  • Wild camping in Glen Feshie in the Cairngorms National Park together with Robert from ‪@murchiesmountains2820‬ . We decided to go on a low level wild camp due to the weather forecast of strong winds and rain....

    Ey up Stripey. Great to see you back out in Scotland and with Murchie again. Glen Feshie is so beautiful. It must have looked amazing when all the heather was fully in bloom. Those midgies looked horrendous, thank the lord we don’t get them anywhere near as bad down here.

    That's bringing back midgie PTSD. Once I walked across Rannoch moor and I was walking from Corrour to Kinlochleven via Blackwater Reservoir and the midgies were that bad and I didn't even have a tent to shelter in. In my ears, mouth, eyes, nose it was absolute hell! Hey, it builds character! 🤣

    The scenery was incredible as you said , the river had almost a " Yukon " look on many of its part . I know somedy who will alway's leave a head net in its bag from now on 😅 , to be able to see the midges on camera it had to be a swarm 😮 . Thanks for the video . I live near Feshiebridge/Loch Insh, normally midges are not too bad here but in April/May watch out for the "Birch Flies" (A variant of canadian black fly) around here and Loch Insh- it is the worst place for them in Scotland officially, midges are a nuisance but these things will draw blood and get under cuffs, trousers, under t-shirts not tucked in, thankfully they don't hang about all summer though, just a couple of frenzied weeks but you never know when it kicks off until you're running indoors lol.... When I go biking and hiking after May around here I ALWAYS take a midge net (and thin full finger gloves), they weigh just a few grammes but it's a mistake not to have one as the weather/wind forecasts are so unreliable... I'm planning a few camps around the area to test out some tarp/hammock ideas and test my kit as it progresses into winter, but the midges are still present despite a sub zero frost a few days ago....!! I can wait....!

      @StripeyHatGuy  4 месяца назад +1

      @@BarrioBarranco1 thanks a lot! Haven’t heard of the other beasties before and I don’t not want to meet them 😂. Yeah usually I bring a head net and some sun gloves as in my experience they tend to ignore the top bits of the fingers but hey ho what can I say I forgot them.
      Must be a great area for a hammock, never used one myself so far 😎

    ''Tis never too clever,
    to camp near the river, follow the deer to a high spot that's clear... the midges delight when the day turns to night, but find a good breeze and there rest at your ease...

      Yeah was rather fresh. Not sure what the real temperature was but the forecast said 12 degree Celsius during the day and 6 during the night…I don’t think that it was this cold, otherwise the midges wouldn’t be out in this numbers imho

    To the Sometime Highland Would-be Adventurer
    To the camp wannabe, some advice here for free:
    'Tis never too clever, to camp by the river,
    Pray follow the deer, Up - where midges stay clear;
    The midgies adore The calm valley floor,
    Where the wind drops at night So the midgies delight
    In sensing your breath and then bite near to death
    The unwary camper - Aye, they'll soon see you scamper
    And, with arms and hands flailing (- you'd be better off bailing!)
    For shelter hell-bent, you'll retreat to your tent
    But all is in vain, if you choose to remain;
    Best take to the hill, even though there's a chill,
    ⁃ The cooler fresh breeze will see the midge ease
    And rest there: midge-free, your campsite should be
    Till morning you'll rest, for they cannot molest
    Where the dry wind doth blow - they scarcely will show
    But damp and still air is their much preferred lair,
    And feast with great relish, making camp-life there hellish
    The deer know this best, and go elsewhere to rest,
    So- to loftier heights is the wise choice for nights
    Pray, before making camp, steer clear of the damp:
    Choose 'upward and breezy' to make your life easy;
    And NEVER FORGET to pack your midge net!
