    It took around 90 seconds for the plane to spin all the way the ground from 16,000 feet. Imagine how horrifying that was for the passengers!

      90 seconds is a long time if you know you are facing imminent death. I wonder if you just want it over, of if you are thinking of your last seconds of life.

    On that plane there was a 5-year-old girl who was traveling with her father to spend Father's Day together (last Sunday was Father's Day here in Brazil), when the firefighters went to collect the bodies, the two were hugging each other. There was also a Venezuelan child who was with a puppy, all of them were found charred (including the dog itself), all the passengers were found charred. This accident was very tragic and much heavier than you guys imagine and the families are devastated, there were many people whose dreams were interrupted and they lost their lives. At this moment there is not much to ask questions or question because unfortunately we do not have all the answers, just pray for the families, friends and loved ones of the victims, Please pray for the families! 🙏 I wish everyone reading this a great day/night and good health always!

      Yes, the black box was already analyzed and it was scary. The transcript of the black box audio showed that, upon realizing that the plane was losing lift, the copilot asked what was happening. He said it was necessary to "power up" - an attempt to stabilize the aircraft and prevent it from crashing. But this, unfortunately, was not possible. About a minute passed between the realization of the loss of altitude and the plane hitting the ground. During this time, according to investigators, the audio recorded that the crew tried to react. The recording ends with screams and the crash of the aircraft hitting the ground.

It’s not like the captain flys the plane and the first officer just tags along In case the captain has a stroke or something. They both fly fairly equally. One pilot flys the plane while the other talks to ATC, monitors the instruments/systems, and does various calculations. They switch between these two rolls around 50/50. Also it’s a little unfair to automatically assume it was the first officers fault. It’s not like the first officer isn’t a fully fledged pilot. It’s not unheard of for the first officer to have even more flying experience, overall, than the captain. The Captain is just usually the one who has the most experience on that particular model of aircraft.

    For non pilots here: A stall is NOT about the aircraft's engines. An aerodynamic stall occurs when a wing(s) stops generating lift. Lift is generated by differential air pressure above and below the wing surfaces. A stall can occur for many reasons but by definition all stalls involve a disruption of the laminar airflow over the wing. A stall can occur on one wing or both wings simultaneously. A stall can occur at any any airspeed any bank angle. In general operating conditions (envelope) an aircraft has a specified stall (V) speed: V stall =
    All pilots practice stall/spins until they are blue in the face. I know I did.

    • @Tig442
      @Tig442 Месяц назад +2

      Great explanation! Although I would argue that stalls don't always involve a disruption of laminar airflow. Even laminar flow wings only have laminar flow for 30-60% of the wing and as a byproduct, have increased stall speeds. We at times induce turbulent airflow intentionally to delay that airflow separation (i.e. vortex generators) to prevent flow reversal where that high pressure on the bottom of the wing attempts to reverse to seek that low pressure on top (called adverse pressure gradient).

    Flat spin suggests asymmetric wing loading. One of the wings suffered a partial stall and the other did not, and that pulled the plane into a flat spin. They were trying to pitch the props to get more thrust - you could hear that in the video - but it was to no avail, they were just too low. Ice *could* very well be a cause - ice will quickly change the flight envelope of whatever surface it is contaminating, and all of a sudden, the pilots flying that plane find themselves test pilots, with very little time to react.
    That being said a LOT of things can cause that kind of wingstall/spin. Single engine failure, rudder hardover, hydraulic malfunction creating asymmetric flap deployment, and many of these accidents are caused by multiple factors. Whatever the cause, it won't help those 62 souls. 😞RIP to them.

    Flight radar shows the plane suddenly fell 17000 feet. in a flat spin thats enough altitude to apply full rudder in opposite direction, wait till it stops spinning (if it does), then forward pressure to break the stall (if that works) then recovers without breaking the wings off. The fact they could not achieve that leads me to believe they had a icing problem and simply could not and would not regain control. Icing has been a known issue on ATR-72s. This could be completely opposite of what actually happened but it's a possible theory.

    • @reason6835

      True. ATR’s are notorious for accumulating ice; though they do have de-icing equipment. I’m a pilot. It’s a type of stall called a flat spin. For whatever reason (probably ice) the plane lost lift due to not having enough airflow over the wings. Once the flat spin starts, it’s nearly impossible to recover from because none of the flight control surfaces have any effect. Normally you would nose down to recover from a stall but that requires the elevator to have airflow moving it. In a flat spin the air is coming up from the bottom of the aircraft, so the elevator, rudder and ailerons have no effect on the attitude of the aircraft.

