Despite its proximity to urban high-rises and a bustling main road, this unique structure acts as a fortification against the Colombo heat, traffic, and noise. Featuring specially designed double screens to limit western and southern exposure, the building reveals stunning views of the adjoining marsh and seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings.
Designed to balance living, work, and leisure, the building uses creative volumes, materials, and tectonic devices to foster a cooler microclimate. It promotes natural light, marsh views, rainwater harvesting, and biodiversity through thoughtfully designed gardens. Positioned by the water, it includes garden spaces that serve as detention areas during monsoons, protecting the living and workspaces from flooding.
Covering a compact footprint of 2720 sqft, this three-level structure includes:
Ground Level: 4-vehicle parking, kitchen, model making room, and guest suite, each opening into a courtyard.
1st Floor: Lobby and workspace.
2nd Floor: Meeting area, lounge, library, and northern wing with a bedroom, balcony, and open-to-sky bathroom.
3rd Floor: Living and entertainment pavilion overlooking biological ponds, paddy fields, and edible gardens.
Recent studies by the University of Moratuwa show that the building maintains an indoor temperature several degrees cooler than outside, thanks to its green design and landscape strategies.
