I HAVE A 2019 JEEP COMPASS TRAILHAWK 4X4. AND IT DOESN'T HAVE A GAS CAP.. IT CAME THAT WAY WHEN I BOUGHT IT FROM ENTERPRISE..IT SURPRISED ME WHEN I SEEN IT, SO ASKED AROUND AND OTHER PEOPLE SAID THEIRS ARE THAT WAY ALSO SO I AM GUESSING THAT JUST HOW THESE ARE MADE.. STRANGE AFTER YEARS OF BEING TOLD THEY HAVE TO HAVE ONE AND MAKE SURE THEY ARE GOOD AND SEALED..
Law of gas tanks: if the repair requires dropping the tank, the tank will be full. If the repair requires a longer test drive, the tank will be nearly empty😀
I just changed the lower intake gasket of my wife’s 3.5 gm 6. I used your info on where to get service data and kept hearing your voice: If I can do it, you can do it!” I did it, it took 3 days, it would take a long time for me to learn enough to earn a living doing it. Love your channel. Stay inspired to keep making videos!
I want to thank you for a vid you did awhile back that had a bad wire in the circut. You made a comment in it that saved my butt over the weekend....you said, "Just because it has voltage doesn't mean it can handle load." . It did take a bit but I finally found the pimple in the wire and fixed it. Thanks again for all your videos!!!
You said you might be the only guy making a video of replacing the fuel cap. Can’t think of a better guy to watch replacing a fuel cap. Very much enjoy you diagnostics and thought process in doing so. Hope for great new year for you and your family
Living near Chicago I place some Vaseline on the gas cap gasget. It helps seal the cap if the gasget is a little dry and also helps put a film on the filler neck to keep it from rusting.
Both my former Jeeps, bought brand new, had the factory gas caps go south in just a couple of years. I replaced them with Gates caps and it seemed to fix the issue long term. Keep up the great work Mr O!!
My 2017 Jeep wrangler has a evap code once every 6month to a year. The o ring dries out quick here in Phoenix. Put a bit of Vaseline around the seal and good for another year😂
i've seen burrs on filler necks from factory. i use scotch bright to clean dirt mostly in the south which clings to filler necks from static electric as well as the seal on the cap. spray with 3m wet gel or oil so the cap slips when hitting the neck like an oil filter to the block, gets just a little bit tighter, saved folks thousands with these two fixes... thanks for sharing cheers.
That's funny because I bought my 2005 Eclipse and got it for $1000 off because it had a small evap leak no one could pin down. I probed around a bit and said "despite what they said, it's gotta be the gas cap." I put another one on and, as you like to say, "Bob's your mother's brother!"
Eric O! So I did do my intake valves Friday, like I commented on last week! Many things I didn’t count on! Like I couldn’t find a position for my big meat head to fit under firewall, to see into the back to cylinders! Got out my hand mirror, and finally could look in to see, how clean, if any walnut shell was left behind! Wowza laying across the motor at 70 years old was tuff! Finished putting it back together, and could remember one elec connection that I just couldn’t remember where it lived! Took it for a short drive, after about two miles, bells and whistles went into emergency activation! Rough idle, 5 mph max, and couldn’t pull a slight incline! Called a friend to tow me home! Pulled out my code reader! Turbo waste gate! Service immediately! Throttle position malfunction! Forgot to tighten the clamp on air intake tube to turbo, and found the elec connection I missed! It was something on the intake manifold, with vacuum hoses, and 2 elec connections! The elec connection on throttle body, just needed disconnected and reconnected! Rough idle went away, codes all reset, and it’s running strong, snappy! Took about 6 hours for that! Then cleaned the Maf, map sensors, and cleaned battery posts, which they still were pretty clean, oil change , air filters checked! I’m not scared to tackle most anything! Ok my mentor, just wanted you to know that pretty much if you can do it, I can do it!
Hi Eric. I just want to say thank you for your videos I am not a mechanic but I try to do things on my own, by watching your channel I was able to fix my 2007 chyrsler town and country.
Hello Eric, nice video. The o ring on the gas cap on my 2000 Dodge Ram split and did the same thing...parts store right next door. It's only got 96k on it. Keep the videos coming.
My wife went through two gas caps, one for each of her vehicles she drove. Turned out she was cranking them until they clicked three or four times. Nice
Thanks for being a good mechanic, it’s tough to find one as good as you, luckily I have one in my area, like you. I enjoy your videos. I hope you keep going for a while, to entertain us. Thanks, Eric!
