    Mithril has the ability to drive away evil and heal good things. That's why Sauron can freely handle it with no problems and a Balrog can sleep peacefully beneath the largest Mithril vein in Arda for thousands of years. It makes perfect sense when you only think about it for 5 seconds. 😂😂

      Ahh you see the Mithril in the mountain is... unrefined?? Or you have to be very, VERY close to it for its anti-evil properties to work... and Sauron, uh, he is SO evil. His Evil Level is higher than the the mithril so it doesn't affect him.

      Iirc the mithril lore the show invented was that it was made as a result of a balrog fighting someone holding a Silmaril, so maybe they intended that it has both good and bad elements to it, so anything made out of it can be used either for good or evil depending on the user? How does the One Ring, a ring in which Sauron poured ALL of his anger, his malice, and his will to dominate all life, take months to corrupt people entirely, while a piddly arse little Dwarven ring, which is OBJECTIVELY weaker than the One Ring, takes a matter of hours? This is asinine. This is absolutely stupid. The writing on this show could not be worse.

    • @MajorSmurf
      @MajorSmurf 3 дня назад +53

      It's just also the fact that the elves are insanely attuned to things like magic or unseen world, Sauron treaded so carefully for all those six hundred years and he wouldn't risk them sensing any kind of corrupting power in them or him. That's why the corruption doesn't start until the one ring is forged and he puts it on. Even than he fails as the elves wipe off those rings faster than I write the word "me". That's why he besieges Eregion because his plan failed and now he wants his rings back and go to plan B which is giving them to dwarves and humans. The dwarves and humans shouldn't have them yet. The one ring is responsible for the corruption of the other rings and it do so slowly, all expect the three which he had no knowledge of. The rings of powers themselves weren't corrupted by Sauron. FFS this is basic second age knowledge.

    • @markgrehan3726
      @markgrehan3726 3 дня назад +12

      I still don't understand how these rings work so quickly, they seem to influence people even before they put them on and even the elves seem corrupted by them in minutes.

    • @silverswordsmith5424
      @silverswordsmith5424 3 дня назад +28

      It's also 100% not how it works. The dwarves were actually *never* corrupted by their rings because dwarves are stubborn and naturally resilient to corruption. That's why there are no dwarf wraiths. Four of the rings were devoured or destroyed by dragons and Sauron recovered the other three because ultimately the dwarven rings failed to do what he wanted them to. They did indirectly bring about the collapse of a few dwarven civilizations though because it was the treasure troves of wealth, that the rings enabled the dwarves to amass, that attracted the dragons.

    • @knightoffailure1869
      @knightoffailure1869 3 дня назад +7

      @@dragonmaster1360 So, just to be totally fair, the speed with which the one ring corrupts is at least as much dependent on the wearer as the power of the ring itself, hence why Bilbo was mostly okay after fifty years and Sméagol was essentially lost the instant he saw it, so it could be possible for an incredibly weak dwarven lord to be corrupted very quickly. Unfortunately (or fortunately since I’m hoping for this show to crash and burn as soon as possible since it’s clearly beyond saving), that’s not how King Durin has been portrayed, and the dwarven rings were never said to make anyone literally insane, so they still botched it up completely, I just enjoy being specific about how they did so.

      It was in the films where Sauron poured his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life into the One ring. The events of the film and book universe are legally completely unrelated to RoP's universe. So for all we know the one ring will only contain saurons humor, his apathy and his will to take a vacation.
      The universes are so far removed from each other by design, legal necessity and the sheer incompetence of the writers that it is pure folly to look for similarities. It's like examining the diarrhea turd of a sick dog to learn about the dietary habits of its owner's cousin that lives on a separate continent.

    Annatar proposing they give rings to trustworthy men should sound absurd to an elf like Celebrimbor who's thousands of years old. "Trustworthy" men aren't going to live more than a few centuries, basically the blink of an eye to an elf and their heirs might not be as trustworthy.
    You say often that Rings of Power does a terrible job at conveying distances, but it also does a terrible job at conveying time scales and how different beings perceive it.
    In the Lord of the Rings at the Council of Elrond, they considered a great many possible solutions on what to do with the One Ring. They rejected the idea of burying it or tossing it into the sea because that's ultimately a temporary solution. Sauron might take thousands of years to find his ring, but he will find it and by that point Middle Earth would be even less prepared to fight him. That's a solution men could consider, but not elves or a wizard.

      The rings were forged in 1500 of the second age. We don't know exactly when he was born, but it was before 1490YT in the first age because we know he followed his father, Feanor, in exile then. That makes him at the very least 2190 years old during the events of the series.
      He's very likely younger (but not by much) than Galadriel who was born in 1362 of the Years of the Trees.
      That makes her 10×(1500-1362)+590+1500 = 3470 years old when the rings were forged.

