
I just got it but I can't say that it's worth owning. I initially had thought it would do a lot more. Luckily, it's not too expensive.
What's OW H2?
not being racist cause i am light skin but black people do the best reviews :)
LOL
You sound dumb, light skin isn't a race.

apple tv is dumb, chromecast is dumb, Netflix is dumb, I tunes is dumb. Why use all that bs when all you need is utorrent and an hdmi cable.
youtube booooooo Im with you
Get On amazon it's cheaper amzn.to/1katw0N
youtube booooooo because then you have to have an ugly hdmi cable going to a laptop or desktop or something and you have to walk up to it to control anything.
why even bother? why not just use a desktop with multiple displays and just skip the whole stupid tv thing if that is how you are using it?
you also don't realize how useful it is to be able to walk into someone's house, plug in an hdmi dongle to their tv and suddenly be able to stream all kinds of content to their tv. have you seen google play music? for $8/mo you can play nearly any song in the world at any time on any device. for free you can upload all your music from your desktop/itunes/whatever and access it anywhere.
and don't forget...this is chromecast v1.
I have a friend who is heavy in illegal down loads via smart phone from pirate bay ,bit lord , etc. will cromecast allow those movies to be viewed?
U mean u are ?
Noor Singh Virk Ha ha!!!
"i have a friend"=himself.i'd say a lot of people have a "friend" like that.
illegal does not mean immoral, and vice-versa.
that said, the answer I suspect would be yes, provided
it is in the correct format... some movies, never made it to
dvd, but can only be obtained in vhs format. for example, the
theatrical release of HIGHLANDER (Christopher Lambert) is ONLY
available in VHS format.... so, would it not be moral, in the interest of
preserving great art, to download that in digital format?... maybe... although
digital format is unstable compared to some kinds of analog storage... vinyl
lps, are very stable, compared to MP3, or AIFF files, which are subject to
electromagnetic evaporation... also, consider how technology destroys
business models... the word processor basically ended the typewriter... wish
they were still around... you could type stuff without "the government" (cesar)
spying on you... of course, the government, the angelic one, is the one you
owe your allegiance to... "the wages of sin is death"... Rock Stars... Mick Jagger
has noted that the "easy money" has been made, and now there are many many
artists, attempting to find a mass audience to create the economies of scale
necessary to "make the mega-bucks"... Mick Jagger is a graduate student of the
London School of Economics... really "smart" guy... wise too, it seems... So,
will artists have to now rely on concert ticket sales to "make a living"? Is it as it
was in the middle ages, when "travelling ministrels" attempted to fund their
"gypsy lifestyle choice"? Or can copyright laws still be enforced? In my opinion,
artists should consider asking for donations, or "tribute money" - some, I suspect
might make more in terms of donations than they are now, in terms of royalties...
which are subject to "accounting irregularities"... eventually, the answer to your
question will be no, I suspect, as the industry develops a system where all
media files are tagged, like fish in the ocean, and "accounted for"... But for now,
one MP3 file looks like any other MP3 file, to "the Internet Cloud Computer" (or,
SkyNet)...
.. what if "they" desired to destroy the profits associated with "media content"?..
You might ask, Why would they want to do that?... Well, I suspect communists
hate the idea of popular authors making "mucho deneiro" and would rather see
an economic system where books of equal weight, are sold for the same price..
"This book has a 100 pages, and so does this one, wherefore, they should be
sold at the same price" -- would be their logic, I suspect... That said, most people
I think would desire a physical copy of a piece of music, or a movie, and so, will
pay, for that dvd copy, or CD copy, rather than leave things in "software format",
subject to "deletion", or "code corruption"... in the Cloud, or on flashdrive... simply
not as satisfying as having a physical, authentic, copy - one you can be certain
has not been tampered with... unless, of course, it is an illegal copy - a forgery...
sad, but such industry exists..
The Wall Street Journal - if a business story does not appear in that
newspaper, but on the internet only, would you still trust that news story
as being authentic? Or would you think, "It does not matter whether this be
true or not, only whether many will choose to accept it as being true"? ... In
other words, do other persons' perceptions influence your own?.. The need
for "authority figures" is real, creates order out of chaos - but are such "authorities"
trustworthy? Look at how badly the Credit Rating Agencies called the last
financial crisis... That said, I wonder why Warner Brothers Inc. and other such
media content companies do not sell content directly to the consumer, but
choose to go through Amazon dot com rather? You would think they might do
both. But I think it is because such media content companies, though they
own that media (songs, or movies) do not own the manufacturing of the dvds
or cds... and so, their ability to say to the consumer, "buy from us, and you will
be getting authentic merchandise" is limited... and forgers can set up shop and
put the Warner Bros. logo, or brand, on their dvds and cds... It is a very real
problem, I think... Look at fake Gucci purses, out of Hong Kong... I think it was
Sun Tzu who said, Business is war... Or was it, Gordon Gekko (see movie,
Wall Street)?
Point of fact - it will NOT "literally cost you noting to pick up" .... unless you steal it. Duh.
Lil Rascal RC Videos hmm though
if i get this, can i stream downloaded videos on my phone?
its a smasung gaaxy s5 phone
I heard you repeat one idea about three times in a row, and it was just too wordy, the way to gain and hold an audience is to be clear and instructive while also being as brief as possible.
A brief or simple outline to refer to while talking will do wonders for a presentation. His repetition and backtracking IS distracting.
great vid bro! I find that it is awesome to bring to parties if your host has a sound system hooked up to there tv and use the chrome cast to be a "you tube DJ" .... just walk around and ask people what song they want to hear and play it from your smart phone on the chrome cast..... awesome stuff..
why is there a age restriction youtube, when i play through chromecast. i'm 38. and how do i override it.

You can, but 'mirrorcasting" chrome is through a third party extension, and they're all god awful and slow.

Okay people with iphones or Apple products. He came right out and said it only works with Smartphones and Android devices.
I just got one and it's great love it
Is this device Strictly internet/chrome based? Will it work with phones/tablets without wifi? Can I stream media files (videos, music, etc) I have on my Tablet with or without a wifi connection? For instance if I wanted to use it to run a presentation video I have on my tablet but would not be connecting to the local wifi, will it still stream?
No, it is strictly Wi-Fi based.
This device connects to the internet. From what i can tell, the device you use to control it does not stream its content to it. The chromecast streams the video or music from the internet.
"35 bucks, it'll literally cost you nothing to pick up this device"
No, it will literally cost $35. It will figuratively cost nothing.
can I use this to get showbo on a Samsung smart tv
I think using chromecast allows you to watch movies off your comp and onto your TV with out using flash drives and what not
Why are people doing these video this device is not new its been around for about 14months now if people dont understand what it is and what it does try doing some research of ur own but saying that i am an early adoptor and love new and especialy easy tech i bought, one of these for my parents and they love it once i showed them how to use it that is
