Maria Quitéria was a woman who lived in Bahia, a province of the Empire of Brazil, and disguised herself as a man to fight during the Brazilian War of Independence (1822-1823). After the war, she was received by Emperor Pedro I in person, and asked only one thing from him: to write a letter for her father, apologising for her escape from home.

A part of me doubt that Disney's upcoming remake will continue the advancing evolution of stories that originated in Chinas ancient past as they seem to be completely devoid of neuance and original storytelling, and ideas. On top of that they always have to appeal to modern Chinas creative censorship. So yeah, I dont have high hopes and my standards is set pretty low for the upcoming movie. Hopefully I'm dead wrong but Disney haven't exactely treated any of the other remakes with respect and appreciation and its only been spectacular soulless cashgrabs.

The Tang dynasty was also when something like Wuxia (武侠) first took shape as a literary genre (initially called Chuanqi (传奇)) , complete with both male and female swashbuckling protagonists in the stories
(although legends of women with extraordinary martial prowess emerged even earlier, with one of the earliest and most notable being The Maiden of Yue (越女), who was said to have lived during the Spring and Autumn Period.
Of course, there's also Fu Hao and some woman warriors from as early as the Shang Dynasty, but their stories did not get propagated in classical Chinese literature, and we mainly know of them from archaeological work.)
So yeah, among such stories, Mulan is the most well known outside China, but she's not the only one and not even the most extraordinary one in China.
Most importantly, a common theme in these stories is that the heroines are admired/respected.
(even in the Ballad of Mulan, her comrades were simply surprised when they found out she's a woman. There was no negative feeling.)
So it's sort of upsetting to see Disney's live-action Mulan movie depicting ancient Chinese society as if it's averse to the idea of woman warriors ("as a girl you must hide your martial ability lest people see you as a witch!"), which is a *gross* distortion of actual history, portraying ancient Chinese society as far more sexist than it really was.
I mean, have you guys seen all the Chinese Wuxia web-dramas that are proliferating these days?
Where do you think the screenwriters got the ideas for their cool femme fatale characters? Influence from modern western fantasy/ comic books?
No! Such concepts have been a notable trope in Chinese literature for more than a thousand years !!!

The Xianbei-ruled Northern Wei took great steps to sinicize into Han culture to legitimize their rule. Mulan may have had a mix of Han and Xianbei ancestry since there were still a number of elite Han families (ie. The Li family where ultimately Emperor Taizong of Tang came from centuries later) that remained in the North after the fall of the Western Jin Dynasty. Even the ruling Touba clan changed its surname to Yuan from Emperor Xiaowen onwards.

Using brush, I think it's more natural to continue writing below previous letter, it would be uncomfortable to move your brush diagonally after each letters.

Mulan could also very well be Hunnic (or Han Chinese, Xianbei, Qiang, could be any of those really).
After the Three Kingdom area lots of nomad people were allowed to live in Northern China by the government. They've done this because the northern population were severely thinned by warfare, and warlords like Cao Cao desperately need both production and military supplement. For instance the Wuhuan, one of proto-Xianbei tribes, were mercenary cavalry force of Cao Cao. And southern Xiongnu/Hunnic people have been living in Chinese rule for centuries since Han Dynasty.
It was recorded that millions of nomad people lived in northern China during Jin Dynasty, even surpass the Han Chinese population in some counties, which bring headache for the central government.
In the video it said Mulan could lived during Northern Wei (Tuoba Xianbei) Dynasty, this is one of the most popular guess indeed. Northern Wei's army were mainly Xianbei and Han Chinese, but Xiongnu sometimes were considered Xianbei as nomad coalition often were: a military complex. Some researcher pointed out Mulan is more like a Hunnic name. But all those are merely speculations.
Fun fact: Tuoba in Xianbei language means "Quilt".
Every Chinese student learn the Mulan Shi/poetry in middle school, which was written by an anonymous/unknown poet presumely in Wei Dynasty period. The poetry is very interesting and beautifully written, I can still recite every word of it nowadays:

Tuoba in Xianbei did not meen quilt, instead it is recorded in the history of Northern Wei that 北俗谓土为托,谓后为跋,故以为氏. Thus in Xianbei, land or soil is Tuo, lord or ruler is ba, thus Tuoba means ruler of the land. What these two transcriptions correspond to, someone that speaks Mongolian or related languages could help.

