Thank you for the tour! You have a very nice place, not that I expected any less from you! My green beans didn't do well the first planting -- only a few came up. So I added more, and then just as they really started producing, we got super hot weather, and the beans took a siesta! Now they're producing again! Yay!

My pole beans did so-so, but my bush beans are going nuts. I have mostly raised, elevated beds (which my daughter built for me)and they are a dream.

It just wasn't a good bean year for us over all. We've had plenty to eat but not any extra to preserve. Oh well, there's always next year!

I too had to plant beans 3 times before they actually started growing. I planted 3 different varieties but so far the Dragon Tongue beans are the only ones that germinated.

Ours wasn't a germination issue, they came up okay but then just go munched down by a combination of snails and ear wigs :(

@Ourstoneyacres OH bummer. I can only imagine the disappointment as I'm no stranger to losing the fruits of my labor. My entire spring garden, with the exception of 1 head of cabbage, some lettuce and radish, was lost to the groundhog invasion.

After three years, we gave up on planting in grow bags. Tomatoes and potatoes just never did very well. I think it's just because of the amount of water they need. They do great in the raised beds. Glad to hear that you're not worrying about the powdery mildew. I'm happy to follow your example. It just seems to be what happens this time of year. Enjoyed your garden tour.

    • @StoneyAcresGardening

Glad you liked it. I'm leaning towards only doing greens and herbs in grow bags for the same reasons.

I’ve also found that grow bags demand an unreasonable amount of water. Though mulching the top really well has helped a good bit.

Great garden tour Rick nicely done.
I just wanted to say thank you for all you do, its really appreciated.
Tomatoes here got blight so they're done, powdery mildew is hitting the squash and peppers are taking forever.
Its been a ho hum year won't be long now to get ready to put it to bed for the winter.
The years fly by so fast anymore.
Got some fall crops in have to see what happens.

Did you guys not get the grasshopper infestation? I hardly have a leaf left on my honeycrisp apple tree. We are in Ogden and there isn't a single yard without them. I hand pick them every morning before the sun hits the plants and with a flashlight at night. So many in my neighborhood gave up. I kept my kale and broccoli as catch crops and lots of things have survived. They also hang out in the sweet potatoes and don't eat the leaves. That is what got my bush beans spring crop. Thecpole beans are now producing and are doing okay. I have netted my larger tomatoes and they didn't bother the romas. All of my cabbages and other brassicas like collards, which I grow for wraps, got desimated. When they first appeared in early June, the diatomaceous earth helped as well as sticky pads. This is the second year they have descended on the garden like this. It is heart breaking.

It was an absolutely terrible year for every cucurbit we tried. Between several different insects and disease, it was disheartening for sure. We’re just now getting a few cucumbers and summer squash after three sowings. I’m going to try all parthenocarpic cucumbers under cover next year.

I ❤ sweet potatoes. This year I only planted 10 slips in the inground bed oit front, but I dig get 54 slips planted in three raised beds.
I harvested all of the SP today from the front bed and the biggest was over 2 pounds, the rest were 1 pound and smaller. I should have left them in until our ftost date, October 20th, but I need the space to grow onion sets, garlic, turnips, carrots, and rutabagas this fall/winter.
Can't wait to see how many sweet potatoes you harvest this year.
Will you be doing any cooking videos of the veggies you harvested?

No squash bugs?!!! Cool! I didn’t grow squash this year because I didn’t want to deal with squash bugs. I think those were butternut squash, not acorn. Great tour! What part of Utah are you in? It’s exciting that you can grow almonds.

I got a cabbage transplant Monday at farmers market 20 minutes from my apartment. It’s in container now, can I keep it in container or transplant it to ground in community garden?
First frost date northwest Indiana October 1-15- I hear I’m zone 5... zip code 46341... so mid August I planted by seed cabbage, lettuce and carrots. Should they not produce, I have cabbage plant that hopefully makes up for it.
Avocado I have tall plant, mini plant and another vine growing in container. Better than I anticipated!. Kale by transplant I enjoy on salads and trying to let it harvest more so I have winter harvest.
Blueberries planted by transplant have vines but no crop. I hear they take longer like 12-18 months before first harvest. Strawberries planted by transplant small harvest, rabbits and deer like to eat them. On package I noticed both continue growing for 3-5 years...lt also saidoutdoor spring and summer, indoor fall and winter, first time for both for me.
Herbs I buy in plants -- rosemary, sage, peppermint - but not much harvest. One I did by plant , basil, and it did ok. Swiss chard and chives also by seed and only got two chives andNo Swiss chard crop. Aloe plant outside and very slow growing.
