People dont understand that the prices of things are never going back down. This inflation is deeper than we think. Those buying groceries are well aware that the real inflation is much over 10%. What the f***. I repeat what the f***. I thought it was super dovish. He had two initial questions where there was no way in hell he could articulate how he was going to say we're going to do rate cuts without saying he didn't want to do Ray cuts. I think you are misunderstanding his tone. It was pure dovish and setting the table for cuts. Now if he says it straight out the market would have jumped. I think people are reading between the lines here
Follow the numbers not the words - revising all key numbers up is not dovish I'm afraid
To summarise further "things will be higher for longer". Simple.
His "vibes" were dovish.
His words and the pretend data were hawkish.
His whole job is to keep things kinda neutral so the market doesn't crash, and the market doesn't run.
But don't get it twisted... Powell wants to be remembered as Paul Volker 2.0. I'd be absolutely shocked if he doesn't have the man's portrait in his office.