    • @ChockHolocaust
      @ChockHolocaust Месяц назад +8

      Okay, this will help you understand what is going on and why it was almost certainly unrecoverable: First you need to understand about stalls...
      In a stall (where you drop altitude but do not spin around as you descend), it occurs because both wings lose lift at more or less the same rate and at the same time - typically from either going too slow, or pitching up steeply to the point where the airflow is no longer smoothly going over the wing - which is what a stalled wing is. So when both wings stall, the nose drops and you'll start losing altitude, but since both wings are stalled, you are not out of balance laterally, so you don't commence spinning. Thus in a stall you can simply push the stick forward to lower the angle of attack of the wings, then you will pick up speed to get the aeroplane flying again and you simply ease out of the dive by pulling the stick back gently to recover back to level flight. A spin however, is more complex...
      In a spin, what happens, is one wing stalls before the other (excessive yaw, ice on one wing but not the other, or strong asymmetric wind shear can all cause this to occur), so the wing which has lost flying speed first drops, but the other wing keeps generating lift and flying for a little bit longer. This makes the aeroplane start to auto-rotate as one wing flies and the other one doesn't, i.e. you roll toward the dropping stalled wing and commence turning as you do so. That's how an aeroplane enters a spin, and it'll usually stay in that spin unless you actively do something about it.
      If you've ever seen a sycamore seed falling and spinning as it does so, you get the idea; basically a falling sycamore seed is one wing flying and autorotating around the bulky mass of the seed. That's what that ATR was doing; the wing on the outside of the rotating movement was generating some lift, the other one, being that it was on the inside of the turn and therefore going slower, wasn't generating much lift.
      To recover an aeroplane from a spin, first you have to stop the autorotation, and you do that by pushing your foot down on the rudder pedal in the opposite direction to the rotation. When that rotation stops, you centre the rudder again, then you will be in a stall with both wings having lost lift, so the next thing you do is push the stick forward to lower the angle of attack and get airflow over the wings to generate lift again, and when you've got that, then you can ease the stick back to come out of the descent. However...
      The problem here with this aeroplane in the video, is that it is in a very flat spin with not very much forward speed, and this means the rudder is ineffective in stopping the autorotation in the same way that the rudder on a boat does nothing when there is no forward movement. There is also the possibility that the wings and the disturbed air coming off them, is either too turbulent to allow good rudder effectiveness, or what is more likely, is that the wings and fuselage are basically blocking the airflow to the rudder and elevators because of the flattish angle it is coming down at (this is a known problem with aeroplane types where the elevator is situated high up on the tailplane). With little to no useable airflow going past the rudder and elevators on the tail assembly, there is no chance for any rudder input to stop the autorotation, nor for the elevators to push the nose down, which are the two things you need to do to come out of a spin. Another problem is the sheer mass of the engines, which once you are spinning like that, being two big metal lumps way out on the wings, tend to give the spinning motion a lot of momentum, which can be difficult to overcome even if you do have sufficient airflow over the tail control surfaces.
      Another issue, and one the airlines probably prefer you did not know about, is that pilots these days are not always taught how to do spin recoveries and are typically 'autopilot jockeys' with nowhere near the hands-on 'stick and rudder skills' pilots had years ago before there were computers which could do all the work for them; this is fine most of the time when nothing is going wrong, but it's not good when things go tits up. Quite often, pilots these days are taught 'spin avoidance' in the hopes that they'll never have to recover from one, because the optimistic hope is they'll never get into one in the first place, which is fine until you actually do end up in a spin (as this ATR did), because if you've never been taught how to get out of one and practiced it a few times (which is good fun actually), then you are basically screwed. It's not as intuitive a recovery process as one might imagine; if you don't know to use the rudder to stop the autorotation and not the ailerons (using the ailerons would the worst thing you could do), but it is what you might be tempted to do if you didn't know any better because from the cockpit, a spin looks a lot like a roll, where you would use the ailerons to stop that. Not saying these pilots didn't know how to do a spin recovery, but you might be surprised how many pilots these days have never done a spin recovery, since it isn't a mandatory part of the PPL curriculum any longer, as it was back when I learned to fly, where you literally had to do quite a few of them, some from pretty low altitude too! ATPL training rarely has people practicing spins, not even in the simulators.
      Having said all that, even if this crew did know how to do a spin recovery, they might just simply have been screwed, because some really bad flat spins are literally unrecoverable, and even when they are recoverable, you do need quite a lot of height (and time) to pull it off, and that thing was dropping at 11,000 feet per minute, which is not something an airliner would ever normally do. And of course if there was ice on the wings or the tailplane, that would have prevented them from making a recovery as well, and unfortunately this is quite likely to have been the case. Turboprop airliners such as the ATR typically fly at 17-20,000 feet, often in clouds, and that's where icing conditions frequently occur. Not only that, the ATR 72 only has de-icing boots on the leading edge of the wings; if ice forms behind those, there isn't much they can do about it other than descend out of the icing conditions to warmer air and hope it melts or breaks off. The ATR 72 is a good aeroplane (even if it is a noisy bastard) but like all regional turboprops, it has to be flown in a way which gives due respect to the weather conditions.

    My theory is that one wing quite literally froze. With the way Brazil is cold the wing could've easily froze, and with that pilot with 5+ yrs experience, I think he wanted to descend so he didn't freeze but I think ATC didn't give him authorization to.

    Early analysis from aviation community, including other ATR72 pilots, believe either pilots like did not executed stall recovery procedures correctly or stall recovery procedures were ineffective due to icing at its cruise altitude of 16000.

    Claramente el avión ATR 72 cae fuera de control, sin velocidad horizontal.
    Lo más probable es una entrada en pérdida seguida de una barrena por acumulación de hielo sobre las alas (Considerando la meteorología y la tendencia a acumular hielo de esta aeronave).
    Lamentable que no se haya logrado recuperar de la pérdida siendo que se dió a 17000 pies ( aprox 5182 metros). Dada la altitud de inicio de la caída, descarto Windshear..
    No hay sobrevivientes. Lamentable!