Appreciate your vast knowledge on the many makes and models that you work on. I’ve been noticing that you don’t follow a manufacturer diagnostic tree for step by step diagnosis. You just use a very good approach, facts and common sense. Also your aftermarket scanners have more capabilities than some OEM ones. I’m an Acura tech and the software and development of some of their programs are head scratchers. Nice work! Thanks for all of your informative videos
Eric, no matter if it's a jeep thing, gm thing, Chrysler thing, it doesn't matter, you've got it! Unless it's a Ford thing we all know those just piss ya off. 😂
Smoke signals, up there with CAN BUS . Jeep is now owned by a company in the Netherlands now, as all Chrysler brands, previously was Fiat ( FCA ). Great diagnosis and repair, thanks for sharing Dr O.
I found it useful. A diagnostic process regardless of the outcome is valuable. Learning how to use my new smoke machine in different scenarios is fantastic. Cheers.
Funny thing is I literally did this exact diag and repair on this last Friday on a patriot. Funny watching and listening to your thought process when I did the exact same haha
Eric O’… It was a good lesson on the EVAP system! On my 2006 Jeep Hemi, I kept getting the Small leak code. I had replaced the leak Detection Pump and smoke checked. No change. I got Mike to connect his tool to open the purge valve and asked, should it have a whistle in the back? Replaced the “new” Leak Detection Pump and Solved!! Now if we only had a nice JEEP hat!!!
Just shows to go how much your fuel cap needs to be in good condition Cheers Eric (And probably a good idea to purchase a leak detector for serious DIYers)
If you get an 'opportunity' to replace the throttle position motor assembly on the 2.4l family of engines, note the short length of the 4 screws that fasten it to the intake manifold. You will most likely find they need to be 20mm longer as only 3 to 4 threads are engaged to the plastic of the manifold. I ordered the correct screws from McMaster-Carr. Order a tap too as the holes should be taped to prevent cracking the plastic.
On my Jeep Patriot I had the same gas cap issue. I bought a new cap but I figured out if I take the old cap and put downward pressure while turning it, I would get a better seal.
I remember last year when Eric had a Colorado come in with a small Evap leak and it turned out to be a rusted fuel pump. My Colorado had same error and am not too good at diagnosing so I just took the bed off and found a severely rusted fuel pump. Fixed it.
I just changed the ESIM in my 2010 Town & Country. Had just replaced the gascap about a year earlier with OEM. I did not mind firing the parts cannon for the ESIM at advance auto. It was the carquest branded with lifetime warranty. 15% off online orders plus bought it with paypal so 4 payments of $8. now I can pass Illinois emissions (we dont have safety lanes on non-commercial vehicles although we probably should being in the rust belt). I am happy.
I have patriots(2) and had a compass. I found the gas filler pipe would rust at top where o ring seals. Sand rust off and silicone grease o ring and it stays off for several months.
This is oddly appropriate for me. I've had a "GASCAP" dash alert since I got the evap canister ripped off in a high speed water splash. I've ignored it b/c I don't really care, anymore. It's 15 years old, so the list of minor "quirks" is getting longer & longer. :)
I had this problem a few years ago on my compass. Had the neck of the tank and the cap replaced. It just came back a couple months ago. Small evap leak. I think I’m gonna start leasing.
ironic I'm watching this today after looking at mom's PT Cruiser, which threw a P0441 recently. used my autel to toggle the vent between its duty cycle settings, so i'm pretty sure the valve is good. will see if it comes back on her.
My Kia just popped a code for bad gas cap. About 3 weeks ago my car was running without the cap fastened at idle, my doing. Pulled a code from AutoZone. I don’t necessarily trust their scan tool. Bought and replaced the cap still have the CEL light. Dealership said it should go out, if not I’m on the hunt to find local mechanic like Eric.😎
It had gas in it!! Well I`ll be dipped! Evap leak? Follow the smoke! Kinda dangerous to use a power tool on a fill tube there fella. Glad there was no boom. Nice diag and fix Eric.
If I have a evap code and the fuel cap seal is bad I have put a baggie over the fuel neck and the old cap and run a evap self test and see if it passes. Sometimes customers replace the cap and it holds pressure but not vacuum. That’s always fun.
I've been through the same thing with my 08 Sebring. First I changed the gas cap twice. Then that rear valve and last the purge valve. Smoker didn't reveal leak, but still sets that small leak code. Concluded must be the oring around the fuel pump? IDK? Good ole piece of electric tape over the CEL!
The only check eng. light I ever had on my 250K miles Grand Caravan mini van was "small evap leak". I cleaned the gas cap, the seal and the housing around it. Started the engine and the code was gone off my dashboard. It returned about a year later in late fall, so I cleaned the cap again and the warning light was gone again! Been code free for at least 2-3 years since the first code. Newer Jeep/ Mercedes do not have fuel caps you just stick the fuel hose in the tank neck. I suspect this was a common issue with older Jeeps or Dodge and Mercedes vehicles.