    • @Anthony-le2xm
      @Anthony-le2xm 4 года назад

@@XuerLi Indeed. The Tuoba, who were the dominant Xianbei, were definitely Mongolic, while the Yuwen where likely Turkic Xiongnu who became Xianbeinised. There are about seven Tuoba words regarding professions such as "guard" or "killer" transcribed, and all of which end in 真zhen, pronounced jin in Eastern Han Chinese. The "-jin" occupational suffix is unique to Mongolic, so Tuoba is definitely Mongolic. It is mentioned that the Yuwen language was extremely different from the Tuoba language, and that 宇Yu, pronounced Ho in Eastern Han Chinese, meant sky, and 文wen, pronounced men in Eastern Han Chinese, meant people. There is no cognate in Mongolic, but in Turkic it is possibly transcribing "Kökmen", celestial people.

The history for Chinese women joining the force can be dated back to the Shang dynasty, many queens and concubines had helped their husband, the emperor to fight against the enemy according to the Shang’ written accounts, Jiaguwen(甲骨文). The most famous one was Fuhao(婦好), wife of Shang emperor Wuding(武丁), and she was considered as the first-ever female great general in Chinese history. During her years in the army, she helped her husband to win the battle of Qiang(羌) and Bafang(巴方), and let the territory of Shang empire expand into modern Shanxi and Sichuan area.

It is also bery likely her family was not a common peasant family but a hereditary soldier family that exchange the soldier duty of the land. Refuse the military duty will lead to lose of land. Hence there was a urgent need to send one person to army.
Also, xianbei women, following normadic tradition, have more significant role in society than traditional Han women. But at that time point, the northern China was heavily influenced by Xianbei culture. Women in sixteen kingdom era until early Tang had relative higher social significance. Women can openly manage the family estate and go to court for legal case, which is not acceptable in previous Chinese Han culture.

It’s a term used by nomads broadly applied to anyone who rule. For example Tang emperors are also called Khagan by the Turks and in many official letters from the northern nomads address the southern emperors as Khagan. Moreover, it’s really narrowminded and racist now to think only Han people are chinese... come on, it’s 2019 now.

According to the military system of the Northern Dynasties, if Hua Mulan really existed, she might have been born into a military noble family. She had to go to war, otherwise her family would lose political and economic privileges (land). The poems about her military equipment and rapid promotion of rank also illustrate that her family has a high status. Furthermore, the soldiers around Hua Mulan should be private soldiers and servants brought from her home. They are very clear about Hua Mulan's identity. And she kept a certain social distance from other knights, which hide her gender nicely. -----From Zhihu

You are looking from the pov of a modern person. In ancient time, big boob woman is considerated a nympho or lusty. That 's why the ancient Chinese bra is like an apron, to flatten out the breast.

@Kings and Generals, you should make a episode about tadeusz kosciusko, his life pretty incredible and deserves some attention.

Makes more sense for Mulan to be a nomadic hero of probably of Hunic or Mongolian origin, rather than Chinese, considering the know culture and morals of the people at the time . Very educational video - always though Mulan was just a Disney movie!

Well the idea of Chinese was a cultural one, not ethnic or racial. For example, Cantonese and Hokkien people were not "Chinese" until late Qin/early Han dynasty. This happened before there were "Mongols", who ever themselves a mix of hundreds of tribes. The Tuoba adopted Chinese culture and identified as Chinese themselves and later the population would have been absorbed into the next dynasty of China.
