    I love your videos. I am 79years old and in the last two years I have made 4 raised beds and started to grow my own vegetables. I have also managed to grow 4 clementine trees. 1 nectarine 2 lemon and have just potted an apricot seed. I have done all this by just watching your videos and it has given me an interest and new lease of life and I would like to say a very big thank you you make everything so easy.

    On of my all time favourite apples trees grew from seed, some you win, some you loose. That tree has a sucker growing about 5’ away and weirdly those apples are different again. I’ve recently been searching friends allotments for rare old varieties and grafting them. One I’ve managed to graft never has grubs, is super sweet and keeps from October to Feb. Great videos! : all the best - Steve

    Many sources say 'Don't grow a fruit tree from a seed', but some people have done it and gotten delicious results... ;-) I am going to be adventurous and try from seed a certain variety not found here (then I'll graft it to an existing apple tree)

    • @ProjectDiaries
      @ProjectDiaries  6 лет назад +4

      There's a 1 in a million chance it'll be amazing so it's always worth a shot if you have the space and time. I just didn't want people to wonder why it's more than likely going to be inedible after all those years :)

    • @NarnianLady
      @NarnianLady 6 лет назад +10

      The same can be said of any trees, including citruses - it is always a potential surprise. Still, people and nature have grown fruit trees from seed for thousands of years... There is a wild apple forest in Central Asia, in Uzbekistan or Tajikistan, and foreign researchers visiting there were amazed at the taste of those apples. Some of your videos also show how to grow a tree from seed (lemons), which is also risky :)
      In Russia one can buy seeds for any fruit tree imaginable, and apparently they grow up well and produce. In the West, it is not fashionable any more, so gardening centers discourage people from doing it... which is a pity.
      I will try to grow a seedling from a variety I love, and graft it onto to an existing tree just to get a little taste.

    Not so much apple, you will find those farther northeast in Pennsylvania growing wild.

    My thought is that in an orchard there are many of the same trees next to each other, so you may get some good seeds, and if not as long as you have the room why not try to create the next best apple cultivar?

  • @lufe8773
    @lufe8773 4 года назад

    Thanks for the information it is so easy to grow trees and a good thing to do for the planet. I wonder though if you do use apple seeds from a commercial orchard I would have thought the chances are they will have been pollinated from the same variety. Unless of course it was done by a bee with a sense of humor (joking). Also if you do grow them from seed they too can be used as root stock and other varieties grafted onto them. Just a thought

    I too have decided to be somewhat adventurous in that I have collected seeds from three different wild apples or some would call crab apples. All produce distinctly different apples one off which my mother compares the taste to a macintosh. And if they grow for me and I can get more than one two grow I'm going to graft them together in a few combinations and see what I can get. So this video I will be watching several times I'm sure. And thank you for all your help. I have quite the collection of plants and trees going on. My lemon tree I started back in March is about 6-8 inches tall now. Along with so many others. Sorry that you suffer with a disability I to have things going on. It was uplifting to know that my country is not the only one that puts its people through the ringer before they approve anything though. I know how much it sucks I'm still waiting for an answer and the ability to pay my bills and it's been 2 years.

    🍏🌳🍎 It's important to grow apples from seeds. Golden Delicious and Granny Smith varieties both just sprang up from tossed seeds! lol Have you tried growing elderberries from cuttings? You just put a cutting in a jar of water on your window sill, and they quickly shoot roots like a willow tree does! 🍎🍎

    You can intentionally pollinate a couple select branches and be pretty sure what your getting. It’s also a good way to possibly come up with trees that have desirable traits from both trees such as disease resistance. But yes just taking random seeds and planting them is a crap shoot.

    I'd reccomend everyone grow from seed, sure it may not taste better but you have a 1 in 10,000 chance of hitting the taste jackpot and sell it for millions

    i've always wanted to try and make some kind of fruit salad tree. i read somewhere that you can graft things like plums to apple trees, but the success rate would be low. though, facts on the internet may not always be correct. but it wouldn't hurt to try.

      rallekralle11 No. this will not work. Things that will work in one tree would be Plum, Peach, Apricot, Almond, and Cherry all grafted together. This is because they belong to the Prunus genus.

      AtoZ Botanicals alright, fair enough.
      That would still be a decent fruit salad ;)

      rallekralle11 Yea, or on a separate tree you can have different citrus: Lemon, Orange, etc.

    You plant a number of then in pots/bags then transplant the ones you want to keep into the orchard. If the seeds came from wild trees then you can use the root stock of the ones you do not want to keep since they have proven survival genetics. Any other way of starting an orchard cost a lot of money.