Wow it really was the gas cap that's cool very interesting that in line wouldn't shut itself off that you had to pinch it I don't understand that I thought the system could be sealed either way love the video thank you
On my 05 Liberty when I had the evap code I change the filter and checked sensor put what fixed it was web advice to put some petroleum jelly on the gas cap "O" ring and did that whenever I changed the oil. Never had evap code again. Put some on the metal neck if it is metal. God those 4 bangers are noisey . I had a Neon back in 95 was never that noisey.
You might see it in a couple years, I have a 2014 compass and had a small evap leak and it was the plastic flange on the fuel pump and transfer pump it was cracked and brittle and leak past the o ring around the fuel pump where it seals to the tank
Have come across that a few times. I think the rust building up under the locking ring is pushing on then cracking the module. That was my guess initially although the purge valve would have been a better guess. This is exactly why we test and not guess because I was wrong on both attempts:)
@unencumbered351 yeah I have no idea why they do that, just figured I'd let people know what I found on my jeep that was causing the small evap leak, alot of people would look past that
@@unencumbered Yup, I actually had no evaporator codes on a Ford Edge, BUT when you filled up the fuel tank, fuel would leak out. The pump housing was cracked, due to rust.
Absolutely, me included. First time for me was years ago on either an X3 or X5 with a small evap leak. Spent way too much time. I could smell the leak but couldn't find the smoke :( Thanks for your reply.
The wifes Jeep just flashed on the dash check gas cap and of course the check engine light came on. I seen something that said put Vaseline on the o ring and it will help seal it so I tried it, so far the light has stayed off. It's probably a temporary fix but it tells me the cap is the problem.
Or the flange on the filler neck that the cap seals against I've had the GASCAP warning on my Dodge a few times, sanding/cleaning the flange to remove the rust generally fixes it
My old 07 Dodge Caravan usually trips the gas cap light every 2 years. I take the cap off, lube up the O-ring with petroleum jelly and away she goes for another two years. I do find that every 4 years the o-ring starts to crack. I aways carry a new cap with me because the stupid light bothers me when it cilcks on and 'dings'. lol
Apparently that esim switch shows closed in both vacuum and pos pressure scenarios. It should only be open when it's expected to have atmospheric pressure.
I thought it sounded like a four banger during the test drive... I had no idea jeep put fours in those things. Fwd to boot. What a heap. Is it the Toyota Corolla of Jeeps?
Just buy a '69 Camaro with a small block, a carburetor, and a TH350. Install a new heater core and aftermarket air and be done with it. The absurd expense of modern cars with multiple computers and geegaws along with $150/hr repair cost is just stupid. Oh, and the light has ALWAYS been the gas cap on mine. $10 on eBay.
I remember the old days our smoke machine was another tech who smoked way before all this new stuff LOL! puff and blow it in LOL! I miss those days.....
did the mechanics union require the creation of evap systems in cars in order to create a steady stream of revenue? It does not seem to matter what brand of car they are always the first system to turn on the money light.
Evap problems seem to be difficult for many techs to diagnose . A family member has a Kia Forte that had check engine light for evap fault. The Kia dealer couldn’t figure out the problem at all .

Best gascap replacement video Ive done ever seen.

His videos and Rays are the reason I replaced my cap with an original cap after I found the cap seal was a little tired looking.
My 2017 Jeep wrangler has a evap code once every 6month to a year. The o ring dries out quick here in Phoenix. Put a bit of Vaseline around the seal and good for another year😂

The absurd expense of modern cars with multiple computers and geegaws along with $150/hr repair cost is just stupid. Oh, and the light has ALWAYS been the gas cap on mine. $10 on eBay.
Thank you , teacher , here Ruben's , city Venezuela ,
I remember the old days our smoke machine was another tech who smoked way before all this new stuff LOL! puff and blow it in LOL! I miss those days.....
Is Mrs. O going to get her own channel like Mrs Rainman!??? I think she'd be great!!
As alway's Another Quality Diagnosis and repair
Eric O also enjoy seeing you use tools other than snap-on and Milwaukee impacts. Lots and lots of good tool. Rust requires air tools
Gotta love thee Avoca smoke-a. : )
Least you didn't have to do a uniform change like Ray did changing a trans seal......
Good Videos Eric O thanks for squeezing them I
did the mechanics union require the creation of evap systems in cars in order to create a steady stream of revenue? It does not seem to matter what brand of car they are always the first system to turn on the money light.
Evap problems seem to be difficult for many techs to diagnose . A family member has a Kia Forte that had check engine light for evap fault. The Kia dealer couldn’t figure out the problem at all .
Thank you From Wayland My compass has the cap issue
