To explain the Japanese government system back then: they are a DUAL government system with an EMPEROR and a SHOGUN.... Ceremonies and religious stuff is controlled by the Emperor (you dont hear much about him and they live in Kyoto)... the SHOGUN is the political and military leader of japan. the provinces aka FIEF in japan are ruled by various DAIMYOS throughout history and a SHOGUN is someone who rules over all the DAIMYOS. a Samurai is a CLASS in japan... aka Samurai class, Merchant class, etc. Samurai is the highest class because japan respect the warrior system. a Samurai has 2 kinds... a RONIN and a LORD or VASSAL. If you have a lord you serve or you yourself is a lord, then you are VASSAL/LORD samurai. If you are landless and lordless, you are a Ronin, or mercenary/wandering samurai.
Fun fact: a Ninja is a Job, a Samurai is a Class, so a samurai is not a Job. Which means you can be a Samurai Ninja aka a Samurai class who fulfill his duty as a ninja. the 5 Reagents are all powerful Daimyos under the Taiko (basically the Taiko is a Shogun, but he just gave himself a new title). The 5 Reagents are supposed to watch over the Taiko's son until he can become a Shogun himself, but they don't like each other. Toranaga is just the Daimyo with the most power and LEGITIMACY to obtain the Shogun title for himself, that's why the other 4 fears him, because he belongs to the lineage clan MINOWARA (irl name MINAMOTO) that was once a Shogun family in the past.
This period of Japan is a few years after what is known in Japan as SENGOKU JIDAI, when bunch of Daimyos fighting each other until one dude ODA NOBUNAGA managed to unite most of Japan under him but then was betrayed by one of his own vassal and died, that vassal was then killed by another of Oda's Vassal (Hideyoshi aka the TAIKO of this show), and the Taiko then became Shogun. He ban swords from everyone except the samurai class and then he fought the mongols, and then he try to invade Korea and failed. As for the Catholics, they been around since oda nobunaga time, its how Oda managed to get guns to have upper hand against the other daimyos. But the catholics/portugeuse hid Japan from rest of the world, so they can benefit from japan alone. Toranaga (aka IRL name Tokugawa) was a hostage of Oda's clan as a kid and became oda's friend and ally. Oda help him get his clan back together and Tokugawa basically covered Oda's land from behind and managing to conquer 3 major clans. This is why Toranaga is the biggest Daimyo at the start of Shogun series.

The daughter-in-law having the baby is not in the castle that they're at. The woman being "held hostage" is the heir's mother in Edo with Torinaga's daughter-in-law who is about to give birth. The baby who was killed because his father fucked up, is the son of the woman we see in that room, the grandaughter of Hiromatsu, the older man who is with Torinaga a lot.

      1596 San Felipe incident
On October 19, 1596, the Spanish ship San Felipe was shipwrecked on Urado in Kōchi en route from Manila to Acapulco in the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade. The local daimyō Chōsokabe Motochika that ruled Tosa province during the Sengoku Era seized the cargo of the richly laden Manila galleon, and the incident escalated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, ruling Taikō of Japan. The pilot of the ship suggested to Japanese authorities that it was Spanish modus operandi to have missionaries infiltrate a country before an eventual military conquest, as had been done in the Americas and the Philippines. This led to the crucifixion of 26 Christians in Nagasaki, the first lethal persecution of Christians by the state in Japan.

These events, and others that happened later, led to the expulsion of Portugal and Spain from Japan, and the Tokugawa Shogunate, established in 1603, limited entry into Japan to the Protestant Netherlands, which promised not to propagate Christianity in Japan, and the Qing Dynasty. Japan still was trading with Portugal and Spain through Southeast Asia such as Macao and Manila.

blackthorne was sentenced to death, but ishido wants him alive to use him and control him for political tool against the christian lords,
so the uncle said what if i stop it somehow, so then he does that with the bandits, and but he cant just give him to ishido it would like ishido orders it.
so he gave the anjin back to toranaga, but then toranaga learns everything and he also now wants to use the anjin as political leverage.
both lords cannot show this publicly
    so:
the portuguese and the christian lords wants the anjin dead
ishido wants the anjin send to him for execution but he's not going to execute him, he wants him as political leverage
torinaga also wants the anjin after learning about the portuguese plans but both ishido and torinaga cant show this publicly

A samurai is like an English knight - an elite warrior with a code of conduct. They swear their lives to someone higher up in rank and receive lands to govern (or they just serve directly as warriors). Higher ranked samurai are lords/nobility, with different levels of power and many samurai in fealty to them. The five on the Regent's Council are the highest ranks, with the most lands and warriors/subordinates. They are relatively equal, though they have different focuses of where they got their power and influence.
Ishida can't openly, directly challenge Toranaga - neither one has the manpower, considering that the other three would take sides as well. Right now, Ishida has the Christians on his side.

He didn't know. If the assassin goes to Toranagas room, then it's the Anjin that's killed so who cares. If the assassin goes after Anjin, then Torinaga is there to kill the assassin whilst at the same time confirming that the information Anjin is giving him is real. He didn't know, but he set up a position that would confirm things for him no matter how they played out.

The names of the characters have been changed in the drama, but if you search for the ``Honnō-ji Incident,'' which took place several decades before this story, you can get a sense of the characters' complex human relationships and immersion.

The *SHŌGUN* (supreme military commander) became the actual ruler of Japan and the *MIKADO* (emperor) lost/decreased it's power by the passing of time. The last ruler couldn't take the title of Shōgun because he was a born a peasant/farmer so he accepted the title of *KAMPAKU* (grand chancellor/advicer of the emperor) and then later became *TAIKŌ* (former/retired Kampaku). In the books, Toranaga's opponents wants to eliminate him because he came from the Minowara, one of the 3 legendary ancient Shogunate families who ruled Japan for centuries. The Minowara were the first Shōguns.
P.S. - out of respect, Steve, you're one beautiful mf. Like no hate bro just compliments. sorry bisexual here. And John you're great! Keep these videos coning. 💪🏼🇮🇹😁

The baby was the son of the young man who spoke out of turn and insulted Lord Ishido - he promised to kill himself and end his line to repay his insolence. Hence the mother trying to kill herself along with them.

The baby's own dad, the big guy, condemned his own son to death. He could have just said he will commit Seppuku on his own. His wife's family is powerful enough to have kept his son alive along with the wife. Bushido, the Way of the Warrior, was a Code that was Sacred at that time and place