    It’s truly amazing how very simple, sometimes one line aspects of Tolkien’s lore have been mishandled and over complicated to create such nonsense. Sauron deceiving Celebrimbor could have been so much simpler if he just showed up as Annatar, spent some time making friends, said “hey, let’s make some cool rings to give to people we like”, and then proceeded to sneakily make them evil without being obvious about it. Instead we have all these complicating factors like Celebrimbor betraying Gilgalad which should arouse suspicion, Dwarves immediately turning evil from the rings which should arouse suspicion, and workers seeing demons which should arouse suspicion. Every added detail makes everyone involved look dumber, just like Galadriel actively searching for and finding Sauron makes her look dumber than if she’d just never looked. I guess that’s the lesson of RoP, more can be worse.

      On one hand, I can appreciate the difficulty of the writers' task. Tolkien never wrote much about the Second Age besides the downfall of Numenor. It reads more like a history book than a novel - Sauron stays at Eregion crafting the rings with Celebrimbor for *800 years* for instance; there is obviously no way to adapt that to a tv series. On top of that, they did not receive rights to all the necessary material which further limits what they can do and forces them to make stuff up
      That being said, maybe trying to adapt the entire second age was a stupid decision to begin with. They should have focused on a particular event or period of it, whatever they had the rights for.
      Or maybe not touch the second age at all, and make a Lord of the Rings TV series since that's what they had the rights for. Peter Jackson's movies were forced to remove a big bunch of scenes because of runtime issues, a TV series, for example one season per book, would give them much more runtime to include all the scenes that never made it to the PJ movies, and not have to resort to stuff they made up themselves since they clearly don't have the skills for that

    I think it's important, here is the very basic rundown of what this season/section of second age should be like.
    Sauron been missing for ages, Sauron appears as Annatar to the elves
    Galadriel and Gil-Galad take one look and go hell nah get the fck out of here but have nothing on him really
    Celebrimbor decides to invite him to Eregion despite all of that
    Six hundred years pass with Annatar and Celebrimbor researching and making many things including prototypes in the lesser rings before forging the rings of power which were all intended for the elves
    Annatar goes off for a while to forge the one ring while Celebrimbor makes three more rings in secret
    Elves get their rings and puts them on
    Annatar finishes the forging of the one ring, puts it on
    Elves go "Oh fck" and wipe off the rings on their fingers and hide them
    Sauron realising his plan messed up, besieges Eregion and captures Celebrimbor
    He tortures him and forcing him to reveal where the rings are which will be later be called the nine and seven
    He than makes himself a nice Celebrimbor flag
    Sauron gathers up the rings over many battles and sieges and what not, before finally collecting them all and handing them out to dwarves and humans as a gift (Unsure if this is as Annatar or just shapeshifting into many different forms)
    Bam... that is a very simple guide to this part of the second age. How much did the writers get right? Fcking none of it.

    • @jrconway3
      @jrconway3 3 дня назад +11

      Even if they wanted to condense the timeline, they could still get it right by having them start the series with Annatar already present and they have already spent hundreds of years testing the rings.
      They can have Gilgalad and Galadriel be questioning it still. Galadriel arrives in Eregian to show concern again, be presents some leader rings, she tells him off about why she left Eregion, then returns to Lorien again.
      Annatar later appears and congratulations them on their work, but it is time for him to leave for a while.
      Celebrimbor decides to make the three rings after he leaves (perhaps by the end of Season 1) and presents one of the rings to Durin as a sign of their friendship.
      Season 1 could end with Sauron putting on the "One Ring" and Celenrimbor has his "oh crap" moment, and have Season 2 be preparing to defend Eregion from Sauron.

    Something that still infuriates me about the ring making is the fact, they could not get the Mithril to bond with the lesser metals in season 1, prompting Galadriel to give up her dagger og gold and silver from Valinor.
    But in season 2 they now dont need that?, Also I know this is for the next episode, but for some reason they cant reuse the Mithril anymore? they dont try and remelt the failed ring attempts?

    • @johns1625
      @johns1625 3 дня назад +8

      Also keep in mind that dagger alone probably weighed at least a few pounds, they didn't even bother to remove the steel blade, and the chunk of mithril maybe 10 grams. So they melted several pounds of mixed gold silver and steel with 10 grams of mithril and made three 5 gram rings. They totally wasted like 99 percent of the total material. They could have just cut like 1 inch of gold off the end of her dagger and had pure gold and mithril rings rather than rings that are likely half polluted with steel from the blade. She could have kept her dagger and still made the rings. 😂😂

Which means, that the ring work not conceal someone from the elves, it would not show said elves something they couldn't already see without the ring, even if just partially and it also means, that if Sauron's true nature was visible in the spirit world, the elves would know it, ring or not!

    I'm sure others have already pointed this out, but the order of ring creation is actually sort of backwards in the show! Celebrimbor and Sauron (and the other elves of eregion) first made a great variety of "lesser rings" together as something like practice, building up to and eventually forging the great rings of power that we know as the 7 (for the dwarves) and the 9 (for men). The Three elven rings were actually made LATER without Sauron's direct involvement, and he was unaware of their creation at first, which is why they are not tainted by his influence in the same way, but still fall under the control of the One because they are built on essentially the same blueprints
    If I remember the correct the 9 and 7 were not originally designed for men and dwarves respectively, per se, but when Sauron conquered Eregion he took those rings and gave them out to the other races in an attempt to dominate their leaders, and by extension their nations.
    Honestly I would love to talk more about this stuff, if you ever have any questions or want some of the lore sorted out let me know!

    There is so much stuff in this show that breaks the lore, it's completely unreasonable to be able to explain all of the issues with it, even episode by episode, but if I were to address just one, there is a huge problem with the elf going invisible and seeing Sauron's true form in the spirit world. Tolkien's elves exist perpetually in both the spirit realm and the physical, which means everyone at the forge should be able to see Sauron's true form regardless of wearing a ring or not. The experience Frodo has, for example, at Weathertop in LotR, is because he isn't an elf or Maiar, he's a hobbit.

    None of the 16 Rings of Power had corruptive effects on their wearers prior to the forging of the One Ring, because if they had then Sauron's plan never would have worked. The idea for the rings was that they would provide great power to their bearers with seemingly no downsides, because Sauron wanted the bearers to feel zero compunctions about having them on at all times so that they would all be completely open and ready for when he forged The One and thus took complete control over all the others. If any of the rings of power had the effect that Durin's ring had within the space of a day, the whole plan would fall apart because even if the bearer themselves were enthralled by the ring everyone else around them would, as Random Film Talk would say, notice that they are fucking bonkers and would likely try to do something to get the damn thing away from them.
    The intense greed inflicted by the Dwarven rings only took effect _after_ the One Ring was forged and Sauron attempted to assert control over the Dwarven Lords. This attempt failed due to the dwarves natural stubbornness and some degree of magical resistance due to their race's rather unique creation, but Sauron's attempt at controlling them basically drove the Dwarven lords crazy and massively intensified their greed. Honestly, King Durin going this insane would have worked perfectly fine if this had happened _after_ Sauron forged the One Ring and attempted to take control, because it would be the direct result of Sauron's will basically shattering the king's mind and driving him mad. But for it to happen before the One Ring makes zero sense because it would be far _far_ too risky for Sauron to forge any of the Rings of Power to have any overt corruptive influence because doing so would simply fast forward any suspicions that everyone else had when they all start thinking to themselves "Heyyy the rings this guy Anatar is forging and giving out are driving everyone that has them fucking bonkers! Maybe we should look into that?"

    And they need a MAGICAL RING to "find the light"??!?

    Man, thank you so much for continuing to make this series. I look forward to every upload. It just infuriates me how they turned the potential for this show into such a cringe inducing joke. It's like everyone who worked on this show is either an extremely talented CG artist or a hoard of theater kids. Your videos help make something entertaining out of it nonetheless!

    If the ring that Duran is using is already corrupting him why would it be handed down generation to generation. Who of the younger generation would want it since they're able to see the corruption happening right in front of them?

      @jrconway3 3 дня назад

      Keep in mind the fall of Kazadum wasn't supposed to happen for thousands of years. They don't have to keep the ring being passed down from generation to generation here because they already broke the timeline.

    Just a small correction I suppose. Numenor is not sunk by the Valar but Illuvatar himself. And with sinking of Numenor he alters the shape of the world from flat to round and brings Valinor out of the mortal realms entirely, now being reachable only by elven ships departing from gray havens. It is I believe the only ever direct intervention Illuvatar ever does, because the men of Numenor broke natural order of things so he removes the temptation entirely.

    Weekend at Hellbrands going very poorly now that the show has revealed that Sauron is unable to hide his true form in the unseen realm.
    The very same unseen realm that we have already been told Legolas can clearly see at all times.
    Because he's an elf. And seeing the unseen realm is something that elves are able to do. Such as the elves of, oh I don't know, the elves of the elven city of...
    Uh oh.
    Deesa nuts ain't the only one dropping her balls today.

    To be honest celebrimbor is the most realistic character in the series: a senile, gullible and slightly racist against those who do not know person but still proficient in one or two things he spent his all life working on.

    I will say the idea of the elven rings being un-corrupted and the rest being corrupted is a genius idea... That the writers of RoP could only *wish* to come up with.

    RoP is such a weird show. Galadrial is Gil-Galad's great aunt and looks young enough to be his daughter. He's the Grandson of one of those two other brothers of Galadrial that Amazon forgot about.

    1:17:05 uh did you know the dagger was supposed to have been thrown past Aragorn and into a tree. However, the actor playing the orc had vision troubles with his mask, and accidentally threw the knife directly at Viggo Mortensen, who was forced to deflect it in desperation.

    Giving mithril these purifying/ deus ex machina abilities also desaturates everything Frodo endured while wearing his uncle's gifted mithril tunic. His journey couldn't have been Westward worthy if any hobbit could have put on the evil filtering maille!
